Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase - 1
Section 1: Introduction
Chennai Metropolis has been growing rapidly and the trafc
volumes on the roads have also been increasing enormously.
The Chennai Metro Rail project aims at providing the people
of Chennai with a fast, reliable, convenient, efcient, modern
and economical mode of public transport, which is properly
integrated with other forms of public and private transport
including buses, sub-urban trains and MRTS.
The metro being a new mass rapid transit system in Chennai,
needs an efective wayfnding system, where the communica-
tion elements facilitate the users in getting from point A to
point B. Wayfnding systems in any transportation network
should reassure users, create a welcoming environment and
ideally provide answers to potential queries before the pas-
sengers have to ask for assistance.
The design guidelines outlined in this document represent a
comprehensive framework to create and apply a wayfnding
and signage system for the metro stations, rolling stock and
depots.
These standards are intended to assist designers, developers,
contractors, system operators and station managers in devel-
oping and implementing a consistent signage systems across
all stations, rolling stock and depots.
By careful and consistent application of this standard, the de-
signer shall create a successful and appealing wayfnding sys-
tem that should provide the required information to the users:
Confrm they are at the correct start and fnish point of an
individual journey
Identify their location within the station building
Reinforce they are travelling in the right direction
Orient themselves within the station
Identify any potential hazards
Identify their destination on arrival
Escape safely in an emergency
This document is a supplement to the Section 4.14 SIGNAGE

given in Volume 4 - Section 4 of Tender Document
Chennai Metro Rail Limited owns the rights for this document
prepared by Tata Elxsi limited in collaboration with EGIS India
consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd on behalf of EMBYE - The general
consultants for Chennai Metro.
The Chennai Metro Signing Guidelines is divided into fve sec-
tions, providing standards on graphics and signage to facili-
tate the consistent implementation across the Chennai Metro
network.

which show varied cases of wrong compositions of signs, that
shall be strictly avoided.
All dimensions given in this document are in millimeters.
All content shown in the illustrations is dummy text. The fnal
content, names of stations and the translations shall be taken
from the annexure provided by the employer's representa-
tive.
As with any design manual, this document can be updated
with supplements. New labels, pictograms, notices, line dia-
grams, etc. will inevitably be developed as the Chennai Metro
service comes into operation. Employer's representative is re-
sponsible for the distribution of the manual and the issue of
new update packs either to replace pages or add new techni-
cal information. Care should be taken to ensure you are work-
ing with the most recent guidelines by contacting employer's
representative for the latest issue reference.
It should be noted that sign types shown in this manual are
illustrations only and do not necessarily represent the full
range of actual signs used in station and depot environments.
The Illustrations are not drawn to an accurate scale and should
not be recreated by scanning or tracing, or used in place of
ofcially authorised artwork. These illustrations are given in a
CD in Adobe Illustrator as well as editable pdf format.
For any specifc areas needing special treatment, this guide-
line will serve as direction for designing a new sign which shall
be approved by the employer and employer's representative
for their design, alignment to guidelines, details, before ex-
ecution.
For further information please contact the Employers Repre-
sentative who will execute the design review before manufac-
turing and installation of the signages.

The CMRL identity
This symbol, chosen to promote Chennai Metro, is featured on
numerous applications associated with the network, including
system maps, station name signs, entrance totems and train
liveries. This manual covers how the Metro symbol, should be
implemented on passenger information and station signage.
Exclusion Zone
The logo requires space around it in order to maximize its vis-
ual presence. An exclusion zone around the logo prevents any
graphic element from interfering with its integrity.
The illustration opposite show the logo exclusion zone. Please
ensure no other graphic elements or text are placed within
these zones.
The vector format of the CMRL logo is provided in the CD -
attached with this document.

Section 3: Visual Identity
3.1 Basis of design
This section explains the rationale behind the graphic design
approach, taking into account diferent categories of signs
and passenger communications inside stations and on board
trains.
We have applied the following principles:
Visibility and readability
Viewing distances
Information hierarchy
Customer focus
Together these principles have contributed towards the crea-
tion of a unifed environmental graphics and passenger infor-
mation system for Chennai Metro.
Visibility and readability
The graphic standards developed for Chennai Metro need to
be highly visible and instantly recognisable, particularly for
application to signs in busy passenger environments. Since
the purpose of all signs is to convey information, this shall be
done clearly, concisely and consistently, to assist commuters.
Signs tell passengers the layout of a station, where they are
and in which direction they should go, assisting circulation,
improving safety and providing reassurance.
Furthermore, the clarity of information graphics on signs,
combined with wayfnding strategy, can enhance the pas-
senger journey, contributing to a feeling of confdence. This
ultimately leads to a positive perception of CMRL as a pub-
lic transport operator. Adherence to the standards of colours,
typeface and their use in text and sign backgrounds is impor-
tant to retain a desired level of visibility and readability
Viewing distances
This chart, Figure 3.1.1, shows the distance at which certain
sizes of lettering can be read by a person with average eye-
sight. The chart shown here should be used to determine the
minimum letter size for any specifc sign. Other considerations
such as architectural features or visual continuity, may infu-
ence the choice of letter size but the optimum size should be
used wherever possible.
Information hierarchy
Messages on signs should be clear, logical and consistent in
language, and use the minimum amount of text, supported
by pictograms and arrows, as appropriate. This is important to
minimise confusion at stations, including changes in transpor-
tation modes, so that passengers understand the transport
network and the various options available at specifc points
of their journey.
For ease of communication, too many messages on signs
should be avoided. Messages should follow a system hierar-
chy based on direction and the importance of information to
passengers at each stage of their journey. The priority for di-
rectional signs is to direct passengers to trains and other inter-
connecting services and exits, including an indication of what
passengers can expect to fnd at that exit, such as buses, taxis
or any important landmarks.
The location signs shall not be mixed with direction signs. lo-
cated at crucial decision points for passengers, for example,
when deciding which train to board or whether to turn left or
right. Where facilities such as toilets are nearby, location signs
with pictograms should be sufcient to identify the facility.
Customer focus
The requirement of any transport operator is to make the sys-
tem easy to use, particularly for frst-time passengers. This is
achieved by giving the passenger confdence. The design of
the stations must provide this confdence, making it as intui-
tive as possible to fnd the entrance, concourse and routes to
the trains, as well as the way out or the route to connecting
services. Information graphics and signing should enhance
this process, confrming locations and making clear the lay-
out of stations. Lack of clear directions can cause anxiety and
it is important that passengers are reassured, CMRL has their
safety and interest at heart. Signing as part of a comprehen-
sive passenger information package is one of the most vital
aspects of any transport system. The strategic placement of
a unifed family of signs is indispensable for guiding people
safely and efciently to their destinations, especially within
busy station environments and public transport interchanges.
A customer focused approach to the design of information
graphics and signs is important for passenger safety and well-
being, the smooth running of stations, and the projection of a
strong Chennai Metro visual identity.

