Keep The Beat !!
Keep the Beat is back again! Running for a total of eight
years, this student organized music/arts fundraiser for War
Child Canada will be held Saturday, August 23 at Lakeside
Park, Nelson and will run from 10 am to 10 pm. With a
wide selection of musical entertainment and dancing, this
community event is sure to get your feet tapping and your
fngers snapping.
Te entire event is in association with War Child Can-
ada, a non-government, non-proft organization which
works with children and their families in war torn coun-
tries around the world. By supporting War Child Canada
with profts from the event, and by spreading awareness
among the people, Keep the Beat will also be directly sup-
porting children and their families through War Childs
main areas of focus: opportunity, education, and justice. In
previous years, Keep the Beat, on average, has had revenue
of twelve thousand dollars and we hope to do the same this
year. Every penny earned will be donated directly to War
Child Canada. Not only does Keep the Beat provide posi-
tive outcomes with community growth and a chance to
showcase local talent through musical and arts perform-
ance, but it also brings the community together for a day
of music, dancing, and family fun.
Tis year, Keep Beat has a stel-
lar line up with musicians from
around the Kootenays. Musi-
cians such as recent Starbelly
Jam performers James Lamb and
Mrs. Strange, local director of
the Symphony of the Kootenays
Jef Faragher, the youthful, stu-
dent-led LV Rogers jazz combo
Swing Teory, and international
talent Erica Dee. Closing the
night of will be Roy Has Fire.
Tis youthful band has toured
around the Kootenays creating
a name for themselves playing a
rock/ alternative mix.
In addition to this spectacular
day of music, this year Keep the
Beat will also have a ffy-ffy raf-
fe and a silent auction featuring
many beautiful items donated by
local businesses, a kids activity
tent with bracelet making, hula
hooping, face painting and vari-
ous kids games, and a commun-
al banner. Due to the generous
support from the community, all
activities will be free with a dona-
tion box. Once again all money
taken in on August 23 will be do-
nated directly to War Child Can-

round-up events this fall. Free disposal for residen-
tial household hazardous waste will be available to all
residents of the RDCK and municipalities within the

Michael Mloszewski And Friends
Play At Te Langham
Te upcoming concert called A Celebration of My Music-
al Life with Michael Mloszewski and friends will be a once
in a lifetime experience not to be missed. Tis intimate and
awesome concert will take place at the Langham Cultural
Centre in Kaslo, Saturday, August 30 at 7 pm. Tickets are $20

Michael learned how to play guitar from a couple of
Gordon Lightfoots early song books and moved on to Bob
Dylan and then Te Beatles. When he was 18 he wrote
a lot of poetry and was invited to join a group of much
older writers who went by the name W3 (Winnipeg Writ-
ers Workshop) which was made up of novelists, poets and
songwriters (many successfully published) that led him
onto the ground foor of the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1974.

Summit Lakes Toadfest Is Back
School summer holidays may be winding down, but
there is at least one more family oriented activity to place
in the calendar before they are completely over: Toadfest
2014! Te free event at Summit Lake Provincial Park just
south of Nakusp, will be held on Tuesday, August 26 be-
tween 4 and 7 pm and on Wednesday, August 27 between
10 am and 1 pm.
Toadfest is an opportunity for the public to get up-close
and very personal with the western toads, especially the
tiny toadlets, of Summit Lake. Attendees can search for,
collect, and safely transport the toadlets across the high-
way. Te event is to both help the western toad population
at Summit Lake, and to raise awareness about their nat-
ural history, habitat needs, and the challenges that they
face. Every year, for example, tens of thousands of toad-
lets, each not more than the size of a dime, get squashed
by vehicles as they attempt their frst migration from the
shoreline of Summit Lake, across Highway 6, to upland
habitat.
Toadfest is coordinated each year by the Fish and Wild-
life Compensation Program (FWCP), with support from
BC Parks, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Re-
source Operations, Columbia Basin Trust, and the Min-
istry of Transportation and Infrastructure. While they
are still relatively strong in numbers at Summit Lake, their
distribution is shrinking and the centre of the worlds dis-
tribution has shifed from the USA to BC, says Trevor
Oussoren, program manager for the FWCP in the Colum-
bia region, a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province
of BC, First Nations and public stakeholders. Tey are
an indicator of ecological health and an important part
of complex food web, so its extremely important that we
look afer them.
Te event, now in its ffh year, provides an excellent
opportunity to talk to biologists, and get hands-on experi-
ence at helping an amphibian in need. Western toads are
listed federally as a species of concern and are blue-listed
(vulnerable) in the province. In addition to helping toad-
lets safely across the highway, there will be other activ-
ities to see and do, including live
aquatic insects, amphibians, and
reptiles on display, as well as infor-
mation on invasive plants, bears
and other wild animals living in
the region.
Te very dry, warm weather
we experienced in July and early
August seems to have resulted in
the migration being one to two
weeks earlier than usual, says
event organizer Angus Glass.
So we may not be hitting its
peak, but still intend to safely
carry as many toadlets across
the road as possible. Te public
are reminded not to collect or
transport any toadlets across the
highway outside of this organized
event.

Lake Provincial Park cannot be

toadlets across the road will be provided. Park-
ing is limited and carpooling is encouraged. For

Ravencourt Features Te Classics
At Teir Final Concert
Friday, September 5 will see an evening of classical music
on violin and piano highlighting the fnal concert of the
season at Ravencourt B&B in Upper Passmore. Beginning
at 7 pm Martine denBok will be featured on violin and
will be accompanied on piano by Kevin Heshedahl with
special musical guests appearing throughout the evening.
Martine moved to Nelson in 2013, afer teaching and
performing in the Victoria area for several years. When
not performing with the Symphony of the Kootenays,
the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Edmontons Opera
Nuova orchestra, or touring with Victorias DieMahler
String Quartet; she can be found teaching an ever increas-
ing group of aspiring violinists in the area. Pianist/vocalist
and conductor Kevin Heshedahl has been a musical part
of Martines life since she was 12 years old.
Some of the musical selections being played in this
magical straw-bale B&B include: Sonata for Violin and
Piano by Jean-Marie Leclair; two Boleros by Bohm and
German; show pieces by Monti, Elgar, Kreisler and
Weiniawski; and Singing the Night Among Fishing Boats
by Li Guo Quan. Its been an amazing series of musical
events at Ravencourt this season and the fnal perform-
ance will likely be as rewarding as the previous ones. Tey
have been made possible with support from the Slocan
Valley Arts Council.

Hope Air Provides Medical Flights
For West Kootenay Region

Beneft Concert With Ash & Bloom
At Finleys Bar And Grill
Te musical duo Ash & Bloom (Matt McKenna and
James Bloemendal) will be performing in a beneft concert
for the Nelson & District Hospice Society at Finleys Bar

ly event, with burgers and beer (or some other beverage)

Ash & Bloom are easier to describe than to classify. Te
music is subtle acoustic, maybe a little reminiscent of
Simon and Garfunkel, but with an Indy edge. Te lyrics
are smart and socially aware; they cut deep, but these guys
have a sense of humour and theyre interactive.

Close your eyes and picture this; its the frst hot day of the
year, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and everything
around is lush, green, and pristine. Te lakes and rivers seem
to sparkle and dance under the suns warm rays. Youre head-
ing out to spend this Kootenay summer day
with friends kayaking and mountain biking,
taking advantage of all this incredible region
has to ofer. While we are extremely for-
tunate to live in an area with such amazing
outdoor facilities, it is important to remem-
ber the impact we have on the environment
around us, especially when it comes to the
spread of invasive species.
Whether youre into hiking, mountain bik-
ing, kayaking, or an array of other outdoor
activities, the Kootenay region is the place
for you. However what should we be keep-
ing in mind in terms of our impact on the
environment around us? When it comes to
the prevention of the spread of invasive spe-
cies, there are many things we can do to help
while enjoying the outdoors. Play-Clean-Go,
an initiative dedicated to help curb the spread of invasives,
states, Invasive species have many pathways of spread. For
instance, weed seeds move easily in soil so, muddy boots or
vehicles can move weed seeds. Some weed seeds have special
hooks to help them hitch a ride. Tus, weed seeds can spread
on our shoes, socks, clothing, and pets.
However, the transportation of pesky weeds through soil
is just one aspect of our trouble with invasive species. Te
Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC), has
discovered many cases where water-born invasives have
hitched rides on vessels such as boats, kayaks, and other
water equipment that has then been reintroduced into our
lakes and rivers, thus causing damage. By learning how to
inspect and clean our equipment and belongings, we can
begin to reduce the chance of inadvertent-
ly spreading something that could harm
the pristine outdoor environment we so
cherish. Here are a few tips to keep in
mind this summer;
During campfre season use only local
or certifed frewood; if you are travelling
make sure all the wood you bring is used
before returning home
While hiking, walking, or biking make
sure to stay on designated trails designed
for this purpose
Leave clean! Before returning home
make sure to check your belongings and
remove any dirt, plants, or bugs to prevent
an invasive species from tagging along!
Although summer is an amazing time of year in our
Kootenay region, it is important to remember the impacts
our outdoor activities have on the spread of invasive spe-
cies. Tis is an issue that afects everyone, and in order to
maintain our incredible surroundings it is up to us to be-
come informed, attentive, and accountable in preventing
the spread of invasive species. You can help stop the spread

Dark Fire Cloud At Silverton
Dark Fire Cloud and Te Lightning Band (DFC) per-
form at Silverton Memorial Hall on Tursday, August
21. Doors open at 7:30 pm, show starts at 8:30 pm, $10
admission at the door. Tis dance band performs music
inspired by zydeco, gospel, soulful R&B and reggae. Front
man Dark Fire Cloud (Tadeus Cloud Prejean) hails from
Louisiana. With his echo harmonica strapped on, he is the
lead vocalist and guitarist, and has a musical style distinct-
ly his own. He is joined by Shuggy Milligan on percussion
and J Buttle on bass. Tis is highly danceable music!
Dark Fire Cloud and the Lightning Band (DFC) is the
product of a lifelong partnership between Hugh (Shuggy)
Milligan and Tadeus (Cloud) Prejean. Te zydeco music
of the Louisiana ghettos, the spiritually elevating gospel
of the southern Baptist tradition, and the soulful R&B
sounds reverberating throughout all Americana have
helped form Clouds musical style. In early 2013, Cloud
and Shuggy were joined by bassist J Buttle. With the
rhythmic foundation set by Shuggy and J, Darkfre Cloud
and the Lightening Band.
