Hello everyone I'm a wedding and boudoir photographer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Here
is my boudoir website: Boudoir by Opie
WARNING: There will be photos of half naked women in this post.
The Lesson
Lighting
Natural Light:
The cheapest lighting set up and the easiest to use is of course natural window light. If
you are blessed with a location that has large windows then use it over any other
lighting source. Use a reflector on a stand if your shooting alone to add some extra fill
in the image. I'm lazy and just position my subjects in a way that I don't need to use a

in the image. I'm lazy and just position my subjects in a way that I don't need to use a
reflector but if they bring a friend along then I put a reflector in their hands.

Hot Lights:
I purchased a small hot light for around $350 and I use it for every boudoir session.

I purchased a small hot light for around $350 and I use it for every boudoir session.
The hot light has a continuous warm look with a yellow color temperature. This
lighting is very flattering for boudoir and it gives a warm romantic feel to the images.
This light can be dramatic or soft. I have a StarLite bulb and a small soft box.

Strobe:
I hardly ever use a strobe because I like the look of natural light over strobe. I'll bust
out a strobe if it's a dark and rainy day with no window light.
Video Light:
I have a small hand held video light but I only use it if I have someone that is able to
hold it and point it at my subject.

Boudoir Locations:
Photographer's Home or Studio: I highly recommend setting up a place in your home
or studio for boudoir photography if it's something you want to offer 100%. You'll want

or studio for boudoir photography if it's something you want to offer 100%. You'll want
to get a bed frame, mattresses, and chairs for a simple set up. If you don't have room
or can't afford a bed then use the floor. You can find some great vintage chairs at any
antique or thrift shop. Then get some beautiful silk drapes or use the drop it modern
backdrops with a damask pattern. If you make a small investment in a boudoir set up
then you and your client wont have to pay to shoot in a location.
Here are pictures of my studio:

Your Client's Home: This is always a wild card location because you have no idea how
much space and lighting you have to work with. Also, you have no idea what the decor
is like in your clients home. You also run the risk of the husband or boyfriend coming
home in mid photo shoot.
Hotel: This is will be a beautiful and reliable location for boudoir photo shoots but it
comes with it's own challenges. Most nice hotel rooms are going to cost you or your
client a good amount of money to book for the night ($200-$300). Just because you
Do you need professional PDFs? Try PDFmyURL!
client a good amount of money to book for the night ($200-$300). Just because you
paid for the room doesn't mean you can shoot boudoir pictures in it. Most hotels don't
allow professional photography in their rooms because your a business charging
someone money to take those pictures and using their hotel room to profit. You'll need
to get permission in writing from the owner or manager of the hotel before shooting
any pictures. If you decide to not get permission then you can be banned from the
hotel or thrown out on the spot.
On Location: This option is the most daring. Most client's are going to want to do their
boudoir shoot in a private bed room setting. If you can talk a client into shooting
outside on location then of course you'll need to select a private location. There are
probably local laws that say you can't be half naked in public so select your location
wisely.
Flattering Angles and Posing:
Most women will say that the areas they are most uncomfortable with are their
tummy and thighs. If you have a full figured client never let her know you are doing
certain poses to make her look thinner. Compliment her curves and outfit. It's your
job to highlight the featured and hide the flaws.
Have her lay down on her back and have her arch her back to push the boobs up and
slim the tummy. Focus on her face and have her bring her chin up.
If she has larger arms then crop in cutting part of the arm off and bringing the focus
in on her face.
Use a 2.8 aperture to focus on the highlights of her body and throw the flaws out of
focus.
Have her lay down on her tummy to hide the parts she is most insecure about and
again focus on her face. This pose will also create a good amount of cleavage.
Don't do too many standing poses with a full figured women.
The expressions are key to making any of these poses super sexy.
I'm 5'1 tall and once some of these girls get heels on they are a good foot taller then
me. This is a problem because I never want to shoot up at the subject because it can
create a double chin. I purchased a step stool that will get me at the same high or
taller then my subject.
Heels! Make your client wear heels for all standing poses. The heels will make her
have better posture and they naturally make the boobs and butt stick out creating a
sexy curve in the back. There is a reason why women wear the stupid things.

