Contamination Control
Assessment
Service Data Sheet
Description
ExxonMobil engineers:
Inspect critical equipment systems for abnormal
operating conditions
Secure oil samples for evaluation of on-site conditions
Submit samples to laboratory for detailed analysis
(where required)
Provide immediate recommendations to improve
operating conditions (where needed)
Provide linkage to other condition monitoring programs
such as vibration analysis, leakage control, drain interval
optimization, and filtration
Application
ExxonMobil engineers work with local plant maintenance and
engineering personnel to:
Conduct contamination control inspections without
disrupting operations
Establish inspection schedules based on need and
criticality of the equipment
Review and note normal and abnormal operating
conditions such as temperatures, oil levels, pressures,
pump and system noise, condition of breathers and fill
screens, shock loading in pressure lines, operating
environment (dirt, coolant, water, etc.)
Identify units in immediate need of corrective actions
Recommend portable filtration, reclamation or change-
out and flushing where appropriate
Identify systems with excessive oil make-up
requirements (with help of plant personnel)
Correlate current contamination control results with
previous data
Consult on correction of system conditions that have
lead to component failures
Report inspection results and a prioritized list of
recommended corrective actions
Document the value of the service and of implementing
the corrective actions recommended
Potential Benefits
Potential benefits could include the following:
Reduced oil consumption by optimizing drain intervals,
reducing contamination and reducing leakage
Increased equipment availability through lower failure
rates
Improved equipment component life and operating
efficiencies
Lower maintenance costs

Safety, Health and Environment
ExxonMobil engineers:
Are attuned to the hazards of handling, storage, and use
of petroleum products
Coordinate efforts through designated plant personnel
Strictly observe the sites safety rules and ExxonMobils
safety practices
Verify equipment electrical and mechanical lockout,
proper tagging and potential explosion hazards prior to
working on or inspecting equipment
Provide recommendations to reduce the hazards
associated with spill, leakage and fire
Provide applicable product safety data (MSDS) for the
lubricants supplied by Exxon and Mobil
Are available to support company-required safety training
For Mobil Planned Engineering Service (PES)
customers, work with plant personnel to integrate safety
and health parameters into program objectives
Consolidation of lubricants to the fewest correct types
thus reducing the potential for misapplication
Lower used oil disposal costs
Safety and environmental improvements
Deliverable
Prepare an Engineering Service Report including the
following:
A written assessment of the systems inspected
Results of the lubricant samples analyzed
Recommended actions to address the contamination
Common Opportunity Areas
Contaminated lubricant (solvents, wrong oils, water, dirt,
metalworking fluids)
Temperatures too high or too low
Aeration of oil (foaming)
Pressures too high (hydraulics)
Restriction in pump suction (cavitation / aeration)
Leakage rates too high / low oil levels
Use of wrong lubricants
