Experience a positive for Panther football

PAULDING As Kyle Coleman steps
into his second season as head coach of
Paulding, he is feeling good about the
combination of experience and talent
coming into his camp.
One of the strong points Coleman likes in
building his team this year is four seniors
and an experienced junior on his lines,
offensively and defensively. The Panthers
have 39 players out for this years squad,
including nine seniors.
Four seniors, Bailey Combs, Lorenzo
Salinas, Dakota Valdez and Isaac Ludwig,
are expected to bring leadership experience
into driving the line. In addition, junior
Garrett Sitton has been a three-year starter.
Weve got a lot of guys coming back
upfront. The main thing is keeping them
healthy, said Coleman. If we stay at
full health, our lines are going to be very
strong.
In the backfield, Coleman likes the good
mix of skilled experience and talent to move
the ball.
I feel like we have a good array of talent
to do what we need to, not just one or two
guys, Coleman said. We will run the ball
when we can, but weve also got talent
outside that will enable us to open the game
up when we need to.
Weve got some people that can go
to the outside to help us keep people
honest, continued Coleman. Well let
circumstances dictate what we have to do to
put people in the best situation.
Preston Ingol, a sophomore, has matured
and will be one of the go-to guys at taking
the ball down the field. Ingol gained

Defensively, Coleman goes back to the
health factor. With a large number of players
going both ways, strength and tolerance are
going to be key factors.
We have a lot of guys playing both
ways, observed Coleman. With a couple
of younger guys coming back, I feel that
both lines, offensive and defensive can be
good up front. We have some linebackers
experience his freshman year but has gained
strength over the year.
At the quarterback slot, Zach Baughman
is expected to call the signals while Corbin
Edwards will be one of his go-to individuals
along the sidelines as a wide receiver.
The biggest thing we need to work on
is to be more consistent, said Coleman.
Weve had our good times and bad times.
Thats something were talking about a lot
in camp so far.

and a little bit of depth on the outside.
One of Colemans biggest challenges
is building depth for the team. With 30
underclassmen as a plus, the coach believes
that depth charts will improve early in the
season.
Were trying to build depth. We have a
lot of young players, Coleman said. The
main thing is getting the freshmen to adjust
to varsity ball. Its quite a change going
from junior high ball straight to varsity.
They dont have a freshmen team to help
them to adjust. They have to learn how we
play and how we practice.
The freshmen and sophomores have
good numbers. The sophomore class is
extremely talented, continued Coleman.
As for the special teams, Coleman said
that decisions are still being made.
Weve got a couple of guys that do a nice
job kicking, but were still in preseason,
stressed Coleman. We have some good
experienced snappers. We have a number of
good athletes that can help out in this area.
One thing Coleman is certain of, it is
going to be a solid year in the Northwest
Conference.
The coach likes Crestview, last years
conference champion, with lots of returning
talent as a major factor in league play.
Delphos Jefferson has 60 players out
for their team and they have lots of talent,
observed Coleman. Youve got to put them
near the top.
But there are a lot of teams that are going
to be just plain solid, Bluffton, Ada, Allen
East , Spencerville and Columbus Grove all
have talent that is going to make them good
programs. The whole conference is tough
this year. This is going to be a year that is
really good for the Northwest Conference,
noted Coleman.

Scrappiness to characterize Panther VB style

PAULDING With the return of four
letterwinners and lots of hard work, first-
year head coach Hailey Phillips is looking
for scrappiness to cause problems for
opposing teams trying to drop the ball
between Paulding players this fall.
Were very scrappy; we have a lot of
girls working hard going for the ball, said
Phillips. Our kids have a lot of hustle.
We also have good blocking and hitting
potential, said Phillips. Were still working
to become more consistent. Once we can do
that, were going to be strong at the net.
Phillips comes to Paulding as graduate
of Bluffton University, where she played
on the schools volleyball team all during
her education. Prior to that, she had been a
volleyball star at Patrick Henry High School.
Initially, she will be looking to four seniors
to bring leadership to the floor.
Suzanne Reinhart, a defensive specialist,
has worked hard during the summer to
strengthen the game. In addition, she serves
well and has a good passing game. Brooke
Combs will attack as the right side hitter.
Phillips also likes her ability as an outside
hitter, but is going with the right side attack
to start the season.
Morgan Riley will serve as the teams
libero.
She has deepened her defensive game
in the back row. Shes very consistent; she
works hard at getting the ball up, said
Phillips.
The teams other senior, Malayna
VanCleve, is a 5-foot-7 middle hitter, based
on her jumping ability. However, with her
strong blocking ability, Phillips is going to
open with putting her on the right side. She
is the teams only left-handed player.
From the junior class, Jaycie Varner will
go on the court as an outside hitter, primarily,
but she is expected to also play all the way
around.
She has solid defense and hitting,
commented Phillips. She adjusts well and
still can put the ball over.
Kristen Schilt will serve as one of the
teams setters. She has a good hands on

