BOILER SAFETY

CORRECTIVE / PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Furnace inspection
Furnace inspection door To view combustion dark glasses should be work and care
should be taken to stand to one side to guard against furnace distribution. Never open
a furnace inspection door to view combustion without prior knowledge of the boiler
operation.

Maintenance work
Before commencing any maintenance work on boiler unit or auxiliaries particularly
those item connected to an electrical power supply. The plant must be completely
isolated, both mechanically & electrically , In accordance with current safety
regulation

Steam & water source Isolation
Prior to opening up a boiler for inspection, cleaning, or maintenance must be cool and
extreme care must be taken to prevent steam or hot water entering from the system
that may be under pressure from other source. This include steam and feed piping,
drains and blow down lines, Which can be connected to the system in use and it is
imperative. Therefore, to avoid serious accident that boiler is completely isolated
from any steam and water sources by locked shut off valve blanking is required.

Residual Pressure or vacuum
If necessary demands opening up any pressure part on a hot boiler, a check must be
made to ensure that there is no residual pressure or vacuum by means of air release or
vent provided pressure gauge reading are not to be taken for granted under these
circumstances.

Safety measures for internal inspection and during start-up
When inspecting the boiler unit internally protective clothing, goggles and gloves,
footwears and helmet must be worn before entering any enclosed internal space. A
hand held inspection lamp of the twenty-four volt (24volt) type or a torch should be
taken inside for checking. Before going for internal inspection or other enclosed
space, there must be another person posted outside at the inspection / access door
monitoring the movement of the operator inside so that, if necessary, external
assistance may be sought for due to any emergency situation.

Residual heat
Before entering the furnace or gas passages to carry out an inspection, maintenance or
water washing, the amount of residual heat must be carefully considered

Hot/Dust/ or noxious /inflammable gas
Accumulation of dust /flue gas contaminant particles can retain high temperature
inside for extended period and on contact with water can generate sufficient steam to
injure any unprotected person in the immediate vicinity. The effect in accentuated in a
confined space precaution must therefore be taken to avoid scalding of operators and
adequate ventilation must be ensured to guard against the possible presence of
noxious or inflammable gas.

Flue gas leakage and fire fighting equipment
Firing galleries should be kept clean, Any fuel gas leaks should be immediately
rectified. All precaution should be taken to avoid boiler front fires, and spray fire
fighting equipment must be maintained in good order as prescribed by manufacturer.
The pipe workers & valves etc. Should be use prescribed manner.
Burning / welding within boiler interior
Should any burning or welding be carried out within the boiler interior, this space
must be adequately ventilated, suitable fire fighting must be avoidable together with a
bucker of water for cooling any dismantle part- staging complying with the factory act
must be used in those places in accessible to the furnace asses

Safety hazards
Steam and water at elevated pressure and temperature-
Saturated steam is generated in the boilers this is visible. However, extreme care
should be taken when trying to locate it sampling of steam and water must be carried
out with care, gloves and face mask must be worn.

Mechanical equipment
o Moving machinery can always be dangerous, this should be treated with
respect it should be ensured that guards are in place on all operating
machinery
o Flue gases have very low oxygen content and will cause asphyxiation. If
breathed even for a short time

High pressure and Low pressure dosing chemicals
Water treatment used in High pressure and Low pressure dosing are both irritants
and toxic if ingested gloves and eye protection must be worn when handling these
chemeicals.

Noise
It can permanently damage the hearing ability

Safety of persons working inside boiler

No person shall be compelled or allowed, by the owner or person in charge, to go
inside a steam boiler for any purpose whatsoever unless the boiler is effectively
disconnected in the manner hereinafter prescribed from any steam or hot water
communication with any other boiler.

Effective disconnection shall be made either by the removal of the boiler stop valve
or of a length of piping from all steam and hot water connection with any other
boiler, vessel or pipe containing steam or hot water by the insertion of substantial
blank flanges between the boiler stop valves and piping. The shutting of a stop valve,
stop cock or automatic isolating valve alone shall not be deemed to compliance with
this Regulation. In the case of welded pipe work, however, if a vent pipe of not less
than 2" internal diameter (bore) is fitted between the main stop valve and the
intermediate stop valve on the steam main and between the feed check valve and
intermediate check valve on the feed line, this Regulation shall be considered to have
been complied with, provided such vent pipes are fitted with bolted-on blank flanges
and the flanges are removed so as to effectively discharge any leakage steam or water
to the atmosphere when the valves on either side of its have been closed.

The owner of a boiler to which this Regulation is applicable shall obtain the approval
of the Chief Inspector in writing to the method of disconnection which he proposes to
use and shall be responsible for ensuring that the method so approved is followed in
practice.

When electric light is used for work inside a Boiler shell or drum or any confined
space within a boiler, the voltage shall not exceed 24 volts and the owner of the
boiler shall provide a hand lamp with lamp-guard, keyless socket, insulated handle
and extension cord of approved type.

Where power is used for working any equipment inside a boiler the metallic
portion of the equipment shall be effectively earthed.
