Dear Friends in Christ,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
With the holidays over we can begin to get down to some work that has needed
to be done for a very long time. As many of you know that Dora's Father pass
ed away in June of 1985. We have been living with him since 1980. After her
mother passed away in 1978 Dora's Father got a yard man to do the work around
the place. Well when we moved in the man just up and quit on us one day. We
to this day do not know why, but that left the work up to us, which was shared
by the boys and I. Well when he became sick we just let the yard go. We felt
that many times we were in the jungles of Africa. We just did not have the
time to do it so with that and then the construction of a sewer line in the
area made it a task that was going to take quite a bit of time. Well with
the help of my two sons, Stephen and John, and a young man from the church,
Paul Alo, two lawn mowers and two weed eaters, we have succeeded in getting
the place to look like it once was. The Lord has given us great strength to
be able to carry out these tasks for Him. It also gives us an opportunity to
become closer as Christians. My son Stej^en gave up four days of his vacation
to help and John \dio could have had other plans as he did not have school for
two of those days willing helped. I just wished now that I had taken the
proverbial before and after pictures. We hauled about 15 loads to the local
di^. We once again are thankful to the LUTTRELLS as they lent us their
pickup truck to haul off all the leaves and brush and branches to the dump.
In the past month we have had many come and visit the services. We hope that
they will return to the services. To those of you who are not familiar with
Hawaii it sort of reminds you of Ephesus in the Bible. Every religion that is
or ever has been is here and people do not relate to the gospel as readily as
some do in other countries. The other night Bro. Luttrell and I were counting
just the different churches in the area of the Maili Christian Church and with
in a two mile radius we came up with fifteen(15) different churches. So you
can see why it is essential that we try and make the best of our efforts here
in the 50th State. We covet your prayers for our work here and we know that
with these prayers we are going to win the battle against Satan to confuse the
people of Hawaii.
Our Bible Club seems to be doing very well. We are averaging about 5 to 7 each
week and we are hoping that when these young people begin to realize what they
are really learning that they will become great ambassadors for Christ.
- 2 -
Well it looks like that the Sholtis* are going to be Blessed again in about 4 mon
ths. Our NO. 2 grandchild is on the way and as most grandparents we just can't
wait for the happy event. As for the no. 1 grandchild, Bridgette, she Is as uncon
cerned about the matter as long as she gets her attention. We shall see what happens
when the time comes.
Our No. 2 son, John, continues to do good in school. We are proud of him as he is
very faithful to the Lord and comes to the services so willing and is a great help
in the service in serving the Lord's Supper and taking up the offering. Eleanor
is also very helpful. She came to me one day and ask if she could do something for
church. Being only 1 years she was eager to do something and so I began to think.
Many times people ask me our attendance and all I could tell them that though we
were not very big in attendance that maybe we had 10 or 12 in our services. And so
when I ask Eleanor about this she was so glad because it is a very important job
and now we begin to double check each other and sometimes she will forget someone
and we will both have a good time talking about who came and just good fellowship
about the Lord and His Work here at Maili. She is coming along very well on her
piano lessons. We hope that she will be our future piano player. At present we
only have Mrs. Luttrell on Sunday Evening and Wednesday Evening. The Luttrells help
at the Waipahu Church of Christ on sunday morning and we are limited many times as
to the hymns we can sing.
Dora continues to work at Burger King. The job is beginning to take its toll on
both of us. We want to see the church grow and without her job the bills go unpaid
and we just continue to pray that more funds will be coming in. We do need $1000
a month to make it here in Hawaii. To those of you who receive this letter please
share our message with a friend. And PLEASE continue to pray for our efforts here.
fWe are hoping to get an article in HORIZONS soon. As soon as we can get all of our
information on the proper forms and back to them. We feel that they do a great job
of getting the information out and we praise them for their patience with us.
Our Pre-School is still in the paper work. Many of you know how that is when the
local government get into the act. We have passed some of the inspectors. The
part that is holding us up now is that we need to re-apply as we just did not get
some of our work done in time and so the young lady who is going to be running the
school told us that she will re-apply and that possibly by June, 1986 we should be
starting our Pre-School. Please Pray for this effort and our teacher, MRS. CHRIS
TINE KAKALIA. We just know that we are going to reach many for the Lord through
the children who come to the school.