game and is a specialist at quick attacks.
Although Sam Meggison is listed as a middle
hitter, Phillips is utilizing her from the
outside and as a right side hitter. She will be
seeing action on both the varsity and junior
varsity teams.
Caylor March is also talented, especially as
an effective server. Phillips especially likes
Marchs developing hard swing.
Classmate Faith Vogel is another player
skilled at making quick attacks.
She has improved a lot from that angle,
said Phillips. She is very efficient for us.
Four of the players are letterwinners:
Varner, Vogel, Combs and Riley. Phillips
likes it that 29 girls are out for the total high
school program.
Some of the challenges the squad is
currently working on include communication
and serve receives, noted Phillips.
We are struggling with serve receives.
We need to focus on getting the ball back
quicker and stopping them from running up
points when they are serving, said Phillips.

PAULDING Sophomores Simeon
Shepherd and Dayton Pracht and junior
Lucas Arend are expected to be the strong
threesome that will be the core of strength in
the Paulding boys cross country team this fall.
Second-year coach Hayden Krick likes the
way his sophomore duo has been working
hard all summer.
Theyve put in lots of miles this summer.
Im looking for good things from them, said
Krick. Junior Lucas Arend ended as my
number two runner last year. Between the
three of them, Im looking for some great
speed.
Im very confident in Lucas ability,
continued Krick. He ran the 400 in track.
Hes got good speed. He was running in the
18s at the end of last year. He looks like a
runner. He looks like hes running the 200.
One challenge facing the boys team at the
beginning of the year is the loss of several key
seniors from last years team to graduation.
For that reason, Arend is his most experienced
runner.
Thankfully, the Panthers have some
incoming freshmen that were good runners in
JV last year. That includes Michael Kohart,
the teams number two runner, and Corbin
Kohart, also a strong runner.
Shawn Jackson also ran well. These

young runners got us a second place finish
in the junior high conference meet last year.
Im expecting strong things from them, said
Krick.
In addition, Krick has recruited a strong
track runner, Michael Wood, to join the cross
country team.
I convinced him to come out for cross
country. Once he realizes that cross country
is just a little longer, hes going to be okay,
observed Krick.
For the girls, Krick will be building around
a strong senior trio, Shayla Shepherd, Melissa
Martinez and Brooke Clemens.
Shayla and Melissa had a great track
season, said Krick. They ran a lot this
summer.
Clemens has moved back to Paulding after
having moved away a couple of years ago.
I dont know what to expect from her
now, but I know that she is a strong runner
and ran hard this summer, Krick said. She
could have post-season potential for us.
One junior is out for this years Panther
harriers. Emilee Ringler has come out after
suffering a lot of knee pain last year in sports
action.
Last year, she had a lot of knee pain. She
was a good 800 runner in track. She got in
a lot of good mileage in the summer. Were
looking to her to bring strength to the fourth
runner position.
Two sophomores, Joellyn Salinas and
Caylin Johanns, round out the squad.
Salinas was mainly a field specialist in
track, although she served as a relay alternate
at times. Johanns also brings field experience
from track, but because of their conditioning,
Kricks expectations of their ability to
contribute to the team are high.
In girls cross country, Krick looks for
Spencerville to especially be strong.

