Enforcement of Safety Rules in Undergraduate Laboratory

Dear Student,

This notification shall serve as a reminder for you to observe safety rules whenever you make use of the
laboratory facilities. The following safety rules and regulations have been extracted from the school's
safety manual and you are expected to comply fully. Kindly note that penalty shall be imposed for
violating safety rules (refer to important notes below).

Conduct
Do not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory.
Do not bring in friends who are not involved in the project.
Do not play or listen to audio equipment (radio, walkman etc) while conducting experiments.

Personal Attire
Long hair should be tied back.
Jewelry on the hand can be ruined if it comes in contact with chemicals and should be removed.
Long pants must be worn in the laboratory.
Open toed shoes, slippers or high heel shoes are not allowed in the lab.

Personal Protective Equipment
Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times while in the laboratory. Remove contact lenses prior to
entering the laboratory.
Gloves must be worn when performing experiments.
Caution must be taken to prevent chemical contact with the skin or clothing.
Lab coat must be worn in the laboratory.
Covered shoes must be worn in the laboratory.

Safe Work Practices
Be attentive at all times and be fully aware of what you do in the lab. Ask your teaching instructor/
assistant if in doubt.
Never leave an experiment unattended. Inform the teaching instructor/assistant or lab staff if you
must leave the lab.
User's work area should be kept clean and tidy.
Clean up all chemical spills immediately and inform lab staff for assistance.
To avoid contamination of laboratory supplies and replace all lids after use.
Use all electrical and heating equipment carefully to prevent shocks and burns.
Never handle broken glassware with your bare hands; use a broom and a dust pan.
Report all accidents, breakages to the instructor or lab assistant immediately.
Label all items clearly, including name, date and contents.
Become familiar with the location of safety eye wash, fire extinguisher, fire blanket and safety
shower.
Return all used items promptly after completion of your experiment.
After the experiment is completed, turn all equipment off, making sure it is properly stored, and
clean up your work area.


Important Notes :

10 marks shall be deducted from student's lab score for violating safety regulation for the first time
20 marks shall be deducted from student's lab score for violating safety regulation for the second time
0 mark for student's lab score for violating safety regulation for the third time
20 marks shall be deducted from student's lab score for not restoring the instrument/equipment to
initial state after completing the experiment
