Kerosene lanterns embody one of three distinct types of con-

struction: Hot-Blast; Cold-Blast; or Dead-Flame. The Cold-
Blast and Hot-Blast types are called Tubular Lanterns. In
them, the kerosene vapor, mixed with air in proper ratio, com-
poses the burning mixture. The burner acts as a carburetor to
which the side tubes convey properly controlled air in regu-
lated volume. The result is perfect combustion and bright,
clean light. Both types operate with a balanced draft which,
when tipped over, will self extinguish.

The Hot Blast principle was patented in 1868 by John Henry
Irwin, and was the first major advancement over Dead-Flame
lanterns. Hot-Blast lanterns permit a portion of the spent air
to re-circulate through the tubes, creating a brighter, more
stable flame by using the downdraft to fan the flame.

Cold-Blast lanterns first became popular in the 1890s, and
are easily the most efficient of all. They are constructed so
that only fresh, cold air enters the tubes, while all of the spent
air is diverted and expelled. (Cold-Blast lanterns provide
about twice the brightness of Hot-Blast lanterns.)

Dead-Flame lanterns date back hundreds of years, and were
originally just a simple enclosure for candles. They operate by
taking in fresh air through holes or baffles at the bottom, and
then expel spent air out the top. Tubular lanterns produce a
steadier flame and much more light than Dead-Flame lanterns.
Approved Fuels for Tubular Lanterns

1. Non-Dyed* (Clear) K1 Kerosene (Outside use only)
2. Synthetic Kerosene (*Clear-Lite)
3. Klean-Heat Kerosene Substitute
4. Standard Clear Lamp Oil (Aladdin, Crown, or Medallion)
5. Citronella Oil (Outdoor use only, mix with kerosene 50:50)
6. W.T. Kirkman Whale Brand Bio-Fuel Lamp Oil
*Dyed kerosene or lamp oil will eventually clog the wick and
inhibit proper operation. It can also permanently stain the
lamp or lantern.

Paraffin Oil is NOT designed or suitable for use in tubular
lanterns or oil lamps with 5/8 or larger wick. Paraffin oil
has a much higher viscosity, and a flash point of 200 degrees or
higher, as compared to the flash point of 150 degrees for kero-
sene. These differences inhibit the capillary action of the
wick, and will cause Lamps and Lanterns with 7/8" or lar-
ger wick to burn improperly and erratic.

NEVER USE gasoline, Coleman fuel, white gas, paint
thinner, (aka mineral spirits,) wood alcohol, naptha,
turpentine, benzene, or any other explosive fuel in a
wick lamp or lantern of any type.
USING ANY OF THE ABOVE FUELS IN A WICK LAMP
OR LANTERN CAN RESULT IN PROPERTY LOSS,
SERIOUS INJURY, OR DEATH.

OPERATION TIPS
Every Time A Lantern Comes Off a Job:

1. Inspect the globe for cracks or chips.
2. Clean the lantern, check for damage.
3. Clean the burner for even burning. Periodically
soak the burner in white vinegar if necessary.
4. Brush char off wick and clean charcoal out of
holes in burner around wick holder
5. If lantern is out and there is still fuel in it - check
wick length, replace if needed.
6. Always use 125 to 150 degree kerosene, or
regular lamp oil (Not Paraffin,) for best results.
7. Never use gasoline, paint thinner, mineral spirits,
Coleman fuel, or any other explosive oil with a wick.
8. Avoid using colored or tinted oils as they will
gum the wick and inhibit the capillary action.
7. Paraffin oil should not be used with 7/8" or larger
wick due to the difference in viscosity. (Paraffin
burns with a 50% reduction in light output.)

Electric Burner Adapters

Our electric adapters can be used with your #1 or #2 size lanterns
(with wing-lock cone burners,) without drilling or modifying the
lantern. Simply empty the tank and remove the kerosene burner
and replace it with the electric burner. To use the lantern with oil,
replace the original kerosene burner. The optional Hi-Lo switch
can extend the bulb life infinitely when used in the low setting.