New rule could shorten football games

During the off season, several rule
changes often take place that effect sports
play. For the sports fan, most often, these
changes are unnoticed or have little
to do with the actual play of the game.
However, one rule that will possibly
change the second half of a football game
and shorten its playing time will take
place when the season gets underway.
In the past, high school football games
in Ohio would be shortened when agreed
upon by both head coaches when the
score would have a margin of thirty
points or more. That will no longer be the
case when the 2014 season kicks off. The
adoption of what is called the football
point differential rule was approved
by the Ohio High School Athletic
Association (OHSAA) board of directors
in early May
Used in many states, the point
differential regulation, or more commonly
called the mercy rule will be carried out as
follows: after the first half of play, anytime
the score differential reaches 30 points or
more. The following changes will be made
regarding rules determining when the
clock will be stopped.
The clock will stop when:
An officials time out is called either
for an injured player or following a change
of possession.
A charged time out is called.
At the end of the period.
A score occurs.
The clock will start again on the ready
for play signal for the first play after the
above situations. The clock will continue
to run in all other situations. If at anytime
the score drops below a 30 point difference
the clock reverts to regular timing.
New look for Wayne Trace

HAVILAND After graduating 11 seniors
from last years state runner-up squad, the
Wayne Trace football program takes on a
new look in 2014 with 15 seniors looking to
lead this years version of the Raiders.
The red, white and blue went all the way
to the state championship game last season
before falling to Kirtland behind a stellar
offense and a stingy defense.
While duplicating the success will be very
difficult for this years team, head coach Bill
Speller is optimistic about further success
with this years roster still containing several
quality athletes.
Obviously, we lost a lot from last year,
commented the Raider head coach. But we
still have a lot of talent and we are looking
forward to the season. The guys have worked
very hard and we believe we can still be very
competitive.
The Raiders have had to work through
some adversity though.
Wayne Trace has lost the services of a pair
of seniors in Jake Arend and Matt Baxter
due to injuries, creating some depth issues.
Arend and Baxter are both expected to miss
the season.
The injuries have forced us to change

some roles, continued the Raider mentor.
But one positive out of that is the fact that
it gives some younger kids an opportunity to
step up and fill those roles. One key for us is
going to be staying healthy and to develop
some of those younger players.
On the defensive side, Wayne Trace will
again use varying defenses, most likely
playing a 4-4 or 5-3 base but will also mix in
some 3-5.
We arent looking to change our defense
but we will mix it up this year, noted the
Raider head coach. In the middle, we are
going to be big and weve also got some
athletes that will be able to make plays for us.

Senior Riley Moore (6-4, 280) is expected
to be the nose guard with the senior duo of
Hank Sinn (6-3, 230) and Chuckie Chastain
(6-3, 315) handling the defensive tackle
position.
Junior Connor Arend (6-0, 190) and senior
Daron Showalter (6-1, 205) are expected to
be the defensive ends.
The middle of the defense will feature junior
Noah Stoller (6-0, 215), senior Tyler Showalter
(5-10, 165) and junior Cole Shepherd (6-2,
175) as the linebackers while junior Jake
Baksa (5-8, 170) will be the free safety.

in tackles with 129 tackles, including 46
unassisted and 13 tackles for a loss.
Senior Jake Dingus (6-0, 170) and senior
David Sinn (6-6, 195) are the probable
cornerbacks. Sophomore Seth Saylor (6-1,
150) also will see time in the defensive
backfield.
Offensively, Wayne Trace will have a
different look from an offense that scored
over 48 points a contest.
Dingus will take over the role of
quarterback due to the injury to Arend.
We may not throw the ball quite as much
as Jake is a good runner, Speller added.
He has gotten more reps recently with the
changes and has become more and more
comfortable in that role and will just continue
to get better for us.
Daron Showalter will be the featured
running back while Shepherd and David
Sinn are the probable split ends. In the slots,
Tyler Showalter and Saylor are the expected
starters.
Our offense is going to different but we
still think we will be able to score points,
continued Speller. Weve got a lot of athletes
in some key spots.
Up front, junior Justin Speice (6-4, 260)
and Hank Sinn are both expected to see time
at the center position with senior Justin Pierce
(5-9, 235) and Chastain getting playing time
at the guard positions.
Junior Scott Wenninger (6-2, 205) and
Stoller will be the tackles.
I think we still have an opportunity to
be very good, Speller commented. Weve
got some good athletes but we have to stay
healthy and avoid the injury bug.
Sophomores Caleb Schultz (5-9, 160) and
Jayden Sherry (5-7, 135) are expected to
battle for playing time at the varsity level as
well.
Our depth is being tested and that is where
we have to have role players step up, stated
Speller.
The Raider schedule will bring three tough
non-league challenges before starting Green
Meadows Conference action.
Wayne Trace opens the year with the
annual rivalry game against Paulding before
visiting Otsego and Crestview in a pair of key
playoff-point games.
Inside the league, traditionally tough Tinora
will provide a big challenge while Speller also
feels Hicksville and Ayersville will also be
very competitive.
Our schedule has some tough games on it
again this year, concluded the Raider head
coach. With two big rivalry games against
Paulding and Crestview in the non-league
portion and a road trip to Otsego in there,
there will be a lot of playoff points at stake.
Then we get into league with teams like
Tinora, Hicksville and Ayersville. It will be
a very challenging schedule for us.