Text representation
Use of upper and lower case
Only the initial letter of a sentence, facility name or informa-
tion on a sign panel is an upper case letter (capitals). All other
text is to be displayed in lower case. Studies and experience of
design team have hinted that All CAPS text takes more time
to read and appears as visual clutter in a multilingual signing
specifcally in combination with Indian languages and also
leads to making the signs longer.
Use of abbreviation
Use of abbreviation shall be kept to the minimum and only
in places where due to space constraints the text has to be
reduced. The abbreviations shall be avoided as its translation
in Tamil will be difcult in reading and Tamil language is rarely
in abbreviated form.
Translation between Tamil and English
The translation shall be done keeping in mind the general vo-
cabulary of people and relevance to the contextual language.
Wherever possible the emphasis shall be on translation based
on meaning than phonetic. The line colours represented by
the colour names will be translated based on phonetics as the
words would become a part of a spoken language of the city
than that of written language. However the fnal decision and
confrmation for the use of translated text will be given by em-
ployer's representative.
Ampersand
Use of ampersand should be avoided in favour of use of and,
as Tamil language does not use symbols.
Hyphenation
Punctuation like full stops and commas shall not be used in
short text messages. A hyphen shall not be used to indicate
a time or day period. The term to or shall be used
instead.
Example : Monday to Saturday - 9:00 to 18:00
Time should be represented as a clock based on 24 hrs. Colon
shall be used to diferentiate hours and minutes instead of hy-
phen or semicolon.
Dates and Months
Dates shall be displayed in order of day, month, year in both
languages. Dot of Fullstop shall be used as separator for the
date, month and year.
Example : 20.03.2002
Numerals
All numericals represented in English shall be of Kohinoor
Latin font and numericals represented in Tamil shall be of Ko-
hinoor Tamil font.
Money
The fares in the information sign shall be represented as D1.00
in English as well as Tamil . The decimal point shall be repre-
sented with a full point.

Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase - 1
Pictograms have been recreated specially for Chennai metro
system wide application. These designs have been inspired
and referred with the ISO standards and global best practices
in pictogram representations. Pictograms are useful because
they are a form of shorthand for explaining directional or loca-
tion messages, designed to be suitable for a local as well as an
international audience.
Stand-alone pictograms are used to identify passenger facili-
ties such as information points and toilets. There are diferent
categories of pictograms covering: station facilities provided
for passenger comfort; operational services to support the
running of stations and the Chennai Metro system; and dif-
ferent modes of travel, such as rail, taxi, bus and air transport
available at transport interchanges.
Pictograms are always shown inside a rounded edges square
box in white or yellow (in case of exits) against the grey back-
ground, as illustrated. Every pictograms require space around
it in order to maximize its visual presence. An exclusion zone
around the pictogram graphic, shown in light grey, prevents
any graphic element from interfering with it. Please ensure no
graphic elements or text are placed within these zones.
Two or more pictograms can be combined as illustrated.
Pictograms where ever used shall be reproduced every single
time from the original artworks and should never be redrawn.
New pictograms can be created using the grid shown here
and matching the style, representation, visual look of these
proposed pictograms.
The newly designed and proposed pictograms shall be ap-
proved by employer prior to its implementation.

Directional arrows have been designed to be highly visible
and recognisable from a distance. Their correct application
should aid the clear identifcation of directional signs within
a busy station environment ensuring messages on signs are
quickly assimilated and understood. The arrows are designed
for passenger use at relatively close distances and therefore
do not necessitate the same scale as those on trafc or road
signs.
The use of white arrows against the blue background achieves
good contrast to aid visibility and help reduce glare.
Arrows are rotated at 45 increments to indicate each direc-
tion. Arrows centred in a 168mm x 168mm square box on
signs. Directional arrows should be used as illustrated in this
manual and not redrawn or modifed in any way.
Basic rules for the use of arrows:
Arrows indicating directions to the left, straight ahead or
down should be placed on the left hand side of the message.
Arrows indicating directions to the right should be placed on
the right hand side of the message. Arrows indicating oblique
down and straight down must only be used for a change in
level - i.e. stairs, ramp or escalator.
Arrows indicating oblique up and straight up can indicate di-
rection across open areas as well as a change in level.
45 degree / oblique arrows shall be used very carefully only at
following instances
Showing a change in level, i.e. movement above or below
at the staircase.
Showing a prominent location/third direction in the
same sign panel which is distinctly accessed between the
straight ahead and right/left directions.
In open areas where a person can actually walk in an ob-
lique direction between the straight and left/right.
These should not be used in narrow corridors.

All sign sizes and proportions have been based on a 75 X 75
grid to retain a consistent visual look and limit the number of
diferent sizes.
The ratio of the size of text and line spacing or leading shall
follow the measurements as illustrated.
All signs shall follow the same sequence of languages (Tamil
on top, followed by English and then Hindi) and the same pro-
portions as shown here.
In certain circumstances secondary or subsidiary text is re-
quired on signs, for example, to explain an exit direction in
more detail by giving the street name, or a prominent land-
mark at that exit. To maintain the emphasis on the direction
to the station exit, it is recommended secondary text such as
street or building names be shown at smaller sizes than the
standard text size for signing. This applies to both Tamil and
Latin typefaces.
Digital templates for multilingual sign layouts accompany this
manual in separate folders on the disk version.
Please contact employer's representative for guidance on any
sign which might be an exception to the above rule, for exam-
ple, because of limited space.

