With the Cromer Carnival behind
us now and those lovely children
all back at their school or college,
its time to start our lives again.
So what do we do?
For most of us it is work as usual,
doing what we enjoy, or in some
cases not that much, to pay those
household bills or are we planning
to do something completely
different in the future?
As of Sept 14th I am off to the land
of the long white cloud, New
Zealand, to visit my old mum.
Now aged 85 young, shes in pretty
good condition, living by the sea
in Omokoroa in the North Island
of NZ, about 100 plus miles
South - East of Auckland.
New Zealand is one of those places
that is great to visit, but living there
is another thing altogether, as you
really are miles from anywhere
else other than Australia, which
is again a newly settled land.
So of course I will enjoy my visit
and seeing relations that I havent
seen for years, but I will in due
course be more than happy to
get back to Norfolk, after
only two weeks away.
The next issue to come out will all
be thanks to the likes of Cindy &
her grandson Luke and also Jeff
& Dorothy, who will be doing
the extra distribution, thank
you to all of them.

In particular my thanks go to my
good lady wife, Lis for putting
the next issue together and also
managing the business, phone
calls and the queries etc. etc.
while I am away.
Maybe I am getting old, but the
thought of spending so long in
the air, travelling out to New
Zealand does not inspire many
pleasurable thoughts.
It really is the other side
of the globe.
I will however be back and on the
ball at the beginning of October.
Enjoy Your Crab Tales
Philip Keddell

Dear Mr Keddell,
I enjoyed looking at the 50+ lively people
pics from the Cromer carnival but could
see only one of the wonderful floats
you refer to that they came to see.
Perhaps it was difficult for you to snap them
as you drove your VW Kubelwagen but if
a way could be found for readers to know
Dear Philip,
We had a very successful evening in the
Cromer Carnival marquee on the Tuesday
evening of Carnival week.
So through your Crab Tales could we say a
BIG thank you to all the local people, shop
-keepers and businesses, including some
from Overstrand and Norwich, who
donated a record 94 prizes for the
Carnival Bingo Raffle.
Another record this year was broken as the
profit on the raffle was 1,144.20 which
was paid into the Carnival Fund.
So thank you to all the people who continue
to come along from far and near to support
us each year.

more about them (e.g. entrants, type) in
the future maybe that would encourage
more to take part.

In Response: It is not that easy to take pics
whilst driving, see Paul Damens pic above
but I do agree that more info about entering
floats should be publicised in future. PK
Dear Philip,
I have arranged a holiday for a group of our
dialysis patients, their carers including some
staff & volunteers who help on a regular basis.
There is also a transplant patient & bereaved
relative. In all 34 folk going to Bournemouth
on September 29th for 4 nights.
Dialysis patients find holidays very difficult
to have as there are very few places which
can take holiday dialysis patients.

Dear Phillip,
Well I must say judging by the feedback that
I have had, the Coastwatch Fun-Day really
was a FUN-DAY, enjoyed by all who attended.
The weather was kind to us but not as kind as
the people of Mundesley and North Norfolk
who managed to spend a massive 2945 to
help fund our station for the coming year.
A big thank you goes out to you & Lis for all
the help and advice you gave us and to all
the members of Coastwatch and their
families for giving up their time to
make it such a great day.
A special thank you must also go to our enter-
tainer, RAZZ who was his usual inimitable
self, making sure that children and parents
alike had a good time.
Also to Keith Pinner who brought along his
prized possession Lucy to entertain us
with her wonderful organ music, and last
but definitely not least Cerian Ellson
whose wonderful voice charmed
everyone during her showcase.
Therefore once again a big thank you to all,
Bob White
Treasurer Mundesley NCI.
Dear Philip,
Please note that the final date for the Mardle
& Munch at Lower Southrepps Social Club
this season will be Weds 24th September.
Many thanks to all our customers who have
helped raise funds for this years charity -

We will be in touch next year to advise our
opening times.
Thank you for your help with the free
publicity for our event.
Kind regards,