Trio looks to help raise bar for WT

HAVILAND After posting 15 victories
a year ago, the Wayne Trace Lady Raider
volleyball team looks to raise the bar in
the 2014 season led by a trio of returning
seniors.
Addison Baumle, Sarah Young and Gina
Sinn all come back from that squad for third
year head coach Angie Speice and the Lady
Raiders look to build on last years success.
Baumle, a third year varsity player, will
be an outside hitter and defensive specialist
for Wayne Trace. The senior recorded 77
kills while adding 75 digs and 15 aces last
season for the red, white and blue.
Young comes back as a middle hitter
following a season that saw her post 107
kills, 35 digs and a dozen aces.
Meanwhile, Sinn finished second on the
squad with 272 digs as a defensive specialist
for Wayne Trace last season. The senior also
recorded 20 kills for Wayne Trace.
I have been very pleased with what we
have shown so far, noted Speice. We
have an athletic group of girls and they
have worked very hard so far. They have
done a pretty good job to this point in being
aggressive even though we have been trying
some new positions.
The Raider roster also includes four other
seniors seeing action at the varsity level for
the first time.
Defensive specialist Mackenzie Swary,
outside hitter/defensive specialist Haley
Saylor, setter Blair Baumle and outside
hitter/defensive specialist Carrigan Critten
all will look to find their roles at the varsity
level.
The seniors as a group have done a very
good job in leading the team, added the
Raider head coach. They arent so much
the vocal style leaders but they lead by
example.
Three juniors also will vie for playing time
in setter/outside hitter Stacy Flint, defensive
specialist Sydney Critten and outside hitter/
middle hitter Erin Mohr.
Sophomore outside hitter/middle hitter
Danae Myers is expected to get time at the
varsity level as well.

One of the concerns is our overall lack of
experience at the varsity level, continued
Speice. We have to learn how to play at this
level. The new girls did enjoy some success
at the junior varsity level last season so they
know how to win but they have to be able to
adapt when it comes to varsity.
Speice is hopeful that the Raiders overall
athleticism is something that helps Wayne
Trace be very competitive.
All of the girls are athletic and overall
our quickness will be better than last year,
commented the third-year head coach. This
is a smart and very athletic group of girls.
Weve got a versatile group of kids and
we have changed up the way we do a few
things this year, concluded Speice. They
have adapted pretty well and they get along
pretty good together. Learning new roles
and developing that chemistry will be a key
for us. We are looking forward to the season
and we feel we can be very competitive this
year. I think once we get some experience
that this team could be very fun to watch.

HAVILAND The Wayne Trace cross
country program will be faced with several
challenges in the 2014 season as the Raiders
are short on numbers and will feature a lot
of youth.
The Raider boys squad has no seniors,
juniors or freshmen on the roster but will
field a full team with six sophomores
making up the roster.
Head coach Annette Sinn knows the youth
will make things interesting, especially with
no senior leadership due to the graduation
loss of Brandon Zartman, Logan Fast and
Arlen Stoller.
We are interested in seeing how all of the
sophomore boys will do this year since they
are young, stated Sinn. We lost Brandon,
Logan and Arlen to graduation so we have
no senior leadership.
Filling out the Raider roster are
Tanner Cook, Chance Elliott, Ruger
Goeltzenleuchter, Kolyn Hilkey, Levi Priest
and Chandler Thompson.
On the girls side, the Lady Raiders
are even shorter on numbers as the red,
white and blue roster includes no seniors,
sophomores or freshmen.

We are disappointed that we dont have
a girls team but the girls have worked hard
and are running strong, continued Sinn.
With the lack of numbers on both squads,
Sinn feels the Raiders will need to work
with athletes on an individual basis as much
as the team basis.
Generally, we hope to take each
individual athlete as far as we can,
concluded the Raider mentor. We have to
try and get the most gains possible.
The Lady Raider junior high team consists
of two members as well in Gracie Laukhuf
and Mady Laukhuf.
Jaeden Jimenez is the only junior high
boy out for the Raider squad.

