Single stream recycling
County moves toward
new program. PAGE 5
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
For one weekend of the year
the quiet stretch of 206, just out-
side Tabernacle and in the heart
of Shamong, is replaced by a fes-
tival entertaining hundreds of
wine, craft and music enthusiasts
from around the area.
Welcome to year 13 of Valen-
zano Winerys WineFest.
Our goal is really just to put
on a great party that everyone
will enjoy, said Tony Valenzano,
owner of Valenzano Winery.It
seems we know how to throw a
party, because WineFest has
grown from a few hundred people
in 2002 to New Jersey's largest
wine festival.
This years festival, to be held
Sept. 20 and 21, will feature wines
from six other vineyards across
the state as well as Valenzanos
Special to The Sun
The scene at Valenzano Winery is a festive one during its annual WineFest. Local restaurants, crafters
and musicians fill the vineyard as attendees can sample wines from Valenzano as well as six other local
wineries. This years event will run Sept. 20-21 with the winerys annual fireworks festival taking place
the evening of Sept. 19.

Editors note: The following is
an interview with Lenape Re-
gional High School District Su-
perintendent Carol Birnbohm.
Responses have been edited.
Q: The transition from the
HSPA to the PARCC has present-
ed issues for school districts
across the country. Do you feel
the LRHSD schools are pre-
pared?
The Lenape Regional High
School District utilized the 2013-
2014 school year to prepare for
the upcoming PARCC assess-
ment. A committee made up of
teachers and administrators
from across the school district
assembled early in the year to
create an implementation plan
with strong input from comput-
er and network technicians. We
designed and implemented a
full-scale infrastructure test that
tested technology while the stu-
dents were able to navigate a tu-
torial and sample online ques-
tions in language arts and math-
ematics. The test included ap-
proximately 4,500 students en-
gaging 260 different test ses-
sions in 70
computer
labs. In this
infrastruc-
ture test, we
were able to
assess hard-
ware, operat-
ing systems,
Internet con-
nectivity and
bandwidth
while utiliz-
ing the proc-
tor caching offered by Pearson.
In addition, it was important to
have students answer sample
online questions and go through
a tutorial utilizing the new on-
line platform in order to famil-
iarize thousands of students
with an online assessment. In
the end, the district-created
large-scale infrastructure test
did not present any major prob-
lems for the district. However,
we were able to give Pearson

Carol Birnbohm discusses whats
in store for the Lenape Regional
High School District this school year
feedback regarding some possible
issues with their test design that
may help alleviate future confu-
sion. After the infrastructure
test, the Lenape District partici-
pated in a PARCC pilot test of-
fered by the New Jersey Depart-
ment of Education. As a result,
260 students in March were as-
sessed on the Performance Based
Assessment, and 308 students in
May were assessed on the End of
Year Assessment. The pilot,
given in the content areas of Al-
gebra I and Language Arts, once
again, allowed us to expose our
students to the online platform
and rigor of the new PARCC as-
sessment. In addition, this expe-
rience allowed us to coordinate
proctor training for this new on-
line assessment and develop the
collaborative relationship be-
tween test coordinators, proctors,
as well as computer and network
technicians needed for a success-
ful implementation of an online
assessment. The PARCC assess-
ment is a test of the Common
Core State Standards in English
Language Arts and mathematics
presenting a new test rigor com-
pared to PARCCs predecessor.
The Lenape District curriculum
in both English Language Arts
and mathematics has been
aligned with the Common Core
State Standards since 2011, soon
after New Jersey adopted the
standards in 2010. The rigor will
not be unfamiliar for our stu-
dents due to this alignment.
Q: What initiatives, whether
from the district level or the indi-
vidual schools are you most proud
of?
We are very proud of all of the
individual schools efforts to pre-
pare our students for success be-
yond high school. College or ca-
reer readiness is vitally impor-
tant for all of our students inde-
pendence.
In our senior exit survey, 90
percent of the Class of 2014 re-
ported they would be attending a
two- or four-year college this fall.
Hopefully, they left us with the
mindset that their high school
graduation was only the first they
will experience. The second will
be the thrill of receiving a college
diploma. I am very proud of our
efforts as a school community to
reinforce our two graduation ini-
tiative. In addition to academic
programs, such as providing the
PSAT for all ninth, 10th- and 11th-
grade college prep students, we
made a collective effort to cele-
brate college acceptance. Cele-
brations were simple activities
like Lenapes and Shawnees Aca-
demic Awards, where one by one,
seniors walked up to the podium
and proudly announced where
they will attend college and, that

