By now, the story of his journey has been well document- ed, how he went from being undrafted out of Penn State to being out of football and working as a personal trainer before going to Canada, starring in the CFL and eventually becom- ing a success with the Miami Dolphins. At the root of the story is Wakes dedication to nutrition and fitness, a dedication that borders on fanatical. That has been one constant with Wake from the time he was a sophomore in college, and his commitment never wavered even through the disappointments of his football career. And that certainly hasnt changed now that Wake has firm- ly established himself as one of the top pass rushers in the NFL, a player good enough to be named by his peers as one of the leagues top 100 players three different times. Maybe if I was working in a different avenue or I took a different path in life, it wouldnt be a big deal, Wake explains. But this is my vessel, this is how I make my money, how I make my living, how I achieve my goals. You have a Ferrari, youre not going to just throw any kind of motor oil or anything in it, youre going to find the best that you can find to make sure that engine runs to the peak performance. And I want to get the peak performance and cheeseburgers and potato chips and sodas, thats not going to maximize my effort. I kind of cut out whatever I can that doesnt translate into peak performance. Being my engine, I max out every time. While a bit small for his position by NFL standards, Wake is a powerhouse. He is, as the saying goes, cut and a running joke around his teammates is how much he likes to walk around without a shirt or with a half-shirt to show off an abdomen without even a hint of flabbiness. This is a guy who, time and time again, answers the ques- tion about his favorite snack with grapes. For Wake, its always been about making the sacrifices necessary to succeed, and that certainly hasnt changed over the years. Its funny how things kind of transition, Wake says. As Ive gotten more wisdom in the game and some of the young guys are coming up to me and asking me, Hey, what do you do in the offseason? Or, What do you eat? (Im) starting to kind of grab guys and say, listen, how badly do you want that interception? How badly do you want that sack or that touch- See WAKE, page 12 9,10,11,12-WAKE FEATURE 9/1/14 6:31 PM Page 2 DOLPHINS VS. PATRIOTS | 11 Cameron Wake is coming off his third Pro Bowl season, and he credits his success to taking care of his body. 9,10,11,12-WAKE FEATURE 9/1/14 6:31 PM Page 3 12 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK down? Is it worth not eating that cheese- burger and having a chicken sandwich or a salad? Instead of putting four hours into that video game, maybe playing for 30 minutes and going out and doing some extra run- ning or studying on that playbook. Because it could be that one thing that you notice from your studies and your play- book or that one extra rep or that salad that gives you that one inch that creates that sack or that interception or that touchdown, (and) in this game you know that one inch, that one foot that you can gain can make a difference in the game and the difference in a season. Wake has made a significant difference since signing with the Dolphins in January of 2009. He recorded 51.5 sacks in his first five seasons in the NFL, already putting him sev- enth on the Dolphins all-time list. He also made the Pro Bowl three times in those five seasons, including 2013 when a knee injury limited him for a few games and even forced him to have to sit out a game for the first time in his career he was inac- tive for his first two games in a Dolphins uni- form, but that was because the coaches felt he wasnt yet ready to help the defense. I probably would say last year might have been my toughest year I played so far, Wake said. Knock on wood, Ive been blessed or fortunate, lucky, however you want to look at it, not to be injured. Ive never really had to deal with anything. Football, I get hurt every game. Everybody gets hurt. But injuries, Ive never had any- thing until (last) year. I noticed that it was a blessing and a curse at the same time to have the kind of mentality that I have, that I dont care if I have one leg, I want to play. But then I have to say, hey, listen, maybe this is not the best thing to do. Maybe your backup can play better than you. Maybe for the team its best that you sit down, even though deep inside of you all I want to do is go out there and do whatever I can. There were games where I wasnt up to par, to the normal Cameron Wake that most people have seen. Having said that, still being looked at as one of the premier guys in the league and being selected to the Pro Bowl was truly an honor. It was just more validation for the sacri- fices he made in college when he gave up fast food, gave up parties and dedicated himself to doing everything he could to make himself a professional athlete. But the work never ends. Wake has come too far to even think about starting to take it easy. Besides, he actually enjoys that part of the job. I like it, he says. I like that and I actu- ally love watching the results. I love going out there and putting an extra 5 pounds on that bench or that squat that last week I know I couldnt do or running that gasser or that conditioning test knowing last week I came in 2 seconds later and Im making progress. In my mind, I know every time I do that, that extra 5 pounds, thats going to benefit me when the lights come on on Sunday. WAKE, from page 10 I like (working out). I like that and I actually love watching the results. 