HAVILAND Wayne Traces boys and
girls golf teams both enter the 2014 campaign
looking for success as the two squads face
different challenges.
On the boys side, the Raiders bring
back several players from last year and the
expectation level will be high for head coach
Chris Rosswurms squad.
Rosswurm, who is entering his sixth
season at the helm of the program and was a
state golf participant back in 1986, has high
expectations for his Wayne Trace squad as
the Raiders feature depth and good balance
entering the upcoming campaign.
Despite having only one senior, the red,
white and blue have four juniors and six
sophomores on the roster with several players
capable of playing at the varsity level this
year.
Senior Corbin Linder will be counted on
for some key leadership as well as being one
of the top players for Rosswurm this year.
Juniors Alec Vest, Luke Miller, Quinten
Miller and Austin Fast also are looking to
battle for playing time at the varsity level
according to the Raider head coach.
The biggest thing with this team is we
will have a lot of depth, noted Rosswurm,
who again is assisted by Jeremy Daeger. We
dont have that number one player who will

be at the top every time but we have a good
group of kids that are capable of being that
number one player on any given day.
Five sophomores also are expected to be in
the battle for time at the top level.
Brady Stabler, Christopher Davis, Evan
Baughman, Ethan Crates and Ethan Dunham
hope to be in the mix in their second year of
high school golf.
Freshmen Owen Denny and Jordon Offerle
also look to garner some key playing time as
well.
One of the big things for us will be just
improving from day to day, continued
Rosswurm. Learning how to handle the ups
and downs of a round and not let a bad hole
carry over to the next hole is a big part of
golf.
A schedule that features only three home
matches also will be challenging according
to the Raider coach.
Sometimes having a lot of away matches
is a good thing, Rosswurm added. It forces
you to make adjustments to each individual
course instead of getting too familiar
with your home course. Our guys will be
challenged with this schedule and it will
prepare us for the conference tournament and
postseason play.
Taking that one shot approach and being
mentally tough is always a key in golf,
noted the Raider mentor. Weve got several
kids who have had some good experience at
the varsity level and they need to come in
and do the little things to make themselves
and the team successful. As the year goes,
we look to build and continue to improve as
a team in order to peak at the right time of the
year.
In the league, the Raider head coach feels
several teams could be amongst the front-
runners.
Hicksville and Tinora both should be very
competitive, commented Rosswurm. The
league will be very, very competitive this
year as several teams bring back some good
kids.
Lady Raider golf
The Lady Raiders also bring back a key
player but the roster will include four girls
who have never played at the varsity level as
well.
Veteran head coach Al Welch, who is
entering his 17th season, brings back senior
Paige Rahrig, who qualified for districts a
year ago and averaged a 46 on the season.
Paige was a district qualifier last year
and she comes back as the only experienced
player we have this year, noted Welch. She
is going to have to be a good leader for us and
we will need her to play to her capabilities.
Rahrig, who has participated in tournaments
throughout the summer, has the potential
to have a very successful season according
to Welch. She has worked very hard this
summer, noted the Raider head coach.
She took part in the Lima Junior program
all summer and has played a lot of golf. I
feel like she can be one of the top players in
our area if she continues to work hard and
get better.
Joining Rahrig is four freshmen who
will be experiencing varsity golf for the
first time. Gracie Gudakunst, Brooke Sinn,
Haley Dempsey and Jilly Wiseman all
hit the course this year and the group has
shown potential according to the Raider
head coach.

They have some potential and I think
they will get better every week, noted
the Raider mentor. A lot will depend on
how they handle situations. Getting better
at the little things is a key for them and
that just comes from playing the game and
practicing.
Golf is a funny game, commented the
veteran head coach. You can play well for
part of a round but then have a bad hole that
really hurts you. If you dont handle the
adversity, it can lead to more bad holes and
then the round gets away from you. That
is one area that we have to do a good job
handling the adversity and it is something
they have to learn as the year progresses.
Its a tough game to learn at this level but
n WT GOLF
our girls are going to have to do that.
Wayne Trace also faces a challenging
schedule that includes five home matches
on the year. Our schedule will provide an
opportunity for the girls to play on some
different courses this year, added Welch.
Because of that, they will have to learn
to make adjustments as they go which will
help to prepare them for the conference
tournament as well as the sectional
tournament. Weve also got some home
matches where we should be a little more
comfortable so it is a good mix.
As far as the Green Meadows Conference,
the veteran head coach feels Tinora is
always one of the league favorites while
Ayersville should be a challenger as well.

