Rationale for doing this portfolio

This course addresses the issues of understanding one self. The artifacts which were chosen to

represent this concept were personally selected by the group members. We believe that they

efficiently address and consensually explain, sufficiently, the concept of self and some of its

branches as well as identity and the varying faces of identity

Summarization on article#1

According to the article self concept is what you understand about your self. It has to do with

your social character or abilities and your way of thinking. How you are socialized physically

and psychologically can change your self concept, by the way you act or portray your self within

the society.

Your self concept and your self- esteem are derived from your attitude. Self-esteem is

your opinion of your self. It you have a low or poor self -esteem then you have a low image of

your self on the other hand if you have a high self-esteem you have a high opinion of yourself ,is

highly motivated and have the right attitude to succeed.

High self-esteem is crucial as it affects your potential to be successful where as low self-

esteem means poor confidence and you’re easy to give up rather than facing challenges and this

has a direct bearing on your habits.

In relation to the poem which speaks about a person with a very high self-esteem it states

that it does not matter what anyone says about him or her because he or she has a very high self

concept. He or she concept cannot be changed as she or he has a positive attitude and values that

was instilled while growing up.

Summarization on article #2

The article speaks about gender bias within the society. The article states that within society

women have specific roles which are basically to support, wait on and respect men. Different

women have specific roles for example wives are to support, take care of the house chores, have

children be obedient/submissive and tolerate men’s’ characteristic flaws. Mistress or girlfriends

are just to satisfy sexual needs and escort men to social functions with friends. On the flip-side

men are supposed to be the professionals, the more advanced species, they are to be served, the

dominators that is the “pit-bull” of the relationship, they are free to exploit, explore and express

themselves.

“Great women or wives should not be bosses or managers instead they are supposed to

choose jobs or career paths that are sub-servants to the top management position. These careers

are jobs such as church secretary, hair dressers, teachers or any other job that does not require

them to be pretty because men will be there.

Summarization on article #3

A sexual favour is any sexual act occurring in an employee-employer or a student-teacher

relationship, in exchanged for privileged treatment in a workplace or school environment.

An intellectual seducer is a person who uses his/her knowledge and skills to gain access to

students’ information about them for sexual purposes. They use their knowledge about the

student’s past sexual experiences or impress them in order to harass and seduce them. Another

way is giving a person what they really “want” for sexual bribery.
Sexual harassment according to the article is defined as “unwelcome sexual advancement or

conduct.” It may also be verbal or any sexual act that interfere with an individual’s work

performance. Furthermore, it includes quid pro quo (Latin word for “something for something”

or “this for that”) harassment or a hostile/offensive work environment.

Form of sexual harassment (according to Utah University’s affirmative Equal Opportunity).

1. Verbal harassment

2. Non-verbal harassment

3. Physical harassment

Quid pro quo harassments take place when someone with authority demands sexual favors in

exchange for work benefits or even keeping your job. It can be verbally or implied through

touching or fondling.

According to the article, employees have the right to work in an environment free of

discrimination, intimidation, insult or ridicule. Harassment can lead to negative effect on work

performance or give a hostile and intimidating work environment.

Also, it was said that person who harasses a man or woman may be of the same sex.

Third party sexual harassment is affected by the offensive unwelcome conduct of a harasser to

another.

ANALYSIS ON THE IMPACT TO THE EMERGENT TEACHER

Artifact #1
This first article impacts the teacher in that it causes the teacher to be sure of themselves and

comfortable in delivering whatever content they need to deliver to the class. It allows the teacher

to have better control over the class and better work and team relationship.

The school is the second most important socializing agent in a child’s life. Therefore the teacher

has the opportunity to help to mold and build a child’s self-esteem that is having a low esteem

problem.

Artifact #2

The author identifies the teacher as one of the “great woman”. We the emergent teachers maybe

impacted by expectations of our male students and those in society who might interpret this

article as a guide or a handbook to selecting or viewing women society. Boys might expect the

female emerging teachers to show them respect or treat them exceptional seeing that it was

implied that they are the superior species. The emergent teachers based on what was suggested in

this article might act out or play out the submissive role in the classroom and as such train or

teaches the girls to be submissive being.

It helps to prepare the emergent teacher for what is expected and that he/she can make a

difference where the gender bias in the classroom can be reduced so that girls and boys task are

the same.

Artifact #3

As an emerging teacher, we have to understand and be aware that the situation or cases of sexual

harassment does not only or always take place in the workplace but also prevalent at schools. As

inspiring teachers, having understanding and being knowledgeable will help us know how to
response to the incident. Sexual harassment is a serious problem for students at all educational

levels. Students in elementary and secondary schools, as well as vocational schools,

apprenticeship programs, colleges and universities can be victims of sexual harassment. This

problem is common because many students are scared or too embarrassed to report sexual

harassment. Sexual harassment can be requests for sexual favors or unwelcome sexual behavior

that is bad often enough, individuals in this situation feel uncomfortable, scared or confused

which leads to interferences with their schoolwork and their ability to participate in school

activities or attend classes.

Sexual harassment does not only occur between teachers to student but between student to

student. Peer harassment involves; boys harassing girls and vice versa, boys harassing boys and

girls harassing girls. Because it is done quietly and is embarrassing to discuss, it is not always

notice or brought to the attention of school authorities. Students are children, even if they may

appear to have physical maturity. As such, they are entitled to enjoy their school years in an

environment where they can feel safe. As teachers, we need to educate our students to keep

them protected from harm and to ensure that their dignity will be assured at all times.