9,10,11,12-WAKE FEATURE 9/1/14 6:31 PM Page 4 3-BALL WATCH AD 8/21/14 7:53 PM Page 1 14 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN TODAYS GROUPS | QUICK HITTERS | CONNECTIONS | TODAYS MATCH 360 Access AARP ABM One Site Services Ackels, Edward Ackerman, Jennifer Aiello, George Akladious, Irene Alan Hochman Tours Alicandro, Joe All Star Recruiting Alpha-Omega Training and Compliance, Inc. The Dolphins went 2-1 in the first three, with victories in 1994 (39- 35) and 1996 (24-10). Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline has recorded at least four catches in his last six games against New England. Five of Tom Bradys seven worst career starts in terms of passing yardage came against the Dolphins. Cameron Wake has recorded a sack in each of the last four Dolphins-Patriots games at Sun Life Stadium. The game will mark the first time the Dolphins have faced New England in a September afternoon game since 2000. The Dolphins won that game, 10-3, on their way to the AFC East title. 17-GAME PLAN - QUICK HITTERS 9/1/14 6:27 PM Page 1 18 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN CONNECTIONS | TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME Dolphins defensive tackle A.J. Francis (on injured reserve) spent time during the 2013 season on the New England practice squad. Patriots offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo served in the same role with the Dolphins from 2009-11. Patriots special teams coach Scott OBrien spent two seasons with the Dolphins (2005-06) as coordinator of foot- ball operations/assistant to the head coach. Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll served as offensive coordinator for the Dolphins in 2011. Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich played in four games for Miami in 2007 and one more in 2008. Patriots wide receiver Brian Tyms (reserve/suspended list) spent part of the 2013 season on the Dolphins practice squad. New England offensive lineman Chris Barker went to training camp with the Dolphins in 2013 before being released and then claimed off waivers by the Patriots. 18-GAME PLAN-CONNECTIONS 9/1/14 6:26 PM Page 1 22-BONEFISH GRILL 8/21/14 7:51 PM Page 1 20 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME New England a difficult opening test By ALAIN POUPART @apoupartFins Teams in the AFC East have been chasing the New England Patriots for the past sever- al years, and the Dolphins will find out right away how they measure up in 2014. The Dolphins along with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills are hoping to end New Englands five-year run as division cham- pion, but it wont be an easy task because the Patriots still have most of the elements that have helped them achieve their recent suc- cess. It starts with Head Coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, of course, but the Patriots also went into the season having added Darrelle Revis, widely considered one of the best cornerback in the league since he arrived as a first-round pick of the Jets in 2007. New England also will be helped by the return in the lineup of defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo, who both missed the second half of the 2013 sea- son because of injuries. And then theres tight end Rob Gronkowski, who the Patriots hope will be ready for the season opener after he underwent knee surgery late last season. The Dolphins split their season series with the Patriots last season, but both games eas- ily could have gone either way. Miami squandered a 17-3 lead in the first meetings at Gillette Stadium in late October before coming back for a stirring 24-20 victo- ry at Sun Life Stadium in mid-December thanks to a late touchdown by Marcus Thigpen and a game-clinching interception by defensive back Michael Thomas in the end zone. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill and Brady both put up big passing numbers in the December contest in South Florida, but Miami also has done as good a job on Brady through the years as just about any team in the entire NFL. The Dolphins defense returns most of the starters from last years group and will need a big performance to contain a New England offense that figures to be improved at wide receiver after featuring a couple of rookies in 2013. The Patriots offensive line will be adjust- ing to life without former Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins, who was traded to Tampa Bay in late August. On the other side of the ball, the Dolphins will be looking for their new offense to get off to a strong start against a Patriots defense that has proven opportunistic over the last several years. Afer opening the season 3-0 in 2013, a second consecutive season-opening victory would provide a huge boost for the Dolphins. Head Coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots have enjoyed quite a run over the last several years. 