DESCRIPTION
Directional or wayfnding signs are key information providers
for passengers navigating busy station buildings from the en-
trances via the concourse to the platforms, and vice versa to
the station exits. Most passengers read directional signs while
on the move, albeit at walking pace, and from various viewing
angles.
Sign composition
SIGN TYPE: DT (direction to trains)
The layout of information on directional signs has to follow a
the hierarchy. The sequence for graphics on signs begins with
the directional arrow, supported by a pictogram showing the
service or facility a passenger may be aiming for (such as a
train or tickets) with text in Tamil and English confrming the
message.
Arrows are the most important elements of directional signs
and are always centred in the end module, on the left for di-
rections to the left and on the right for directions to the right.
Pictograms are then positioned after the arrow, onto the pic-
togram panel. The pictogram panel ranged left for directions
to the left and ranged right for directions to the right. The pic-
togram shall be positioned on the pictogram panel as per the
template. A maximum of three pictograms is permitted in a
single sign array but use of 3 pictograms shall be very limited
and preferably be avoided.
The direction signs are laid out in Tamil and English (Latin)
text. Tamil text is always placed above the Latin text, as shown
in the example on this page. The ratio of the size of text and
line spacing or leading shall follow the measurements, already
described in the sign layout section.
Sign composition
SIGN TYPE: DE (direction to exit)
These are essentially the direction signs to exits and use the
same layout principles as that of sign type DT. To clearly dif-
ferentiate exit signs from all other signs, the colour of the pic-
togram panel, pictogram fll colour, arrow and primary text is
in yellow.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
These signs shall be placed where a passenger has to make a
decision of choosing a direction, either towards trains (DT) or
towards exit (DE).
The strategic positioning of directional signs assists passenger
circulation around stations. It is important that directional
signs are clearly visible and recognisable from a distance as
well as reliable and authoritative.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
Directional signs are internally illuminated unless speci-
fed otherwise.
A sign face in rigid translucent substrate with graphics in
cast vinyl as per specifed colours plotter cut and pasted.
A protective over laminate shall cover the sign graphic on
the sign face fxed inside a Stainless steel frame.
A MS sign box receives the Stainless steel sign frame on
2 sides for a double sided sign and 1 side for single sided
sign.
The Pictogram panel shall be powdercoated to match
specifed colours with cutouts for router cut pictogram
panels to project out and give a light hallow and illumina-
tion.
For all pictograms on grey background, only the picto-
gram illustration(in white or yellow) illuminates and the
background shall not illuminate. Whereas in case of line
colour pictograms, the pictogram will be entirely backlit.
The sign face is all opaque allowing only text and symbols
to be illuminated
FIXING
Typically suspended, projected and wall mounted inside the
station environments.

Typical sign layouts
Shown here are the typical layouts in direction signs, with two
line and three line text.
Overall sign lengths shall be in multiples of 300mm, to retain
a consistent visual look and such fnite dimensions assist in
coordination with other on site elements like wall panelling,
cladding, door openings, counters etc.
For instance, a sign overall length can be 2400mm or next size
can be 2700mm, but there cannot be a sign with 2500mm
overall length.
The layout of directional signs is proportionally based on the
permitted sign height of 300mm or 375 mm depending on
the number of text lines as illustrated. Margins at the left and
right hand sides of signs as well as at the top and bottom are
consistent irrespective of sign length.
The pictogram panel also increases in modules along the
length, with every pictogram at a spacing of 37.5mm from the
other. A maximum of three pictograms is permitted in a single
sign array.
*These compositions shall be avoided and very rarely used.
**In case of 3 line exit signs the pictogram panel can accommo-
date 4 smaller secondary pictograms, as illustrated. The second-
ary pictograms may show other modes of transport available
after exiting the metro station, for example, bus, auto, suburban
railways or MRTS.

Combined signs provide a number of messages in one loca-
tion. For Chennai Metro, signs arrays are joined on the same
sign panel with pictogram panels added on top. The sign face
will be a continuous panel separated with a white band. The
pictogram panel is made for each panel and mounted onto
the sign box with a small gap between panels when stacked,
as illustrated. . The lower most pictograms showing the char-
acteristic feature of projecting below the sign with rounded
corners.
The maximum number signs stacked in a single location must
not exceed three. If more than three messages/choices of di-
rection are required in one location then consideration must
be given to using additional signs.
Arrow placement should follow the rules outlined earlier in
this section. Arrows should never point into the sign or at an-
other line.
In case a one pictogram sign is stacked with a 2 pictogram
panel, the panel for one pictograms shall be made as wide as
the 2 pictogram sign message.

Sign alignment arrow orientation
By defnition all directional signs contain arrows and it is im-
portant that consistent rules are applied for arrow orientation
to avoid confusion among passengers. Arrows pointing to the
left, upper left or lower left, are positioned on the left aligned
for the signs, adjacent pictograms and text follow and range
from the left.
Arrows pointing to the right, upper right or lower right are po-
sitioned on the right of the sign, adjacent pictograms and text
follow and range from the right.
When directions are signed straight ahead or straight down,
the arrow can be shown on the left or the right, depending on
sign location and the direction of other arrows if more than
one direction is shown on the same sign. Under no circum-
stances should arrows point into a sign.

4.1 Direction Signs
SIGN TYPE: DD1P, DD2P
DESCRIPTION
The selection of the direction of the train is done basis the end
station on that line on either side on that station. In a growing
system like Chennai the lines extend bifurcate and also have
running of partial services.
During construction phase the lines open phase wise and the
end stations change.
At a terminal station with multiple platforms - trains for a spe-
cifc direction are not always bound to start form a specifc
platform to maximise the fexibility of the system and cater to
the peak hour trafc.
In above cases a sign with dynamic information clubbed with
fxed information become very useful for users to navigate
and make decisions.
This sign will have a dynamic LED/LCD based display at the
bottom of a typical 2 line sign.
The layout of information on this sign has to follow the hierar-
chy and measurements as illustrated.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
This sign is placed where a passenger has to choose a platform
and its direction.

mation to passengers getting of the trains.
The layout of information on platform directional signs has a
diferent sign composition with text in the centre and direc-
tions to lifts and stairs on either side.
The hierarchy of information and spacing all follow the meas-
urements as illustrated.

