(a) the domain of f,

(b) the range of f.

(c) the zeros of f.

2. Use the graph of f shown at the right to approximate

(a) the domain of f,

(b) the range of f.

(c) the zeros of f.

Finding the zeros of a function algebraically. The zeros of a function f of x are the x-values for which
f(x) = 0

3. Find the zeros of f (x) = 3x

Increasing and Decreasing Functions

The more you know about the graph of a function, the more you know about the function itself. Consider
the graph shown in figure 9. Moving from left to right,

this graph falls from x = !2 to x = 0

formally, we write the graph is decreasing on the
interval [-2,0]

however, your book always uses open intervals, but that is
not considered correct in all circles of math. Your book would write
the graph is decreasing on the interval (-2,0)

is constant from x = 0 to x = 2 and
the graph is constant on the interval [0,2]

rises from x = 2 to x = 4
the graph rises on [2,4]

Relative Minimum/Maximum Values
A function value f a ( ) is called a relative minimum of f if there exists an interval x
1
, x
2
( ) that contains a
such that x
1
< x < x
2
implies f a ( ) ! f x ( )

A function value f a ( ) is called a relative maximum of f if there exists an interval x

2
( ) that contains a
such that x

< x < x
2
implies f a ( ) ! f x ( )

Even and Odd Functions

Even functions are symmetric to the y-axis, and f !x ( ) = f x ( )
Odd functions are symmetric to the origin, and f !x ( ) = ! f x ( )
