1. Informati on to Gather

When you are requested to give khutbah, make sure you ask the following questions:

! What time does the khutbah begin and end? Specifically, what is the Iqamah time for
Juma salah?

! What time do you want me to arrive at the masjid by?

! Where should I park?

! Who should I notify when I arrive?

! Who do I contact if I need any help (running late, finding the location)?

! Anything else I should know? *This alerts you if theres a major event such as a janazah,
interfaith program guests, and so on.

2. Basi c Fi qh

These are general guidelines taught in the Qalam Institute Stand & Deliver workshop. Please follow the
practices of your local masjid or imam if they hold a different opinion on these issues.

Ti mi ng The time of Juma is the same as the time of Dhuhr. There are some scholars who
allowed doing it before the time of dhuhr as a concession, but not a standard practice.

Mi ni mum Number of Peopl e There is lots of difference of opinion on this matter, we
follow the position that a congregation of 3 or more people is needed to establish Juma.

Adhan Follow the established tradition of having 2 adhans.

Fi qh of the Khutbah

Say salam before the adhan, and stand while speaking.

You must sit for the interval between the 2 khutbahs. There is no specified length, treat it as a
short pause.

Anatomy of the Khutbah

1. Praise of Allah
2. Salutation upon the Prophet (s)
3. Testimony of Faith
4. At least one ayah of Quran
5. Naseehah (Advice) Some scholars say this means a hadith of the Prophet (s) should be
read
6. Tadhkeer (Reminder)
7. Dua Make general dua for the forgiveness of all believing Muslim men and women.
The khateeb should not raise his hands during the dua.

Language of the Khutbah Follow your local masjids standard.

If your local masjid does Arabic only: The English portion (bayaan) beforehand should still be
properly delivered, and the Arabic portion should be an actual khutbah (not a ritual where the
same khutbah is read every Friday).

If your local masjid does Khutbah in English: Your khutbah is still required to have the Arabic
formalities that we listed in the Anatomy of a Khutbah section. Reciting the khutbatul-haajah at
the beginning of your khutbah will fulfill these conditions. The text for that is included in the
khutbah outline.
