The Piston Guide
- requires low maintenance
- is tted with a mechanical feedback unit and one-way restrictors,
- is supplied with stop valves as an option, that retain the Guide position in the
event of a pressure drop or pressure failure.
2.2 Functional description
The fabric guiding system consists of the following components:
- Pneumatic Piston Guide SR-694/696/697 or SR-994/996/997
- Control Valve SV-95.1-5 or SV-95-10 (used at the series SR-996 / SR 997) for
detecting and guiding the fabric edge position.
- Mechanical feedback unit.
The felt / wire Guide is pneumatic.
The Piston Guide consists of one or two pneumatic cylinders for performing the
adjusting movements and a guide unit (rolling guide by means of supporting rollers
for steel version or plastic sliding rails for stainless steel version) for accepting all
forces that do not act in the direction of the adjusting movement.
The Piston Guide can be installed in horizontal, inclined or vertical position, upright
or overhead hanging.
The Control Valve is a stepless pneumatic selector valve with a sensing unit. If
the fabric position changes, the sensor paddle, which controls the Control Valve,
is deected. Depending on the direction of deection, one cylinder chamber of
the correction device is pressurized and the other is vented. If the fabric position
is again corrected, the sensor paddle returns to the basic position (16 relative to
the vertical, valve closed).
Because of the pressure difference between the two chambers of the pneumatic
cylinder, the Guide moves and tilts the guiding roll. Tilting the guiding roll inuences
the cross-machine direction of the fabric, and this effect is used for guiding.
The valve in the control unit is opened more or less depending on the amount of
excursion. This means that the Guide corrects slowly for small excursions and
more quickly for larger excursions. As soon as the desired value matches the
actual value (fabric in desired position), the system has been properly regulated,
and the valve is closed.

5.2.2 Installation of Control Valve
These operating instructions describes the installation of the SV-95.1-5 Control
Valve. The procedure for installation of other types of Control Valves is described
in the operating instructions for these Control Valves.
In the zero point positioning of the Control Valve, the sensor paddle must be
oriented at an angle of 16 from vertical in order to be able to maintain continual
contact with the fabric edge and work smoothly in both directions.
1. Mount support stand SV-30 in the clamping block, secured to the cross prole
of the mechanical feedback unit. The support can be turned in any direction
by means of the clamping block (standard type).
2. Mount the Control Valve upright on the support stand SV-30 so that the air
connections are facing away from the machine.
Only a horizontally mounted Control Valve guarantees correct functio-
ning!
3. Push sensor paddle onto the camshaft. Do not tighten the fastening screw
yet.
4. Rotate the sensor paddle away from the fabric and insert the pin supplied into
the hole in the housing. Allow the sensor paddle to lie against the stop pin.
5. Rotate the control shaft making sure that the red mark of the guide disk is
aligned with the mark on the housing.
6. Hold the sensor paddle against the Stop and tighten the screw on the arm of
the sensor paddle.
7. Adjust the height of the sensor paddle so that it lies approx. in the center

5.3 Setting into Operation
1. Fill the service unit with oil.
- oil quality: heat-resistant, synthetic oil (clarify with your oil supplier),see
chapter 6.2
2. Set the air pressure to 5 - 6 bar.
3. Move the sensor paddle to one side, the correction device must move out
completely to one side.
Move the sensor paddle to the other side, the correction device must move
out completely to the other side.
4. Adjustment of Guide movement and mechanical feedback unit.
First determine the appropriate installation using the following overview.
Then check the correct movement of Piston Guide.
If the Guide does not move as specied when the sensor paddle is deected
in the direction of the arrow, the air lines between the Control Valve and Guide
must be interchanged.

Linking variant A Linking variant B
Check correct function of mechanical feedback unit. (The Guides are alrea-
dy set for the position in question; if installed according to plan, no changes
should be necessary.)
There are two possibilities available to link the threaded rod with the mechanical
feedback unit (A and B). The type may sometimes vary from the illustrated type.
The correct variant is determined by means of the overview on page 23. By
moving the sensor paddle in the direction of the arrow (away from the fabric)
the Guide should carry out a controlled movement in the direction of the ar-
row. The mechanical feedback unit is linked to the carriage and it's movement
should move the Control Valve away from the fabric edge.
Change of the linking variant can be carried out without difculty on site. In
this case it is required to remove the locknut from the feedback unit to insert
the thread rod into the opposite rotary arm and then retighten using the nut
(please use screw locking such as Loctite!).
The installation of the Control Valve and matching to the particular conditions
are quite universally adjustable and can be changed without difculty on site
(constricted with the stainless version).

Thus, for reasons of space, the mounting for the Control Valve (support SV-30)
can be shifted (evtl. inverted) from the inside of the machine to the outside
of the machine
(Fig. 1).
The alignment of the stand SV-30 support can also be changed in length and
angle as required (the stainless steel version's angle can't be changed).
The horizontal alignment of the control shaft must be correct for proper
functioning of the Control Valves SV-95.1-5, SV-95-10!
5. Run the fabric slowly and observe the course (CMD) of the fabric and the
Guide. If the Guide movement is too slow or too fast, this can be changed by
means of the one-way restrictor valves.
Please note that the actuating force of the pneumatic cylindre can be changed
by means of the air pressure at the service unit. The air throughput, which
affects the adjusting speed, can be set by means of one-way restrictor valves.
5.4 Functioning of the mechanical feedback unit
A change in the sensor paddle angle effects a change of the pressure conditions
in the pneumatic cylinder of the control device because of the design of the Con-
trol Valve (continuously variable pneumatic valve). The compensation for these
pressure differentials causes the control movement.
Because of the rigid connection of the mechanical feedback unit to the bearing yoke/
support plate, the Guide movement activates a transverse movement (CMD) of the
Control Valve (see illustration) caused by the parallelogram of the feedback unit.

