With the days before school in the single digits, the color guard of Cherry Hill East practiced its routine on the front lawn of the school
last week. The guard was not alone, as all of the fall sports teams have been gearing up for the start of the season.

Township declares
hospital property in
need of rehabilitation
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Changes will soon be coming to
Cherry Hills Kennedy University
Hospital, as the township pre-
pares to pass a rehabilitation plan
for the property.
At a council meeting on Aug.
11, a resolution was passed de-
claring Kennedy Hospital as an
area in need of rehabilitation. In
addition, council passed an ordi-
nance on first reading approving
a redevelopment plan for the
property. The plan will be up for a
public hearing during the Sept. 8
meeting.
Kennedy Hospital and the
township have been in discussion
about the rehabilitation plan for a
number of months. The hospital,
located at the corner of Chapel
Avenue and Cooper Landing
Road, had been looking at rehabil-
itating and modernizing the facil-

Parents receiving news from
Cherry Hill Public Schools will be
seeing some changes when the
school year starts.
The district has renamed its
electronic newsletter CHPS
Weekly and has redesigned the
format, according to public infor-
mation officer Barbara Wilson.
Our redesigned newsletter in-
cludes a weekly message from Su-
perintendent Maureen Reusche,
as well as more photos and easier
access to information, Wilson
said.
Parents and community mem-
bers can subscribe to the newslet-
ter on the district website,
www.cherryhill.k12.nj.us. A box
at the bottom of the homepage al-
lows users to subscribe.
Changes to multimedia are
nothing new for the district. It
launched the Cherry Hill Public
Schools phone app in February.
This year, the app has been updat-
ed to include Stream, which al-
lows the user to access multiple
categories of information from a
single screen.
The district is welcoming two
new principals this year. Eugene
Park, the new principal at A. Rus-
sell Knight Elementary School, is
a familiar face. Park taught at
Sharp Elementary School from
2001 to 2011 before taking a job as
an assistant principal in the
Southampton Township School
District. Park will take over for
George Guy, who will be the new
principal at Rosa International
Middle School.
The district will also have a
new principal at Barton Elemen-
tary School. Sean Sweeney is tak-
ing the position after serving as
principal at Larchmont Elemen-
tary School in Mt. Laurel. He is
taking over for Farrah Mahan,
who was named the districts di-
rector of curriculum in July.
The district also added eight
new full-time positions, two of
which are in the technology de-
partment. Reusche said the new
personnel were added to help pro-
vide support for the districts
computers with the PARCC test
scheduled to begin this year. All
three of the districts middle

Camden City youth to learn
how to golf at Woodcrest
Twenty Camden City youth involved
with Lifting Up Camdens Youth, or LUCY,
are getting the opportunity to
experience golf through The
First Tee Program, a national
program that focuses on teach-
ing golf skills and building character
through core values.
The First Tee impacts the lives of young
people by instilling life-enhancing values
and promoting healthy choices through
golf. The eight-week program at Woodcrest
Country Club in Cherry Hill gives Cam-
dens youth chance to experience life out-
side their city and exposure to a sport they
otherwise wouldnt have a chance to play.
Woodcrest Country Club has donated its
facility to the program. Instructors from
the Woodcrest Golf Team as well as the di-
rector of golf and assistant pro are all
working with the summer pro-
gram participants. Club mem-
bers are volunteering to help.
The partnership was spearhead-
ed by The Joseph Fund, a Camden-based
nonprofit organization dedicated to sup-
porting the Ministries of St. Josephs Pro-
Cathedral, including LUCY.
The First Tee Program is Mondays
through Sept. 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

INTERIMPUBLISHER O
ne more week. Thats all that
we have left of summer. Tech-
nically, there are about four
weeks left, but in the lives of us New
Jersey residents, next Wednesday
when most schools go back in session
for the 2014-2015 year marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun OK, maybe thats a bit dra-
matic.
But its not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, theres plenty to
be excited about, and weve been hard
at work covering this excitement al-
ready.
Our senior associate editor, Nick
Cohen, loves this time of year. Thats
because the end of August means the
start of one of his passions covering
sports. Nick has been on the summer
sports camp trail for a week or so now,
and he will continue to be out and
about on local fields as our high school
teams continue to prepare for the up-
coming season.
Soon, youll see some of the photos
Nick and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, youll begin read-
ing more about the teams, players and
coaches who are involved in the games
they love. And soon, in two weeks to be
exact, youll be receiving The Suns
regular High School Fall Sports Pre-
view guide.
Our fall sports preview special sec-
tion is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and fea-
ture stories as well.
Nick is reaching out to every high
school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But
were calling on parents, coaches and
even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of up-
coming issues of The Sun, as youll
soon see. And not just high school var-
sity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshmen teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we cant do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended com-
munity.
Have a story idea, a score, a picture?
Send it over.
If we cant send an editor out to do a
full-length story and photoshoot, well
make sure your team, sport, league or
club is still covered.
Our doors are always open as are
our phone lines and inboxes. Lets
make this fall sports season one to re-

