Problem of Diversity

Today many of diversity workforce used in organization as a potential to


enhance organizational performance. The using of diversity in organizational
used to know many experience in many people with diferent personality,
national, behavior, attitude and so on. The experience from many people can
produce many of idea to accomplish the purpose in the organization.
Although, the diversity have advantages, but there also have disadvantaged.
The problem of diversity also can happen in organizations.
Discrimination
As human, people tend to fear others who are diferent from themselves, the
problem isnt that we fear the people but rather the diference such as the
religion, behavior beliefs or manner of working. !imply because it is unknown
or dissimilar, others tend to treat the diference as une"ual and discriminate
against it. Discrimination is more likely to occur when there is an increased
diversity of people. The type of discrimination will depend the culture of the
workplace like the norms, values and attitude of organizational members.
#esides that, when people are discriminated against they feel less secure at
work and their motivation, satisfaction, commitment, loyalty, productivity
and even feelings of self$esteem decrease. %t is the companys responsibility
to implement diversity awareness and training , such as through poster,
seminars and reprimand
&ommunication
'ith a variety of diverse individuals comes a variety of verbal and non$verbal
behavior. This can cause communication problem in the workplace and be
extremely frustrating for all involved especially if people fail to understand
the diferences is by looking at a frame work for dimension of national
culture.

&ertain individuals communicate and behave diferently, according to their
national culture. The way they threat others, their expectation of self and
others and their perceived status all impact on how power is distributed and
exhibited within organization. )or example, men may think they have more
power than women because they view women as the weaker gender. This
may particularly be the case with men from the *iddle +ast as women are
largely controlled by men in such societies. Therefore, men may have
di,culty adopting new behavior when working with woman in the workforce
on the other hand, gender may not be the issue. -owever, the perception of
.weak/ is only a perception and management should monitor any
inappropriate power plays to ensure that employees are not unfairly treated.

As with communication problems, the more diverse individuals who are
employed the more con0ict is inevitable. This is simply because people do
not understand why others think, act or behave a certain way and the
manner in which this is conducted is probably diferent from what we expect
or understand.
&ontrol
1ne of the most di,cult factors in employing a diverse workforce is that it
needs to be controlled . %nefective control which allows mechanisms such as
discrimination, communication, power plays and con0ict to arise can have
signi2cant negative conse"uence on individuals, groups and the organization
as these factors foster negativity and in time decreased performance. %t is
imperative that management adopt diversity initiatives to teach all
stakeholders including clients and suppliers that it is a diversity$friendly
organization and that discrimination or negative behavior will not be
tolerated.
