Welcome to our very first newsletter
1
Welcome to the first edition of the Suffolk
Law SBA Executive Newsletter! We will be
publishing this newsletter each Monday as a
way to increase student engagement and
keep you all informed. If you look to the
panel on the right, you will see the features
that we will include each week: A Message
From Tom, SBA Happenings, information
about the SBA, a Student Spotlight, and an
Alumni Spotlight. On the final page of each
newsletter you will also find contact
information of the executive SBA members
and the SBA Constitution Preamble. In the
first two weeks the Student Spotlight will
cover members of our Executive Council and
then after that we will spotlight various
students from throughout the school. We
hope that you enjoy this first edition and

Tip of the week
Get Outside!
As the school year starts
back up and the cool fall
weather approaches, it is a
great time to spend some
more time outside. Studies
show that being outside and
active reduces depression,
sparks creativity, improves
concentration, promotes
healing, and can also cheer
you up and make you
happier. Make use of the
green space near Suffolk by
walking or running through
the Boston Common, the
Boston Garden, or along the
Charles River.
The SULS Running Project
will also be starting this
week, with our first meeting
on Saturday at 10am at the
law school.
What is the SBA?
This page will have a different topic each week, such as
information about what the SBA is, what the SBA does, how
decisions are made concerning things such as budgets and rules,
how to get involved, and more.
For those unfamiliar with the SBA, it is the governing body
of all students and organizations at Suffolk Law. The SBA
exists to organize events and provide resources for students
and student organizations at Suffolk Law. In addition, it
also serves as the official voice of the Suffolk Law student
body by representing your interests to the law school
administration and outside legal community.

The SBA has three foundational goals this year. First, the
SBA seeks to improve the quality of life for more students
at Suffolk Law. To accomplish this, the SBA has been hard
at work all summer planning quality programs of an
academic, professional, and social nature. Second, the SBA
seeks to help more Suffolk Law students get jobs. To
accomplish this, the SBA has planned innovative and
inclusive programs designed to highlight the true strengths
of Suffolk Law students. Finally, the SBA seeks to improve
the perception of Suffolk Law both within and without of
our community. To accomplish this, the SBA has planned
various new programs and activities that engage both the
legal and outside community.

The success of the SBA is directly dependent on student
involvement. This means that the more students who
participate, the better the year will be for everyone.
Accordingly, I encourage you all to make your voices
heard. If you have a problem, issue, or idea no matter
how small reach out to us as we are here to work for you.

Meet Tom Davis: SBA President
SBA President Tom Davis is entering his
third year at Suffolk Law. Tom, who last
year was awarded the Kahalas
Scholarship for distinguished community
service and leadership to disadvantaged
communities, overcame a childhood of
poverty and family dysfunction to
graduate from Newton North High
School and the University of Richmond.
As he enters his final year of law school,
Tom hopes to concentrate his studies on
health care law. Outside of law school,
Tom is a competitive runner and enjoys
running, cycling, road tripping, camping,
and helping others achieve success. In addition, Tom coaches runners and triathletes of all
abilities, from beginner to elite, with unmatched improvement rates.
Do you have any tips for new students?
As a general tip, Id suggest creating a long-term plan of involvement for your time at
Suffolk Law instead of just winging it. On that note, be sure to reach out to the SBA for
ways to get involved.
What are you most looking forward to in the new school year both as president and personally?
As president of the SBA Im most looking forward to connecting with the student body in
new ways to help improve more students experience at Suffolk Law. Personally, Im
looking forward to taking more specialized law school courses and learning new things in
my field of interest.
In one sentence, what is your role as SBA President?
At the end of the day, my job is to make sure that the SBA is operating to the best of its
ability and in the best interest of the student body.

Meet Monica Bellevue: SBA Vice President

SBA vice president Monica Bellevue is entering her fourth year at
Suffolk Law as an evening student. During the day she works as a
contracts manager in a legal department. Over the summer,
Monica took part in the Lund Summer Program and subsequently
stayed overseas to work in Malta.
What was your favorite part from the Lund Summer Program?
Meeting the Swedish students and the professors. They were
awesome.
What are you most looking forward to this school year?
Being able to finally buy my last law textbook in January.
What do you consider being one of the biggest challenges of being an
evening student?
Juggling all the different responsibilities at school and outside of
school at work.
Since its the start of the school year, do you have any tips for 1Ls?
Remember to take time to breathe and take a night for yourself.
Staying calm is half the battle.

Alumni Spotlight
John Nucci --- Class of 2012

John Nucci, a 2012 SULS graduate, recently finished up his term as a judicial clerk for the
Honorable Robert Cordy at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Nucci will now
bring his talents to Mintz Levin as a litigation associate in the Boston office. Nucci, who
also graduated from Suffolk undergrad as a communications major, shared some
information with us (This interview was conducted over the summer by Erin Knight, co-
director of the Alumni Affairs Committee.)
What do you consider the best part of your job as judicial clerk?
The face time the clerks are able to get with the Justices. In
particular, sitting with Justice Cordy in chambers after oral
arguments, hearing his thoughts on the days cases, and voicing
my own opinion is a pretty amazing experience. Its an insight
into the Courts process that most lawyers dont get to see, and I
have really appreciated that opportunity.
What type of attorney did you want to be upon entering Suffolk Law?
I honestly was not sure what I wanted to do when I started at
Suffolk Law. I knew that I wanted to be a litigator in some
capacity, and I definitely leaned toward criminal prosecution,
but I tried to keep a pretty open mind about what to get
involved in. I did get interested in clerking at some point in my
1L year, and started working towards that goal.
What is your greatest professional achievement?
I was an Assistant District Attorney in the Appeals Unit of the
Suffolk County District Attorneys Office before I started my
clerkship. One of my cases went to the SJC, and although I couldnt argue it, seeing it
argued and eventually decided in favor of the Commonwealth was a very proud moment
for me.
One piece of advice?
My advice would be to take advantage of the clinics, internships, and practical classes that
Suffolk offers. It gives you such a leg up in your job search to be able to say that, for
example, youve appeared in district court for a DAs office, or argued in front of the
Appeals Court. Having skills outside of the classroom is a great way to separate yourself
from the pack, and it also offers a great way to network and impress people who might be
able to help you later on.