Dear Mr Philip,
I am Mr H Mouse. At one time I was a roving
reporter for an earlier Crab publication.
You probably wont remember me as at that
point you were involved in making your
millions elsewhere.
I know you normally dont print letters from
us mice, but Mrs W Mouse says that if I say
nice things about you there is a better chance.
So I think you look lovely in your pyjamas.
Why the letter then? Easy! Ive just written a
book. Yes, a proper book with a cover and
everything. Its called THE MOUSE
WITH THE GOLDEN NUN
by Mr H Mouse.
A true story about an adventure that me and my
lovely wife Mrs W Mouse had. We were set
to interview Sir S deMouse up at the big hall,
when we found ourselves accidentally caught
in a dangerous plot. A band of ruthless stoats
had decided to take over the world.
Mrs W Mouse says I should point out that the
paperback version is available via Amazon
and eBook is ridiculously cheap on Kindle.
She says that if you search Mr H Mouse
then it will pop up, or you can find a link
to it at my web site www.mrhmouse.co.uk
And before I finish Please may us mice have
a signed photograph of you actually in your
pyjamas. The dartboard down at the Cheese
& Gherkin has been stolen.
Squeak to you soon.
Mr H Mouse.
Dear Phillip,
I had to go into Trunch just before the Music
Festival, to a good customer of mine and I
understand that some of the local residents
are very unhappy with the antics brought
on by this festival.
I had to go along the Mundesley Road in
Trunch from the pub end and I noticed that
the festival organisers had even coned off
the road trying to restrict access to the extent
of trying to close the road and making life
very difficult for some of the people living
on the Mundesley road.
The lady I went to was in tears and very
upset over it all as she stated the noise
had also badly disrupted the birds and
wildlife in her garden.
It appears the organisers of this festival have
run rough shod over a few of the Trunch
locals with complete disregard.
Please can you ask others to comment on
this problem by writing in.
Kind regards
David
Dear Editor,
In regard to the verse entitled My Missus
printed in Issue 043 edition of the Crab
Tales, sent in by David Thorne, I found
it very offensive.
I have a good sense of humour but this was
particularly disturbing and unfunny.
It was not at all suitable for a FREEBIE
distributed to the general public.
Its selection was in sickenly bad taste.
Yours sincerely
Nona Wright
Cromer.
Response From Editor:
Please note the verse was not written by
David Thorne, who regularly contributes
to the Crab Tales. We opted to print this
as we found it very witty.
As a unit in Cromer we were only too happy
to be able to offer holiday dialysis to visitors
but this year as we are running at full capacity
with our own local patients we can no longer
offer this facility which is such a shame.
We also have patients who because of their
illness would not feel confident about being
able to travel alone and for some they have
not had a holiday for many years.
The holiday has been made possible by lots
of fundraising over the past couple of years,
with a variety of raffles, fetes, stalls & very
generous bequests, also fantastic donations
from Sidestrand Church who held a fete &
Waitrose, North Walsham who chose us
as one of their charities in June 2014.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf
of the patients to thank everybody who has
helped to make this trip possible.
Kind regards

