MALJEN MOUNTAIN
Maljen Mountain is situated in Valjevo Mountains massif, together with mountains: Sokolska, Medvednik, Jablanik, Povlen, Magle and
Suvobor Mt. (with Rajac). It stretches east-west in the length of 25 kilometers; it is located in western Serbia (UTM: DP17, DP18, DP27
and DP28). The highest peak is Kraljev Sto, at 1,104 m above sea level, followed by Crni Vrh at 1,098 m. Other highest peaks of the
Mountain are: Straara (1,061 m), Golubac (1,056 m), Paljba (1,051 m), Velika Plea (1,037 m), Veliko Brdo (1,036 m), Vlasovi (1,033 m),
Zabalac (1,011 m) etc. A large part of the mountain plateau includes Divibare under the same tourist resort which is located 37 km
southeast of Valjevo. The Divibare is a highland located at an altitude of 980 meters above sea level, surrounded by peaks and
saddles.
The climate of this area can be characterised as moderately warm and humid. The annual amount of precipitation increases with
altitude. The soil types of Maljen Mt. is diverse: from mountain chernozem and podzols to semi-peat soils on waterlogged places with
very high content of organic matter. The geological structure of the mountain is dominated by silicates, thus Maljen Mt. is classified in
the high mountain regions.
In the vertical profile of Maljen Mt. several altitudinal vegetation zones are differentiated. In the submountain zone, at the lowest
altitude, xerophile oak forests Quercetum frainetto-cerris are dominated. At higher altitude, xeromesophile sessile oak and hornbeam
forest Querco-Carpinetum serbicum are presented. In the mountain zone, with an increase in altitude between 500 and 1000 meters,
dominated by montane beech Fagetum montanum and beech-silver fir forests Abieto-Fagetum silicicolum, black Pinetum nigrae and
white pine Pinetum sylvestrae associations, silver birch Betulum pendulae association, manna ash and hornbeam Fraxino orniOstryaetum caprinifoliae and white willow-black alder Saliceto albae-Alnetum glutinosae forests. Meadow communities are of
secondary origin and were formed in forest habitats that were under anthropogenic pressures. Meadows are situated mainly in the
habitats of white and black pine as well as beech-silver fir forests. Deforestation by human activities caused that Maljen Mt. began
progressively populated with the elements of meadow/pasture vegetation. Nowadays, there are remnants of forest vegetation at the
completely formed meadows. Here's an overview of some characteristic species of Maljen and its submountain area as well as some of
the common species can be found on the mountain.
