Retrofitting of CFC Appliances
with HC Refrigerants
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
2
Need for Retrofitting
Extremely large number of units are in
operation
Servicing of refrigeration appliances is very
common
CFC will be increasingly non-available in the
near future
Use of drop-in refrigerants for servicing will
reduce CFC emissions
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
3
Make an assessment of the appliance for
conversion
Decide which HC is to be used
Follow the requisite retrofitting procedure
recover refrigerant
repair
replace, re-position, enclose electrical
components
leak test, charge, label
Steps for Retrofitting
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
4
When to Retrofit?
If & when sealed refrigeration system needs
repair
(e.g. leaking, failed compressor, blocked drier)
Do not retrofit properly working appliances
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
5
Inspection of Appliance
Note type, make, capacity & other relevant details
Note types of compressor-related electrical
components used (Relay, OLP)
Note remaining electrical components
Thermostat
Switches
Light Fittings
Wiring
Note the amount of CFC refrigerant charged
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
6
Assessment of Appliance
Are there unsafe electrical devices?
If so,
then we need to:
replace
or
enclose
or
move

7
Sealed Overload Protector
and PTC Relay

8
Assessment of the Thermostat
Replace with sealed type
or
Enclose
or
Move
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
9
Assessment of other
Electrical Devices
Wiring connections
ensure tight (e.g. spade and socket types)
Door switch, on / off switch
disconnect, replace with sealed type or move
Internal light
eliminate, seal or replace with sealed holder
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
10
You do not need to replace
Capacitors
(if explosion-proof)
Fan motors
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
11
Sealed Enclosure
Sealed Box as per BS 5345 Part I
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
12
Limitation of Retrofitting
Do not Convert
Domestic appliances with > 375 gm CFC12
Commercial appliances with > 625g CFC12
No-frost appliances
Appliances with high cost of conversion
Do not try to reduce the cost by
not making necessary changes
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
13
Which Refrigerant to use?
Same capacity
Better efficiency
Similar pressure /
temperature
No change in the
refrigeration circuit
No oil change
R 12
HC Blend
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
14
Do not vent CFC12
Do you have a
recovery machine?
Do you have a
recovery cylinder?
Step 1- Recovery
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
15
Step 2-Repair and Test
Make repairs as necessary now
- it is not necessary to fit a different type of
drier
Pressure and leak test
- as for CFC12
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
16
Step 3 - Change Electrical
Devices
Change electrical devices as necessary
replace with sealed / solid state types
or
enclose in sealed box
or
move away from circuit
or
eliminate
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
17
Step 4 - Evacuate
Evacuate system
to CFC12 standard
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
18
Step 5 - Charge with HC
Remove blend as liquid
Use 40% of CFC-12 weight
- pressures will be similar to CFC12
MSE-ToT-HC Retrofitting-Final-
Dec01.ppt
19
Crimping twice and braze carefully
or
Check tube for leaks
use soapy water/ electronic leak detector
Step 6 - Seal the Process Tube

20
Step 7 - Label the Appliance
Refrigerant: HC Blend: Flammable

Example of Retrofitting
Chest bottle cooler
No electrical components inside
Unsealed thermostat
Combined, sealed relay/OLP