Suspended Face mounted Projected
Direction signs can be installed at stations using various fxing
methods:
Suspended signs
Directional signs suspended from station ceilings should be
fxed at a height of 2500 mm to the bottom of the sign from
the fnished foor level, as illustrated.
The signs are suspended using hollow stainless steel pipes
or tubes which shall house the power/data cable in a protec-
tive sleeve for illuminated signs/dynamic signs. Bushings are
required to protect the power cable and for safety at every
junction.
The suspenders should ofer height adjustable to take ac-
count of misaligned ceilings or beams to install the sign in a
spirit level horizontal position. Signs in exposed areas subject
to movement, such as swinging in high winds or when a train
passes at speed, should be adequately designed to counter
the imposed loads and defections. Care should be taken to
minimise the swinging of signs below a threshold of visual un-
easiness for a person standing below. Ideally, a safety wire or
chain should also be used to secure the sign in such a case.
All visible suspenders below the false ceilings and also at lo-
cations without false ceiling shall be made in Stainless steel
while the suspensions inside the false ceilings can be made in
Galvanised Mild steel.
Projected signs
Projected signs should be fxed to the wall at a height of 2500
mm to the bottom of the sign from the fnished foor level, as
illustrated. A diagonal bracing wire shall be used for adequate
support and rigidity. Sign brackets should be mounted with a
shadow gap to compensate for uneven wall surfaces
Wall mounted signs
Wall mounted signs shall be fxed at a height of 2500mm to
the base of the sign from the fnished foor level, as illustrated.
Sign casings should be mounted with a shadow gap to com-
pensate for uneven wall surfaces. Signs should always be lev-
elled horizontally to a spirit level alignment.
For signs requiring fxing screw heads, these should be hidden
wherever possible. Stainless steel should be used for any vis-
ible upright posts, suspended ceiling rods, frames and other
visible fxtures or fttings at all times.
Structural design
The Structural design for the suspenders shall be done by ap-
proved structural engineer for all the dead and imposed loads
as per the site conditions supported with the calculations
supported with the basic data and safety factor assumptions.
These should accompany the drawings showing the required
cross-sections and permissible defections for various mem-
bers.

DESCRIPTION
Directional or wayfnding signs are key information providers
for visitors, staf and services working and visiting the Metro
system Depots. The signs at depot continue the visual identity
designed for the Metro system and the illustrated designs in-
dicate expected text layouts and representations for the signs.
SIGN TYPE: DPT-D
The layout of information on directional signs has to follow a
the hierarchy. The sequence for graphics on signs begins with
the directional arrow and the message with text in Tamil and
English confrming the message.
Arrows are the most important elements of directional signs
and are always centred in the end module, on the left for di-
rections to the left and on the right for directions to the right.
The direction signs are laid out in Tamil and English (Latin)
text. Tamil text is always placed above the Latin text, as shown
in the example on this page. The ratio of the size of text and
line spacing or leading shall follow the measurements, already
described in the sign layout section.
The sign are for use in interiors and exterior environments of
the depot and sizes of the text shall be used accordingly as
illustrated.

4.2 Location Signs
DESCRIPTION
Location signs, also referred to as destination signs, identify
metro entrances, buildings, counters, rooms, facilities, places
and spaces.
Signs identify the facility/place and in a manner to represent
and make a user know that he has reached.
Typical locations signs are - The name of the station on a plat-
form, Platform numbers, ticket counters, TVM locations, door-
names and the main exterior signs identifying the station.
Importantly, location signs do not include arrows announce
the place/facility and are a sort of confrmation that is required
as a user follows the direction signs to reach the place.
SIGN TYPE: L
The layout of a location signs has elements very similar to the
direction signs consisting of a sign face and a pictogram panel.
The pictogram panel identifes the place/facility and becomes
a connect to the direction signs which lead to the facility. The
signs face has text supporting the pictogram identifying the
facility.
The pictogram panel has fexibility of aligning centrally or of-
center along the entire length of the sign face. The pictograms
shall be positioned on the pictogram panel as per the tem-
plate. A maximum of three pictograms is permitted in a single
sign array but use of 3 pictograms shall be very limited and
preferably be avoided.
The location signs are laid out in Tamil and English (Latin) text.
Tamil text is always placed above the Latin text, as shown in
the example on this page. The ratio of the size of text and line
spacing or leading shall follow the measurements, already de-
scribed in the sign layout section.
The location signs are further classifed into various types as
a result of their typical placement for specifc location/facility.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE, PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
and FIXING
Unlike the direction signs, the location sign types vary a lot in
their form, design, sign composition, details and illumination
requirements and have been elaborated in next pages indi-
vidually for their placement principle, performance specifca-
tion and fxing.

DESCRIPTION
Identifying the Metro stations is going to be important for the
frst time users of the system as well as visitors unfamiliar with
the public transport network in Chennai. In case of elevated
stations, the station structure and the viaduct undoubtedly
stand out in the city skyline but the exact name is important.
In due course of time it becomes a landmark of sort for people
to orient themselves while moving in the city. These signs are
specifcally for use in elevated stations.
As a very basic option - Singular CMRL logo, is an optional sign
that can be placed at highly visible locations (where the archi-
tecture permits) for identifying a station building. (Fig 4.2.2).
The Station name sign is mandatory and must be used, on
the exterior of station buildings visible from a distance on the
approach, that will aid recognition of the station, helping pe-
destrians and motorists easily identify the stations. The sign
comprises of the stations name in two languages: Tamil and
English supported by the Chennai Metro symbol, as illustrat-
ed.
This sign uses a blue panel with 3D letters mounted on it,
along with a white projected panel (powder coated in RAL
9010) in the centre with the 3D CMRL logo on it.
The sign layout is adjustable in scale so that it will ft the avail-
able space provided the minimum x dimension in the layout
is 220mm. The size of the text is selected and the layout shown
here is scaled accordingly retaining proportions, placement
and relationships between the various elements. Actual size
and location of the sign to be approved before execution.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
This sign is placed on external walls of station building at high
visibility locations for identifying the station. There may be
multiple signs on a single station depending on the approach
to station. The station name may be installed on the buildings
where the station has greater visibility on the longitudinal
side or at the end of the station box immediately over the road
passing below the station.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
Executed as channel letters or profle cut fat letters out of
thick aluminium sheets fnished with Powdercoating / PU
painting for exterior durability, to match the specifed colours
for an exterior application. Sign execution placement and fx-
ing details should be well coordinated with the architectural
treatment at the location.
The sign shall be either externally illuminated, or backlit.
FIXING
Mostly fxed on building facades over the station building.