Once again we want to say '*MAHALO NUI LDA" to all who have sent financial support
and also to those who keep our work in your prayers daily. May the Lord continue
to Bless you all as you serve Him day by day.
Aloha In Christ,
Joe, Dora, John^and Eleanor Sholtis

Dear Friends in Christ,
Greetings in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ.
We first want to apologize for not writing for the past two months. Our typ^
writer was down in the shop and it has been quite a deal trying to get things
done around here and also to let you fine people know about our work. But we
-are back in business and hope to keep you informed as to how the Lord's Work
here in Hawaii is doing.
Our attendance has been holding around 10 to 15 with a high of 21 this pas month.
Several new folk have come to visit and we hope that they will come into the fold
here at the Maili Christian Church.
Just as we were ready to start service one Sunday evening a car pulled into the
church parking lot. I was beginning to pick out the church hymns for the evening
service and so Bro. Charles Luttrell went to talk to the young fellow idio got out
of the car. Many times folk are just lost and want to know directions to a cer
tain place. And so I continued to pick out the hymns and the next thing we knew
that the young fellow was looking for a church to worship. Upon being invited in
we had a great discussion after the service and found out that he and his wife
were s^rching and someone had 4-nformed that that they should contact the Church
of Christ or Christian Church as they were the closest to the Scriptures. The
young man is in the service and he really is searching. They have three children,
all girls, and she thinks that she is expecting again. We would ask that you
pray for this young couple as they have had some problems and he is very sincere
at trying to make a go of his marriage and family life. They need our prayer
support and pray that we may be able to see them in the fellowship of the Maili
Christian Church while here in Hawaii in the service of their country.
On a different note we would ask that all of you be in prayer for BRO. CHARLES
LUTTRELL. He has had some very bad breathing problems over the past several
months and it has caused him considerable worry. Recently he was told that he
is to cut down on his salt, of which he Tikes very much. For 23 y^rs he- and
his ^wife and family labored at the Palolo Valley Qiurch of Christ and now is
semi-retired helping with the Waipahu Churchof Christ and the Maili Christian
Church. On February 16, 1986 they brought their membership into the Maili
Christian Church. We are blessed with this couple and their efforts in getting
our congregation again. Both Dora and I cannot praise them enough for their
st^dfast service in the Lord. Brother Charlie and Henrietta are just an in
spiration to \diat you can do if you are faithful in the Lord. Be in. prayer
for him at this time for he needs the physical strength to carry out the spirit-
ul efforts we need to do in the areas that we are working in here in Hawaii.
Our Sunday evening service has been very good. We are averaging about 10 and we
are using filmstrips and discussion after. We have just finished a series on
JOSEPH and currently we are on a series on MOSES. It has been a time of discovery
for many of us as just the time you think you know it all about these all to
familiar characters the filmstrip will bring something up that you may have either
forgotten or never knew at all. There is a question and answer time after and
all participate. Also our Wednesday Evening Service is going along very well.
In this service we began studying the book of Hebrews and went through James and
now we are on the book of I Peter. Those who attend are into the word and wef are
learning much from it.
The Bible Club that we started in November of last year continues to be a source
of excitment to us. Mrs. Luttrell does an excellent job with the children and
though sometimes we may only have a few and then some, more we get excited at what
the children have learned. These are children around the church who have never
been reached before and we would that you also pray for them. They have no back
ground whatsoever in the church and^ they seem-to-realTy take hold a& t^ what is
being told to them. At present we are in the Gospel of John and these young peo
ple are learning about the Gospel of Love. We hope that through our love for
them they will come to love the Master of LoveJesus Christ.
Once again we want to say a big MAHALO NUI -LOA to all who have supported us over
the years and we hope that we can continue to be worthy of that, support. We are
still short of funds. We would ask that if you personally or your church or a
Bible School class would like to support us we would be very thankful. God has
blessed us and we do need the support very much. If we do not get the necessary
funds it looks' like that I will have to go back to work and we will not be able
to do the things that we are doing at the Maili Christian Church. It is very
vital that we raise at least $1000.00 a moiith in living-link support. Our for
warding agent BRO. SAM FISHER and his wife KIT are trying very hard to raise the
necessary support for us. on the mainland. We have gained a few more since our
last writing who send directly to us. We would encourage you to either send it
to Bro. Sam or me as we will be trying to keep in good contact over the next
few months concerning our work here. We do want to acknowledge the support of
the LAKESIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST for its wonderful support in accepting us sight
unseen whenr a recomendation was needed recently for an article that we had writ
ten. MAHALO NUI LOA to you fine Christian folk.