The W.T. Kirkman No. 0 "Tubular" Brass Lantern is the first "tubular" hand lantern
made in the U.S.A. in over 40 years. Our goal was to produce a lantern true to the earlier
designs of the 1870's to '90's, but to also incorporate some of the later improvements,

he W. T. Kirkman No. 300 Frontier Lamp is patterned
after the Dietz and C. T. Ham street lamps introduced
in the 1880s. This type of lamp was used in the United
States into the 1920s, and could be commonly found at
railroad stations and platforms, army & cavalry bases, and
courthouse and library entrances to name just a few. The
W.T. Kirkman #300 Frontier is closer in appearance to the
original patterns than any others made in the past 50 years.

Properly Adjusted Kosmos Burner
Important Note

Oil Lamp and Lantern burners will continue to heat up
and become more efficient after lighting. Do not make
your final adjustment until after 10 minutes, or a high,
sooty flame may result.
HOW TO REPLACE WICK
To replace the wick in a Kosmos burner, first you
must remove the shade and/or chimney and then un-
screw the burner from the fount. Discard the old
wick. Insert the corners of one end of the wick
into the wick channel in the bottom of the burner,
then tilt the wick into place. Rotate the wick ad-
juster knob clockwise, making sure that both cogs
engage the wick simultaneously so that the wick
tracks evenly. Before fueling your lamp, trim the
wick by burning it DRY until it is consumed evenly to
the top of the burner tube. Allow the new wick to
completely saturate for 20 minutes before lighting.

In 1869, Auguste Gaudard set up his first die stamping shop in the Jura region of France. In 1902, a modern
factory was established in Morbier, France with 30 draw presses that were purchased in Brooklyn, New York, and
Auguste began production of his first oil lamps. The factory has now been in continuous operation under five

FUEL INFORMATION
Oil lamps with Kosmos & Matador burners can use
standard clear lamp oil (such as Medallion or Crown
Brands,) (Not Paraffin Oil or Ultra-Pure.) They can also
be used with Minimum 125 Test Clear Kerosene, or
synthetic kerosene, such as Klean-Heat or Clear-Lite.

NOTE: 99% Paraffin Oil (Ultra-Pure, Nowells,
Tropical Lights, etc.) will not burn properly in oil
lamps with a Kosmos or Matador Burner due to their
high flash point and viscosity.

QUESTION: What is the difference between Hot Blast and Cold Blast Tubular lanterns?
ANSWER: Tubular Lanterns are roughly classified under the captions "Hot Blast" and "Cold Blast." Dietz (Rhymes with
beets,) made the first "Hot Blast" Lanterns in 1868, and the first "Cold Blast" Lanterns in 1880. The terms "Hot Blast" and
"Cold Blast" are used solely in conjunction with tubular Lanterns and with regard to the method of supplying air to the flame.
All other lanterns made are classified as "Dead Flame," which are nothing more than an enclosure to protect the flame, as no air
circulation is provided. Dead Flame examples include the Adlake #300 Kero or Dietz #041 Railroad Lanterns. All Tubular Hot
Blast and Cold Blast lanterns will self extinguish if tipped over. This safety feature is not found in any other type of oil burning
lamp or lantern!

Hot Blast Lanterns are so constructed that a supply of fresh air enters the globe at the base through the openings in the perforated
globe plate. This fresh air, in ascending through the globe, becomes heated by the flame and mingles with the hot products of
combustion. A portion of this mixture of hot air and spent gases passes into the bell or canopy over the globe and through the side
tubes via downdraft to the air chamber beneath the burner, there directly supplying the flame. This design produces a steady
yellow flame. Inherent in the design of the Hot Blast Lantern, the burning time is approximately 10% greater than a Cold Blast
Lantern of the same wick size. Also, due to the re-circulating of the products of combustion, the Hot Blast Design is especially
well suited for use indoors.

Cold Blast Lanterns are so constructed that the supply of air taken through the side tubes does not mingle with the products of
combustion and the flame is supplied with fresh air both through the globe plate and the side tubes. The spent products of com-
bustion escape to the outer air through a central metal chimney in the Lantern head. From an air chamber surrounding the metal
chimney, which is provided with injectors for taking in fresh air. The fresh air is then taken into the side tubes where it then flows
to the lower air chamber and thus to the burner. The "Cold Blast" Lantern design produces a perfectly white flame and approxi-
mately twice the volume of light of a "Hot Blast" Lantern with the same size wick. This fact has rendered the "Cold Blast"
Lantern a favorite with users. With the advent of modern fuels, Cold Blast lanterns can be used inside or out.

QUESTION: How do I change the wick in my lantern?
ANSWER: First you must remove the globe and then the burner. Discard the old wick after removing it from the burner. Trim
the new piece of wick straight across, then apply 1/4 " of a 3" strip of masking tape to one end of the wick, and fold the tape back
onto itself and wick, making a 1 1/4" long leader. Trim the masking tape to the width of the wick, and insert it into the underside
of the burner using it to guide the wick. Once the wick is through the burner remove the tape and re-trim the wick straight across
if necessary. This method can also be used for round wick using a narrow strip of masking tape as a leader.

QUESTION: How safe are tubular lanterns? Can I use them indoors?
ANSWER: Contrary to Hollywood propaganda, tubular lanterns are infinitely safer than any other non-electric artificial light
source. If a tubular lantern is tipped over, the balanced draft cuts off the air supply to the burner and extinguishes the flame
within seconds. With the advent of modern lamp oil and synthetic kerosene, both Hot Blast and Cold Blast lanterns are well
suited for indoor use in ventilated areas. Since the design of a Hot Blast lantern re-circulates spent air to the burner for more
complete combustion, it has a slight edge over the Cold Blast Design, and a 10% greater efficiency rating. For light output how-
ever, cold blast lanterns remain the best choice.

QUESTION: How do I stop a tubular lantern from leaking oil from the air tube?
ANSWER: In use, lantern wick conducts heat into the oil, this in turn creates expansion, and will cause oil to overflow into the
air chamber under the burner if the lantern has been overfilled. Once this happens, the oil will leak out of the joints where the air
tubes go into the air chamber above the tank. To prevent this, only fill the lantern to just under the fuel spout threads. Use a
small white plastic kitchen funnel to more easily see the fuel level when filling. As a precaution, place the lantern in a shallow
pan when re-fueling. If overfilling occurs, empty some of the fuel.

QUESTION: How do I stop a tubular lantern from leaking from the tank?
(NOTE: Take all safety precautions, use rubber gloves, safety glasses, etc.)
ANSWER: Remove the burner and fuel cap, and empty the oil completely. Drop a 1' piece of "Sash" chain into the tank and
pour in one cup of white vinegar. Swish the vinegar and chain around to knock down the heaviest rust or crud. Drain the tank,
and allow to dry in the sun, or use a blow dryer on low to completely evaporate all of the vinegar. Remove the chain and make
sure that there is nothing left in the tank like a piece of wick. If there are visible holes in the tank, use masking tape to cover
them. Put on a pair of disposable gloves, then use a funnel to carefully pour into the tank enough U.S. Standard POR-15 Gas
Tank Sealer or Spar Varnish to coat the entire inside. Rotate the lantern to thoroughly coat both the bottom and sides of the
inside of the tank. If you get any on the fuel spout or burner cup be sure to clean it off. After it cures in a few days, another coat
can be added if the condition of the tank warrants it. Let the lantern cure for one full week, remove the masking tape and put the
lantern back into service. This method of re-sealing will usually last the life of the lantern.
