Report from the Grand Council
Ultmately, the Grand Council
seemed to agree that changing a word
would not be enough to put an end to
hazing in our Fraternity. Southern
Indiana was in agreement with this
sentment.
Afer extensive debate, it was
moved by Grand Consul Greenberg to
send the measure to a commitee for
further revisions. The issue will be
brought before the Grand Chapter next
summer. Untl then, the Grand Council
has been charged with using the infor-
maton we
gained to
begin the
process of
educatng our
Provinces on
the issue of
hazing.
Jon Andrews 14, Grand Council
This year, Chi Chapter has
been awarded a Peterson Signif-
cant Chapter Award at the 2014
Balfour Leadership Training Work-
shop. This is the second year in a
row that Chi Chapter has received a
Peterson. Before last year, Chi
Chapter had not received a Peter-
son since 1998. All the hard work
and dedicaton of our brothers in
beginning to be recognized and is
an encouraging sign for the chapter,
and shows the tremendous im-
provement in recent years for Chi
Chapter.
Although this is the second year
in a year row being awarded the
Peterson Signifcant Chapter Award,
it was no easy task to come to this
point. By maintaining the highest
Greek GPA on campus, it showed
our thirst for excellence in academic
maters. Also members became
involved with leadership positons
in student organizatons, and most
importantly greater exemplifed the
values of our Fraternity. All the
strides and struggles to improve di
d not go un-notced by the interna-
tonal Fraternity, and it shows that
we are a model for other chapters
to turn to analyze themselves.
Strong leadership is exemplifed
as well through strong followership,
all our chapter Brothers took part in
making the Peterson award become
a tangible possibility. Those who
were not in ofcer positons took to
logging philanthropy hours, taking a
more actve role in our Pledgeship
process, and becoming involved in
student organizatons. One of our
chapter members was even elected to
the presidency of the college Mortar
Board honor society chapter. These
examples are a small sample of what
our chapter has done to contnue
building upon our historic reputaton
within the Fraternity, but they reso-
nate with the theme that we are on a
path to bigger and beter things.
I wish I could have been in atend-
ance to receive the award, but the
award itself will have to sufce. The
award is a physical embodiment of the
progress we have made as a chapter in
recent years by breathing new life into
Chi Chapter. Although there were
hurdles along the way, and there will
contnue to be, we must overcome
them and press on and constantly
strive perfecton. We are prepared for
the future and will contnue to increase
the strength of our Brotherhood.
This year, I had the honor of
joining the ranks of the Sigma Chi
Grand Council, the governing body
that convenes biennially, as the
delegate from Southern Indiana.
Convening in Skokie, IL on June
27, we were faced with a very im-
portant piece of fraternity legisla-
ton: discontnuing the use of the
word pledge. Even in todays
modern era of Greek Life, hazing is
stll present in many chapters. By
introducing this measure, Grand
Consul Mike Greenberg hoped to
help put an end to those practces.
To help guide the Grand Council
in their decision, the Jordan Inita-
tve Commitee organized an exper-
imental actvity that forced council
members to confront all forms of
hazing. Not just the kind we see on
the news , but also less notceable
forms that include mental hazing,
forced servitude, and similar prac-
tces.
The council members spent
nearly four hours partcipatng in
actvites and intensive discussions
on the issue of hazing. The experi-
ence, for me was truly eye-opening.
While Chi Chapter was innocent of
the hazing practces we worked to
eliminate, other chapters in atend-
ance came to the realizaton that
many of their common, seemingly
harmless practces, were found to
be unacceptable.
When the Grand Council recon-
vened the next morning, it was
clear that the tone had been afect-
ed by the hazing experiences. Stll, a
very heated debate on the mater
of eliminatng the word pledge
took place.