Burlington County has deliv-
ered more than 40,000 blue recy-
cling carts as part of the transi-
tion to single stream recycling.
Residents with curbside collec-
tion can now recycle their cans,
bottles, newspapers and card-
board in the same container. For
residents with paper carts, their
paper cart is now their single
stream cart.
While many homes will be
able fit all their recyclables into
their existing paper cart, we knew
that some households would need
more cart capacity. Residents who
ordered an extra cart between last
September and this July should
receive their carts by the end of
September. Residents who have
ordered a cart and dont receive it
before single stream begins
should use their current buckets
for overflow until the extra cart
arrives, Freeholder Director
Bruce Garganio said.
We are all looking forward to
the convenience and cost savings
that come with single stream re-
cycling, Garganio said. Still the
transition to single stream and
the delivery of additional recy-
cling carts to over 40,000 individ-
ual homes is a massive undertak-
ing. There will be bumps in the
road and we ask our residents to
please be patient. As problems
arise we will work to fix them
quickly.
It is important that residents
know how the switch to single
stream recycling will affect their
specific area, Garganio said.
For example residents in Bor-
dentown City, Fieldsboro and Sha-
mong, the historic village of Roe-
bling, historic section of Burling-
ton City and uncarted townhome
communities will not receive blue
recycling carts but instead will
continue to use their existing re-
cycling buckets for single-stream
collection.

hirteen years have passed
since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks
on New York City and Wash-
ington, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 13 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace; and how, sadly, the
world is still dealing with terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 13 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Thirteen years later, we should all
be proud of the way we are remember-
ing and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memori-
als.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 13 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 13 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.
in our opinion

Burlington County Colleges radio sta-
tion WBZC-FM (Z88.9) is teaming up with
the Burlington County Sports Network
this fall to provide comprehensive cover-
age throughout the high school football
season online and over the air.
Burlington County College has a histo-
ry of supporting local high school commu-
nities and this partnership will enhance
that tradition, BCC Interim President
David Spang said. High school football
can unify communities and we are proud
to be able to expand access to the best foot-
ball action in Burlington County.
The Burlington County Sports Network,
a subsidiary of JL Media, is the premier
provider of high school sports coverage in
the county, offering in-depth insights and
analysis with network-quality multimedia
content including live play-by-play, talk
show analysis, practice breakdowns and
written articles.
As the leading source for high school
sports in South Jersey, BurlCo SportsNet is
excited about the opportunity to team up
with an established radio presence like
Z88.9, said JL Media President and CEO
Jay Liberti. This partnership will help us
build upon the tremendous success we ex-
perienced last year as an internet-only net-
work, provide real-life conditions for BCC
students to learn sports broadcasting and,
most importantly, provide greater access
for people in Burlington County to follow
the best high school football action.
Games will be broadcast at www.burl-
cosportsnet.com and on 88.9 FM.
Our team has extensive professional
experience and we are thrilled to join with
Burlco SportsNet in providing the best cov-
erage of high school sports in the area,
Z88.9 Operation Manager Jay Varga said.
This is an opportunity for Burlington
County College students to learn sports
broadcasting under game conditions and
for communities to follow the top high
school games wherever they go.

We look forward to the friend-
ly competition and to helping
wineries grow their business in
New Jersey, Valenzano said.
Samples of Jersey Devil Honey
Wine, Blueberry Bubbly, Cran-
pange and Red, White and Blue
Sangria will all be available as
well for tasting. Additionally,
each bottle of Red, White and
Blue Sangria sold will contribute
$1 to Operation Troop Aid, a
fundraiser Valenzanos has sup-
ported through WineFest.
Valenzano Winery has been
extremely helpful and greatly ap-
preciated by the men and women
serving our country, said Mark
Woods, founder of Troop Aid.
Troop Aid isnt the only chari-
ty Valenzanos is donating to.
More than a dozen charities local-
ly, including Indian Mills Athletic
Association, local animal shelters
and Boy Scouts of America, are
all supported through WineFest
in addition to numerous other
foundations.
This years celebration has an
addition as the winerys annual
Fourth of July fireworks festival
was cancelled earlier this sum-
mer so why not the slightly less
traditional Sept. 19 fireworks fes-
tival.
WineFest weekend doesnt
wear our staff down enough so
we decided to add an extra day
just to make it a really long
weekend, Valenzano said with a
laugh.
More than 70 local craft ven-
dors will have products available
in the Vineyard Bazaar for
guests. Shoppers can experience
local fashion, crafts and hobbies
and allows guests to leave with
more than just bottles of wine.
The bazaar is always a big
part of WineFest. It's a truly
unique shopping experience host-
ed by great crafters available to
talk about their crafts, hobbies
and products. Theyre a great
group of people with lots of good
conversation, Valenzano said.
Local eateries will be in atten-
dance as food vendors to provide
unending food options.
Pic-A-Lilli, Star of The Sea
Seafood and Tony and Doms
Crabby Fries will all be there,
said Valenzano.
Valenzanos goal was to make
the event kid and family friendly.
There will be a kids concert, a
magician as well as an acrobatic
and aerialist sword fighting show.
Parents can also take their chil-
dren to create sand art, get free
pony rides and face painting.
Its not too often that parents
can enjoy a wine festival and not
have to worry about their chil-
dren being bored, Valenzano
said.
Gates open for the fireworks
festival at 5 p.m. Admission is $10
for adults and $5 for children. The
fireworks show will begin some-
time after sunset.
Tickets for WineFest are $20 at
the door, and $15 in advance. The
event will run from Sept. 20
through Sept. 21 beginning at
noon and ending at 5 p.m. Both
events will take place at 1320 Old
Indian Mills Rd in Shamong.
For more information on ei-
ther event, call Valenzanos at
(609) 268-6731 or visit www.valen-
zanowine.com.
"WineFest is our annual cele-
bration. We do our best to make
sure everyone can kick back,