Almost Angels -
Rock Covers Band
24 hours after the copy deadline for this edition
Lis, the real power (dont tell PK) behind Crab
Tales, set me a task - well, TWO actually, which
read: Could you carry on from Philips editorial
which ends with: ......so I asked him to fll me
in with more about the history of his band?
And.. Philip offered to write a bit more himself
but he doesnt really know much about music.
I mean, as if I do - I am only a drummer, for Gods
sake...nevertheless, not one to be phased by the
impossible, here goes...
The seed for Almost Angels was sown 7 years ago
during a momentary lapse in sanity & eating, by
MP, but took the original name of Better the Devil
Note the complete turn-round in sentiment but,
not necessarily, fortunes...
Over the course of this time, the band has become
a strong 4-piece outft whose aim it is to play rock
music which the audience know & like yet other
bands dont necessarily wish, or have the time,
to attempt.
Members are Andrea Sulston - front person and
lead vocalist of note - who joined some 18 months
ago and, although the youngest amongst us, acts
as a guiding maternal fgure possessing a maturity
far in excess of her years and good looks.
Trevor Hall, meanwhile, is the foundation bass-
man (plus additional vocalist) from Runton (East)
who became a Devil (or Angel) as far back as 2009.
Trevor was initially more into acoustic stuff, being
a member of Bartram-Hall and, before that, the
Skylarks with his Daughter Rachel, who went
on to play violin with Stackridge & Big Train.
In his deeper past, he supported Dr Feelgood
when living in his home county of Essex.
On now to our main man, Nigel Digby, lead
guitarist/vocals/musical arranger/calming
infuence; also a writer and authority on
local railways, not least the M&GN.
When a previous band member quit a year ago,
I compiled a wish-list of 6 or 7 top-fight local
musicians who - in a perfect world - we would
be honoured to have as our lead guitarist.
We could not believe our good fortune when
Nigel, who topped this list, said he was happy
to join us - not only to play - but also partake
in cake, coffee, cake, rehearsals & cake each
Thursday. Nigel, who owns and runs Cromer
Red House School of Music, started on guitar
& bass in 1972 and joined his fathers band in
1975 whilst still at Paston College.
Many locals might well recall his band, Canis
Strange, who produced their own originals
back in the 80s - my Son Chris being on
bass with a later edition of this band, i.e.
Canis, at the close of this decade.
For many years, Nigel was the lead
guitarist & singer with Razor Sharp -
who would usually support the current
Dr Feelgood whenever they featured
in this locality.
Latterly, 3-piece Mista Splinta, more-
or-less complete Nigels CV prior to
his becoming an Angel.
On to yours truly, I guess... Prior to forming
what was to become Almost Angels, in 2007
I drummed for Low Ebb (our answer to
Sheringham band Hi Tide), then Low
Commotion and subsequently The Lost
Boys. Ive also been known to team up
with Steve Fordington, pianist-of-note
from Bradfeld.
I would never forgive myself if I didnt mention
Kirsty OConnor Palmer - former vocalist, who
we sorely miss and who brought so much to
Almost Angels, including our singer Andrea,
plus much joy and laughter. Sadly, she had to
stand down earlier this year following a serious
operation which rendered her unable to sing.
We wish her all the luck in the World and
extend a heartfelt invitation to join us for a
song or two whenever she feels ft.
Thank you, K OC-P.
For those who havent already had the chance
opportunity to enjoy our music at such venues
as the Sheringham Crown, The Bacton Duke,
Northrepps, the Mundesley Ship, The Kings
Head in Cromer etc.etc.; our next gig will be
at the Haig Club in Mundesley on Friday
21st November.
Would be great if you could join us there...
And why the name Almost Angels?
Your guess is as good as mine....
Dont have nightmares.
MP
To all users of the A148/B1436
Felbrigg Junction
The Felbrigg Junction where the B1436 intersects
with the A148 Holt to Cromer Road has long been
a source of frustration for drivers using this
junction in all directions.
Felbrigg Parish Council are promoting an initiative
to have a roundabout installed with appropriate
speed restrictions on the approaches to this
intersection in an effort to prevent accidents
and improve traffc fow.
The B1436 is regarded as the Cromer Bypass
and designated by Norfolk County Council
Highways dept. as a Main Distributer Route.
In promoting this initiative Felbrigg Parish Council
already have the support of the Chief Executive of
North Norfolk District Council Mrs Sheila Oxtoby,
the NNDC planning committee, The National Trust
at Felbrigg Hall, all 3 Emergency Services who use
the Cromer Bypass daily, the innumerable business
and commuter users of this busy route and the ever
increasing number of tourists who regularly use
this junction and are essential to this area.
When it was agreed that a similar traffc fow
problem existed at Roughton on the same road
where the B1436 intersects with the A140, the
construction of 2 mini roundabouts immediately
solved the problem, which in itself would
justify similar action at the junction of
the A148 and the B1436 .
No purchase of land would be necessary to
effect this improvement.
If you agree with this proposal please sign this letter and
return it to the address below by 30th September 2014.
Thank you
John W Blair (Chairman Felbrigg Parish Council)
I agree a roundabout is required at the B1436 / A148 junction.

Matt Donates
Minibus To
About With
Friends
After he had acquired a minibus from the
Poppyland Partnership for 1,000, Matthew
of Boyers Body Centre, on
Hall Road, Cromer, felt this was an
opportunity to give something back
to the community.
After some research and a chat with me,
as one of clients and friend, Matt chose
About With Friends.
So on Tuesday September 2nd Matt handed
over the keys to a beautifully reconditioned
and newly painted van to the pople from
About With Friends.
Looking around the van, one cannot, but
be very impressed with all the work that
Matt and his team have done to make
the van ready for this local charity.
With 17 seats, the van
will be suitable for
holidays as well as
day trips.
One such journey being
planned, in the very
near future, is one
to the French War
Graves.
I have always admired
the way that Matt does
business and works
so well alongside
others in the
community.