20-MATCHUPS 9/1/14 6:32 PM Page 1 DOLPHINS VS. PATRIOTS | 21 GAME PLAN LAST TIME The Dolphins improved to 8-6 on the sea- son after Ryan Tannehill hit running back Marcus Thigpen with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter. DB Michael Thomas, signed just five days earlier, sealed the victory for the Dolphins when he intercepted Tom Brady in the end zone on a fourth-and-5 from the Miami 14- yard line with 7 seconds left. Tannehill tied his season high with three TD passes and had a season-best 120.6 passer rating. The turning point came when the Dolphins cut into New Englands 10-0 lead with an 82-yard drive in the final 1:31 of the first half, the touchdown coming on a 39-yard pass from Tannehill to Mike Wallace. What are your thoughts on the chal- lenge of opening the season against the New England Patriots? I think our players, our staff, our fans, youre looking in the AFC East, you start with the New England Patriots. Thats a great way to start the season. Its great to get them at home in September at 1 oclock. I think its going to be an absolutely great way to open the season. Q. How big of a tone-setter could this game become for the Dolphins? Weve been talking to the team about starting fast this season and getting off to a good start. Its an AFC game, its a division game, its a home game. Youve kind of got all three wrapped into one and you want the season to start on a positive note, so absolutely I think its important that we play very, very well. Q. Is the challenge in facing the Patriots pretty much try to stop Tom Brady? They have a good football team all the way around. Their special teams are good, their defense is good. (Vince) Wilfork is back. A lot of the guys that they had are back. (Darrelle) Revis is in the fold playing well. And (Tom) Brady is still throwing the ball extremely well. Shane Vereen has been very, very productive in the preseason. Theyve scored a lot of points. Its going to be a chal- lenge, without a doubt. Q. The Dolphins recorded a stirring victo- ry against the Patriots the last time they came to Sun Life Stadium; will you bring up that game as you pre- pare for this years season opener? I think most of them remember. Well see. But were really focused on this year and get- ting off on a great start. Thats really the most important thing. Q: Is your preference usually to use your running backs on a series-by-series basis or rotate them within the same series? It all depends. Each and every one, yes, yes, yes. Again, if I said, I want this guy to get three series, then he busts off a 32-yard run and he banged off of four guys and he looks a little tired, we are going to get some- body else in there. Its hard to say. We always have a target of how many play snaps we would love this particular player to get, espe- cially a skill player. But it doesnt always work out that way and you kind of have to coach with your eyes. You have a plan going in and you have to see. If hes tired, lets get some- body else in. If hes really on a roll, he looks fresh and he keeps going, keep riding him. Ive seen both. Ive done both and Im not afraid to do either one. Q. How much has new defensive tackle Earl Mitchell impressed you in the run game? I like everything hes done since the day hes gotten here, to be quite honest with you. Hes a football player through and through. He comes out to the practice field every single day and works his tail off. Hes a good guy in the locker room. The players respect him. I think hes making good progress. Hes making a nice contribution. Hes a football player. He works on the funda- mentals, good person, really high on him. Q. Was first-round pick JaWuan James getting more snaps on the offensive line than anybody else in the presea- son something that was planned all along? No, it wasnt planned. We felt like he needed some work and needed some repe- titions. I think, by and large, weve kind of accomplished that and were happy that hes gotten the reps that he has. Weve seen steady improvement. DOLPHINS VS. During that era, his offense ranked in the top 10 in points scored and total yards every season. In five seasons at the helm of the Packers prolific offense, the team scored 2,263 points (third in the NFL during that span). In 2011, the Packers set franchise records for victories (15), points (560) and total yards (6,357). The 560 points ranked second in NFL history. PATRIOTS | 51 The home opener is always something special. Its the first time that you as a player get to play in front of all your fans, and put on a show for the people that support you. Its the time to put on a performance to remember, and also set the tone for your season. Now, most players get a little overwhelmed their first home opener, but for me, that wasnt exactly the case. Its weird because the whole thing about me was that everyone was saying that youre going to be playing in front of 75,000-80,000 people, but I was used to play- ing in front of 100,000 at Penn State. So I wasnt too nervous stepping out on that field for my first-ever home opener in 1993 against the New York Jets, well, at least when it came to the amount of fans in the stands. I truly didnt get the full feel of a home opener until I was a member of pregame