DESCRIPTION
Totems are designed to be prominently visible structures
placed close to station entrances to identify the entries. Totem
signs are double sided structures that carry the Chennai Metro
symbol to make them easily recognisable from a distance.
There is an interchange information panel, on which informa-
tion about the metro lines and other modes may be given. It
displays the line colours on which the particular station lies.
In case of interchange stations, both line colours will be dis-
played, as shown in the illustration. Train timings are displayed
along side each line colour. This panel can also be used to
show other transport interchanges, using pictograms, which
are thereby indicating this station to be a interchange be-
tween metro and other transport mode.
There is a space for an area map/system map on the totem,
which is useful for the passengers exiting/entering the station
respectively. Keeping all these various elements and propor-
tions of the totem consistent, the overall size of the totem may
be modifed slightly,if required, based on site conditions.
Designed as a projected version and foor mounted version
for use at elevated and underground station entrances re-
spectively.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
A projected totem should be placed of wall next to the station
entry clearly visible form the approach roads. A foor mounted
totem should be placed in very close proximity to the station
entry without interfering with people movement and the sta-
tion entry structure.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
Use of rigid non-corrosive cleanable sign faces with provision
for maintenance and structure designed to withstand the
imposed loads. The sign face and panelling shall be framed
inside a brushed fnish stainless steel frame with UV treated
and laminated print of information signs fxed within lock-
able secure frames behind clear polycarbonate. This structure
shall be illuminated, so that only the Metro logo, line colour
pictograms, text panels and the maps illuminate. The foor
mounted totem shall have well designed internal structure
and a concrete foundation
FIXING
The foor mounted totem(fgure 4.2.6) shall be installed in
case of underground stations due to lack of a prominent struc-
ture. The projected totem (fgure 4.2.7) shall be used in case
of elevated stations, projected at the entry/exit opening at a
minimum height of 3 meters. There may be cases of elevated
stations where the entry is hidden, in this case foor mounted
totems can be installed.

The standard layout provides a header and borders around
the remaining three sides, leaving a clear space in the mid-
dle. The proportions of the header band are always the same
depending on the original size of paper.
The header band is used for titles, and the inclusion of the
Chennai Metro symbol to indicate the authority of the infor-
mation. Blue is used for the header and borders, with white
for the background colour for body copy. At the bottom is a
section for legend, that explains the symbology used in the
poster. The layout grid for text allows for the use of one, two or
three languages on posters.
It is important passenger information is consistently present-
ed in the recommended formats to underline the authority
and reliability of communications from the network operators.
The graphic here also use a 75mm grid and sizes derived using
this grid to the nearest size matching the global standards of
A series paper sizes, as defned by ISO 216- A0, A1, A2 etc.
Any structure or framing for these signs shall be out of the
graphic area.
All information signs when printed or made available to the
public must display an issue date and version in the bottom
right hand corner. For station specifc signs - the station name
should be included. Digital templates for map layout, colours
and details accompany this manual in separate folders on the
disk version.
The posters will always be made in portrait format for a hori-
zontally compact design.
The guidelines outline use of texts sizes, typical colour palette
and rule for the layout creation.
The colour matching is critical for all digitally printed posters
and consistency shall be maintained across all the individual
prints by carefully calibrating the printers for the project re-
quirements.
All the designed graphics shall be approved by the employer
and the employer's representative before printing and pro-
duction for their design, content, messaging, language trans-
lations and fnally for colour matching.

System maps communicate valuable information to passen-
gers and can be an important corporate statement, acting as
a unifying feature introducing the Chennai Metro system and
initial Metro lines.
The Chennai Metro map is orientated North upwards with
lines drawn at 0 degrees, 90 degrees and 45 degrees. No oth-
er angles are permitted. Station names are always set hori-
zontally in two languages, Tamil and English, and arranged
either side of the Metro lines to be clearly legible.
Station locations are placed relative to each other in close
approximation to their geographical position. Where appro-
priate and where geographical positioning allows, spacing
between indicated stations is kept closely related but not ex-
actly as per the real distance between them in the alignment.
The map is a useful aid to passengers planning a journey on
the Metro, showing stations, train directions, and the inter-
connections between Blue line and Green line and other rail-
ways and major transport systems in Chennai.
The other railway systems - MRTS and Suburban railway is
represented for showing points of interchange.
All system maps when printed or made available to the pub-
lic must display an issue date in the bottom right hand corner.
Digital templates for map layout, colours and details accom-
pany this manual in separate folders on the disk version.
The names of all Chennai Metro stations are shown in two
languages, Tamil and English where space allows.
Line colours are used to show individual lines, such as the
Blue Line and Green Line, with stations indicated by tabs in
the appropriate line colour. At interchange stations, rounded
thick border white squares are shown covering both line at
that interchange station, as illustrated.
The system map is designed as a specifc artwork and should
be reproduced from the original artwork.

Line map - Paid concourse
The line map format illustrated here is recommended for use
on the approach to platforms, where the passenger needs to
decide which platform he or she needs to take based on the
direction of train travel.
Line maps are arranged on a strict grid using consistent spac-
ing between stations with station names, in Tamil and English
only, always arranged alternatively left and right of the line of
travel. The current station name is always shown highlighted
with a band and an arrow indicating the direction of the train.
The header of the map shows the platform number and the
end station name. This end station name helps in relating to
the map after selecting the direction of travel after taking ref-
erence of dynamic information on the PIDS.
Stations passed behind are shown on line maps with a very
light grey colour. This helps in focusing users attention to the
stations ahead on the journey and also making him aware of
other stations already passed.
The interchanges with MRTS, Suburban systems and bus ter-
minals are also shown prominently.
Digital templates for line map layout, colours and details ac-