Heads Were Turning..
....all over Knightsbridge and traffc slowing
to a crawl as people stopped and stared at the
supercars that took over the roads last month.
The Middle-Eastern millionaires who descended
on London for "The Season" had shipped over
their beloved Bugattis, Lamborghinis and
Rolls-Royces to join them.
And of course, many of them have been greatly
personalised to match their owner's taste.
Among the outrageous motors spotted on the
Knightsbridge streets was a heavily modifed
Range Rover that looks like a bar of bullion,
worth 150,000.
It features gold-rimmed, carbon-black alloy
wheels and wrap-around tinted windows,
while sporting a private registration.
Perhaps the one that looked most out of place was
a 370,000 6-wheeled Mercedes G63 AMG
that dwarfed all the other cars on the road.
No doubt the beastly motor is also a
nightmare to fnd parking for.
Meanwhile owners of the other luxury cars seem
unfazed by parking fnes, with a beige-coloured
Bugatti Veyron with orange interior and a white
& crimson Rolls-Royce spotted outside Harrods
with tickets stuck to their windscreens.
The sight of these unique motors had the car-
enthusiasts salivating, with the 'carparazzi'
keen to get a snap of the 4-wheeled wonders.
However, not everyone is a fan, with some of
the Knightsbridge residents saying the drivers
turn the area into their own personal race
track, while police say some owners laugh
at the law by parking illegally and driving
without insurance.

Another Successful
Weekend Of Great
Music And Fun
Another fun and brilliant weekend that for
the second year running, turned the village
of Trunch into the place to be.
Kicking off on Friday August 22nd and going
on until Sunday 24th, TRUNCHONBURY
was indeed a great weekend enjoyed by
everyone, who either performed or
simply turned out.
Some 25 bands and acts took part from 6pm
on the Friday until after 6pm on the Sunday.
While in the Trunch Village Hall, during the
festival, everyone was entertained by the
Mundesley Players, comedians like Pat
Nearney (Below), belly dancers and
choirs etc etc.
It was a great weekend with over 3,000 tickets
being sold in aid of the Mundesley Lifeboat
and the Trunch Village Society.
Above: Roy Davenports Magic Stage
Above : Paul Reynolds of the
Mundesley Players

A Great Success
Saturday August the 23rd was indeed a very
successful day for the Mundesley National
Coast Watch on Gold Park in Mundesley.
I have to say the voice of Cerian Elson, (On
Right) was brilliant, as this is the young lady
who also appeared in the recent Mundesley
Players performance at the Coronation Hall.
Aged just 16, she really is a natural performer
and delighted everyone on the day.
This event which was organised, in the main
by John Carpenter, the Chairman of the
Mundesley Coast Watch was certainly
a great success and enjoyed by all
with a good turn out of visitors.
(Below On left)
(On Right) is James Anderson from
North Walsham, sitting next to his
traction engine. A wonderful bit of
engineering that took him a number
of years to build.
(Bottom Left)
A Mother takes on her young son into
the ring. Along with many of the Coast
Watch team was Judy Peters (On Right)
helping to run the Raffe stand.
The day was enjoyed by everyone.

