A. EAGLE EYE: Event Description: The team is taken to an Industry where they can stay for 8 hours without disturbing the actual production facility or operations. They are expected to find any problems from all levels of operations say bottleneck, improper line balancing, Material handling routes, Quality constraints, Resource utilization (material, labor, cost, machine) , Line efficiency ,Distribution chain, etc then it is compared with idle line or with similar process to benchmark. In next 16 hours the team is expected to present it to the Judges (Including persons from the Industry) and they are weighted by them. Ex: If the line runs by batch production with efficiency x and capacityy. Analyze the product history and club similar products together reduce the variety and compare it with Single flow continuous line & sub assembly lines check for efficiency & capacity. Provide solution with the installation cost of new line, variety it can handle, proposed efficiency & capacity, new machines to install etc. Rules: Round 1: Online Problem Solving Competition + Round 2: Teams will be taken to a Industry where they were asked to Improve the Industry Practice. How it can be done: Primary constraints- Site, time, Team and budget. Secondary constraints labor, Procurements. B. So, this event focus on teams ability to create an efficient production line which use limited resources and sells their produce to the customers. How it can be done? Extra points given on teams diverse background. Points given on line capacity efficiency etc Round 1: Case study on production line and teams selected based on Solutions Round 2: Asked to design & build a production line with 5 workers + limited resources Round 3: Sell the finished products in open market. Resource Required; Ex: Part -1: Teams are provided with charts, inks, pencils+ some items.(1hr) They are asked to make a single product. They need to design a production line that runs on a particular lead time, efficiency etc.(2hrs). Then they are asked to start their production line and run it for half an hour. Part 2: Teams are then given 4 hours to sell their product and rise the cash. The team can sell through any medium say online-ebay, olx etc or directly to customers .They can also give discounts for their sale. Business Managers of today are living in challenging times. Business targets had never been stiffer, work pressure and managing the complexities of competition is keeping them on their toes all the time. Today, success or failure of a business and the Organisation is dependent wholly upon the Organisations ability to be flexible and to respond to the external changing environment. Only those who are able to adapt to the changes and those who are able to assimilate and learn from tomorrows technology are able to run the race. Digital technology has changed the rules of business game and good Operation management Practices helps to bring a big competitive advantage. Operations Management is a systematic approach to address all the issues pertaining to the transformation process that converts some inputs into output that are useful and could fetch revenue for the organization. Operations management in Food Processing Industry : Food processing and manufacturing businesses must operate in planned, organised and systematic ways if they are to be effective, efficient and profitable. Operation management helps to provide best service of food processing and accessories at lowest cost possible. This objective can only be achieved if each and every operation within the organization is managed optimally. The various operations within an organization that needs to be managed are financial operations, capital management and human resource management. The three features that the organization concentrates on are quality, speed and satisfying customers. The following things are important parametric constrains the industry need to focus on , a) structure of organization & manufacturing practices of the industry; b) relationship with farmers, supermarkets and wholesalers and the consumer marketplace; c) market trends in meat/poultry/dairy consumption; d) threats and opportunities; e) influence of animal welfare legislation and issues; f) issues of globalization and food security and sustainability. Raw material availability: The main strategies used by big player like McDonald have to maintain the inventory is JIT, Just in Time. The idea behind this is to reduce the cost of inventory management. This also helps in providing fresh food to the customers. This strategy is successful since the mangers in the restaurants do a daily stock count at the end of the day to keep a track of the available things and things that have to be ordered. The food processing units of future should be able to deliver in JIT.
Good manufacturing practice: Product specifications with process control, product control, production documentation and production records; product recall systems can add good value to production. These practices tracks the performance and also helps in improving the performance. The food processing Industries in developed countries like UK,US are working heavily on this aspect.
Quality and food safety management systems: The concepts of quality management like quality assurance quality control, concept of quality management systems concept of food safety systems, quality and food safety system standards International Standards Organisation ISO 9001, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), ISO 22000, quality and food safety audit; cost of quality measurement and analysis are been incorporated in food industries to deliver better qualities at lower cost. The quality concepts of manufacturing Industries are now adapted by Food processing Industry also.
Process control: The need for reasoned design and control, systems approach to process design and management; process specifications; statistical process control; packaging process control have urged the Industries to adopt those practices. The use of key performance indicators are also been adopted to control product improvement in certain Industries.
Process improvement: Production concepts like 3-sigma and 6-sigma process control; DMAIC; concept of Lean Manufacturing; origins of Lean Manufacturing and Toyota Production System; Just in Time; identification and elimination of waste; 7 wastes; Five S; Kanban; Poke-a-Yoke; Kaizen; automation; standard operating procedures are also practiced.
Problem solving tools and techniques: They can recognize problems and turn it as the source of opportunity by developing analytical and critical skills. The problem solving tools and techniques; brain storming; Ishikawa diagrams; decision trees; critical path analysis, value stream mapping help to reduce the mistakes and issues that is encountered in the processing industry.
Environmental management: With more concern towards environment food processing Industries will try to bring more environmental friendly practices. The food processing plants now Identify and categorize waste, waste management (containment, storage) and disposal; waste reduction; water balance; water management and reduction of use; effluent management and treatment are managed now. Getting a ISO 14000 with environmental audit are must to Industries of future. The concepts of tracking carbon foot printing & measuring environmental impact are helpful to reduce waste due to logistics & supply chain.
The main challenge in these industries are Quality and cost and by following the Operation management practices the firms can Improve their Quality of Production without compromising the cost.
