1. Note
#lease read these instructions carefully. $t the end of the
instructions you will find a button. %f you click this button, the
instructions will be removed and the document can be used for
your text. &'ote that the button may not work properly if you
change in any way this text.( $lso, a new document containing
the instruction text will be created, which you can save in your
hard disk for reference. )se the styles, fonts and point si*es as
defined in this template, but do not change or redefine them in
any way as this will lead to unpredictable results.
2. Introduction
+e at ,lsevier believe a template should help you, not hinder
you, in authoring your paper. %t should follow you in how you
want to write your paper, not force you to fill in bits and pieces of
text. %t should allow you to type any text, copy from previous
versions, or load an already existing plain text to be formatted.
-ou will therefore find no fill!in screens. you will not need to
remember shortcut keys, to use lists of styles, bother about
alignment, indents, fonts and point si*es. /ust a mouse!click at
one of the menu options will give you the style that you want.
The ob0ective of this template is to enable you in an easy way
to style your article attractively in a style similar to that of
Tetrahedron Letters. %t should be emphasi*ed, however, that the
final appearance of your paper in print and in electronic media
will very likely vary to greater or lesser extent from the
presentation achieved in this +ord
1
document.
3. Organisation of the template
$ template &with its file name ending on .dot, rather than on
.doc( in +ord
1
is a 2mold3 that formats documents based on it. %f
you click 4'ew5 on the 4File5 menu, what you see and open are in
fact templates. To use the Tetrahedron Letters template you
should first save it with the other templates. To do this, click on
4'ew5 on the 4File5 menu, choose the 4eneral5 tab and paste the
template there. To create a new document, select the template,
choose the Create 'ew 6ocument option, and double!click on
the template icon. "ave the document.
The template formats your text by using a +ord
1
feature
called 4"tyles5. "tyles define the format &or appearance( of a
paragraph of text as regards letter si*e, indentation, line spacing,
etc. %f you5re not familiar with using styles, do not worry. the
template arranges everything for you in a user!friendly way.
3.1. The toolbar and its menus
$t the top of the working area, you see a number of buttons
that activate drop!down menus. -ou can select the re7uired styles
from these menus. $ 4"tyles5 menu is available in the customi*ed
4,ls8Tools5 bar for applying "tyles to paragraphs, i.e. the text
between two subse7uent hard returns &9(. +hen you hit the ,nter
key, you finish a paragraph. The template chooses at that moment
the most appropriate next style, e.g. after the style for authors5
names, you will automatically be in the affiliation style. $fter a
section heading, the template will automatically switch to normal
paragraph style, but naturally you can ad0ust all that using the
menu options. %n the 4"tyles5 menu, the Title #age styles are
listed under 4:ead5, and the main text styles are under 4;ody5.

The 4Tools5 menu in the ,ls8Tools bar does more than 0ust
apply a style. %t has palettes to insert author footnote symbols,
greek symbols, and some common math and chemistry symbols.
)sing the 4%nsert ,7uation5 option, you can create e7uations in
the +ord
1
e7uation editor, or if the IathTypeJ e7uation editor
is installed on your computer, in the IathTypeJ e7uation editor.
The 4%nsert Table5 option can be used to insert tables, and the
4%nsert Figure5 option can be used to browse to a chosen directory
in your hard disk and insert figures in the desired position.
3.2. ntering text
There are several ways in which you can enter and format
your text in this template. The first way is to simply type your
text in a blank document based on this template. %f you want to
apply a different style, start typing the text first as a new
paragraph and, while the cursor is somewhere within the
paragraph, choose the appropriate style from the drop!down
custom menus. %f you remove text to replace it with your own
text, you should pay attention to the 4section breaks5 in it. "witch
to 4'ormal view5 on the 4Kiew5 menu to see the breaks. +ord
1
uses those to separate the one!column and two!column parts, as
well as to serve as page breaks. &-ou may find working in
4'ormal5 view more convenient anyway. "witching to 4#age5
view will restore the two!column lay!out once you have
finished.( From the +ord
1
4File5 L 4#age "etup5 menu, you can
ad0ust the typing area to the paper si*e &$G or Letter si*e paper(
that you use. )sing those options will remove the one! and two!
column settings, so you will need to reinsert those, using the
options in Iicrosoft +ord
1
to ad0ust column settings. %n case the
lay!out becomes disrupted, insert the appropriate break &page
break or column break( from the +ord
1
menu to restore it.
"witch to a 2!column lay!out after the $bstract. $t the end of
your text, balance the columns using the 4Continuous5 option
from the 4%nsert5 L 4;reak5 menu. %nsert a switch to one column
before any page!wide tables.
Kery often you will already have prepared &parts of( your text.
%f you load that text as a separate document, you can easily insert
it into a document based on this template by cutting and pasting
between the two documents. -ou can apply the appropriate styles
from the 4,ls8Tools5 "tyles menu to obtain the Tetrahedron
Letters lay!out.
-ou may also attach the template to an already existing
document. Choose from the 4Tools5 menu the option 4Templates
and $dd!%nsM5. "elect the 4TetrahedronLetters5 template and
make sure to tick the box 4$utomatically update document styles5
to make the styles available. -ou may in this case have to ad0ust
the margins of the document using the #age "etup options on the
4File5 menu.
$lternatively, you may insert the whole text or parts you
previously prepared by using on the 4%nsert5 menu of +ord
1
the
option 4FileM5. %n that case take care to retain or re!insert the
above mentioned section breaks. $fter the file is inserted you can
style it by placing the cursor in each paragraph and clicking the
re7uired style on the drop!down menus.
'ote that )D and )" spellings are accepted but should be
used consistently.
4. The first page
'aturally, your paper should start with a concise and
informative title. 6o not use abbreviations in it. 'ext, list all
authors with their first names or initials and surnames &in that
order(. %ndicate the author for correspondence using the 4Tools5
menu. #resent addresses can be inserted as +ord
1
footnotes using
the 4%nsert5 L 4Footnote5 menu. $fter having listed all authors5
names, you should list their respective affiliations. Link authors
and affiliations using superscript lower case letters from the
4$uthor Footnote "ymbols5 menu in the toolbar.
!.1. The Abstract
$n $bstract is re7uired for every paper. it should succinctly
summari*e the reason for the work, the main findings, and the
conclusions of the study. The abstract should be no longer than
E?? words. 6o not include artwork, tables, elaborate e7uations or
references to other parts of the paper or to the reference listing at
the end.
The reason is that the $bstract should be understandable in
itself to be suitable for storage in textual information retrieval
systems.
"upply some FNO keywords, separated with semicolons, e.g.,
$*omethine ylide. Claisen rearrangement. 6iels!$lder

