Background
The medicines ordering process is designed with more than one goal. Some of these goals are
outlined below:
To ensure timely delivery of cancer medicines
To contribute to quality of treatment of cancer patients, by enabling consultation between
the NCTC and the referring/treating doctor
To ensure security of the procured medicines in terms of correct ordering/minimisation of
medicines wastage/delivery of correct medicines to correct locations

The final responsibility for correct and timely ordering of medicines rests with the referring/treating
doctor. That doctor should initiate the below procedures, follow up on outstanding tasks, and
monitor the effectiveness of the procedure. If the doctor has concerns, they should address them
with the NCTC and then upward through the relevant corporate structure if necessary.
Feedback
I have delegated the duty of collating and reporting on change requests to the Cancer Medicines
Ordering Process to the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation (CFPNG). It should be clear that the
CFPNG has no authority over the public health system's medicines ordering process, they are simply
authorised to collate feedback on this process and deliver it to those with that authority. To that
end, if you have feedback on this ordering process, please email Amy Carland on
admin@cancerfoundation.org.pg or call on 7214 2816.

Processes
Process One - Doctor to Doctor Ordering
This is the preferred process for ordering cancer treatment medicines. The referring/treating doctor
should contact Dr John Niblett (Director/Radiation Oncologist, NCTC) to discuss the medicines
required on 7639 3409 or 472 6095 (ext 161). The requesting doctor should have on hand the details
of the patient and the planned regime. Dr Niblett will then action next steps to deliver medicines for
treatment.

In the case that Dr Niblett is not available, the requesting doctor should call the NCTC on 473 2121
and speak to the Registrar in attendance about their requirements.
Process Two - Fax Ordering
The requesting doctor prepares a fax that must include:
Clinical details of the patient (including planned treatment regime)
Mobile phone number of the requesting doctor

The requesting doctor must ensure that they remain contactable on their mobile phone to discuss
the medicines order.

The fax order should be sent to 472 3969. Any fax orders should be followed up using the above
contact details for doctor to doctor ordering.
Process Three - Pharmacy to Pharmacy Ordering
The requesting doctor should contact the pharmacy at PMGH (for instance, contact Winmary
Bariamu) and inform the pharmacy of the medicine name, dosage/strength and quanity required.
The PMGH pharmacy then contacts the pharmacy at Angau Hospital (Sebastian - 7318 2714) and
request delivery of the medicines.

Dr Niblett must approve any order that transacts via the pharmacy. The pharmacist in Lae must
contact Dr Niblett if the order appears unusual.
Contact List
Below is a list of contact details relevant to the cancer medicines ordering process. It is not
comprehensive, and it would be helpful for additional contacts to be added/circulated between
stakeholders (e.g. the PMGH pharmacy phone number). If you would like a phone number added to
this list please email Amy at the CFPNG on admin@cancerfoundation.org.pg