Thorpe Market
Church Update
A picture to gladden our hearts!
The Unpaid Work Unit has spent 3 days cutting
the long grass, raking it off and barrowing it
down to the Hazel Grove.
Church members spent time engaging with the
young workers, boiling kettles & providing cakes.
We found it a worthwhile experience and the
young men seemed very happy to have people
having normal conversations with them.
They will return in October and the intention is
to ask them to clear the Hazel Grove. The church
mowers are still in dock, one is likely beyond
repair & will need re-placing but the scything
machine will enable us to keep on top of the
churchyard for the rest of the year.
Offers of help with the routine mowing are
already forth-coming although it is a case
of many hands make light work, so further
publicity to extend the volunteer base will
take place in the near future.
Meanwhile volunteers have worked on the borders
around the church and the seat has been painted.
The borders look rather bare because some of
the lavenders had to be removed because of
old age but re-planting is on the agenda.
Meanwhile the need is for volunteers, a posse
of churchyard gnomes, to complement the current
workers. Plans are afoot to paint gates, trim back
over-grown hollies and buddleia and cut back
the ivy on the walls.
Contact: info@thorpemarket.org.uk
or 01263 833 252.
The churchyard is now well on its way to being
restored to its former award winning glory and
a regular schedule of services at 10 am on the
1st & 3rd Sundays of each month is in place.
Wanted Artists!
A recent exhibition by a Nth Walsham group
of artists illustrated just how attractive the
venue of Thorpe Market Church is.
A continuous run of screens at the back & along
both sides of the nave can provide 78 feet of
vertical screens. Table tops across the pews
offer further effective display space and the
windows can be blacked out if required and
modern lighting has been installed.
In the past up to four exhibitions by local
community groups a year have taken place.
The thought is that smaller private exhibitions
could also be accommodated, using fewer screens
and perhaps for shorter periods of time.
The churchs exhibition facilities are freely
available for individuals to show their
talents in a very attractive venue.
Please contact: info@thorpemarket.org.uk
for further details.

Negativity....
This is something to think about when
negative people are doing their best to
rain on your parade So remember
this story the next time
A woman was at her hairdressers getting
her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her
husband.
She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser,
who responded:
Rome? Why would anyone want to go there?
Its crowded and dirty. Youre crazy to go to
Rome. So, how are you getting there?
Were taking Continental, was the reply.
We got a great rate!
Continental? exclaimed the hairdresser.
Thats a terrible airline. Their planes are old,
their ight attendants are ugly, and theyre
always late. So, where are you staying in
Rome?
Well be at this exclusive little place over
on Romes Tiber River called Teste.
Dont go any further. I know that place.
Everybody thinks its going to be something
special & exclusive, but its really a dump.
Were going to go to see the Vatican and
maybe get to see the Pope.
Thats rich, laughed the hairdresser.
You and a million other people trying to
see him. Hell look the size of an ant. Boy,
good luck on this lousy trip of yours.
Youre going to need it.
A month later, the woman again came in
for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her
about her trip to Rome.
It was wonderful, explained the woman, not
only were we on time in one of Continentals
brand new planes, but it was overbooked,
and they bumped us up to frst class.
The food and wine were wonderful, and
I had a handsome 28-year-old steward
who waited on me hand and foot..
And the hotel was great!
Theyd just fnished a $5 million remodelling
job, so now its a jewel, the fnest hotel in the
city. They, too, were overbooked, so they
apologised and gave us their owners
suite at no extra charge!
Well, muttered the hairdresser, thats all
well and good, but I know you didnt get to
see the Pope.
Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we
toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me
on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope
likes to meet some of the visitors, and if Id be
so kind as to step into his private room and
wait, the Pope would personally greet me.
Sure enough, fve minutes later, the Pope
walked through the door and shook my
hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few
words to me..
Oh, really! Whatd he say?
He said: Who messed up your hair?

10 Good Years Later
On Sunday August 31st, after 10 years of
holding and conducting Church services
as Rector of the Trunch Group, Rod Key
is moving on.
Rod and his wife Sue will be moving on
September 17th into the St Andrews
Vicarage in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Rod has done a grand job as Rector and his
last service refected this very much from
the comments made by every one of the
over 200 people who attended both the
service in the All Saints Church in
Mundesley and the lunch afterwards
in the Coronation Hall.
For someone who is not a regular attender of
church services, I found that it was indeed a
moving and jolly service enjoyed by those
who turned out to support and encourage
their out-going Rector.
The comments made by Rev. David Bartlett
were supported by the whole congregation
at this moving service.
Everyone enjoyed one of the many gifts
given to Rod and Sue, written over
one of many notice boards.
(See Above Right)
While the church choir was providing a
number of songs, it was very ftting for
Doctor Burford to produce and give a
solo performance of a jolly song,
which was having a dig at Rod and Sue,
which was enjoyed by everyone,
including Rod and Sue.
Doctor Burford is pictured below with his
team of some of the jolly choir members.
Over the next four months or so the
church will be run by the team that
is already in place until a new
Rector is found.
On behalf of so many, may I wish
Rod and Sue all the very best in
their new parish.

