Annual Meeting of the Lees Pond Association
July 12, 2014
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services presented the
VOLUNTEER LIMNOLOGIST AWARD in 2014 to Bev Nelson in
recognition for her dedication to and enthusiasm for lake monitoring and for
her involvement in watershed and lake management in her community and
the State of NH. Congratulations Bev!
The meeting was called to order at 10:15 by President Bev Nelson
Present: Bev and Jim Nelson, Donna and Bob Clark, Karin and Keith
Nelson, Paula and Roland Young, Barbara and Ken Ganem, Bridie and
Brenda Bannon, Vince Buoniello, Tina Wright, Fred Cox, Bill and Rheta
Keylor, Peggy and Jim Hoburg, Don and Suzanne Wiedenheft.
Bev introduced Bill Gassman of the Moultonborough Conservation
Committee who spoke about the Moultonborough Watershed Project.
The Winnipausakee Watershed contains 13 sub watersheds. Lees Pond is
a very important part of the Moultonborough Bay Inlet sub watershed that
contains dense housing and relies exclusively on septic systems. 1500
pounds of phosphorus are contributed annually to this watershed. The
ratio of watershed to water surface is a high 31:1. The lake is also
impacted by algae and plants, fish, water clarity, oxygen, in lake nutrients,
depth and size, human activities, and climate.
A restoration plan will be developed with the help of a consultant and the
LRPC/LWWA. $55,000 has been allocated to pay for the plan. It will look
at storm water runoff improvements, septic system maintenance, road
maintenance, controlling phosphorus, pesticide use, bubblers to increase
oxygen, filters, and landscaping at the waters edge among other conditions
that affect the water.

According to Bill Gassman, education is the most important tool that we
have to improve our lakes. Development cant be stopped, but each
individual homeowner can make improvements to his property.
At 11:15, the business meeting was called to order. The Treasurers
Report was unanimously accepted. The total income for the year was
$1,950 and the total expenses were $389.55. The balance as of June 30,
2014 was $8119.05. For a more detailed report, please see our web site at
leespondassociation@weebly.com.
The 2013 minutes were unanimously approved.
Karin Nelson told us the good news about milfoil in Lees Pond. The DES
did a survey last fall. Please see our web site. Single or small infestations
were found. All were taken care of by pulling including a fairly large patch
at the boat launch. There will be no herbicide treatment. 11 bags of milfoil
were collected. This compares with 13 acres that were treated last year.
Karin made a plea for people to serve as lake hosts this year. Volunteers
inspect boats that are being launched and educate boat owners about non-
native plants and animals that can be spread by boats.
New Hampshire Fish and Game did a survey of Lees Pond and reported it
to be a fine warm water fishery.
The Moultonborough Conservation Commission and New Hampshire
Lakes using students from Moultonborough Academy are working this
summer to improve water run off at the boat ramp. Ed Harrington and Jim
Nelson are supervising.
Bev Nelson gave a report on the quality of water in Lees Pond.
Phosphorus is increasing possibly due to septic systems, animal waste,
and lawn fertilizer. Please see a detailed report for 2013 on our website.
The Lees Pond Association received a grant of $480.95 from the Jody
Connor Memorial Fund thanks to Bev. The money will be used for a deep
water sampler and calibrated line to use in sampling our water quality. It
was suggested that a program might be started by the association to
monitor septic systems around the pond.
A motion was made by Bill Keylor to elect the same officers for 2015. This
motion was unanimously passed. President Bev Nelson, Vice-President
Bob Clark, Treasurer Karin Nelson, Secretary Paula Young. The steering
committee consists of: Bev Nelson, Bob Clark, Karin Nelson, Paula Young,
Bev Neighbors, Barbara Ganem, Bill Keylor, Ed Lazdowski, Jane
Harrington, and Vince Buoniello.
It was unanimously voted to continue to support NH Lakes with a donation
of $300. It was unanimously voted to raise the Lees Pond Association
dues from $75 to $100. It was unanimously voted to spend $300 to test the
water for phosphorus.
The next meeting of the Association will be July 11, 2015 at the home of
Peggy and Jim Hoburg, 202 Lees Mills Road, Moultonborough.
The Don-Lau Realty Trust Property at the North end of Lees Pond is for
sale. The asking price has been substantially reduced. The
Moultonborough Conservation Commission, the Nature Conservancy, and
the Lakes Region Conservation Trust are discussing the possibility of
buying this property to maintain wildlife. Jim Nelson and Ed Harrington are
representing the Lees Pond Association.
Bev adjourned the meeting, and we enjoyed a delicious pot luck lunch.
