Ob$ecti%e"
The learning ob'ecti(es in this laboratory gi(e the student the ability to:
)se the oscilloscope internal s&eep generator!
)se the oscilloscope trigger le(el and slope controls!
)se the oscilloscope to display the difference of t&o signals!
)se the oscilloscope for frequency, phase angle and (oltage measurements!

/scilloscope time mode:
0n the last lab you learned ho& to use the oscilloscope in 123 mode! 0n this lab you &ill
use the oscilloscope in time2based! 0n time 4or s&eep5 mode the oscilloscope samples the
(oltage le(els of the input channels o(er time! The (oltage on the input channels causes
the display to deflect (ertically and the hori6ontal ais represents the time domain! 3ou
can ad'ust the seconds per di(ision to display more or less of the &a(eform and you can
ad'ust the (ertical sensiti(ity to change the (ertical (olts per di(ision!
/scilloscope math operations:
This generation of oscilloscopes allo&s you to do mathematical operations on the input
&a(eforms! 3ou can then display the results of these mathematical operations as another
input &a(eform! This allo&s you to obser(e &a(eforms that you could not measure
directly!

/scilloscope trigger:
The oscilloscope is used to obser(e repetiti(e signals! 0f the screen is redra&n &ith the
display signal in a different part of its cycle each time the oscilloscope screen &ill sho& a
drifting &a(e shape! 7 trigger is used to catch the displayed signal in the same location
e(ery time the screen is redra&n! The trigger controls include source selection, le(el
selection, slope selection, and time delay! The source can be set to channel ,, channel 2,
line 48+ 96 po&er line5, or eternal! The le(el control ad'usts the (oltage le(el of the
source at &hich the &a(eform &ill be dra&n from the center of the screen! The slope
s&itch determines if the trigger &ill on the signals positi(e slope or the negati(e slope! 0t
is easy to see &here the oscilloscope &ill trigger the &a(eform by loo:ing at the trigger
le(el indicators on the screen!
/scilloscope phase angle measurements:
;hase angle measurements include an angle and a sign! The phase angle can be measured
manually by reading off the screen or automatically by the oscilloscope! 7 phase angle
difference includes a sign as &ell as a magnitude! 0f <r occurs, say *+
o
, earlier in time
than <s, then <r leads <s by *+
o
or <s lags <r by *+
o
, and the phase angle difference is
<r 2 <s = >*+
o
! 0f <c occurs, say *+
o
, later in time than <s, then <s leads <c by *+
o
or
<c lags <s by *+
o
, and the phase angle difference is <c2 <s = 2*+
o
!
RC Circuit E*uati!"#
For the RC circuit in Figure ,, the phase difference bet&een <r and <s is
<r 2 <s = ?+
o
2tan
2,
4CR5
&here
C is the capacitance in Farads, and = 2f, +
o
tan

and the phase difference bet&een <c and <s is
<c2 <s = 2tan

4CR5
For the RC circuit in Figure ,, the magnitude ratio <r@<s can be found by using the
(oltage di(ider equation gi(en in class, <r = <s A R, @ 4R,>R25! 0n this case, R, is the
(alue of the resistor in the circuit, R! R2 is the impedance of the capacitor, 4'BC5,
&hich is dependent on the fruequency of ecitation! The (oltage di(ider can be
algebraically re2&ritten to gi(e the follo&ing result:
Ci:e&ise, the magnitude ratio <c@<s can be &ritten as:
