JOB 3 :

TO determine the metacenteric height of a floating body and to
locate the position of metacenter, center of buoyancy and center of
gravity.

OBJECTIVES:
To determine the metacentric height
To locate the position of Metacenter, Center of buoyancy, Center of gravity .

APPARATUS:
Model ship
Water tank
Jockey weight

THEORY:

BUOYANCY:
Buoyancy is the tendency of a fluid to lift a submerged body.

FORCE OF BUOYANCY:
It is the resultant upper force or thrust exerted by a fluid on a submerged body.
Force of buoyancy is equal to the weight of volume of liquid displaced by body
on which this force acts.

CENTER OF GRAVITY:
It is the point through which weight of body act.

POINT OF BUOYANCY:
It is the point where force of buoyancy is acting.

METACENTER:
It is the point of intersection of symmetrical axis of o floating body and new line
of action of a force of buoyancy.
It can also be defined as the center of rotation of a floating body.

METACENTRIC HEIGHT:
It is the distance between center of gravity and metacenter it is denoted my CM.
It is the measure of static stability of floating body.
When metacentric height is very large then period of rolling become very small
which is uncomfortable that is why ships used by passengers are designed by relatively
small significantly high metacenter

FORMULA:
CM= W
o
/W (x/tan)
W
o
= weight of jockey
W = weight of ship or floating body
x =displacement of jockey
= angel of rotation
CM 1/period of rotation

METACENTER RADIUS:
It is the distance between center of buoyancy and meta center

FORMULA:
BOM = I/V
I = second moment of intertia
V= volume of liquid displaced

CONDITION OF STABILITY:

W =FB

Weight of floating body = force of buoyancy

Metacenter must be above the center of gravity to have resistive couple
generated by weight of floating body

PROCEDURE:
1. Measure the dimension of the model
2. Fill the tank with water and place the ship model in it
3. Bring the jockey weight at point 0 and balance the plumb line
4. Displace the jockey weight for different value of x and note down the angel odf
rotation for each displacement.
5. Find out MR and COB and use the observation to calculate MH

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:
Jockey weight= 0.75lb

Length of ship =20 inch
Weight of ship model = 10 inch
Radius of semicircle=r=5 inch
Volume of liquid displaced =v=A x b = r

(10cm)=785.39

Weight of liquid displaced = x v =28.34 lb

Metacentric radius =I/V = 2.123 inch

Position of center of buoyancy COB = 4r/3 = 2.122in

COMMENTS:

Position of metacenter= BOM- position of center of buoyancy
=2.123-2.122
=0.001

Position of center of gravity= metacentric height- position of metacenter

If larger will b the value of metacenter height more will be radius of body which is
uncomfortable