Before we sign off we do want to say that we are grandparents again and this time
Tt is^ a Grandson. His name is Jonathan Ikaika ^oltis, weighing in at 41bs. 8oz.
on March 19, 1986 at 3:27am. He is doing fine and so are all the family members
We will tell you more in, the next newsletter.
May the Lord Bless you all and we do appreciate hearing from you.

Joseph and Dora Sholtis came
to work with the Maili Church of
Christ (now Maili Christian
Church) in 1964. This
congregation was started by
Edith Shimmel and Ethel Jones in
1950 after being incarcerated in
the Philippines during World War
II.
Joe was born Januarys, 1941 in
North Braddock, Pennsylvania to
Joseph and Alice Sholtis. He
became a member of First
Christian Church In Braddock,
where he was quite active. He
graduated from Kentucky
Christian College in May 1964. It
was there that he met Dora Hee of
Hawaii.
Dora was born August 21,1940
in Honolulu, Hawaiito Robert and
Ah Lung Hee of Chinese
ancestry. She attended the Maili
Church of Christ from its
beginning in 1950 and was also
quite active In the church
program. She graduated from
Kentucky Christian College in
1962. Dora and Joe were married
June 25, 1962 by Howard Ray,
now editor of HORIZONS
magazine. They have three
children: Stephen, 21; John, 17;
and Eleanor, 8.
As Priscilla and Aquila, Joe and
Dora have spent most of the past
26 years as "tent-making"
missionaries. Lack of adequate
financial support has made this
necessary. However, the work
has suffered so Joe has recently
"stepped out on faith," going full-
time with the work, even though
sometimes their ends do not
meet. They need to raise their
support of $150.00 monthly to
$1,000.00. If you can help the
Maili Christian Church become
once again an effective witness to
the Lord, contact the forwarding
agents listed below.
Recently many have come to
visit the services at Maili. Hawaii
is much like Ephesus of New
Testament times in that every
religion is present. There are 15
different churches in a two-mile
radius of the Maili Church. The
Bible Club is doing well, however,
and a pre-school is being
planned. Joe and Dora ask
prayers to help win the battle
against Satan in the 50th state.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Greetings and "aloha" in the name of out Lord and Master Jesus Christ.
Dora and I arrived in Hawaii on September 2, 1964 to begin work with
the Maile Church of Christ, which is also Dora's home-church. Stephen
Edward, our son, was born shortly after out arrival in the islands (January
12, 1965).
The attendance during our first month with the Maile work numbered
between 25 - 30 each Lord's day, one Sunday it was down to 15. There
were only 6 Sunday-school classes at this time; many were children
with very few young people and adults. Today, the average attendance
is around 70; tl^ere ate still many children, but there is also an increase
in the youth group and among the adults. There are now 11 Sunday-
school classes, 8 adult teachers and 3 high school juniors teaching.
As on many fields of service in the Lord, there are always discouraging
and joyous incidents, thus it is no different in Hawaii. The need of the
Lord is great, yet man neglects to seek this spiritual need because he
does not care; the Lord's Day is a "pleaseue day" because man has
worked all during the week and feels he "needs" to spend this day for
himself. How sad and disheartening it is to see even the members of
God's church feel this way, caring only for themselves and not being
concerned with the spiritual growth of the church in the community.
Our part in the Maile work is minor compared to the work of the Holy
Spirit guiding dedicated Christians who labor so faithfully with concern
and love for lost souls. Many times we have asked fellow-Christians
on the Mainland to pray with us for the needs of the church at Maile;
truly the Lord has answered these prayers as He sent families to help
in the work. We know we will lose these families because they are
military and will sooner or later be transferred, but we trust the Lord
will send others to fill their places.
Please continue to pray for the work of the Lord in Hawaii as the gospel
of Jesus Christ is needed in the lives of those who are here. May God's
blessings be upon all who labor in His service daily.
