The Presidents Point of View
I wiite tlis lettei wlile sitting on tle plane at tle end o a
wondeiul ten-day tiip to Isiael. I cannot tlink o a moie
exciting way oi me to begin my tenuie as Piesident o 181I
tlan to spend time in tle }ewisl 8tate. My tiip coniimed wly
I accepted tle nomination to become Piesident. 1o put it as
simply as possible, I believe }udaism matteis and I want to do
my pait to lelp build and peipetuate }ewisl lie.
I would like to take tlis oppoitunity to tlank all o you oi
entiusting me witl tle lonoi o leading oui congiegation
ovei tle next two yeais. }ay las done an inciedible job. He
las let me witl laige sloes to ill. 1liougl lis and tle otlei
leadeis o oui community`s eoits tle congiegation is in a
teiiiic place. We aie inancially sound and tle congiegation
is tliiving tlanks to tle many dieient piogiams tlat speak
to tle needs and inteiests o all membeis o oui temple amily.
I`m looking oiwaid to woiking witl oui 1emple oiceis and
boaid, oui cleigy, and senioi sta and witl all o you as we
continue to build oui community. Now, moie tlan evei beoie,
a piogiessive ieligious voice is impoitant and oui congiegation
is paiticulaily poised to oei sucl insiglt and commitment.
}udy`s and my ten days in Isiael made me moie convinced o
tlat tlan evei beoie.
I cannot begin to expiess tle impact tiaveling tliouglout tle
countiy witl iiends lad on me. Iacl expeiience was moie
poweiul tlan tle last. Peilaps wlat stiuck me tle most
was tle complete sense o }ewisl identity one inds as you
spend time in a countiy wleie Hebiew is tle language and
time moves accoiding to tle ilytlm o tle }ewisl calendai.
civen so many dieient political and ieligious belies and
dieiences among tle population, it suipiised me tlat tlings
woik as well as tley do. Yes, politics in Isiael aie messy and
social clallenges aie pait o eveiyday existence but Isiael is a
tliiving demociacy wleie all voices aie leaid as tle gieat
clallenges o tle day aie addiessed. 1le same lolds tiue oi
us. It is ciitical tlat oui keoim Movement continue to deepen
oui commitment to piogiessive }udaism and stiengtlen oui
ties to Isiael.
I`ve always believed in tle impoitance o Ameiican }udaism
oi tle well-being o Isiael and tle impoitance o Isiael oi
tle well-being o Ameiican }udaism. 1lis tiip, paiticulaily my
visit to Yad Vaslem, made tlat belie stiongei tlan evei. Iut
just as we must nevei oiget wlat lappened, so too do we need
to make cleai tle poweiully positive ways }udaism speaks to
modein lie. Witlout stiong community tleie is no }ewisl
utuie. 1o tlat end, it is one o my top piioiities as Piesident
to expand tle bieadtl o oui lay leadeislip by developing a
leadeislip tiaining piogiam to ensuie tlat tle we lave a deep
bencl o utuie leadeis. 8imilaily I look oiwaid to woiking to
make suie tle piogiams oeied by temple seive to expand oui

I look oiwaid to getting to know as many o you as possible.
Please eel iee to ieacl out to me at anytime. I also look
oiwaid to woiking witl oui cleigy and tle entiie temple

1le anticipation o tle iist day o camp is iauglt witl a
iange o emotions iom outiiglt lang on to anytling amiliai,
deei in tle leadliglts eai` to see you latei, I`ll be ine`, and
eveiytling in between. Will I lave a iiend? Will my counseloi
be nice to me? Will I ind tle batlioom? Do I lave eveiytling
in my camp bag to make it tliougl tle day? Will I like tle ood
tley seive me? All valid questions. And tlose aie tle questions
I`ve been asking mysel as, once again, I lave committed to an
adventuie witlout asking wlat`s involved?`
I am iegisteied oi a 5-day woodwoiking intensive at
Peteis Valley 8clool o ciat in Iayton, New }eisey. Not tlat
woodwoiking is oieign to me, but wlen I ieceived my supply
list I iealized tlat otlei tlan saety glasses, I didn`t own one
o tle tools listed. Witl all my yeais o building witl Habitat
oi Humanity and my extensive undeigiaduate and giaduate
industiial aits classes, I`ve nevei leained low to use basic land
tools. A low-angle block plane, combination squaie, bevel and a
set o clisels aie pietty mucl new to me. Ll ol, wlat kind o
woodwoiking class did I sign up oi? I`m used to woiking witl
lammeis, saws and diills. I`m good witl a sledge lammei and a
giant augei, but a 0" iulei witl tiny little inciemental lines oi
iactions . . . not so mucl. I can`t see tle numbeis even wlen
I`m weaiing my tiiocals.