The transverse movement of the Control Valve causes attenuation and therefore
a "damping" of the control signal.
This behaviour leads to a faster correction of the fabric deviation and a uniform
straight run of the fabric, particularly at low machines speeds (including when the
machine starts up. This particularly leads to lower wear of moving parts of the
Guide because of the shorter travel distances.
5.5 Precautionary measures during installation and operation

1. Roller bearing: The bearing assembly must consist of a xed and oating bea-
ring, whereby the oating bearing should be tted at the Guide. The bearing
assembly must be able to compensate for angular offset (e.g. self-aligning
roller bearing).
2. The bearing housing must not jam in the bearing yoke, i.e. there must be
sufcient clearance.
3. Lubricate between the bearing yoke drill hole and the bearing housing.
4. Check whether the fastening screws of the Guide are properly tightened.
5. Check whether the fastening screws for the top of the bearing yoke are pro-
perly tightened.
6. Check that all the air lines are of adequate dimensions and in a serviceable
condition and that the connectors are correctly tightened and leakproof.
7. If it is necessary to perform a lot of work in the immediate vicinity of the Guide,
a contact guard should be tted at the bearing yoke to prevent drawing in with
bruises or gashes caused by a sharp fabric edge.
8. Avoid direct, constant water spraying onto the Guide. If necessary, install a
screen.

6. Regular Maintenance
Before carrying out maintenance and repair works:
Switch off the overall system and prevent from being activated unintentionally
(switch off the compressed air supply and attach warning sign).
6.1 Cleaning
Cleaning interval: Once a year for dryer section
Twice a year for wet section, (wire and press)
The sliding rails, sliding guides and cam rollers must be checked for wear, dirt
and damage. If there is severe dirt on the Guide, clean the Guide to guarantee
proper functioning.
Check the pneumatic cylinder regularly for leaks. If the cylinder is leaking, examine
the piston rod and cylinder bore for damage. Replace any damaged parts before
tting new seals. If no damage can be found, the piston seal and piston rod seal
must be changed. If the o-rings are still in good condition, they can be reused.
6.2 Lubrication and Recommended lubricant
Cam rollers resp. sliding rails should be lubricated with a suitable grease during
scheduled machine shutdowns. Proper are high performance multi-purpose
greases according DIN KP2K-20 (e.g. Shell Alvania Grease EP2).
The lubrication should be mentioned in the lubricating diagram of the paper ma-
chine.
Cylinder walls are pre-lubricated with heat-resistant Siliconegrease on Li-basis
(Chemplex SI400 medium from Fuchs Lubritech). Further lubrication of the cylinder
is accomplished via the oil-laden air from the service unit.
Service unit and Control Valve
Use oil depending to the installation site and temperature at this environment.
Hydraulic oil to DIN 51524-HLP of viscosity class ISO VG32 is recommended.
These oils have a basic viscosity (at 40C) of 32 mm2/s and are therefore suitable
for use in the wet section of the machine.
Because the viscosity reduces with increasing temperature, oil with a higher basic
viscosity (ISO VG150/220) should be used in the dry section.

10.1 Procedure in the event of malfunction
The following details are designed to enable smaller problems to be quickly found
and rectied.
1. The rolls are not parallel.
- All rolls must be parallel to each other on every plane (adjust).
2. The Guide works off center.
- Move the Guide to the appropriate side using the hand carriage.
- Correct the fabric on one end with the manual tensioner provided or the
fabric tensioning device.

3. No even control behavior detectable:
Check the mechanical feedback unit for correct installation (position of thread
rod! - see chapter 5.3 and 5.4)
4. Guiding speed too slow / too fast:
Adjust the Air volume by means of the one-way restrictors at the air outlet end
of the cylinder.

5. Poor guiding result despite large travel of Guide:
Check wrap angle of fabric at guiding roll incl. friction conditions. Check for
better position if necessary. Increase specic fabric tension if necessary.

6. Uneven fabric length and/or fabric tension on drive and tender side (felt dis-
torted at one end).
- Correct the fabric tension at one end using the hand clamp regulating rol-
ler or the fabric tensioning device.
7. Wrong setting of Control Valve and sensor paddle.
- Check whether the red mark on the guide disk is aligned with the red mark
on the housing of Control Valve.
8. Fabric edge not straight.
- Cut edge of fabric until straight.
9. Fabric wrap angle on guiding roll is too small.
- Increase wrap angle.
- If necessary, the Guide should be mounted in the bisection of the wrap angle.
10. Fabric tension too low. The specic fabric tension specied by the supplier of
the fabric are not maintained.
- Increase fabric tension. This increases the friction between the guiding roll
and fabric.
11. Jerky movement of Guide.
- Check oil level in the service unit.
- Check moving Parts of Guide and service if necessary.
- Check load on Guide.
12. Sensor paddle loses contact with fabric edge. (sluggish shaft on Control Valve).
- Clean sensor paddle and Control Valve. If necessary, get Control Valve
checked by JUD AG.
- Check air quality and air pressure and adjust as required.