On August 24th..
...the 2014 Cromer and Sheringham Crab &
Lobster Festival came to a close on with a
Grand Auction of Bootiful Boats & World
Pier Crabbing Championships in Cromer.
Decorated boats lined the slopes leading to
the pier, local food & craft stalls lined the
prom and lines were set ready for a day
of competitive crabbing and bidding.
Under the hammer of auctioneer Martyn Fox,
the 70 boats sold in just over 50 minutes to
raise over 4,100 which will be distributed
to local charities via the Festivals
Community Grant scheme.
The boats were part of the Festivals art trail
which ran from Easter up until the Auction.
Over 150 individuals had decorated the boats
including community groups, schools and
staff of local businesses.
The boat that achieved the top price at auction
was sponsored by The Garden House Gallery
in Cromer and was decorated by Samuel
Thomas and fetched 430.
This was followed by the boat sponsored by
Breakers Cafe in Cromer and decorated by
Dianne Lindsay at 290 which was bought
back by the Cafe and will be displayed
there for customers to view.
Prior to the auction the Festival hosted the
5th World Pier Crabbing Championships.
After 3 hours of competitive Line crabbing
the World Pier Crabbing Champion title was
won by Team Havoc 2 from Milton
Keynes, who caught 5 crabs.
They were awarded the Richard Davies
Memorial Plate which is named memory
of former Cromer lifeboat coxswain
Richard Davies who died in 2010.
Other prizes awarded were for the
Largest Crab caught which went
to Team Gangway, who caught
one measuring 140mm and to
fve year old George Palmer
who caught 44 crabs by net
landing him the Most Crabs
Caught by Net prize.
Awards were also presented to the
winners of the Scrumptious Sea-
food Trail by Festival presidents
Noel Gant and Hilary Cox.
The top awards went to Breakers
Caf in Cromer and Joyful Wests
Shellfsh Bar in Sheringham.
The Festival wishes to thank all the people
who helped, supported and bid at the event.
Next years Festival will take place
from the 15th 17th May 2015.

