ROI Return on Investment by Matthew Walsh, CDT
Welcome back, all! I hope you all have been well since we saw each other last. So it begins-a new year for the Kansas City CSI Chapter. Per usual, we have outstand- ing programs, social events, and of course The Procrasti- nators Ball, Product Expo, tours, and Golf Tournament. And its never to early to announce our year end event (yet to be named) that more or less closes us out.
Who puts all these events together? Some might as- sume they just happen. But behind the scenes, working year round on these events are our committee chairs and board members who figure out how much it costs, gauge interest, etc. Without these fine people none of this would happen. You think the president does it all? No way. And I am very fortunate to have been on a leadership ladder with some of the best this chapter of- fers, so I have big shoes to fill.
As great as the behind the scene people are, we all need help every now and again. And it takes a village, trust me. Have an idea you would like to share with the chap- ter? Find the appropriate committee member who that would fall under, and get with them. Even better, join their committee.
One thing I have learned about CSI over the years is this: a chapter is only as good as its membership. And we need our membership to get involved in order keep our chapter strong.
Regards, Matthew M Walsh, CDT Page 3

Jared Hawkins KSU 2014 CSI Scholarship Recipient (May 9, 2014)
Kansas State University I had the privilege of attending the 38 th Annual Architectural Engineering and Construction Science Awards Banquet on May 9 at K-State in Manhattan. This banquet recognizes the best and brightest students in this department. I am amazed at the number of awards and scholarships that are pro- vided by many alums of the University and this department, as well as the maturity and obvious dedication of the students, several of whom left with a handful of scholarships at the end of the evening. The recipient of this years scholarship provided by our Education Foundation is Jared Hawkins, who grew up in St. George, Kansas, a couple miles east of Manhattan. He is now completing his junior year in Construction Science and Management. Jared informed me that he is currently working 40 hours per week while maintaining a full course load on his way to graduation next Spring. Clearly, a scholarship of any amount will help him as he moves through the rest of his aca- demics.

Alexandria, Va. (August 15, 2014) CSI Foundation awards the Moll/Betts Student Excellence Awards.
The CSI Foundation is pleased to announce Nicholas Conniff, CSI-S, CDT, member of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Chapter and Farrah McCullough, CDT, have been awarded first and second place prizes in the 2014 Moll/Betts Student Excellence Award competition. The award recognizes students who earned the highest scores on CSIs Construction Docu- ments Technology (CDT) certificate exam. Both winners earned a cash scholarship and 12-month CSI Institute membership.
About the Award The Moll/Betts Student Excellence Award was established to promote the greater aware- ness of CSI to students completing studies in a construction-related educational program. To be eligible for the award, students must be enrolled at a bona fide institution of higher education in a course of study pertaining to the construction industry and sit for the CDT exam.
In addition to the student winners Mr. Conniffs school, Dunwoody College of Technology will receive a suite of CSI member-written publications compliments of John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The titles include: CSI Prac- tice Guides, the Architects Handbook of Professional Practice, and the Architectural Graphic Standards.
About the CDT CSIs CDT program has provided foundation training in construction documentation for architects, contrac- tors, contract administrators, specifiers, and manufacturers representatives for decades. As the cornerstone of CSI's certification program, it's also prerequisite to CSIs advanced certification exams: Certified Con- struction Specifier (CCS), Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA), or Certified Construc- tion Product Representative (CCPR) certification.
About the CSI Foundation The CSI Foundations mission is to conduct research, education, and recognition in the area of process im- provement of the built environment life cycle. ChapterFormat Student Chapter Fall 2014 Construction Management at JCCC
Associate Degree: We are proud to announce that we have our first graduates of the new 2-year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Construction Management from Johnson County Community College (JCCC). They completed their courses during the Spring semester and are now contributing to the construction industry. Congratulations to each of them for a job well done. Among our graduates, we had several students who have passed their CSI Construction Document Technologist (CDT) exam and also the LEED Green Associate exam. The courses at JCCC can be used as preparation for these nationally recognized certificates. We congratulate these students, as well.
LinkedIn: there is a new LinkedIn group set up especially for our students and friends of the program. Look for JCCC Construction Management and request to join. We will use this group to share job and internship opportunities for our students. The fall semester begins August 18. The enrolment numbers look good for this semester, particularly in the entry level or first semester courses. Call for Presentations: We have a goal at JCCC to have at least one guest presenter or off -campus tour sched- uled for each class. If you have a construction related presentation for our students, please let me know. We also welcome construction jobsite visits and office tours. The students really look forward to these extra events and it helps prepare them for their work career.
If you know of a construction company with job or internship openings, please contact our office. We always have students interested in making connections in the construction industry.
CONGRATULATION to the three Johnson County Community College stu- dents who passed the CDT exam. James Bigham, CDT Johathan Matejicka, CDT Farah McCullough, CDT Page 13