they are a member of the Class of
2018 of that college. At Cherokee,
the hallways were decorated with
a colorful display of the colleges
their seniors were going to this
fall; and each morning last
spring, Senecas morning an-
nouncements were highlighted
by a new list of students congrat-
ulated upon their acceptance to
college. These simple activities
helped build enthusiasm among
staff and students in every class
for our two graduation initiative-
planning for, applying to and cele-
brating acceptance to college and
then, equally important, attend-
ing and finishing college to pur-
sue their passions, wherever life
takes them after their second
graduation.
For the students who choose
college, we have a responsibility
to ensure our programs meet
their expectations and give them
the best possible shot to fulfill
their pursuits. We also have a re-
sponsibility to ensure students
who do not choose college, have
the social and employable skills
needed to succeed beyond high
school.
The Lenape Regional District
has unique learning experiences
for all learners. Students in our
special education programs have
an opportunity to hone their
skills through job sampling in
venues both in the school, such as
the Lenape School Store or the
Cherokee Annex, or through
Morning Cafs at Shawnee and
Seneca and the surrounding com-
munity. In our Transition Servic-
es Job Placement program, we
match many students with posi-
tions in local businesses. Last
year, in more than 50 different lo-
cations throughout Burlington
County, these students entered
into internships with the help of
their job shadow. These valuable
opportunities, such as our co-op
programs for all students and
many more like them, help pre-
pare teens for their next steps be-
yond high school, in a supportive
setting.

Chris Herren presentations
had lasting effect on students
CHRIS
Continued from page 2
please see DISTRICT, page 10
Chris Herren, who spoke to more
than 7,000 students and more
than 1,000 parents in nine presen-
tations about the dangers of sub-
stance abuse while telling his per-
sonal story. We felt that the tim-
ing was appropriate for our stu-
dents to build upon the strong
foundation of education for the
negative consequences of sub-
stance abuse built by the districts
Defy the Issue initiative originat-
ing in 2011. After the presenta-
tions, follow-up activities dis-
cussing the subject included the
promotion and participation in
Chris Herrens initiative named
Project Purple, which promotes
the commitment to live drug- and
alcohol-free. The Chris Herren
presentations, along with the
Defy the Issue campaign and
quality follow-up activities, pro-
vided the appropriate ingredients
for a successful initiative. The ef-
fects of Chris Herrens presenta-
tion were immediate as it made
many students reflect on how
making the right choices are vi-
tally important. One student
said, I thought about my priori-
ties and what I choose to do every
day. Another student shared his
reflection by saying, It was by far
the best assembly Ive ever seen,
and it really made me think.
Chris Herren told his story, but
consistently related to the high
school years that hit home for
many district students. One stu-
dent said that the part that made
the most impact was when Chris
Herren said, How come you
cant just be yourself on Friday
and Saturday night? Be happy
being you. Lasting effects of the
Herren presentation were also ev-
ident as students continue to
demonstrate leadership in dis-
trict programs and initiatives
needed to promote the qualities
needed to defy the use of drugs
and alcohol.
Q: What is the district hoping to
accomplish with its recently
launched Facebook page?
We hope to highlight the many
wonderful accomplishments of
our students and staff through
social media. We realize Face-
book is popular with many of the
parents or guardians of our cur-
rent and future LRHSD students
and we want to meet our parents
where they are, on Facebook or
other social media outlets. As you
can see from the posts on
www.facebook.com/LRHSDHigh-
lights, we have been piloting it for
several months to ensure we pro-
vide a balance of coverage for all
four high schools. Followers will
be able to see accomplishments,
milestones, or other unique
learning opportunities for stu-
dents and staff, which take place
during the school day and would
be otherwise unseen by the pub-
lic. What you will not see when
you follow our LRHSD Highlights
Facebook page are emergency no-
tifications. We will continue to
rely on the many other means
available, our district website
www.lrhsd.org, our district televi-
sion broadcast system LDTV,
Twitter @LRHSDstatus, or text
messaging, phone calls, etc. for
communicating emergency mes-
sages, such as school closings due
to inclement weather.