Archers playing for more than pride on Fridays

ANTWERP For the Antwerp Archer
football team, this year could easily be one
of those seasons when the team simply goes
through the motions and what happens will
happen. After all, this team, and especially
the younger team members, know they will
not field a varsity team in 2015 due to low
numbers. It was announced several months
ago by school officials that Antwerp would
not play football for one season.
However, with the dilemma head coach
Drew Altimus and his staff are facing, they
are excited about having 18 kids out for this
season and the hard work they are putting
forth to make the best of the situation.
Archer pride in Antwerp is something that
cant be taken away and the football team
will prove their loyalty each Friday night.
It is tough. But, the kids are working hard,
practice has been fun and we are working
towards being the best team we can be and
I am proud of their effort, said the 18 year
veteran coach.
In the last two seasons the Archers are

horses in the back field, said Altimus.
Another junior, Justice Clark, saw plenty
of playing time last season and will be
on the field for most of the evening each
Friday. The 5-foot-5 speedster is described
as the coach on the field according to
Altimus.
Trenton Copsey, a three-year letter
winner, stands at 6-foot-4 and will be one of
1-20 but Altimus has 10 returning lettermen
including Green Meadows Conference
honorable mention from a year ago in Jarett
Bute. The senior, a 237 pound defensive
end, has lettered three years for the blue and
white and will lead the Archers. Jarett is
our leader. He is vocal and has been through
this before and we expect him to have a
good year, said Altimus.
Fullback Nick Barnhouse had several
bright spots running the ball last campaign
and Coach Altimus feels his junior runner
will not disappoint this time.

the targets for quarterback Josh Poulson.
Copsey has been working hard in practice
and is head and shoulders above where he was
at this time last year. If he will stay focused
on the game, Trenton could have a solid year
on the gridiron, commented Altimus.
Poulson, only a freshman, stands 5-foot-9
and will be the Archer signal caller, replacing
graduated Derek Smalley.
Josh (Poulson) is a freshman and he will
take his lumps along the way but he has a
great football IQ and he wants to work on his
game and keep getting better and as a coach I
can certainly live with that, said Altimus.
Junior Carlos Sanchez, one of the
Archers defensive specialists last year who
had a knack for getting to the opponents
quarterback, will be looked upon to continue
to feast in the opponents backfield.
Carlos should have a good year. He is
what I call an offseason workaholic, the
head coach said.
Two additions to this years Archer team is
senior Jacob Patterson, who sat out last year,
and Alex Vail, who missed all of last season
due to an injury. Its great having those two.
They will certainly help the program and I
believe they are anxious to get on the field
and compete.
Other letterwinners returning include Trey
Mills, Mike Taylor and Jordan Laker. These
are all great kids with great personalities
and they will all make contributions to this
Archer team, Altimus said.
Rounding out the roster for the blue and
white are Willie Jones, senior; Logan Shaner,
sophomore; Owen Miller, freshman; Caleb
Cline, freshman; Austin Wendt, sophomore;
Houston Mansfield, sophomore; and
freshman Ryan Kitchen.
These 18 guys are the core and they play
football because they love the game. Each
day in practice they put forth the effort and
I have been very pleased with their effort
and everything the coaching staff has asked
them to do. In spite of the low numbers the
Antwerp community should be very proud
of these young men and come out and watch
them play, Altimus concluded.

