The VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier.
(PCB Model PCO346)
The VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier includes a few
modifications since the implementation of the VDV
Infinity series Line Amplifier.
Major differences being the removal of the in
circuit Pilot Tone (Standard in Infinity Series) and
the addition of Uplink / Downlink Pilot Tone
selection (Infinity II).
The benefit of the latter being that a system may
be operated with multiple Pilot references without
those references mixing at a point within the system.

As with the VDV Infinity Line Amplifier, the VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier includes;
External indicators of Power & Pilot Tone.
Broad band of amplifier response.
Low power consumption (nominally 1.2W).
Forward / Reverse 22dB nominal gain.
Inbuilt diagnostic transmitter as standard.
Programmable diagnostic IDs.
Limited number of variable tuning points.

AGC Ref erence Sel ecti on
The VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier has the option of
having its AGC controlled by a reference from
either an Uplink or Downlink source.
The selection of the AGC Reference source is made
by selecting either ULP (Uplink) or DLP (Downlink)
headers with a pin jumper.
Failure to install a jumper in either of the header
locations will result in the VDV Infinity Line
Amplifier AGC operating without a Pilot Reference
(or free gain).
Care must be taken to ensure that there is a Pilot
Source from the direction selected.
If not, then the Line Amplifier AGC will subsequently operate without a Pilot Reference (or free
gain).
A Pilot Tone may be generated from the VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier by inserting a Pilot Tone
PCB in the appropriate location (view Pilot Tone article).

The VDV Infinity II Line Amplifier may have a Pilot Tone PCB installed in order to
provide an AGC reference from within a Leaky Feeder distribution.
This Pilot Tone may be installed at any point within the system, however it should be
installed with the appropriate system plan in mind.
Generally, when the Uplink Pilot Tone configuration is utilised, then the Line
Amplifier should accordingly be the last amplifier in the line. This will then provide a
reference for all previous Line Amplifiers in order to control their AGC.
Alternatively, the Downlink Pilot Tone configuration should be utilised at the start of
the line. It could possibly be the first amplifier in a Branch of the distribution, for
example. A system could possibly, and perhaps ideally, have multiple configurations
of both Uplink & Downlink Pilot Tones operating concurrently.
The system could be configured with the MAIN line (eg Decline) of the distribution
controlled by an Uplink Pilot Tone installed in the last amplifier in the Main Line.
Subsequent branches (eg Levels) from this main line may be controlled by a Downlink
Pilot Tone installed in the first amplifier of that particular branch (eg Level Access).
When utilised, the PCB is to be installed upon two rows of five pin headers (as
indicated). Care must be taken to ensure the PCB has been aligned correctly and all
pins are connected. It is not difficult to misalign the PCB and subsequently for the
unit not to operate correctly.
To install a Pilot Tone PCB in order to provide an Uplink reference orientate the
mount hole with ULP (text on the PCB) aligned with the amplifier mount post.
To install a Pilot Tone PCB in order to provide an Downlink reference orientate the
mount hole with DLP (text on the PCB) aligned with the amplifier mount post.
When installed the Pilot LED indication of the front of the VDV Infinity II housing will
light indicating that the Line Amplifier has a Pilot Tone PCB installed. If the Pilot
Tone LED indication does not light, then there is a problem which needs to be
addressed.
To assist in fault finding firstly check to see if the Power LED indicator is operating.
Also check to verify that the PCB has been installed correctly.

The VDV Infinity Line Amplifier II has inbuilt diagnostics transmitter as a standard. To
implement a diagnostic function, it is necessary to purchase a VDV Diagnostic
Receiver to process the reports from the VDV Infinity II Line Amplifiers & the VDV
Diagnostic Server software.
The VDV Infinity II Line Amplifiers can subsequently then be programmed with
information (via the diagnostic programming header) such as, Amplifier ID number,
reporting frequency, frequency of operation etc.
Implementation of the diagnostic system will then become an integral part of the
VDV Leaky Feeder Radio System fault finding & monitoring regime.