introductions however, and that was around my third season. Coming through that tunnel of teammates was exhilarating. Every time I did that, it was exciting. There was no feeling like it. I had never had that happen before because at Penn State, we didnt do that. The lights didnt shine on individual players down in Happy Valley. But coming through that tunnel, and that tunnel of teammates is something that Ill never forget. That gets you going right away, and even gets you going too much sometimes, too, because you get so hyped. When all the pregame hype is over with, though, its time to get down to business. The home opener is the game that creates the vibe around your team for the sea- son. Its the tone-setter. Its incredibly important to start off the home schedule with a win because the first win is always the toughest win. Its always the most important, especially when youre playing a divisional opponent like we are in the New England Patriots. You want to be able to have a home-field advantage at your stadium; you want to go 6-2, 7-1, or 8-0 at home. So the first one is extremely cru- cial to get under your belt, and this season, its even more important because of our opponents. Playing against New England to start off the year, a team that has dominated our division 11 out of the past 13 years gives you even more motiva- tion. We want to be able to break that decade of dominance. Splitting with them last year was one thing, but sweeping them would give us the edge and confi- dence to eventually dethrone them from the top. Getting off to a great start, especially against Brady and them, is para- mount to success this season. During my career, I was lucky to have a team and team- mates that were good enough to post an outstanding 8-1 home-opener record. Personally, though, I believe that no matter what, you should always win the first game at home because all the odds are stacked in your favor. Its a game you pay extra attention to. Its in September, so its extremely hot down here still while most teams arent used to that, and youre ready to play while other teams are still trying to adjust to the environment. We always wore white and we usually played a 1 p.m. game, so the other team was always in dark uniforms. You could see it in the skill players and the big men up front, you could see it in their sideline, and how the heat would cause them to fade at times. It gets to them and creates openings to strike, and hopefully that plays to our advantage this year. We were always primed and ready for that home open- er, and I think this team will be as well. You never missed a game in your eight seasons. Not a single game. Whats the secret? DC: A whole lot of hard work. A whole lot of luck. A whole lot of stubborness. You cant always play this game at 100 percent, but I guess Ive been lucky enough to do it. My injuries have come close to bye weeks. I always felt I have a responsibility to my team- mates and coaches to be out there. If there is any way, Im going to play. I fractured my leg last year and kept playing. The first couple of weeks I strug- gled with it, but by Week 4 it kind of numbed up on me and I was fine. 2. You played for Joe Philbin when he was offensive line coach and offen- sive coordinator of the Packers? Is he much different today as head coach of the Dolphins? DC: From a lowly offensive line coach to head coach of the Dolphins, he has- nt changed a whole lot. Hes always a man of principle and thats what he is today. Hes the kind of guy who wants to do it the right way every time and I think he ingrained that in a bunch of young guys, including me. Hes a big rea- son I have never missed a game. He always said do the right thing because its the right thing to do. 3. What are the things you bring to this offensive line? DC: Ive always been a intelligent player. Ive never been the flashiest or the fastest. Ive never been the strongest. I find myself in the right position a lot. Im good at reading defenses and Im on the field all the time. If Im going to be here at the beginning of the year, then you should feel confident Ill be here at the end of the year. 4. There are five new starters on this line. How imposing a challenge is that? By ANDY COHEN 56 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 56,57-TEN QUESTIONS 9/1/14 6:24 PM Page 1 DC: Its harder on the outside than it is on the inside. Depending on the lineup we have out there, we have a lot of experience on the offensive line. Ive got a good rap- port with the tackles. Coaches are going to keep rotating guys. By Week 3, I think we will have settled into a clear starting five. Then weve got to stay healthy the whole season. If we can keep five guys on the field healthy, we have a chance to be a special offensive line, and I really mean that. 5. Toughest guy you ever blocked, and why? DC: (Laugh). Its such a clich, but the toughest guy you go up against every day is yourself. But to answer your question, there are so many talented guys out there. I played against Tommie Harris in his prime. I played against Vince Wilfork in his prime. Kyle Williams in Buffalo is so tough. It is so hard these days, you go up against an All- Pro every week. And the guy who isnt an All-Pro is trying to become one. 6. Tell us some things about yourself? What are your passions? What are you like away from football? DC: Im a big adventure guy. I like scuba diving. I like flying. Im a snowboarder. I like to ski. Im as active as I can be. Ive got a passion for wine. Me and a couple of bud- dies who played in Green Bay own a small wine label. Ive got a bunch of hobbies. Im kind of eclectic. 