Holy Protection of the Mother of God
The Holy Protection of the Mother of God is one of the most beloved Feast
Days of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church, which is
commemorated on 1 October by the Slavic Church and on 28 October
by the Greek Orthodox Church.
It is also known as the Feast of the Virgin Marys Cerement, which in most
Slavic languages means either Veil or Protection.
The Russian word Pokrov like the Greek word Skepi - has a complex
meaning.
First of all it refers to a cloak or shroud, but it also means Protection or
Intercession.
For this reason, the name of this Feast is variously translated as the Veil of
our Lady, the Protecting Veil of the Theotokos, the Protection of the
Theotokos, or the Intercession of the Theotokos.
The Feast Day celebrates the Appearance of our Lady Theotokos at the
Holy Church of Blachernae (Vlahema) in the 10
th
century.
At the end of the life of St Andrew of Constantinople, he together with his
faithful disciple, St Epiphanios, and various others beheld the
Appearance of the Holy Mother of God, St John the Baptist and several
other Holy Saints and Heavenly Hosts during an All Night Vigil in the
Church of Blachernae, which was situated near the city gates of
Constantinople.
The Blachernae Palace Church was where several of the precious Holy
Relics of our Lady Theotokos were kept, such as Her robe, Her veil and
part of Her belt (sash, cincture or girdle) that had been transferred from
Palestine during the 5
th
century.
Our Lady Theotokos was seen to approach the centre of the church, where
She knelt down and remained in Prayer for a long time. Her Face was
wet with flowing tears. Eventually She removed Her veil (cerement)
and spread it over the people who were present - as a Sign of Holy
Protection.
At that time, the citizens of Constantinope were threatened by a barbarian
invasion and after the Appearance of our Lady Theotokos and Her
Holy Companions during the All Night Vigil, the impending danger was
averted and the city was spared from terrible bloodshed and suffering.
The Holy Protection of Theotokos is commemorated most fervently in Slavic
churches since St Andrew of Constantinople was a Slav by birth.
The first celebration in the Russian Orthodox Church dates back to the 12
th

century and today, is celebrated throughout the Orthodox Church.
The Feast Day commemorating the Miraculous Appearance is celebrated
with an All Night Vigil, with many of the same elements that occur on
the Great Feasts of our Ever Blessed Lady Theotokos.
However, this Feast has no Afterfeast leading to the Apodosis (Leave-
taking).
The Russian Primary Chronicle noted that the Intercession of the Theotokos
was desperated needed for the Protection of the citizens of
Constantinople when a large fleet of pagan Rus, led by Askole and Dir,
threatened the city.

Nevertheless, the invading fleet was defeated and the Event was
commemorated every year thereafter.
Strangely, the Feast was considered a major Event initially only by the
Slavic Orthodox Church but not by the Greek Orthodox Church.
In recent years, the Feast of the Holy Protection has become associated
with Thanksgiving for the Deliverance of the Greek Nation from the
Italian invasion of 1940.
These Events are now commemorated on 28 October by all Greeks
throughout the world as Ochi Day or No Day which refers to the
response of the Greek leader, Metaxas to Mussolinis ultimatum.
In recognition of this, and becasue of the many Divine Miracles performed
through the Holy, Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, which were reported by
numerous Greek soldiers during the Greco-Italian War of 1940 1941,
the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece elected in 1952 to transfer the
Feast from 1 October to 28 October.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate also provides for this usage in its Parishes
throughout Greece and the Greek diaspora (throughout the world).
The Feast of the Holy Protection is now faithfully observed together with the
commemoration of Oxi Day.
A Doxology is chanted, which incorporates Hymns commemorating the
Holy Protection of our Ever Blessed Lady Theotokos over the Greek
Nation, as well as the Festal Kontakion O Champion Leader...
With regard to the Holy Icon of the Feast, two different Events that occurred
400 years apart are combined, both of which took place in the Church
of Blachernae, Constantinople.
The Theotokos is depicted standing above the Faithful congregation with
Her arms outstretched in Prayer and draped with Her veil.
Angels stand on either side of Her, while on the lower right are St Andrew
and St Epiphanios who beheld this Vision, together with the Twelve
Apostles, Bishops, Holy Women, Monks and Martyrs.
St Epiphanios is dressed in a tunic under his cloak and gestures in
astonishment at the Miraculous Appearance, and St Andrew Fool for
Christ, is dressed only in a cloak.
Below the Theotokos, in the centre, St Romanos the Melodist is depicted,
holding an open scroll with the Festal Kontakion in honour of the Ever
Blessed Theotokos.
He is accompanied by his Choir and Emperor Leo the Wise, the Empress
and the Patriarch of Constantinople.

being filled with the Holy Spirit,
spoke out with a loud voice and said,
Blessed art Thou among women,

And why is this granted to me, that the
Mother of my Lord should come to
me?
For indeed, as soon as the voice of Thy
greeting sounded in my ears, the
babe leaped in my womb for Joy.
And Blessed is She Who believed, for
there will be a Fulfilment of those
things which were told her from the
Lord.
And Mary said: My soul Magnifies the
Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in
God my Saviour. For He has
regarded the lowly state of His
maidservant; for behold, henceforth
all generations will call me Blessed.
For He Who is Mighty has done Great
Things for me, and Holy is His
Name!
And Mary remained with her about
three months, and returned to her
home.