Struggling To Get A
Good Nights Kip?
- Here Are Some Pointers to Help
The Importance of A Full Nights Sleep
As a GP one of the more common issues I encounter
is patients who experience some sort of diffculty
in getting adequate sleep; whether this is falling
asleep initially or staying asleep.
In fact statistics suggest that 1 out of 3 people
at any given time have troubles in this area.
Sleep deprivation is known to have several negative
consequences including a reduction in learning
and memory, weight gain, increased propensity
for having accidents during the daytime, poor
mood, cardiovascular problems (eg high blood
pressure) and reduced immune function (ie
increased susceptibility to infections).
The aim of this article is to help to empower you
with the knowledge & tools you need to improve
your chances of getting the sleep you need.
Some Science Behind Sleep
Before we move on to discuss some strategies for
dealing with sleep problems it is helpful to have
an understanding of what normal sleep entails.
A good nights sleep is considered to have the
following characteristics: less than 30 mins to
fall asleep, maintenance of sleep for 6-8 hours,
less than 3 brief awakenings per night and
feeling refreshed on awakening.
However the medical profession recognises that
individuals are different so the exact amount of
sleep needed from person to person is variable.
The main issue is really whether you are able
to function satisfactorily with the amount of
sleep you get.
Normal sleep has two different phases.
The frst of these is known as quiet sleep -
this progresses through 4 different stages.
The 2nd phase is known as rapid eye movement
(REM) sleep. The brain is very active during this
time, whilst the body is inactive apart from the
rapid movement of the eyes. This REM time is
when most dreaming occurs.
During a normal nights sleep there are approx.
4-5 periods of quiet sleep alternating with 4-5
periods of REM sleep- these are interspersed
briefy by short periods of wakening every
two hours or so.
Common Causes of Poor Sleep
These are myriad but usually fall into one of the
following three categories. Firstly problems due
to temporary factors such as travel, a new baby,
change of routine etc.
Sometimes people go through phases when they
fxate on the amount of sleep they get and start
to clock-watch- this can give the perception
that a normal nights sleep is inadequate when
actually the total time asleep is satisfactory.
These problems are usually temporary and will
usually settle given time. The second category is
problems due to physical factors. This includes
illnesses causing pain, breathlessness, cough,
needing to pass urine etc.
In some cases a condition known as obstructive
sleep apnoea can be the culprit where patients
may have disrupted sleep due to intermittent
blockage of the airways. Signs of this could
include excess snoring & choking episodes.
These would be best addressed by treating the
underlying cause which may mean a trip to the
GP surgery. It also is important to remember that
substances such as alcohol, caffeine and some
prescribed medications can also have an effect.
The 3rd category comprises psychological issues
such as depression, anxiety or bereavement.
Again dealing with these will often rectify
the sleeping problem.
What can I do to deal with poor sleep?
Doctors refer to habits that promote a good nights
sleep as sleep hygiene. These are things which
you can try yourself which may resolve the
problem without necessarily needing a trip to
the GP surgery. The main points include:
Dont go to bed until you feel sleepy.
Dont stay in bed if youre not asleep - go
into another room and do something else -
return when youre tired.
Avoid daytime naps (even when exhausted)
Reserve a room for sleep only - dont work,
eat, read or watch TV in it.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine within
6 hours of bedtime
Try a warm bath & warm milky drink at bedtime.
Regular daytime exercise helps you feel more
tired at night - obviously avoid close to bedtime.
Get up at the same time each morning
regardless of how youve slept.
Relaxation techniques such as progressive
muscular relaxation can be helpful.
Some of these points may seem counterintuitive
(eg: avoiding daytime naps, getting up when you
are not sleeping, getting up at the same time
each morning). They may even initially make
you feel more tired but the ultimate aim is to
re-establish a regular routine.
What about drug treatment?
Doctors sometimes use a short course of sedative
medication (often Zopiclone or Zolpidem) for
a week or two in severe cases to help with re-
establishing a regular routine.
However it should be borne in mind that these
should be tried only after the above measures
have been implemented. They can be very
diffcult to come off once people become
addicted (some people develop severe
withdrawal symptoms).
In addition they can cause a hangover effect in
some people and make it diffcult to function the
following the day. They have been shown to
increase the risk of falls and confusion
particularly in older people.
Some people also try valerian which is a herbal
over the counter treatment but there is no evidence
as yet to show that this is actually effective.
The emphasis in treating sleep problems should
always be to improve sleep habits and address
the underlying causes rather than resort to
potentially damaging medication.

Friends In Flanders
About With Friends has received 8,500 from
the Heritage Lottery Fund for its project,
Friends In Flanders.
Awarded through HLFs First World War:
then and now programme, the project will
focus on forging links between Cromer
and the Flanders region of Belgium.
Launched at Halsey House on 5th September,
the British Legion Care Home, one of the key
organisations supporting About With Friends,
the 1st part of the project is a 7 day Battlefeld
Tour for members of the charity who all have
learning disabilities.
Members will record their activities in Belgium
through video, photography, sound and writing
and these recollections will be used to create
talks, presentations and an exhibition.
The exhibition will be on show at Halsey House
from the 11th November until Christmas after
which it will tour the district.
The idea behind the project began as a simple
trip to the battlefelds for members. As most
did not attend mainstream schools they were
not afforded this opportunity whilst at school.
Since About With Friends has strong ties with
the local community running lunch clubs for
the Over 60s and visiting residents of Halsey
House on a weekly basis, it was decided to
get them all involved in the project.
AWF will be laying a wreath at the Menin gate
on behalf of Halsey House and are taking a gift
made by its members from Cromer British
Legion to Ieper British Legion.
As well as partly funding the trip, the grant will
enable About With Friends to produce a quality
permanent record of their experiences using a
variety of media. As well as the exhibition and
presentations there will be a project website
(www.friendsinfanders.org.uk)
Commenting on the award, the organisations
CEO, Helen Dalton-Hare BEM said:
We are thrilled to have received the support
of the Heritage Lottery Fund and delighted to
be working with our friends in the community
on this exciting project.
The head of the East of England Heritage
Lottery Fund said:
The impact of the First World War was far
reaching, touching & shaping every corner of
the UK and beyond.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested
more than 58million in projects large and
small - that are marking this Centenary.
Our new small grants programme is enabling even
more communities like those involved in About
With Friends to explore the continuing legacy
of this confict and help local young people in
particular to broaden their understanding of
how it has shaped our modern world.

Cromer RNLI
Lifeboat Day
First indications are that the money raised on
Sunday August 3rd 2014 has surpassed all
expectations. The money raised so far
is approximately 5500.
The beautiful weather combined with
the crowds of people walking along the
promenade meant that all of the stall
holders did a roaring trade all day.
There were many activities to wow the
crowds including displays by both of
Cromer RNLIs lifeboats.
The boats were joined by Sheringham RNLI
to the delight of the assembled crowds.
Jim Page, Cromer RNLI Treasurer said:
I would like to thank all of the many generous
people who attended & helped us raise all this
money. We will defnitely be using some of the
ideas when we plan next years event.
Cromer Lifeboat Station has been operating
since 1804. To learn more about the Lifeboat
Station go to www.rnli.org/cromer
From Petes Pen
Norfolk Rivers Trust
I have just come back from a visit to the River
Mun Nature Reserve in Northrepps. It was quite
amazing to see the improvement to the area we
have collectively made in such a short time.
The ponds which earlier this year were dry and
overgrown with reeds are now looking much
improved; the water is clear and sticklebacks
& frogs are abundant. Along the edges a wide
variety of plant species grown from the seed
bank we disturbed when we excavated them
have sprung up; fag iris, marsh marigold, hemp
agrimony, purple loosestrife, fgwort, mint and
many more have recolonised.
Around these swarms of insects including
Southern Hawker dragonfies are buzzing,
supporting the wider ecosystem.
The understory trees we planted at the start of
the year are fourishing and in a few years will
provide a thick understory, ideal for nesting birds.
We do need some help to protect these from deer
please see below for information.
Over 30 bird boxes created by local pupils can
be found dotted around the woodlands, which
were added fairly late in spring so will no doubt
begin to be occupied next year.
Finally, we have begun work on building a hide
next to one of the ponds where visitors will be
able to observe the heron & kingfsher which
visit on a regular basis. We just need to add a
roof & viewing fap for it to be ready.
Future volunteering sessions are:
Tuesday 23rd September. 6 - 8:30pm.
(Training session) Learn how to record wildlife
(butterflies/birds/dragonflies etc) in the reserve
Saturday 11th October. 10am - 1pm.
(Practical session) Protection of recently planted un-
derstory (which is being rapidly nibbled on by deer!)
To get involved in this exciting project or have
any questions please contact me.

These days we all appear to be
acquiring more and more yet are
reluctant to part with anything,
just in case it may be useful
in the future.
More of us living in fats & apart-
ments, and houses are becoming
smaller, so storage becomes a
problem, but not any longer.
Youll have seen the Yes self-
drive, rental vans in and around
Cromer, well now, as well as being
able to help you move your items,
Yes can store them for you.
Situated at the old Coredale garage
site on Middlebrook Way in Cromer,
Yes Self Storage Solutions have
converted the huge warehouse at
the rear of the rental frms show-
room into individual self-storage
units which can be rented for any
period from a week to a year, or
longer if required.
The units range in size from just
24 sq ft to over 150 sq ft, large
enough to store a car if needed.
Each room is constructed from
box-profle steel sheeting with
a single steel door, providing a
high degree of security as the
occupier of each room will
have the only key to gain
entry to their unit.
Stored goods will be in a dry, secure,
vermin-free environment, with
access at any reasonable time.
24 hour CCTV covers the site
both internally and externally
and plans are in hand to provide
customers with 24 hr electronic
access. The rooms are available
to both private individuals, for
the storage of furniture, personal
effects etc. and to local frms who
may need temporary storage for
out of season, or excess stock,
at their own premises.
The Yes car and van rental
business, which now has a feet
of more than 35 modern vehicles,
began from nothing in 2007 and
has grown into a substantial local
business which is often assumed
to be the local branch of a
national company.
The business is still privately owned
& operated by father and son team
Neil and Patrick Moody.
Their professional approach has
resulted in the frm being accepted
as a member of the United Rental
Group, a group which links over
500 independent hire frms into a
powerful force within the British
rental industry.
This allows them to continually
update their rental feet with new
models as they become available.
The expansion into self-storage will
see the companies grow even more
rapidly over the coming years and
is a testament to their continued
confdence in North Norfolk
and Cromer in particular.

This is for any of our strange-