Derby Days Impresses!
Philanthropy is something the
Sigma Chi Fraternity takes to heart.
Derby Days is a traditon of the Sigma
Chi Fraternity and Chi Chapter. All of
the money raised during the week of
Derby Days is donated to the Hunts-
man Cancer Foundaton . Last year
was a huge success for Chi Chapters
Derby Days, this year the momentum
kept rolling.
For this years Derby Days along
with holding mini games for the so-
rorites to take part in while raising
money, t-shirts were also sold. Not
only did this provide a means to raise
more money, but it also advertsed
the event and allows us to remember
the week years down the line.
Under the guidance of Derby Days
Chairman, Mathew Perkins 14, Chi
Chapter showed similar results as
last years Derby Days with numbers
eclipsing 100 girls each day.
The events this year kicked of
Monday, April 28, and contnued
throughout the week. The sororites
partcipated in a sing of, a volley-
ball tournament, a water balloon
fght, and catch-a-Sig.
From the frst three events
alone, the we were able to raise
over $600. This was quite the feat
considering this number was
achieved just from the days events
and not the money raised from shirt
sales.
Speaking of shirt sales, Chi Chap-
ter was able to raise of $1000 and
allowed for a grand total of $4000
which went toward the Huntsman
Woody Harrelson visits Hanover and Chi Chapter
Whenever Brother Woody
Harrelson 83 made his return
to campus , the school was
buzzing with excitement.
Harrelson received an honor-
ary doctor of human leters
degree from Hanover College
during a ceremony held on
March 29, 2014. The ceremo-
ny was flled with excitement
as this distnguished Hanover
and Sigma Chi alumnus was
praised for his decades of
stage work and screen actng
along side his philanthropic
work.
The weekend of Brother
Harrelsons arrival was quite
hectc for the school and Chi
Chapter. I-Week was coming
to a close, a philanthropy
event was going to take
place on Saturday night, and
preparatons for a very im-
portant alumnus on top of
that made things very dif-
cult. However, the weekend
was
a great success and it was
amazing to the see the re-
turn of a few dozen alumni
coming to celebrate the init-
aton of new members into
Chi Chapter. Upon his arri-

val Woody met and shook
hands with everyone. Right
afer his welcoming, Harrelson
was presented with gifs from
our sweetheart Kaitlyn Knapp.
To show his appreciaton, he
lead everyone in singing the
infamous Sweetheart of Sigma
Chi song to Knapp. Soon afer
this was the ceremony for Har-
relson to receiver his honorary
doctorate. The ceremony was
well thought out with a hysteri-
cal speech by former theater
department head Dr. Tom Ev-
ans and with a very honest and
sincere speech by Harrelson .
Overall, it was great see Har-
relson back on campus and we
eagerly await his return to
Hanovers campus.
Day One of Derby Days with all the Sorority Participants
Cancer Foundaton.
Even though each and every
one of the sororites gave it their all
into the Derby Days events, the
end result was a three way te for frst.
The ladies of Phi Mu, Chi Omega, and
Alpha Delta Pi proved that were all the
winners of the 2014 Derby Days Com-
petton.

Chapter Eternal
All of us at Chi Chapter were
deeply saddened by the sudden,
unexpected passing of our dear
brother, Kris Kindelsperger.
He was born on October 31,
1949, in Syracuse, New York, to
Kenneth and Bernis Kindelsperger,
who preceded him in death. He
received a Doctorate in Higher
Educaton Administraton from
Indiana University, a Master's in the
same feld from the University of
Louisville, and Bachelor's in History
from Hanover College. He married
his college sweetheart, Roxie in
1972 .
He spent his last 14 years working
as a Senior Executve Consultant at
Johnson, Grossnickle and Associ-
ates, a philanthropic consultant
group. Previously, he was the Vice
President of Development at Hano-
ver College.
Brother Kindelsperger generously
gave his tme and energy to the
Sigma Chi General Fraternity as a
chapter advisor for 18 years, as an
ongoing volunteer; Girls Inc. of
Jeferson County as a Board Mem-
ber and Past President; and Turning
Point Domestc Violence Services in
Columbus, Indiana, as a Board
Member, Past President, and Chair-
man of the Development Com-
mitee. Kris was a past Board Mem-
ber and member of the Resource
Development Commitee for the
Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.
Finally, he was Founding Vice Presi-
dent of the board and a 10-year
member of the Community Founda-
ton of Madison and Jeferson Coun-
ty. Professionally he was a member
of CASE V and AFP.
He was a loving husband, father,
grandfather, and faithful member of
First United Methodist Church where
he served on various commitees. He
enjoyed playing golf, working in the
yard, and spending tme with his
grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Roxie;
children, Sara (Mat) Canterbury of
Columbus, Ohio and Nick (Abby) of
Chicago, Illinois; two grandchildren,
Zac and Mira; and a brother, Bren
(Glenda) of Spring Grove, Pennsylva-
nia.
Chi Chapter will be conductng a
public memorial service for Brother
Kindelsperger on September 20
(Homecoming) at the chapter fre pit.

New Tribune of Chi Chapter
When I came to Hanover College,
I had no intentons of joining a
fraternity. Media is a major infu-
ence on most people, including
myself, and the media gave me a
negatve view towards fraternites
and sororites. As you can tell by
me becoming the new Tribune of
Chi Chapter something changed
along the way. Mathew Perkins
14 succeeded in blowing all my
previous negatve connotatons of
Greek life out of the water.
For most of my life, I have been
the quiet kid in the classroom but
would be absolutely insane when
with my friends. When I arrived at
Hanover, we were placed into a PA
group based on our Great Works
class. My PA was Mathew Perkins
14, and he was really outgoing and
enthusiastc about Hanover and
Greek Life.
He encouraged each of us to go
to each of the houses to at least
give it a chance and see if Greek
Life would be something that
piqued our curiosity. Sigma Chi was
the house that I felt true brother-
hood in, because in many of the
other houses their seemed to be a
disconnect amongst many brothers.
Some of them would actvely avoid
each other, which made it feel like
living in a dorm again.
However at Sig, the brothers all
appeared to get along with one
another and this bond that could be
physically seen. The high stand-
ards and values of the Sigma Chi
Fraternity played a huge factor in
deciding whether or not I would
rush, but the biggest factor was the
brothers and alumni. I was sur-
prised to fnd people like myself on
small campus, such as Hanovers,
and the fact that they were all in
one house together made it all the
more compelling.
Afer becoming a member of Sigma
Chi, I knew that I wanted to have a role
in the fraternity to put my ideas out
there and gain experience in working
with others. So I decided to take the
role as Tribune, to get a beter under-
standing of what it means to be a mem-
ber of this fraternity. My role as the
Tribune of Chi Chapter is to facilitate
discussions between undergraduates and
alumni.
Last year, Jonathon Andrews 16,
introduced this newsleter to beter
refect the high standards of the Sigma
Chi fraternity and allow for a medium to
release fraternal informaton.
Any alumnus can feel free to make
suggestons for artcles whether they be
hilarious tales from the past or serious
topics of a marriage or a death.

Renovations for Chi Chapter House!
This Summer has been an
extremely busy tme for Chi
Chapter. As you may now, our
house is quite old and was in
need of repairs. Due to the great
efciency of our chapter this past
year, the funds were available to
tackle areas inside and outside
the house that could beneft the
most from renovatons. Below
are just a few photos of the hard
work and efort put in by broth-
ers, our house dad, and hired
help to breathe new life into our
chapter house. A big thanks to
our Housing Corporaton Presi-
dent Jef Tucker, whom made
these renovatons a possibility.
The top right photo is of
the 2nd foor bathroom that was in
desperate need of some atenton.
The room was repainted in Old Gold
and white, which refects the colors
of our chapter and allows the room
to gain some vibrancy. The vents,
as seen on the sink counter, have
been repainted along with new light
fxtures. For those who had seen
this bathroom the same tme last
year, Im sure you can appreciate
this change.
The top phot on the lef shows
the 1st foor bathroom painted and
styled in the same manner as the
2nd foor restroom.
n the middle and botom lef
pictures, is the 2nd foor hallway.
This hallway sees the most use in
the house, therefore it was be-
ginning to look very rundown.
The carpet was stripped up and
re carpeted. The wood paneling
on the sides and the door frames
have all been painted cream.
The walls have been painted in
Old Gold just like the bathrooms.
The new carpet and paint have
given this hallway a completely
new image, and will show to
others how important out house is to us.
On the botom right is a photo of the
lobby, which was in prety good shape
and a litle bit of paint makes the room
very welcoming of anyone who enters
our home. A big thanks to everyone
who helped with these amazing revoca-
tons, and I hope you come see them!
