SITE AND MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS TO MEET LEED CRITERIA

Erosion and sedimentation control

It is required to develop and implement erosion and sedimentation control plan, to prevent
soil erosion through storm water and wind, both during construction and post-development.
Actions to be taken during the construction come under the builders. But the designers
(landscape architect, MEP consultant, etc) need make sure that the feature required
preventing erosion and sedimentation after the construction is included in the design.
Storm Water Management
The drain system should be designed so that any storm water leaving the site doesnt carry
away any debris and suspended solids. There should be a filter (sand & pebbles) to prevent
suspended solids entering municipal storm water drainage i. Sedimentation chambers and pits
are recommended.
Landscape

All hard landscape needs to be done using lighter color materials to reduce heat islands to
minimize impacts on microclimate and humans. Hardscape material has to have a solar
reflectance index higher than 29. Interlocking paving blocks or lighter color concrete can
meet these requirements.

All soft landscape should be done with climate tolerant native or adapted vegetation that can
survive under natural rainfall.
Roofing
Use roofing materials with solar reflecting index equal to or greater than the values given
below for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface.
Low slope roof (less than 10deg) should have SRI > 78 (white color roofing sheet)
Steep roof (greater than 10 deg) should have Sri > 29 (beige, gray, natural ZnAl )
Flooring
Typical flooring can be tiles or terrazzo or cut cement. If floor paints are to be used, those
should have VOC levels given in the following sections. Carpets and carpet cushions shall
have GREEN LABLE PLUS certification. All other hard surface flooring materials should
comply with the FLOORSCORE standards.

Certified Wood
The broad intent of this credit is to preserve the forest resources. At least 50% of total wood
used in the building should be certified by the Forest stewardship council (FSC). 50% of any
virgin wood (by value) should be purchased through sources that have the FSC certification.
Typically the following applications could be considered for use of FSC wood: Doors and
windows, frames, beadings, etc.

Comment [A1]: Is this correct?
Low Emitting Materials
Adhesives and sealants
The intent is to reduce / avoid use of materials, which are irritating and potentially cause
health problems to the installation workmen and occupants.
The requirement is that the materials should conform to certain specificied VOC limits. The
list of applications and VOC requirements are provided in the following table.

criteria.

Composite Wood
Composite wood can be used for certain area of interior particianing. Composite wood used
in the building should not have urea-formaldehyde based resins. However, wood with phenol
- formaldehyde resin can be used.

MATERIALS IMPACTING WATER EFFICIENCY

All water fixtures used in the project should confirm to the following flow requirements to
reduce water useage:

Fixture Flow Requirement
Water Closets (lpf) 3.5
Urinals (lpf) 1
Showerheads (lpm)* 3.7
Kitchen Taps (lpm) 3.7
Washbasin Faucets (lpm)** 1.5
Pre rinse spray valve (lpm) 5.5
Metering Faucet (self closing) (l /cycle) 0.9

**Flow rates are measured at 5.5bar
*Flow rates are measured at 4.15bar

Water treated to tertiary level can be used flushing and/or irrgation

MATERIALS IMPACTING ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The materials for the following would be selected based on the results of energy simulation:
