D
id you know that orangutan derives from the
Indonesian Malay word orang meaning
person and hutan meaning forest? Thus,
person of the forest!! These persons of the forest are
found in the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. So if you
are in Indonesia dont miss the opportunity to discover
the Orangutans in Kalimantan. Now I would like to share
this amazing adventure with you:
For this eco tour we were guided by Andreas Sastro and
his team, who was recommended through a friend of
mine. We took a flight by Kalstar or Trigana Air from
Jakarta to Pangkalan Bun, and from the airport we
headed to Kumai in taxi. From Kumai River we were
housed in a boat called klothok. Yes, literally housed
because this was our place to live for three days there
we ate, slept and showered, among other thingsbut
is worth the experience!! From Kumai we headed to
Tanjung Puting National Park, there you will be amazed
by the nature surrounding you, the clarity of the brilliant
crimson sunsets and the starts at nightand of course
discover the orangutans.
During the cruising in our klothok we felt pampered by the
excellent service and amazing local food served on the boat
day and night, we even had candle light dinners! During the day
we enjoyed napping by felting the breeze in our face (when the
boat was moving during day), and admired the nature that it
was hosting us, and in between day and afternoon we visited the
feeding stations and did some trekking.
The cruising in the klothok heads towards the feeding stations.
During 3 days and 2 nights we stopped at three orangutan feeding
stations. The first one we visited was on the day we arrived in
Tanjung Harapan. So as we approached the first station, we heard
the ranger calling the apes to come to eat. There, it starts the most
amazing encounter with the orangutans in their natural habitat
as they come to eat in groups. The dominant male always starts
eating first while the others stand by to let him finish. Meanwhile,
babies and females play and await to start eating.
On the second day, after morning breakfast on the boat, we went
to the second and third feeding called Camp Leakey and along this
way, we saw proboscis monkeys (long nose monkey), macaques,
fishes, and many kind of birds. Especially late afternoon is the
DA DIFFRENCE TAB June 2014 | 05
best time to admire them because is when the air freshens up as
they come to see us by the river.
Arriving at Camp Leakey, it is the orangutans research place by
Orangutan Foundation International (OFI). This organization is
making an amazing and hard work task to protect the orangutans
that sadly are endangered species. As the OFI described, factors
that are causing the decay of orangutan populations is the
devastation and degradation of their tropical rain forest habitats.
Human activities such as logging, conversion of forest to palm oil
plantations, mining, and urban expansion are major contributors
to the harm of orangutan habitat. So this is why this eco- tourism
is important because it contributes to this cause.
Although, feedings by the ranger to the orangutans may seem
a similar drill, each experience is different because every social
group of apes present distinctive behaviors. We even got lucky
to walk along one orangutan mother and baby son for about ten
minutes. She was so friendly that even allow us to be one meter
to her and her son. But be aware that orangutans are still wild
animals and is not advisable to touch them. Just admire them
and picture them, they seem to pose for you.
Definitely the entire experience of living in the klothok,
sleeping with the sound of the jungle, eating amazing local
food, picturing the colors of the jungle and the beautiful
sunsets and of course meeting the orangutans is worth
the visit!!

H
oli, Indias much-loved festival of colors, is
celebrated all over the world. Last Holi,
which fell on March 29, saw Indians and
non-Indians mix in a sea of colors at the
Jakarta Fairground (PRJ) in Kemayoran, Jakarta.
As one of the liveliest Indian festivals that symbolizes
the victory of good over evil, it traditionally brings
together people from all walks of life.
It is believed the festival originated from the story of
Prahlad, whose devotion to Lord Vishnu allowed him
to survive a burning pyre while his evil aunt Holika
died. Holi thus takes its name from Holika.
What makes celebrating Holi so popular among
youngsters and adults alike tossing colored powder,
squirting water at friends and anyone, and generally
joking around. Here in Jakarta, a group of young
entrepreneurs who call themselves Da Difference
& DKash decided to organize a celebration of this
kind.
The festival kicked off with a small crowd splashing
around in the rain. Once the sky cleared, the crowd
swelled and people from many nationalities could
be seen tossing colored powder at each other, to the
sounds of catchy tunes from Bollywood movies.
Many parents attended the event to supervise
their young children, who laughed the afternoon
away pouring buckets of colored water onto each
other. One of the participants, Mike, noted that
the celebration was able to bring about people of
different ages in one place. Mena, a middle aged
10 | DA DIFFRENCE TAB March 2014
lady, said her favorite part of the days was being
sprinkled with water. At first I was hesitant to
go under the water as I didnt want to get wet and
messy. But then I told myself I would never get an
opportunity like this again to have fun like I use to
when I was a child. So I did get plashed with colors
and sprinkled with water. When I looked at myself in
the mirror, I thought I wasnt looking that bad at all.
In fact my face was glowing from the inner joy I felt
after celebrating Holi. Deepak Dodani said there
was no difference between the rich and poor that
day. Everyone was putting colors on each other
and not minding it at all. It gave a warmth feeling
of togetherness even if it was just for a couple of
hours, he said. Celebrations vary across different
states in India.
In Mathura, where Lord Krishna grew up, the festival
is celebrated for 16 days to commemorate the love
between Krishna and Radha. It is believed Krishna,
who is of dark complexion, used to complain to his
mother about the color of his skin, because it was
so different from that of his fair-skinned girlfriend
Radha. Krishnas mother applied color on Radhas
face, which became the symbol for this festival
of love. Indians here in Indonesia may have not
celebrated Holi quite like their counterparts in their
motherland, but celebrations this year brought
a sense of belonging to each one of them. As the
organizer Da Difference & Dkash put it, Holi is a
festival that evens out all differences through colors.
This years Festival of colors, Holi Hai will be
celebrated on the open grounds of Gambir Expo, PRJ
on 23 March 2014 with loads of Exciting Games, &
Activities for All Ages.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon(s) cooking oil
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon(s) chopped fresh ginger
1 teaspoon(s) Chinese five-spice powder
1 teaspoon(s) ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon(s) cayenne
1/4 teaspoon(s) turmeric
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 cup(s) canned low-sodium chicken
broth or homemade stock
1/2 cup(s) canned unsweetened
coconut milk or heavy cream
1/2 pound(s) boiling potatoes (about 2),
peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 1/3 pound(s) boneless, skinless chicken
breasts (about 4), cut into 12-inch pieces
1/2 cup(s) chopped peanuts
1/2 pound(s) plum tomatoes
(about 4), cut into wedges
3 tablespoon(s) chopped cilantro
Method:
In a large saucepan, heat the oil over
moderately low heat. Add the onion and cook,
stirring occasionally, until it is translucent,
about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, five-
spice powder, cumin, cayenne, turmeric and
12 teaspoon of the salt. Stir until fragrant,
about 1 minute. Whisk in the broth and then
the coconut milk; bring to a simmer. Stir in the
potatoes, cover, and cook over low heat until
they are almost tender, about 12 minutes.
Add the chicken to the sauce, cover, and
simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the peanuts,
tomatoes, cilantro and the remaining
12 teaspoon salt. Turn the heat off,
cover, and let steam until the chicken is
just done, about 2 minutes longer.
Menu Suggestion: For this curry, steamed
white rice is the only accompaniment you need.
Wine Recommendation: For this bold
curry, bursting with heat, spice, and
sweetness, a fresh, aromatic white that
wont get pushed around is a chenin blanc
from the Loire Valley in France or from
California, for example, or a sauvignon
blanc from New Zealand is a good match.
