a once live wild boar that turned into a
rock. Link with history, Nagngangang Buaya played a significant role in the
Christianization of the province. It was the place where the galleon Espiritu Santo,
boarding Fray Diego de Herera and his nine other companions, bound to Cebu from
Acapulco, Mexico suffered shipwrecked on April 25, 1576. Notwithstanding the bad
fate met by the group, such incident paved way toward Christianization of the whole
province of Catanduanes, with Fray Diego de Herera planting its first seed in the
community of Barangay Batalay. However, due to the refusal of the natives to an
abrupt renunciation of their ancestral faith, spread of Christianity in the place was slow.
As such, Bato became a parish only after two and a half century. That was in the year
1830 with a certain Fr. Raymundo as the first Parish Priest. A 400-year old wooden cross
planted on top of the grave of Fray Diego De Herera was a distinct evidence of such
historical event. Nagngangang Buaya can be reached through a tricky climb in the
rocky mountain or by simply riding on a paddled boat from the coast of Sacahon
Beach.

Aside from enjoying the tranquil waters of Sacahon
Beach, one who wants to grasp the majestic
waterscape and landscape encompassing the
beach may proceed to a 10 to 15 minutes climb
towards the light house atop Mt. Bote. The stiff and
rocky path towards the tower may cost you a
considerable amount of calories as you bath your
entire body with sweat. Nevertheless, the climb is
really rewarding. The startling view will not only
remove at a spur-of-the-moment the strain of a
tiresome climb but will also eliminate the stress
caused by the daily clamor for earning a living,
especially of those who are really exerting their best to meet the target work
accomplishment in the busy days in town or city.

The verdant picture of the grassland and of the
forest, the waterscape in its bluish color reflecting
the wonderful view of the sky on a fine sunny day,
the crystalline water which allows anyone to gaze
upon its undisturbed coral reefs underneath, and
the quite ambience of the community below
those are the wonderful scenery that will
mesmerize ones eyes as he stands observantly at
any point of the spiral staircase of the lighthouse.
These are the faces of a true beauty that God painted for mankind, and this is the
same beauty that will urge anyone to guard and preserve His amazing work of art.

At present, the Municipal Government is crafting its way toward obtaining stewardship
of the foregoing areas through eco-management contract with the DENR and other
involved agencies. Such move is expected not only to enhance flock of local and
foreign tourists and bring further development in the area, but will also preserve the
natural beauty of the environment.

Reckoned back to history, traces of
World War II can still be found on the
crest of Mt. Gababang Bato in
Barangay Carorian at the height of
approximately 350 meters above sea
level. The evidence of extensive forced
labor suffered by Filipino Guerillas
caught by the Japanese forces was
portrayed by the massive underground
bunkhouses used as shield by the
Japanese. Living war veterans in the
town shared stories of hardship in
carrying sands and gravel at their back
from the shore of Barangay Batalay toward the top of the mountain while being
guarded by the Japanese armies and with only a handful of rice consumption in a day.
Today, one may enjoy the freedom of a safe-climb towards the former Japanese
Garrison and experience a real fat-burning hike, as such, amateur climber should make
sure that their bodily conditions are fit and can tolerate the strenuous climb. A climb will
take you approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. With its clear campsites
surmounted by fruitful native guava trees and blessed by nearby clear water sources,
former Japanese Garrison is safe for overnight encampment.