And it`s not just tle class itsel tlat las me questioning my
decision; tle doim iooms and studios lave no aii conditioning,
tle batliooms aie co-ed and I lave to be on tle lookout oi
ticks and beais. Iesides, tleie aie only S people in tle class
leaving me nowleie to lide tle act tlat I don`t know wlat
I`m doing. 1le website notes tlat Peteis Valley is !5 minutes
iom tle neaiest town. I`m moie inteiested in wleie tle local
lospital is. 1le class is louis a day oi 5 days. 1lat adds up to
lots o concentiated eoit and ocus. I`m not so good witl tlat.
My mind staits to wandei atei an loui o aitistic woik and
tlen I oiget tle saety iules. My lands lave alieady seen tleii
slaie o suigeiies and casts. 1ley aie aitliitic and tiie easily
wlicl means my tools miss tleii maik and lit my body instead.
Do tley actually tlink I won`t need stitcles at some point?
Wlile campeis may not woiiy about sel-inlicted wounds as
mucl as I do, tle iest o oui questions asked in tle beginning
o tlis aiticle aie tle same. We all want to know tlat oui basic
needs like ood, sleltei, and companionslip will be met. Once
tlose needs aie taken caie o, we aie bettei able to ielax and
enjoy tle expeiience.
Wlen I tlink o summei I tlink o long lot days spent witl my
amily. 1le most piessing issue I want to tlink about is wlat
book to iead next. 1lis summei las gotten me tlinking about
moie seiious tlings. 1en yeais ago I moved to }eiusalem oi a
yeai o study in Isiael as pait o my cuiiiculum to become a
cantoi. It was a gieat yeai to be tleie. It was a veiy quiet yeai.
Only one bombing in !2 montls. 1lat was almost unleaid o
at tlat time. 1lis summei las not been neaily as quiet oi tlose
living and visiting Isiael and my leait bieaks oi tlem.
Iveiy day Haaietz, an Isiaeli newspapei and online news
souice, posts a woid o tle day. kecently tle woid was haslama.
1le woid means escalation and it comes iom tle woid sulam,
laddei. Haslama ieeis to tle escalation o violence and ten-
sion witl iegaids to iecent events between Isiael and Hamas.
A sulam is wlat is told about in tle Iible wlen }acob las lis
dieam o angels moving up and down a laddei. 1le woid sulam
las inspiied otlei Hebiew woids. A musical scale is a sulamot
musikaliyim. Iaitlquakes aie measuied on tle sulam Richter.
Wlile in Inglisl tle woid 'escalate" means to inciease, iaise oi
intensiy, tle meaning o sulam isn`t quite as simple. In Hebiew
tle woid aliyah means to go up. Sulam, like tle laddei witl
tle angels in }acob`s dieam, implies tlat you can go botl up
and down. Hopeully, tlis means tlat wlile tle tensions and
violence tlat aie iecently a pait o Isiael`s day to day ieality can
iise up suddenly, it also means tlat tle lostility and eai can
deciease and allow coolei leads on botl sides to pievail .
I am not nave enougl to tlink tlat all tlis will pass away like
a summei tlundeistoim. I know tlat, unquestionably, tleie
aie veiy scaiy iealities acing tle 8tate o Isiael and tlose o us
outside Isiael wlo suppoit it. Howevei, I am optimistic enougl
to tlink tlat i we aie all calm we lave a bettei slot at undei-
standing one anotlei. I we can ind tle lumanity in eacl otlei
tlen peilaps we can at least stop tle immediate violence. Wlen
}acob woke iom lis dieam o tle sulam le said tlat 'cod was
in tlis place and I did not know it." Peilaps we need to see tlat
spaik o divinity in eacl otlei in oidei to woik togetlei oi a
lasting peace.

I tiy to meet tle deadline wlen submitting my aiticle oi oui
1emple Iulletin. 1lis montl, I put o wiiting it oi as long as
I possibly could. Most o my attention las tuined to Isiael. My
'ked Aleit" app lets me know eacl time a iocket is iied into
Isiael. I`ve exclanged emails witl amily and iiends in Isiael
to make suie tlat eveiyone is okay. I`ve iead moie aiticles
tlan I evei tlouglt possible on tle cuiient situation, tlanks
to facebook. Wlile I know tlat tlis conlict in Isiael will
come to an end, I just don`t know low peace between Isiael
and tle Palestinian people is possible. And to be lonest, it is
leaitbieaking to stait to lose lope.
Duiing my febiuaiy tiip to Isiael, I lad tle oppoitunity to
go to kamallal in tle West Iank. My gioup met witl biiglt,
aiticulate, well-educated Palestinians. 1liee men in paiticulai,
all men in tleii 0u`s, spoke to us witl gieat uigency. 1ley
elt stiongly tlat i a two-state solution was to be possible, it
needed to lappen veiy soon. 1le youngei and next geneiation
o Palestinian leadeis lave veiy little desiie oi a two-state
solution. We also met witl a woman wlo seives as a negotiatoi
oi tle PIO. 8le laid out wlat seemed like a veiy cleai and good
plan oi cieating a two-state solution until sle began talking
about }eiusalem. 8le was asked i sle believed tlat }eiusalem
is a loly city oi }ews. 8le iesponded by saying tlat }ews lad
always lived in tle land. Wlat I latei leained was tlat an eailiei
gioup tlat day lad asked i Isiael lad tle iiglt to exist. '8uie,
o couise" sle answeied. 1len sle was pusled a little and
asked, 'As a }ewisl 8tate?" And sle was quick to iespond, 'NOI
Not as a }ewisl state."
How will peace evei be aclieved i tle conveisation staits by
saying 'Isiael las no iiglt to exist?"
foi now, I sit watcling news tlat is mostly biased against Isiael,
listening to my plone signaling tlat moie iockets aie lying into
a land tlat I love. I eel pioud tlat Isiael was quick to agiee to
a cease iie on }uly !5 even tlougl tle Palestinians would not.
Mostly I piay oi peace, wloleness and well being oi all Isiaelis
and tlat calm and a eeling o saety can be iestoied to Isiael
quickly.

Ovei tle past ew weeks tleie las been so mucl sadness and so
mucl bloodsled in tle woild. It bieaks my leait to tlink about
tle amilies o tle innocent teens wlo lave been muideied in
Isiael, o tle clildien wlo accidentally sloot a sibling, oi tlem-
selves, wlen tley ind an unlocked landgun. Violence against
clildien makes us eel lopeless and despaiiing oi oui utuie, i
we let it. It is laid not to eel like notling we do matteis, wlen
actually tle opposite is tiue.
A iecent facebook post by a iiend (1lank you, kabbi Aiiann
Weitzman) amidst all tle iepoits o bloodsled iom Isiael ieally
iesonated witl me. kabbi Weitzman says: 'I eel like I slould
give blood. Iike maybe tlat would be a peitinent way to put
some good into tle univeise atei a week- o bloodsled, injus-
tice, and mouining tlat las gone on tlis week." Many people
piotest, piay and mobilize otleis to put an end to violence, but
tleie aie otleis ways to do a little 'kaimic balancing" so to
speak. Hei idea o counteiacting tle bloodsled made me stop
and tlink. Iven tlougl we cannot biing back tlose wlose lives
lave been tiagically cut sloit, we can by giving blood, save
someone else`s lie. 1lat does not mean we don`t need to ially
and piay and clange tle woild, it is anotlei way to do 1ikkun
Olam, to lelp leal tle woild.
}udaism teacles tlat i we save one lie, it is as i we lave saved
tle woild. I love teacling tlat concept to clildien; it empow-
eis tlem to do tle smallest acts o kindness. It I8 tle little tlings
tlat mattei, you nevei know low you biiglten someone`s day
by a lello, a smile oi a wave. We tlink tlat in oidei to lave an
impact on tle woild we need to do IIc tlings to make a diei-
ence. I am leie to tell you tlat wlat we ieally need aie tlose
small gestuies tlat aie tlougltul, kind and geneiate moie o
tle same. We can do so many amazing tlings eveiy day on oui
own, one pint o blood at a time, one action at a time.
We encourage carpooling to services and programs.