Freeholders award municipal

recreation grants
The Camden County
Recreation Facility
Grant Program provides
opportunities for little
leagues, soccer pro-
grams and a variety of
other local institutions
to expand and maintain
their facilities. The
grants, funded through
the Camden County Open Space Preserva-
tion Trust Fund, are presented to local
recreation programs that keep our kids on
the field and youth sports vibrant in our
area.
Thanks to this program, key recreation
improvement projects have been indenti-
fied to enhance the quality of life for resi-
dents across Camden County. In many
cases, these projects would not have been
considered to be undertaken with strained
local resources. Every year these grants are
funding important projects. This years
projects are no different, from playground
and athletic field additions to new multi-use
trails and facility improvements at commu-
nity centers.
The Freeholder Board approved the rec-
ommendations of the Advisory Committee
to award the 2014 Recreation Facility En-
hancement Project Grants at our August
meeting. We are now in the process of vis-
iting the municipal organizations that have
been identified for funding. This years ap-
plications represented a wide range of proj-
ects throughout the county to keep our
fields green and our kids active. We appre-
ciate the hard work and planning that went
into each request.
This year, Camden County Recreation
Facility Grant Program grants will benefit
worthwhile projects in Audubon Park, Bell-
mawr, Berlin Township, Brooklawn, Cam-
den City, Cherry Hill Township,
Chesilhurst, Collingswood, Gibbsboro,
Gloucester City, Gloucester Township, Had-
don Heights, Haddon Township, Laurel
Springs, Lawnside, Lin-
denwold, Magnolia, Mt.
Ephraim, Oaklyn,
Pennsauken Township,
Pine Hill, Runnemede,
Voorhees Township,
Winslow Township and
Woodlynne.
Camden County is
committed to preserving
our parks, natural areas and farmland not
only for their scenic value, but for their con-
tinued use and enjoyment. To ensure that
our children, and their children, will have
the benefit of these facilities for years to
come, the Camden County Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund Advisory Com-
mittee was appointed by the Freeholder
Board. The diverse committee provides the
Freeholder Board with guidance regarding
the implementation of the Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund. The Camden
County Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund was created by the Freeholder Board
in 1999 in response to overwhelming voter
support of an open space referendum
placed on the ballot in November 1998.
Each year, municipal organizations are
invited to submit an application detailing
the enhancements planned for their exist-
ing recreation facilities for consideration to
the Advisory Committee. Although the re-
quests for funding are limited to $25,000 per
project each year, municipal organizations
may submit additional requests for funding
in the following year. The projects must be
completed within a one year period.
For a complete description of the up-
grades funded by the 2014 Camden County
Recreation Project Grant Program, visit

other questions about County services,

A flurry of musical activities
will bring a broad spectrum of
entertaining and educational mu-
sical events to the senior resi-
dents at Spring Hills Cherry Hill
Assisted Living Community in
Cherry Hill. They are all support-
ing this years theme of The
Magic of Music marking 2014
National Assisted Living Week
the week of Sept. 7.
The focus on music is espe-
cially significant for seniors,
said Rachel Helfand, executive as-
sistant of program development
for Spring Hills Senior Communi-
ties, as there is such a powerful
connection that music provides
our residents. The transforma-
tional effect of music continues
as people age. It can provide joy,
comfort and, in some cases, bring
back memories experienced long
ago.
The weeks activities at Spring
Hills Cherry Hill will include mo-
tion picture salutes to musicals
Funny Lady, Evita, The
King and I, and Fiddler on the
Roof, an Andre Bocceli concert
on video, a musical spelling bee
and a performance by the Lake-
bridge Boys.
There are two major high-
lights, a talent show and the visit
from composer Andrea Green.
The Spring Hills Got Talent
Show takes place on Saturday,
Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. and will feature
performances by residents, staff
and community members. On
Monday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m., its the
exclusive senior community pres-
entation of Henry Nevisons new
documentary On the Other Side
of the Fence, an inspiring be-
hind-the-scenes look at the mak-
ing of a musical written by
award-winning composer, play-
wright and music therapist An-
drea Green. Its a wonderful
demonstration of how people
learn about each other and re-
spect their differences through
the power of music as the film
shows children from the HMS
School for Children with Cerebral
Palsy in Philadelphia as acting
partners with able-bodied chil-
dren from Germantown Friends
School. Green will join the resi-
dents as they view the documen-
tary, provide insight into the mak-
ing of the documentary and have
a sing-along with residents.
This will be a very special
week for all of us at Spring Hills
Cherry Hill, said Stacy Gibson,
director of recreational services.
Music obviously plays a big part
in everyones life, but the joy and
memories it brings, especially to
seniors, will last with them forev-
er.
The general public is welcome
to attend several of the free musi-
cal activities. For further infor-
mation on dates, times, and avail-