Your Clients Comfort
Always keep in mind what the temperature is in the room. She will be half naked and
you'll be comfortable fully clothed. In the winter I will light a fire in the fireplace and
bring in a small space heater to warm up the room before and during the photo shoot.
You don't want goosebumps in your pictures. In the summer I have to open up a few
windows and bring in a small fan to keep the air moving. I would rather have a client
look too warm then too cold in the pictures. I provide a soft robe for them to wear
during hair and makeup and if they get too cold.
Do you need professional PDFs? Try PDFmyURL!
during hair and makeup and if they get too cold.
I always play music during the boudoir session. I find that complete silence can make
your subject feel awkward and stiff. I usually play upbeat dance and top 40 kind of
music. Any music that they can sing along with and dance too will make them feel
comfortable.
I give all clients a bottled water and a small snack. Some of my boudoir sessions run
2-5 hours long so I want to make sure they have food and water during the shoot. I do
not offer my clients alcohol because according to the local state law I have to have a
liquor license in order to serve alcohol. I would recommend talking to a lawyer about
alcohol before you serve it. It's better to be safe then sorry.
You as the photographer are the number one factor to making a boudoir client feel
comfortable. Always give positive verbal encouragement through the entire photo
shoot. While I'm shooting I will say, "beautiful" "gorgeous" "stunning" "perfect!"
"love it!" Call your client by her name and then give instruction. Also, I find it helps if
you demo the pose you want to do instead of trying to describe it. If your willing to do
the pose then they will feel more comfortable doing it themselves. Have them lay out
everything they brought with them to the photo shoot and then select the outfits from
the most clothing to the least amount of clothing. Your client will feel more
comfortable along the way. Talk to your client before you start shooting about how
Do you need professional PDFs? Try PDFmyURL!
comfortable along the way. Talk to your client before you start shooting about how
much skin they want to show. Never assume they are comfortable showing everything
or assume they want it to be conservative. You never want the client walking away
feeling you pressured her into doing full nude or having her walk away thinking the
photos won't be risque enough for her husband.
Beauty
I always encourage boudoir clients to spend a little extra and do professional hair and
makeup. I subcontract out the hair and makeup depending on what artist is available.
The hair and makeup artist comes strait to the studio to do the boudoir look and I pay
her directly. This means the client shows up to one location ready to get done up and
photographed. If the boudoir client selects a boudoir package that doesn't include hair
and makeup then I email them the following info:
"Please arrive to the shoot with your hair and make-up done. We highly recommend
that you make an appointment to get your make-up professionally done at a MAC
makeup store ($50) and we also recommend purchasing their eyelashes ($12) (they
look awesome in the photos).
For your hair, don't feel the need to do anything too extravagant; sometimes hair
looks best when it's just straightened or curled with hot rollers."
Touch Ups
Do you need professional PDFs? Try PDFmyURL!
Touch Ups
I offer free touch ups on all printed boudoir products: prints, albums, and calendars. I
deliver to the client natural proofs in an online gallery. Touch ups are not done if she
just orders the digital negatives on DVD. This creates value for the boudoir products I
offer. I also tell clients that all touch ups are mild skin touch ups such as removing:
blemishes, stretch marks, and cellulite. I don't use the liquify tool unless they ask for
something more extreme and even then I have my limits.
I hope everyone finds this lesson education. Let me know if you have any questions.

Opie, Welcome to 2Peas and thank you so much for sharing your tips and information!
Can you share your suggestions for marketing Boudoir Photography? I do not currently
do this (and may not ever), but the marketing side of various specialties intrigues me.

Beautiful work and thank you again for sharing!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. Your work is stunning!
I have a question. I have a friend that wants to do a pin-up style, betty paige, type of
shoot this weekend. She is on the short side, maybe 5 feet tall and on the full figured
side. Above you mentioned not to use standing poses with a full figured subject. What
type of posing would you recommend for this type of shoot? I have not seen the
outfits she has planned for this session but she did mention a high waisted pencil skirt
as one option. Any thoughts?
My set up is plain colored paper backdrops, white and black fabric back drops and a
demask fabric back drop. I use canon and have a 50mm 1.8, 70-300mm and standard
kit lens and 430 speedlight. I also have 2 strobe lights with unbrellas and I have a
studio space with 5 large south facing windows and a large gold& silver reflector. I
mainly shoot children and families but have done one boudior session with another
friend before Christmas. I can post a sample from it later today.
Thanks again so much for sharing your knowledge.

Wow your work examples and explanations are wonderful. Your work with lighting as
awesome. Although I have not done boudoir and not ready technically to yet I found
your lesson very useful and appreciate you sharing so much. I think this is the most
technically and difficult realm pf photography to shoot. Maybe its because I know with
my weight problem I would not feel comfortable in front of a camera like that. You
certainly create a mood and atmosphere where your client will be comfortable and at
ease. ~Jackie

Thanks so much for taking the time to pull this all together! Boudoir is something I
would love to try someday. Right now, I don't have a studio, and my market is really,
really conservative. Which leads me to my question--how do you market this type of
work in a very conservative area? It's difficult to even get maternity clients here.

First of all, your work is stunning! I can tell your clients feel beautiful and I know they

I especially love your tips (and numerous examples) for full-figured women. They all
look so lovely, and I can see how the posing is absolutely essential.

thank you so much for sharing this. You put together a wonderful lesson and your
work is stunning. Thank you for including tips for full figured women on helping them
to feel beautiful and using angles to your best advantage. while I'm not currently
doing boudoir photos, what you said has been helpful for any indoor shoots! Can't wait
to check out your site!

Thank you for coming here and giving us such a detailed/fantastic lesson. I hope this
generates a ton of traffic to your website too
I love the fact you provide water and snacks for your clients. It's the little extras that
take it to that next level. I also love your use of lighting to flatter the women. You
have a way of making them sexy without being sleazy--a fine line in my opinion and
one reason I've not really considered doing boudoir photography in the past.
All women are beautiful and I bet no matter their shape/size, you bring out the best in
them.
I wonder... do you have any pregnant boudoir? I'd LOVE to see how to accentuate
those curves.
Thank you again for taking time out to come share with us.

Opie, welcome to 2peas! Thank you so much for doing this! Your expertise,
generosity, and time are greatly appreciated. Your work is fabulous. I love that this is
a subject we don't generally see a lot of here.
Now, off to see if I can recruit a willing subject!!

I have shot maternity boudoir but they didn't have a belly yet. They usually schedule
in their first few weeks of pregnancy because they want to get some boudoir pictures
fast before pregnancy does a number of their body.
For facial expressions I would recommend looking at a Victoria's Secret magazine and
then practice those "sexy serious" and "sexy flirt" looks in the mirror. That's right, you
have to get the facial expression down before you can show your client how to do it. I
tell girls to open their mouth a little bit and give some intense eyes.

Opie, thank you so much!!! Your work has always been so inspiring to me, and I love
that you were willing to come here and share it with us. The shots of your studio are
so helpful, and I never would have thought about having to get permission in writing
for shooting in a hotel. That is definitely some great info to know.
I love all of your shots, and now I need to go back through and make all of my notes
etc. Thank you again!!!! You're a rockstar!

Do you have any good tips for posing women who are smaller-chested? I know
personally it's hard sometimes to feel very seductive when you barely fill up an A-cup.

fantastic lesson too. It was so perfectly organized and well thought out.
I may be doing a boudoir shoot next month -- at first I thought about turning it down,
but after seeing this -- maybe I'll give it a try!
I especially loved your advice about how to take flattering pics of different body
types.
I hope you will continue to stick around on the board.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is a great lesson! I have a friend who is considering having me do some boudoir
photos and this helps so much.
Molly, I have only ever taken boudoir self portraits of myself for DH but one thing I
discovered is that what looks good in a photo does not really have anything to do with
what I would actually wear in the bedroom, KWIM? I bought a scratchy,
uncomfortable, cheap, lacy, itchy bra that was one size too small so that created LOTS
of cleavage and thigh highs that were waaaay too big to avoid making my rolls on my
thunder thighs. I am sure the OP will have better advice, though!