5. The main tet
-ou will usually want to divide your article into &numbered(
sections &note that subsections are not usual for this publication(.
Code section headings using the options in the 4"tyles5 menu.
:eadings should reflect the relative importance of the sections.
'ote that text runs on after a Gth order heading. )se the heading
style for the whole paragraph, but remove the italic coding except
for the actual heading.
,nsure that all tables, figures and schemes are cited in the text
in numerical order. Trade names should have an initial capital
letter, and trademark protection should be acknowledged in the
standard fashion, using the superscripted characters for
trademarks and registered trademarks respectively. $ll
measurements and data should be given in "% units where
possible, or other internationally accepted units. $bbreviations
should be used consistently throughout the text, and all
nonstandard abbreviations should be defined on first usage.
$uthors are re7uested to draw attention to ha*ardous materials or
procedures by adding the word C$)T%B' followed by a brief
descriptive phrase and literature references if appropriate. The
experimental information should be as concise as possible, while
containing all the information necessary to guarantee
reproducibility.

Iake sure you embed, rather than lin$ the ob0ect. 6epending on
the amount of detail, you can choose to display artwork in one
column &2? pica wide( or across the page &G2 pica wide(. "cale
your artwork in your graphics program before incorporating it in
your text. %f the artwork turns out to be too large or too small,
resi*e it again in your graphics program and re!import it or use
the si*ing handles at the corner of the artwork. The text should
not run along the sides of any figure. %f it does, right!click the
figure, choose 4Format Bb0ect &TFigure(5, choose the 4+rapping5
tab and select 4Top U bottom5. $rtwork is normally linked to, and
moves with, a paragraph it is linked to. $ small anchor symbol
should indicate the paragraph to which it is linked. %f you do not
see the anchor, choose from the 4Tools5 menu, 4BptionsM5, and
click the 4Kiew5 tab. Tick the 4Bb0ect anchors5 tick box. -ou can
move the figure itself by dragging but you can also drag the
anchor.
-ou might find positioning your artwork within the text
difficult anyway. %n that case you may choose to place all artwork
at the end of the text and insert a marker in the text at the desired
place. %n any case, please keep in mind that the placement of
artwork may vary somewhat in relation to the page lay!out.
-ou can insert a caption below the figure or scheme. To keep
the drawing and caption more easily together, select them both
&hold down the V":%FTW key and click both figure and caption(
and choose, under the right mouse button, rouping. raphs may
appear either on a fixed spot in the text, e.g. a chemical structure,
or 4floating5, normally a figure or scheme with a caption, which
remains in the same place on the page regardless of the text
flowing around it. To choose between the two options, right!click
the graph, choose 4Format ob0ect5, choose the 4#osition5 tab and
tick or clear the 4Float over text5 tick!box. %f grouped with a
caption, a figure will always be floating.