ANTWERP Last season the Lady Archer
volleyball team entered the season with high
hopes of improving on their 14-10 record
from the previous year. Unfortunately,
the blue and white managed just five wins
while dropping 17. In the Green Meadows
Conference they finished in sixth place at
2-5.
Head Coach Amy Hammer is looking at
a solid group of returning players who have
an additional year of experience and hopes
of cashing in on better results in 2014.
Seven players return including second
team All-GMC Emily Hamman and GMC
honorable mention Emily Derck. Hamman
returns for her senior season while Derck is
a junior.
Hamman is a four-year starter and will
be looked at as one of our leaders, said
coach Hammer.
The other returning senior is Gabby
Zuber, who is a strong hitter according to
Hammer.
Last year we were incredibly young
Seven Archers return for optimistic season
and we had to learn from our mistakes, but
this year we will be more competitive with
having a year of experience. I think we will
be stronger and quicker to the ball, she
said.
Returning from the junior class along
with Derck are Audrie Longardner, Avery
Braaten and Kiana Recker.
Both Longardner and Braaten will be
our strong, quick defensive players who will
play the back row with Recker playing the
front net, said Hammer.
Joining the junior duo in the back row
will be a trio of junior team mates in Beth
Hawley, Sidney Barnhouse, Mikayla Boesch
as well as senior Mari Flint.
Playing up front will be sophomore
Sydney Sheedy and freshman Rachel
Williamson. Again, they are a couple of
strong hitters and we will utilize them on
the front row along with Hamman, Derck,
Recker and Zuber, Hammer said.
The setters for the blue and white will be
sophomore Peyton Short and Derck filling
in on occasion.
We have a strong core returning from
last year and we have some young kids who
have little experience. But, over the summer
the girls developed a good team chemistry,
said Hammer.
Joining Hammer on her coaching staff are
Heather Barnhouse and Brittni George.
Antwerp opens its season with three
home matches before going on the road.
The Archers host the county matches with
Paulding and Wayne Trace on Saturday,
Sept. 6.

ANTWERP When you think of long
distance runners at Antwerp, as of late, you
think of Sam Williamson. This year, the
junior will wear the blue and white and will
lead the boys cross country team to what head
coach Cord Ehrhart believes will be a very
competitive team.
Williamson brings from last season some
lofty credentials, including a Green Meadows
Conference title, a second place finish at the
Tiffin regional, followed by a top 10 showing
at the state meet.
Specifically, Williamson ran second at the
regional with a time of 16:20.54, just 0.69
seconds behind the first place finisher. The
following week at the state meet, Williamson
was clocked at 16:25.09 for 10th position.
He had the second best time among the
sophomore class.
Joining Williamson will be returning
regional qualifier Erik Buchan. Erik, who ran
cross country for the first time last season, was
a pleasant surprise for the Archers. Buchan
finished in the 72 spot with a time of 17:57.26.
This year we have a strong core of runners
with Williamson and Buchan as well as some
Boys XC team led by Williamson, Buchan
With full team, Archer girls expected to be more competitive
quality returning letter winners, said coach
Ehrhart.
Those returning include Matt Dooley,
Chase Gerken, Jerett Godeke, Justice Harvey
and Evan Hilton.
The head mentor is looking to what he
describes as four promising newcomers
who can help fill the void. First-time runners
include Jeffrey Coleman (also playing golf),
Drake Gerken, Brian Geyer and Brandon
Laney.
Once these guys get some experience
running in the high school setting, they should
really help us out, Ehrhart said.
Last year the Archers finished fifth in the
GMC meet, just two points behind fourth-
place Hicksville.
This year I look for the boys to place
high at most of the invites we compete at.
Hopefully we will have a good tournament
run if they stay healthy, Ehrhart said.
Other members of the team include Colton
Bennett, Josh Ehlinger, Aaron ODonnell,
Josh Steiner and Parker Swenson.
Girls Cross Country
The Antwerp girls cross country team
will have eight participants this year, which
is up from previous years. With the added
numbers, the girls can compete in meets as a
team. The top five finishers are scored with
a point award for the position the finish.
For example, a runner finishing third would
receive three points toward their team score.
In cross country, the lowest score wins. Last
year, the Lady Archers had just four runners.
We not only have more girls running but
we have some quality athletes. I believe this
group of girls will be able to run as a pack
and this is something weve not have for a few
years, said Coach Ehrhart.
Letterwinners returning for the 2014
season include Rachel Becker, Sam Provines,
Maggie Reinhart and Bailee Sigman. The
four promising newcomers include Brooke
Hatlevig, Annie Miesle, Callie Perry and
Olivia Tempel.
The four newcomers most likely will be
among the top seven on our squad, but they
need to get some race experience early in the
season, commented the coach.
Not having a full team last year, the Lady
Archers did not contend for the GMC, but this
time around Coach Ehrhart is optimistic his
team can finish in the top half of their invites
while competing well in the GMC.

