Audis cabriolet is a drop-top delight
ITS all very well doing whatever
the inverse of a rain dance is to en-
sure plenty of time with the roof
down, but theres more to Audis A3
Cabriolet than its ability to help you
catch the suns rays.
For every one convertible you see
on the road in the summer with its
roof down I guarantee youll spot
ten with the roof in the up position.
Its a pity to waste the opportunity,
as theres the small issue of getting
your moneys worth given the pre-
mium you pay for a drop-top.
However, there are also times
when you just want to listen to the
radio in peace or, understandably,
shield yourself from the sun on a
particularly hot day.
And yes, I am one of those people
that will drive around with the roof
up on a sunny day if the mood takes
me. Sacrilege? Hardly, especially
when the A3s infotainment system
is high quality one.
Whether using the radio or the
media player inputs, navigating sta-
tions and tracks is straightforward.
Audis now familiar MMI controller
helps enormously, but the real star
is the cars large, easy to read colour
display.
The screens generous size and
high resolution also does wonders
for the navigation experience.
This particular test cars hand-
writing recognition touchpad al-
lows you to spell out words and post-
codes with an impressive success
rate, and saves a lot of time to boot.
Of course, these features arent
unique to the convertible version of
the A3, but their inclusion does help
reinforce a premium car feel.
Not that the A3 needs much assis-
tance; the high quality switchgear,
plush seats, elegant ergonomics and
refinement when on the move help
to justify the cars premium price
tag.
Observations about refinement
on the move, the A3s clever petrol
engine and its wallet-friendly fuel
economy will have to wait for an-
other time.
Needless to say, infrequent fuel
stops and a hushed engine make for
a happy driver.
