Historical Background Of Est Ein Ros
Est Ein Ros
Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen, aus einer Wurzel zart,
Of Jesse's lineage coming, as those of old have sung. Wie uns die Alten sungen, von Jesse kam die Art,
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, Und hat ein Blmlein bracht mitten im kalten Winter
When half spent was the night. Wohl zu der halben Nacht.
Isaiah 'twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind; Das Rslein, das ich meine, davon Jesaias sagt,
Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind. Ist Maria die Reine uns das Blmlein bracht.
To show God's love aright, she bore to us a Savior, Aus Gottes ew'gen Rat hat sie ein Kind geboren
When half spent was the night. Und blieb ein' reine Magd.
The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright, Der Engel unverdrossen fuhr in der Juden Land
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night. Gen Nazareth; verschlossen Marien er da fand
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger they found Him, In inrem Kammerlein. Er sprach sie an so freundlich:
As angel heralds said. Gegrusst sei, Jungfrau rein.

Est ein Ros (Lo how a rose) is perhaps the most beloved of carols.
Sixteenth century German sources show as many as twenty-six
stanzas describing prophecies of Jesus birth, though only three are
used here. The well-known English translation of the first two
stanzas is by Theodore Baker, literary editor at G. Schirmer in the
early 20th century and author of Bakers Biographical Dictionary of
Musicians. Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth translated the third
stanza, written by Friedrich Layritz early in the nineteenth century.
While the music for Est ein Ros is traceable to the 1580s the Alte
Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesng printed in 1599 is often cited as
the source for the setting by Michael Praetorius in his 1609 Musiae
Sionae, which endures. The present setting, with new harmonies
and flute obbligato, is drawn from Mr. Arnests Carol Fantasia, also
available from Amber Waves. The German text may also be used
with this setting.