7. Ryan Tannehill was sacked 58 times last season. Are there any assurances you can give to Dolphins fans about the pro- tection Tannehill will receive this season? DC: Everybody guarantees its going to be better. We have a better scheme. Ryan is more aware. As an offensive line, we cant allow 50 sacks. That cant happen. Were going to get the ball out faster. Were going to protect better. Everybody is going to do a better job and well have a better running game, which will take some of the pressure off Ryan. 8. You attended North Pole High School in Alaska. The butt of jokes? DC: Its just like you think it would be. Its North Pole, Alaska. We have candy cane light poles. We have Santa Claus every- where. It was a great place to grow up as a kid with all the fishing, hunting and camp- ing. I dont know if Ill ever live there again because its a place all on its own, but it was special growing up there. 9. You are 32 years old. How much longer will your body and mind allow you to play? DC: I really dont know. Thats a question youve got ask yourself every time you go to camp. During the offseason you think you can play five more years. Then by the end of the first week of camp you think you can play only five more days. Its tough to tell. Very rarely does a guy get to choose his destiny in this league. You just go out and work hard and then one day someone will tap you on the shoulder and say youre done. Until that day comes, Ive got enough to keep going. 10. Youve played with some very good teams. You played on a Super Bowl champion. What do you think is the real potential of this Dolphins team? DC: This team can make the playoffs. There is no doubt in my mind. Any team that can make the playoffs always has a chance. Dont forget, my Super Bowl team in Green Bay was a wild-card team. We have a great defense here. Who is the toughest offen- sive lineman you have faced? Thatd be Nate Solder. You know how they say Tom Brady, he doesnt take a lot of sacks. Its because of his protection, and guys like Solder. Hes big, tall, and really good with his hands. 2. Who sets the bar at your position? Its Cam Wake. Every time in practice, every time in games, he makes plays that I and everyone else want to be able to make. Seeing his work ethic day in and day out is really something. Off the field he conducts himself very well as well. 3. What player did you admire growing up? I admired Sean Taylor and Ray Lewis. I was thinking before high school that I would be play- ing safety, so that was the posi- tion I was going to play. So Id always watch clips of him all the time because he was so physical. It was just plain fun watching him. And then Ray Lewis, when he was with the Ravens hed just control the whole defense. I just loved watching him and Sean play. 4. What has been the most memorable moment of your career? It would have to be when I got my first touchdown during my rookie year on a blocked punt against the Jets. I didnt think that I would get a touchdown my rookie year, I dont think anybody that goes out there and plays defensive line especially expects to score, especially in their rookie year. That was something that was really special. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? I would say (Dolphins defensive line coach) Kacy Rodgers. Its the first coach that Ive had for more than one year and I just learn so much from him as far as using my hands and learning how to read the offense and learning how to study film. Hes a great teacher and one of the best coaches out there. CURRENT PLAYER: OLIVIER VERNON 70 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 70,71-MY GENERATION 9/1/14 6:47 PM Page 1 1. Who was the toughest offensive line- man you faced? I saw my share of some really good ones, but Jonathan Ogden was by far the best. Big, strong, athletic there is a good rea- son hes in the Hall of Fame! 2. Who set the bar at your position? Reggie White and Bruce Smith, hands down. You are talking nearly 400 sacks between two guys, which is just unreal. Both of them took over games and shut down offenses single-handedly. 3. What player did you admire growing up? Michael Jordan. I know Mike didnt play football, but his greatness transcended his sport. I think that his commitment to his craft, his professionalism, his style and his level of dominance inspired athletes across all sports. 4. What was the most memorable moment of your career? Its really tough to single one out. Being drafted was special; starting my first game; playing with Dan Marino; all of the wins. But being carried off the field by my teammates after WINNING my final game was some- thing Ill always be humbled and amazed by. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? George Novak and Jimmy Johnson. Coach Novak was my high school coach at Woodland Hills in Pittsburgh. I had never even played football before he approached me while I was doing some yard work. Coach convinced me to try out for the team and literally taught me the game, because I had no clue! I will always be grateful. And of course Jimmy! Jimmy believed in my abili- ties coming out of Akron and he gave me the chance to play, and play early. FORMER PLAYER: JASON TAYLOR DOLPHINS VS. PATRIOTS | 75 THE LAST WORD BY ANDY COHEN To understand how Bill Lazor got to where he is today, as offensive coordi- nator of the Miami Dolphins, you have to first go back to Oct. 12, 1991. Lazor was an untested sophomore quarterback at Cornell who started that season third on the depth chart. He was so thin that his coach, Jim Hofher, per- sonally put him on a scale to make sure he weighed 170 pounds. I was sur- prised he weighed that much, Hofher said. Cornell was playing at Stanford that day in 1991. It predictably wasnt much of a game. We were a non-schol- arship Ivy League team, a band of merry men travel- ing across the country, recalls Hofher. A mismatch of a game. So at halftime, with the game already out of hand, Hofher turned to his young quarter- back and gave him his chance. Bill Lazor would start the second half. Now, the scoreboard says that Cornell was drubbed 55-6 by Stanford. What it doesnt tell you is that Bill Lazor led his team to its only touchdown drive. Just six points? It was enough to convince Hofher that he had found his starting quarterback. What he also found in the process was a player as smart as any he had ever coached, a player who would start for the next two-plus seasons, a player who was so impressive in so many ways that Hofher gave Lazor a coaching job right out of college. Thats how his path to the Miami Dolphins began. He was so cerebral, recalls Hofher, who Bill Lazors Impressive Journey See LAST WORD, page 76 New Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor started demon- strating his offensive acumen when he was playing quarterback at Cornell more than two decades ago. 75,76-LAST WORD 2 9/1/14 6:33 PM Page 1 is now assistant head coach at Nevada. He would ask questions, the right questions. But he was not only bright, he was industrious and he was firm and he was like that as a young player. Hofher rattles off stories about Lazor with pride and admiration. There was the time Lazor audibled to a quarterback sneak against Harvard. We were at the 5-yard line, Hofher recalls. You wouldnt think you could run a quarterback sneak from there. But Lazor knew exactly what to do, exact- ly where the crease would be, exactly how his linemen would block on the play. A 5-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak? No problem for Bill Lazor. He was so much fun to coach, Hofher says. There was nothing that was too much for him. Like the time against Brown when Cornell had a fourth-and-goal from the 10-yard line on the final play of the game, needing a touchdown to win. Hofher remembers put- ting in one of those plays that might have confused most any other quarterback. An unbalanced line to the wide side of the field. A fake handoff. A naked quarterback bootleg to the left. A tight end crossing into the end zone. Lazor could not have executed the play any better. The good guys won that day, Hofher says. Or maybe Hofher will tell you about the day Lazor passed for 400 yards against Columbia. Or the run of games when he threw 124 straight passes without an inter- ception. Or the 17 school records that he broke, many of them set by Hofher when he played quarterback at Cornell. But those werent the things that Hofher will remember most. What remains most vivid, and will always remain most vivid, is how Bill Lazor used his mind as his most potent weapon. How many college coaches ask their young quarterback: What do you think we should run on this play? And how many col- lege coaches would intently listen? This is Bill Lazors story. Intelligent. Creative. In many ways, ahead of his time. The perfect mentor for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The perfect architect for this new-look offense. When Hofher took the head-coaching job at the University of Buffalo in 2001, who do you think he hired as his offensive coordina- tor? Yep, Bill Lazor. At 28 years old. May have been the youngest Division I offensive coordinator in the country at that time, Hofher says. A year later, Lazor said goodbye to his old coach and made his move to the NFL. He has worked for some impressive offensive minds through the years Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs, Mike Holmgren and Chip Kelly and took something from each of them. Now, he is tak- ing all of that knowledge and applying it to the Dolphins, impressing so many people in his short time here. But his biggest fan may still be Jim Hofher. He has always lived his life with his eyes wide open, Hofher said of Lazor. I love him as if he was one of my own. And it all really started at halftime of a lop- sided loss at Stanford some 23 years ago. 76 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK LAST WORD, from page 75 He was not only bright, he was industrious and he was firm and he was like that as a young player. 75,76-LAST WORD 2 9/1/14 6:33 PM Page 2 INSIDE COVERS 9/1/14 6:45 PM Page 1 FRONT AND BACK COVER 9/1/14 6:45 PM Page 1