Line maps
Line map - Rolling stock
Line maps displayed on board Chennai Metro trains follow
the same format as line maps displayed on the station plat-
forms but at a smaller size, as illustrated. Onboard line maps
always show both the lines indicating every station where the
train will be stopping. This is done with an assumption that
the same rolling stock can be used on both the lines without
much changes in the fxed information signs.
Line maps are arranged on as a straight line with crossing at
45 degrees using consistent spacing between stations and
names in a single language always arranged alternatively
above and below the line. Maps in a single language are al-
ways made as a pair to be placed staggered over opposite side
doors. If the Metro cars are always used in the same formation
and the cars never rotated, then two pairs of line maps can be
used. Each will be drawn to refect the direction of the train
from the viewpoint of the passenger reading the map inside
the vehicle. Thus 2 pairs of maps will be designed Tamil and
English.
The interchanges with MRTS, Suburban systems and bus ter-
minals are shown prominently.
Digital templates for line map layout, colours and details ac-
company this manual in separate folders on the disk version.
On Board signage
Similar to the line maps, passengers should receive the same
signing messages throughout their journey, both in stations
and on trains. All signs, labels and notices should use the same
graphic style, language, pictograms and colours wherever
they appear in the Chennai Metro network.
Inside trains signage will mostly take the form of line maps
and labels, providing prohibition notices, hazard advice, safe-
ty information and emergency instructions. In most cases,
train interior signing can be created using the same graphic
elements used on station signing as illustrated in this manual.
Sign and label sizes, typefaces, colours and layouts must fol-
low the same rules and guidance.

Local area maps are an important information source for pas-
sengers leaving stations at the end of their journeys. These
maps follow the standard information sign grid, with an
header on top and section at bottom showing the legend
and other signifcant location information. Station names and
all subsidiary information is always shown in two languages,
Tamil and English.
The example on this page shows the main features required
of location maps, clear Metro line location and nearby roads,
facilities and landmarks.

Station block of local area map on ground Station block of local area map on concourse
Local area maps feature pictograms showing important local
buildings, facilities and landmarks, including hospitals, post
ofces, museums and places of worship. The pictograms illus-
trated have been redrawn taking reference of maps available
in Chennai and other transport network information design
in Chennai.
The last pictogram shown in the fgure (representing the
number 1) may be used as a template to create new picto-
grams, if required.
A digital template for local area map layout grid, colours and
pictograms accompanies this manual in separate folders on
the disk version.
Variations in Local area maps
Local areal maps created for placing in the underground sta-
tions slightly vary in treatment and representation of its sta-
tion area/block.
For a map to be placed at concourse and any level below
ground which typically does not have any visual link to the
exterior environment should show the station area as a block
identifying the exact location of the map and viewing orien-
tation.
For a map coming on the ground foor at the entry/exit points
instead of showing the station block but should clear identify
the entrance points and immediate roads and site features in
the vicinity. The station block here is shown as a dotted line
which shows the extend of the station below the ground.
The following page shows a typical process of creating an
area maps and a sort of details which must be covered while
creating an area map.
Creating area maps is an extensive exercise requiring detailed
on ground survey of the station vicinity areas and mapping
them across the information from ofcial sources confrming
their validity and authenticity. Only approved consultant de-
signers should be commissioned to design local area maps
for individual stations.

The orientation of a map is the relationship between the di-
rections on the map and the corresponding compass direc-
tions in reality.
It is critical that the passengers are able to orient themselves
in the real world while reading the area maps.
The maps shall be designed and positioned such that, its North
is actually pointing north. When a passenger knows where he
is on the map, he can look in a certain directions and see real
landmarks represented on the map in the same direction.

The fgure represents the four possible orientations of the
map, which shall be referred to while creating the area maps.

Emergency sign - photoluminescent (150 x 300 mm)
DESCRIPTION
Emergency exit signs are based on ISO recommendations for
their colour and graphics.
A set of illuminated and Photoluminescent signs in green and
white colour are placed across the station giving directions to
the emergency exits, identifying dedicated emergency exits
and giving instructions related to operating the safety equip-
ment and mandatory instructions at emergency exit doors.
Illuminated signs have better visibility in smoke flled spaces
during a fre emergency. Photo luminescent signs help in di-
recting and identifying emergency messages in conditions of
total darkness or reduced light due because of its self glow.
They are placed along the path at each change in direction
inside dedicated fre exits.
In line with most International signing standards, emergency
exit signing should be kept separate from other directional
signing.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
Most of the normal exit routes from the stations are also the
emergency exit routes so using emergency exit signs on these
routes is not required. If there is a dedicated emergency exit
route or fre-protected stairwell or corridor, these routes must
be marked with emergency exit signs. If the location of these
dedicated emergency exit routes is not readily visible then
signs directing passengers to them should be used.
The shortest routes to the nearest emergency exit should be
signed and supplementary or repeat signs used to counter
any smoke build-up. The fnal exit to a safe situation should
also be clearly marked and fnal egress points should have
down-lighting to illuminate the threshold.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
Signs shall be composed based on the 75x75mm grid and
graphics should be designed as outlined in the page.
These signs shall be made in Plotter cut green vinyl pasted
on the rigid translucent sign face. Internal illumination using
energy efcient lighting system either with its own battery
backup for minimum 2 hours or connected to uninterrupted
power supply.
Photoluminescent signs shall meet the performance specif-
cations outlined in the later sections. Printed on single rigid
substrate matching to the colours specifed and covered with
protective lamination to make them scratch resistent, non-
staining and fxed with secret fxings of anti vandal fxtures.
FIXING

Floor markings
DESCRIPTION
Floor graphics are employed, where there is a requirement
to control the crowd fow. These sign help improve passen-
ger safety by allowing controlled movement around hazards,
warning passengers, marking emergency exits, organizing
queuing areas etc.
PLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
Floor markings are installed wherever there is a need to con-
trol peoples fow and movement. Few typical locations for
foor markings are: at platform ends for safe embarkation and
disembarkation of trains; at platform screen doors to highlight
the priority of passengers leaving the train; at TVMs, AVMs,
TOMs to mark queuing areas; at luggage port to mark direc-
tion.
There may be other situations where foor markings are re-
quired, these signs can be created using the templates shown
on this page.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
Floor graphics can be composed based on the formats giv-
en on this page. The minimum English x height in the foor
graphics shall be 25mm, where the yellow strip is 75mm. This
can be scaled up proportionally based on location and visibil-
ity distances.
The yellow colour is used for foor markings, indicating a warn-
ing messege. In case of general messeges, example: Luggage
Port; the sign blue shall be used as the base colour, with text
in white.
A suitable self adhesive, heavy duty pavement graphic mate-
rial must be used for these markings where the designs/col-
ours are encapsulated beneath a hardwearing translucent top
layer. The material shall be antislip, fade and scratch resistant.
The markings must be inspected for adhesion and wear on a
regular basis.
They may need to be replaced on a yearly basis or removed
completely when passengers are familiar with the procedures.