The Employer Support of the
Guard and Reserve presented
Janice Quay, clinical manager at
AtlanticCare Regional Medical
Centers Mainland Campus, with
its Patriot Award on July 24.
An employee serving in the Na-
tional guard or reserve, or the
spouse of a guard or reserve
member, can nominate individual
supervisors for support
provided directly to the nominat-
ing member and his or her
family.
Quay is a resident of Cherry
Hill.
For every single Guard mis-
sion, drill, past deployments and
future deployments, Janice Quay
has always been supportive,
wrote Chaddy Cantona, ARMC
Emergency Department techni-
cian, and member of the New Jer-
sey Army National Guard, in his
nomination of Quay for the
award. She not only takes time
to accommodate my military obli-
gations, but my personal life at
home as well. She cares about her
employees and works with my
schedule. She is sincere and truly
supports everything I have to do.
The support I receive from Janice
and the rest of the staff allows me
to fulfill my duties without hav-
ing to worry about my civilian
job. Although we have only
worked together for a short time
due to my deployment, she has
showed continuous support of
my service.
Recognizing supportive em-
ployers is vital to ESGRs mis-
sion.
ESGRs 54 state vommittees ac-
tively promote awards as a key el-
ement in furthering employer
support, while strengthening re-
lationships between service mem-
bers and employers.

schools, Cherry Hill High School
East and Richard Stockton Ele-
mentary School participated in
last years field test.
The districts big construction
project this summer was the re-
placement of boilers in all 17
schools. Assistant Superintend-
ent of Business James Devereaux
said the boiler project is on sched-
ule to be completed no later than
Oct. 7.
The district hopes to cut heat-
ing costs with the new boilers.
The heating system is equipped
with thermostats that automati-
cally adjust the amount of heat-
ing needed for a building depend-
ing on the temperature.
The new boiler pumps will
sense temperatures throughout
the school, Devereaux said.
The asbestos removal portion
of the project has already been
completed. Devereaux said all
buildings are now asbestos free.

ity.
This is really going to take it
from 1962 to the 21st century,
said Paul Stridick, the director of
community development for
Cherry Hill.
Lisa Morina, vice president of
government and external rela-
tions for Kennedy, said the project
is in its preliminary stages.
Kennedy is waiting for council to
pass the plan before moving for-
ward with the project.
It allows us to align more with
the townships designation, Mo-
rina said of the plan.
Stridick said the redevelop-
ment plan is the townships vision
of how the property will be devel-
oped. It outlines zoning regula-
tions specific to the property and
gives a general overview of what
the new hospital may look like.
The new zoning regulations in-
crease the maximum building
height from 60 to 75 feet. Stridick
said the current patient tower
does not allow adequate space for
hospital equipment. He believes
extending the height limit an
extra 15 feet will make a huge dif-
ference.
It allows them to get that
much more space, Stridick said.
To help fulfill open space re-
quirements, the township is en-
couraging the hospital to include
green initiatives, such as green
roofs on the buildings, rain gar-
dens on the property and solar
car ports on the top floor of the
parking structure. The plan in-
cludes a rain garden in an area
currently housing surface park-
ing for the hospital.
The plan also encourages the
hospital to achieve LEED certifi-
cation to receive credit toward
building and lot coverage.
Because Kennedy has not gone
into specifics about the project,
Morina is unsure whether the
hospital will pursue these green
initiatives.
The plan outlines the area and
does encourage certain kinds of
initiatives, Morina said.
Kennedy Hospital was eligible
for a rehabilitation plan after
meeting the states criteria.
During its investigation of the
property, the planning board de-
termined the buildings were in
substandard condition mainly
due to their age, under-utilization
of space and the age of
the water and sewer infrastruc-
ture.
All three criteria were reasons
the township could declare the
property an area in need of reha-
bilitation.
We only had to meet one of
those six criteria, Stridick said.
We hit on three of those six cri-
teria.
Morina said the hospital is
looking to make changes to im-
prove the experience for patients.
Weve looked at a variety of
community needs, she said.
There was a huge community
needs assessment.
Morina said Kennedy Health
System will have specific infor-
mation on its plans for the hospi-
tal after the second reading of the
redevelopment plan.
