dayrequiretheabilityto
recognizehisorhername
independently.For
example,thechildcan
functionmore
independentlyinthe
classroomifheorshecanfindhis/her
owncubbyindependentlyuponschoolarrival.
Inaddition,namerecognitionisrelatedto
earlyreadingandwritingskills.Forexample,
accomplishmentofnamewritingisabeginningstepin
developingawarenessofthealphabeticprinciple(i.e.,
matchingsoundswithletters).Childrenlearnthat
thereisadifferencebetweenscribblingandletters
groupedtogether,thatwordsandlettershave
meaning.

Itisdifficulttoteaseaparttheprocessof
recognizingonesnameandwritingonesname,
becausethesetwodistinctskillsbuildoneachother

Developmentally,childrenwillbeabletorecognize
theirnamebeforetheycanwriteit.Despitealackof
perfecthandwriting,childrenmaystillbenefitfrom
practicingwritingtheirnamewiththeendgoalbeing
namerecognitionratherthansignatureskill.

Activities to Support Name Recognition


Placenamesofchildrenaroundtheclassroomon
cubbies,forjobassignments,onlockers,etc.
Encouragechildrentowritetheirownnameson
projects.Iftheycannot,haveanadultwritewhile
thechilddictatesletters.Theadultmayalso
encouragethechildtotraceoverhisnameonceitis
writtenbytheadult.
Encouragechildrentosigninwhenarrivinginthe
classroom.Again,tracingordictationcaneasily
modifythisactivity.
Encouragechildrentoconnectletterstheyknow
fromtheirnameswithlettersinwordstheydonot
knowtofacilitateliteracyandsoundtoletter
matching.

Encouragechildrentohelptheirpeerswith
recognizinglettersfromtheirownnames.For
example,AdamidentifiesAforBen.

Development
Demonstratewritingyourchildsname.
Haveyourchildtraceoveryourversion.Itmaybe
funtousemultiplecolorsofcrayons/markersfora
rainboweffect.
Haveyourchildtracehisnameonfinegrit
sandpaperusingchalkormarkers.
Lookatbooksinvolvingdifferentletter
identification.
Haveyourchildplaywithletterblocksand
encouragehim/hertotracetheshapeofthe
letterfollowingtheroutehewouldtaketo
writetheletteri.e.,toptobottomand
counterclockwise.
Encourageyourchildtopracticetracingor
writinghisnameonaverticalsurfacesuchasan
easelorchalkboard.
Haveyourchildformthelettersofhisname
usingrolledoutPlayDoh.
Pointoutlettersthatareinyourchildsname
whenyouaredrivingandseelettersona
billboardmakeagameoutofittoseeifyour
childcanrecognizetheletters.
Usingcardswithlettersonthem,providecards
toyourchildwiththemscrambledandhave
himtrytoplacetheminthecorrectorderto
spellhisname.