Antwerp boys, girls golf much improved

ANTWERP The Antwerp boys golf
team opened its season earlier this month
with a nine-man roster. Veteran coach Jon
Short enters his 15th year as coach and will
have four seniors, three juniors and two
freshmen making up his squad.
Leading contender for the top spot on the
team is Jeffrey Coleman, who was GMC
honorable mention as a freshman while
gaining all conference recognition last year
as a sophomore. Coleman is also running
cross country this year for head coach Cord
Ehrhart.
Jeff is our leader. He is averaging 41
in the early matches. He had a 39 and then
followed it up with an 82, Coach Short
said.
Senior Jasper Godeke, a letter winner
as a junior, returns as does junior Iann
Roebel, who also lettered. Senior Parker
Swenson, also running cross country, gained
experienced on the links last season and is
back for the 2014 campaign.
Jacob ODonnell and Collin Perry, both
seniors, are playing golf for the first time.
We want the guys to have a fun time
learning this game. Its not about winning,
but hopefully a kid can show some interest,
we may find them some clubs and hopefully
they will learn and enjoy a game they can
play for years, said Short.
The only other returning golfer is junior
Drake Neace, who played his first season
of golf last year. Rounding out the team are
freshmen Noah Cline and Zeb Getrost.
Obviously we are in a rebuilding year,
but we still have a group of guys that all
have potential and its going to be fun
watching them improve during the season,
Short said.
The Archers lost by way of graduation
GMC honorable mention Erik Miesle along
with Kyle Recker, Brock Taylor, Justin
Langham and Austin VanAtta. In the GMC
tournament last season, the blue and white
finished sixth.
Lady Archer Golf
After leaving the head coaching ranks as
the Antwerp Archer boys basketball coach
a season ago, Scott McMichael is back, this
time as head coach of the Lady Archer golf
team. McMichael replaces Phil Rangel, who
moved away from the district.
Ive never coached golf, but I played in
high school and enjoy the sport very much.
I look forward to the opportunity. I believe
this team has the potential to get better as the
season progresses. They are a great group
and they have an eagerness to improve,
said McMichael.
McMichael welcomes back four
letterwinners including freshman Emilee
Phillips, junior Jenna Wilson, sophomore
Maggie Wilson and junior Sierra Cline.
Joining the four returning linksters will be
two freshmen, Amanda Roberts and Katelyn
Clevenger, sophomore Ashley Bowers and
junior Brooke Gerig.
These eight girls have done a great job
in getting prepared for the season. They
are quality kids who listen well and take
advice in order to improve their game.
Its a pleasure to work with them, said
McMichael.
Holding down the number one spot for the
team is Phillips, who earned second team
All-GMC last season. In the early-season
Lincolnview Invitational, Phillips managed
a 95 for fifth place.
Right now she our number one golfer.
She has the potential to get much better if
she works hard, said the head mentor.
Number two on the Lady Archer depth
chart is Jenna Wilson. Wilson was selected
GMC honorable mention last season. She
is shooting in the 50s and with a little work
I believe she can be in the 40s as the season
moves forward, McMichael said.
Maggie Wilson, younger sister of Jenna,
is number three for the Lady Archers and
McMichael sees Maggie getting much
better.
She also is hitting in the 50s and can
lower her scores to the 40s. Her putting
around the greens has been very good in
recent matches, commented the head
coach.
Junior Sierra Cline currently holds down
the fourth position and is shooting in the
60s. She is somewhat new to the game but
she is working hard and improving, said
McMichael.
Freshman Amanda Roberts is hitting in
the mid 60s, according the head coach. She
is another golfer with great potential. She
hits the ball well off the tee and is working
to improve her putting, commented
McMichael.
Another freshman, Katelyn Clevenger, is
new to the game and is learning the basics

and hopefully will continue to learn and
improve her game. Ashley Bowers just
joined the team and is just beginning to
work into the teams routine. Bowers was
a member of the Lady Archers team last
season.
Rounding out the girls squad is Brooke
Gerig, a junior, who moved in from
Woodburn. Gerig played for Woodlan
High School in Indiana last season. Gerig
has completed the necessary paperwork
to become eligible and after getting in the
necessary practices, Coach McMichael feels
the Hoosier transplant will battle for one of
the top spots.
She is a very nice golfer with a nice
swing and is a good putter. Having Brooke
as an addition to this team will certainly
make us a contender for the GMC, said
McMichael.
Last year, the Lady Archers finished
second behind Hicksville in the conference
match. Graduated from last years Archer
team is first team All-GMC Savannah
Fettig.