The sign strategy charts shall be used as a quick reference for
sign application for all the stations on Chennai Metro.
As a very schematic and representational visualisation of signs
in the various typical zones in a station this chart should not
be mistaken with actual signs quantities and messaging.
This chart only demonstrates various types of signs which a
metro user comes across and needs to take decisions and get
information while he approaches the station entrance, buys
his ticket in Unpaid area and then crosses over to Paid area
through AFC gates where he gets directions to the platform
for taking the train.
The charts have been prepared separately for typical single
line station and a typical interchange station on two lines.
These charts represent elevated as well as underground sta-
tions.
These charts do not indicate orientations or foor relationships
between various levels of typical stations.
The orange arrows indicate the movement of people while
the violet arrows shows the movement physically challenged
people.
The strategy matrix is quick reference for checking across all
the typical areas of a station and describes the types of signs
and gives clues on its messaging and content.

5.2 Advertising
The likely confict for competition between wayfnding and
advertising is due to the fact that both mediums are designed
to attract and hold the passengers attention.
Guidelines for the display of both wayfnding and advertis-
ing signs, have been created to allow both mediums to co-
exist in the station environment and occupy key locations for
their purpose and not infringe on each others function,This
is in response to the priority issues of an efective directional
sign system, while optimizing important advertising & retail
revenue opportunities.
Following list of quick thumb rules for placement of advertis-
ing elements is important for the agency planning the adver-
tising. The list is not limited as all the advertising locations for
a station should be pre-planned and coordinated the archi-
tecture elements, signage, electrical, safety and security sys-
tems at the station. All elements of advertising installations
shall be included in combined services drawings.
All the drawings, details of advertising structures with their
placement and sizes shall be duly approved by the employer
and the employer's representative.
1. Advertising panels shall preferably be placed paral-
lel to the direction of passenger movement and should
be perpendicular to the nearest signs to avoid confict.
(Figure 5.3.1, 5.3.2)
2. A minimum space of 2 meters around the signs like maps,
information signs shall be maintained free of any adver-
tising.
3. Advertising, if integrated with signage should not be
sharing the same face of the structure and shall not dis-
tract the attention of a user from important information.
(Figure 5.3.3)
4. In case of integrated structures for important passenger
information in signing and advertisement, the face hav-
ing the signs shall not have any form of advertising. Ad-
vertising panel should be ideally located on the back side
of the information sign face and at maximum right angles
to the main face of the structure having the sign. (Figure
5.3.4)
5. The use of the blank sign face for advertising is applicable
to integrated information structures and exterior totems.
However, direction signs if seen blank on the back side,
shall not be utilised for advertising.
6. Preferably, no supporting structures of signs like the sus-
penders, posts, brackets shall be used to support the ad-
vertising panels. Sign structures can be used for advertis-
ing only if the advertising is not on the same face. (Figure
5.3.5)

5.2 Advertising
7. The span between two columns on the platform, that
have the station name, shall be free of any advertising, so
that the station names are read easily by the passengers
in the train. (Figure 5.3.6, 5.3.7)
8. Advertising panel shall never be placed obstructing the
viewing of a sign.
9. The use of suspended or projecting and free-standing
advertising or retail signs are not permitted. Free stand-
ing signs if used shall be placed against walls or railings
without becoming obstruction to the people movement.
10. Advertising panels installed wall mounted in the corri-
dors, concourses and in circulations areas should always
be fxed recessed in the panelling with the front face fush
to the wall panelling and should not become a hazardous
projection.
11. Advertising panels should not cast a shadow on non-illu-
minated sign at night disturbing the sign graphics.
12. The illumination mechanism used for advertising pur-
pose shall never disturb the sign readability in proximity.
13. Advertising display graphics should conform to the lo-
cal rules and regulation for display of item and products
barred from public viewing e.g. liquor and cigarettes etc.
14. The electricity load requirements of the advertising pan-
els should be separately calculated and should at no in-
stance efect electricity requirements for signages.
15. As heavy or risky structures shall be created for adverti
sing. All structures and specifcations shall comply with
necessary structural details and fnishes to the satisfac-
tion of the employer.
16. All connections and fttings for advertising panels shall be
complete and strong throughout the maintained life.
17. All advertising panels should be regularly cleaned and
maintained.
18. Health and safety measures shall be taken into considera-
tion while designing of advertising panels e.g. anti-fam-
mability requirements and other safety test features.

