By Jerry Fink Managing Editor A limited number of personal time capsules will be available to be placed in a small vault that will be buried near the Eufaula Dam, to be opened in 50 years. Middle School Principal Chris Whelan is creating the personal capsules out of 12-inch sections of PVC pipes. The capsules are being sold for $50 a piece and only 25 will be available. They are part of the 50th Anniversary Celebra- tion of the dedication of Eufaula Dam, which took place on Sept. 25, 1964. It was a spectacular event, with Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson giving a mem- orable speech to a throng of dignitaries and to the general public who flocked to the site below the dam to partake in the histori- cal occasion that marked the creation of the states largest lake. The upcoming celebra- tion will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Thurs- day, Sept. 25. It is a collaborative ven- ture by the Lake Eufaula Association, the Eufaula Middle School and the U.S. Army Corps of Engi- neers. Whelan is making the miniature capsules because of a deep interest in history and a desire to pass along something to future generations. My main reason for doing this was my son and daughter, Whelan said at a meeting last week of the 50th Anniversary of Lake Eufaula Dam Celebration Committee, held Aug. 27 at Churchs Chicken. The next committee meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Sept. 10 two weeks before the celebra- tion, at which former Con- gressman J.C. Watts, a native of Eufaula, will be the feature speaker. Whelan told the gather- ing he hoped his familys future generations will be there. My son and daughter, I want them to be there and my grandchildren, he said. He wants them to attend the 100th anniversary of the dams dedication, and to open the time capsules and read the messages that were sent to them from 50 years in the past. The committee was brought up to date on a number of issues, includ- ing that this week invita- tions to the celebration should be in the mail. Of particular interest is the family of the late Con- gressman Ed Edmondson, who died in 1990. If not for Ed Edmonson, the dam would not have been built, Whelan said. At least not as quickly. Edmondsons survivors include two sons, James, who is a justice on the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and Drew, former Muskogee County District Attorney and former Okla- homa Attorney General. Edmondsons brother was the late J. Howard Edmonson, former gover- nor and U.S. Senator. In other news, Whelan said the granite that will be turned into a monu- ment to be placed at the dedication site, was on a ship from China docked near Houston waiting to be unloaded. By now, the granite should be en route to the mason who will turn it into the monument, which may take a week or more. The monument is com- pliments of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who donated $3,000 toward its purchase. One of the projects by the committee is to create a field of wildflowers, Lady Bird Johnsons favorite flower. Whelan said the land is being prepared and when the time is right the wild- flowers, being provided by the Team Up to Clean Up organization, will be planted. He told the committee he needs a volunteer to pick up 100 rental chairs from a company in Musk- ogee. He said the school will provide a trailer. Activities are still in the planning stage. So far, the Eufaula High School Band and Che- cotah High School choir have confirmed they will perform. An honor guard is being sought. Connie Morris said at the start of the celebration project, $10,000 probably would be needed. So far donations include: $3,000 by the Corps of Engineers for the granite monument. $1,000 by the Checotah Chamber of Commerce. $500 from the Stigler Chamber of Commerce. $500 by the Sharpe Family. $1,200 from a contest sponsored by the LEA during Whole Hawg Days. Commitments include: $500 from Save Our Water. $500 from OG&E. $300 from the City of Eufaula for a welcome banner. $250 in printing by Sti- gler Printing. Mr. Printer donated cutting invitations. Eufaula Dam celebration committee reaches out to the future Checotah FFA members competed recently at the 30th National Junior Beef- master Show in Shawnee. Kylee Henderson, Luke White and Cassie Barnard all exhibited their cattle during the weeklong event, held July 28 - Aug. 3 Henderson had the 2014 National Champion Bull. With over 350 Beefmas- ter entries from across the United States, it was Kylee and her bred-and-owned bull named Legend of Zeus with the championship win. Earlier in the day Kylie Henderson, Luke White and Cassie Barnard all showed their heifers. These heifers were raised by each of the individual exhibitors out of previous show heifers. Cassie Barnard won her class while Luke White placed 4th. All of these students are the grandchildren to RL and Lorene Anderson, who own Lazy A Beefmas- ters along with son Bobby Anderson and Daughter Laurie Anderson Banard. This is the second National Title for the family. In 1990 Kylees moth- er Laurie exhibited the Reserve National Champi- on Simmental Heifer at the National Western Livestock Show held in Denver Colo- rado. The National Western is the largest livestock show in the country and is the hardest to win. Winning however has not been isolated to just these two national titles. Kylees National Champion Show Bull is the son of a past show heifer named Sunflower. Sunflower was originally shown by Kylees older sister Ashley Hen- derson since a heifer can be shown for two years when Ashley graduated she transferred ownership to her younger sister. In total, Sunflower was named Grand Champion Beefmaster Heifer at the Ark-Ok State Fair, Tulsa State Fair and Oklahoma Youth Expo in 2011. Then in 2012 Sunflow- er repeated that amazing accomplishment winning all three Oklahoma state shows under the showman- ship of little sister Kylee. These wins make Sun- flower the only heifer ever known who has won the breed championship at all three Oklahoma state shows for both years of her show eligibility. Legend of Zeus is the first calf out of Sunflower and was sired by a herd bull owned by Lazy A Beefmas- ters, which is Uncle Bobby Anderson and Grandfather RL Anderson. Also this summer Checo- tah FFA has had students attend two weeks of Okla- homa FFA Alumni Camp. Those students were Alli- son Carson, Zach Ilbery, Juleah Hollingshed and Brilan Oxtoby. Checotah FFA students also attended three weeks of Cattle Camp on the cam- pus of Connors State Col- lege where they learned how to fit, groom, feed and show their livestock. Luke White, Kylee Hen- derson, Cassie Barnard, Dakota Cantrell, Maddison Mitchell and Morgan States all participated in one of three weeks of Be A Champ Cattle Camp. Checotah FFA Students along with their ag teacher also taught a summer in service at the Vision 20/20 Conference held in Okla- homa City. The Conference was designed to give teachers and administrators the opportunity to learn teach- ing methods used by others across the state. The Checotah FFA work- shop was based on the Checotah FFA Community Garden and how the soil and plants can be utilized to teach CORE Curriculum. The workshop was attended by teachers and administrators from across Oklahoma as well as Ag Teachers from Texas and New Mexico. Both Che- cotah high School princi- pals Mr. Terry and Mrs. Frame were in attendance as well as Mrs. Ledbetter who helped start the out- door classroom and Mrs. Vandiver. These admin- istrators were able to see their own Checotah FFA students speak as curricu- lum educators and trainers at a state wide event. Checotah FFA is also gearing up for a whirlwind of FFA activities kicking of the week of Aug 11th with the Chapter Officer Retreat and then entries are due for the upcoming fall fairs.
