PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
BHEL is in the field of Steam Generation, serving the needs of various users, who are in need of
reliable and efficient steam generators. Modern steam generators are large complex equipment
incorporating the latest advancements in the fields of heat transfer, material science
electronics and other engineering sciences. In order to make the best use of these
components, it is necessary that the operator be familiar with the steam generator
components.
Realising this need BHEL has come up with an equipment familiarisation programme for the
user Engineers.This book describes the details of the boiler components which would be of help
to the user Engineer in familiarising himself with the equipment.
This book is not intended to replace the operation and maintenance manuals supplied by BHEL
for individual contracts. Those manuals continue to serve their intended purpose and this book
will be complementing the manuals since the design principles of components are not dealt with
in the operation manuals.
It is hoped that the user Engineers will find this book helpful in achieving better standards of
operation and maintenance of steam generators.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
The response to the first edition of this book has prompted the need for a revised
and updated second edition. This edition is a result of the suggestions and reviews of the
various users of the first edition. Sketches and Photographs have been added as appropriate
to provide greater clarity on the write-up. Two chapters - one on Boiler Commissioning
and one on Boiler Operation have been appended to this edition.
The need for a concise and comprehensive collection of this nature is increasingly felt
in the industrial as well as academic circles. It is hoped that this edition would continue to
serve the large group of professionals and academicians concerned with this subject.

PREFACE
TO THE FIRST ELECTRONIC EDITION
The First Edition of this book was released in 1979 and the
Second Edition was released in 1981. Since then, there have been
several requests for a revised and updated Third Edition. In the
meantime, the copies have become scarce and it has become a
herculean task to reprint the same in the original form. Instead, it has
been decided to make effective use of Information Technology and
bring it out as an E-book. In short, this Third Edition is simply an
electronic version of the second edition. There is a proposal to revise
and update this edition further to make it current and to make it
available to a larger audience. Many chapters are to be re-written and
many sketches and photographs have to be re-done. Suggestions to
this end are welcome from the readers. After consolidating the
suggestions, the second electronic version will be released.