Chennai metro graphical guidelines | Issue 1 | June 2012
Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase - 1
This chapter of Guideline document outlines the performance specifcations for selection of materials, workmanship and
fnishes for fabrication, fnishing and installation of signs. This is a general guideline and indicative materials which are
commonly used for signage fabrication and execution. Wherever appropriate, the contractor can propose new materials
after detailed discussions with employer and employer's representative. These will have to be supported with adequate
product detail, technical data sheets, samples, prototypes, processed and tested before getting approved for use in the
signage fabrication. The contractor has to submit the shop drawings for sign construction and fxing, to employer and
employer's representative for approval.
Warranty
Contractors are expected to provide the standard warranty and the invoices from the manufacturers.
Warranty certifcate should be issued to the name of employer i.e. Chennai Metro Rail Limited for future traceability and
follow-up maintenance.
Design life
Structures and sign fxings: The design and engineering of all structural components like posts, suspenders, brackets, foot-
ings shall be based upon a 50 year life span with minimal maintenance.
Sign hardware, casings and frames: The detailing, material selection and execution of the sign frames, casings, frames and
its accessories fxtures shall be for a 10 year life span, with routine maintenance. However components like gaskets etc shall
be covered for 4 years.
Graphics and sign faces : The durability of design life of the signage graphics prints and sign faces in general shall be mini-
mum 5 years, with routine maintenance.
Sign graphic standards
All typographic layouts shall utilize typeface and spacing specifed in each sign type drawing.
Letter forms and symbols shall be photographically or digitally rendered in precise, crisp, clean forms. All letter forms shall
be free of ticks, discontinuous curves, line waves, cut or ragged edges, edge build-up, bleeding, surface pinholes, and
other imperfections. Letter forms shall conform to the prescribed proportions of the typographic font(s) specifed by the
guidelines.
All text, arrows, and symbols shall be provided in size, colors, typefaces and letter spacing shown. Text shall be true, clean,
accurate reproduction of typeface(s) shown. Text illustrated on drawings is for layout purposes only contractor shall pre-
pare the Sign Message Schedule for each station. The artworks will be prepared using these sign message schedules.
Colours
Use Pantone colour matching system for graphics and printing and graphic vinyls
Use RAL colour matching system for powdercoating and PU painting.
Sign detailing and construction
Fabrication quality must be of a high standard for all the signs.
There should be no dangerously sharp corners or raw edges and all burrs must be removed. All graphics must be sealed
to resist the abrasive action of weather or washing. All graphics and construction materials must be able to withstand the
efects of heat and cold within the range of -5C and 65C.
All signs must be able to be cleaned back to a visual standard equal to that when frst installed.
In addition to designing the sign structure for dead loads and imposed or live loads - structure must be able to withstand
accidental damage or knocks without becoming dangerous. Graphic surfaces or panels must be easy to replace in case of
damage or change in text. Replacement of complete signs must be straight forward and not need to be achieved by the
use of any specialized equipment. Make provisions for servicing and concealing connections to building electrical system.
The contractor shall ideally not use any proprietary materials, details and processes. This is necessary to make the signage
execution more cost efective not just in its capital cost but also during the designed life by reducing the expenses on
maintenance, upkeep, replacement of damaged elements and making new signs. Easily available low maintenance and
energy efcient materials and systems are recommended.
All illuminated signs will need to meet general electrical safety standards as determined by Indian Standards. It is envis-
aged that all illuminated signs will need to ofer an IP rating to prevent water and dust ingress. Since most of the lights/
luminaries are to be installed within the signs the following Index of Protection are proposed for diferent locations
to ward of ingress of dust, vermin and moisture :
Index of Protection :
1. Indoor signs - I.P. 54
2. Lights fxtures for Outdoor signs - I.P. 65
3. Outdoor junction Box - I.P. 65
Sign Illumination
The majority of the sign structures are illuminated either internally or externally. The internally illuminated sign layouts
have been designed so that only the text and graphics illuminate.
The Illumination levels in the signs shall give uniform spread and brightness to stand out in the ambient lighting condi-
tions during day and night. Burning out due to placement of lamps close to the sign face and dark spots shall be avoided
but carefully fxing the lamps inside the sign frame. A light difuser flm shall be used on the inside for even light distribu-
tion and achieving the desired results. Adequate ventilation to dissipate the heat from inside the sign shall be provided in
not visible areas and locations and detail to ensure meeting the IP rating requirements.
Care should be taken that the Luminaries used in the external illumination should not damage the colours due to constant
exposure and possibly burning due to heat. Lights should evenly spread across the entire sign face.
All lamps and electronics used for sign illumination should utilize energy efcient components and systems with the high-
est standards of safety and ISI marked components.
Structural design
The contractor shall engineer, fabricate and install component parts so that the completed signage will withstand the
inward and outward pressures, specially the wind loads on elevated platforms and pressures exerted by a moving train in
the underground platform. Design shall also cover to withstand building movements including loading defections, shrink-
age, creep, thermal and similar movements and their possible simultaneous occurrences at cases where the vibrations of a
moving train are transferred to the structures and then to the signs . Maximum full load defections, normal to the signage
plane shall not exceed 75% of the design clearance dimensions between the signage member and the panel, glass, stone
or other part immediately adjacent. Contractor shall submit engineering calculations to show maximum defections based
on loads, uniformly distributed, building defections, thermal stresses and erection tolerances.
Anchorage
Anchorage disengagement or breakage shall not occur when an installed unit is subjected to a force equal to 2.5 times the
design load.
Anchorage shall be properly braced in three orthogonal directions (vertical, transverse and longitudinal) to resist specifed
loadings from any direction (both positive and negative pressure).
Anchors and supports shall be designed and located as to allow a uniform distribution of anticipated wind loads, and shall
not impart any unauthorized torsional loading to spandrel beams, cause excessive stress on the structure, cause excessive
defection, inhibit thermal movement or confict with clearances for equipment. Eccentric loads imposed into the building
structural elements by the signage anchorage are not allowed. Eccentric loads created by the anchorage of the signage
systems shall be neutralized by the addition of bracing or other means required.
Standards
All the work of design detailing and execution of signage shall confrm to following listed codes but not limited to it. Best
practices in the industry shall be suitably selected and presented for their application and approval of employer and em-
ployer's representative.

No visual defects are allowed by inspection and the material should ofer a minimum 10years warranty, against yellowing
and loss of light transmission.
Workmanship for Polycarbonate
The surfaces of Polycarbonate come covered with a masking flm on both surfaces for protection during transport, storage
and fabrication. The masking flm should be left in place during fabrication work and all marking-out drawn on the flm. It
is recommended not to remove the marking flm until necessary to prevent dust collection and accidental surface scoring
or scratching. However, care should be taken not to have the surface scratched during handling.
Before pasting the vinyl graphics it is advised to wash the sheet surfaces to be decorated with clean, fresh water using a
soft cloth. This has the advantage of removing all traces of static charge from the sheet after removal of the flm which
might otherwise attract dust. For all general purpose cleaning operations, polycarbonate should be washed simply with
clean cold water to which a little detergent has been added. The use of any solvents such as methylated spirits, turpentine,
white spirit or proprietary window cleaning products is neither necessary nor recommended.
Flatness of the sheets is very important for the signs to appear neat.
The cutting shall be done using powered saw to a tolerance of +/- 1mm. The edges shall be cleaned of any bur and cham-
fered to make the Polycarbonate comfortably sit inside the frame.
