BMS F30 Stage1 & JB4 Install Guide

1/2/2014

All use subject to terms and conditions posted at burgertuning.com/terms

1) Disconnect negative battery terminal in the trunk by removing the 10mm bolt.

2) Remove the plastic engine cover. The cover simply lifts off. Also remove the passenger side cowl cover which is
secured by 3 10mm plastic release bolts. Turning the bolts 90 degrees each will release the tab and allow you to pull
the cover off.

3) The JB4 harness is divided in to 4 "connectors" each with its own wire color. Rainbow, Brown, Purple, and Blue. In
addition there are 4 "Stage2" wires next to the control box which are green, brown, red, and black.

Note that for Stage1 you will be installing Rainbow and Brown only. For JB4 you will be installing all but purple & in
some models blue is not used.

4) The TMAP sensor is located on the driver side of the engine bay, on the charge pipe leading in to the throttle body.
Disconnect the TMAP sensor plug and plug it in to the JB female rainbow connection. Plug the male rainbow
connection in to the TMAP sensor completing the loop.

5) The MAP sensor is located on the top of the engine towards the back. It is visually identical to the TMAP sensor.
Disconnect the MAP sensor plug and plug it in to the JB female brown connection. Plug the male brown connection in
to the MAP sensor completing the loop.

6) Note that if installing a Stage1 system only the TMAP and MAP connectors are installed. The rest of the connectors
and wires can not be installed and instead must be tucked out of the way. Stage1 and the JB4 use different control
boxes so if installing a JB4 then you must connect all wires. You CAN NOT make JB4 a Stage1 by failing to install
the rest of the wires.

7) The purple harness connection is not used for the F series. This harness patch can be tucked out of the way.

8) The blue patch will be installed for JB4 applications where there is a pneumatic solenoid only. Those with the
newer electronic solenoid will not install this cable. Note that models not equipped with the solenoid will simply have
nothing in this spot below. Like the first two connections you unplug the OEM connector and connect it to the JB4
blue harness male, and then plug the JB4 blue female on to the solenoid.

9) The long green and brown CAN wires will extend over to the CAN access point on the driver side shock tower. We
suggest twisting the wires together making a twisted pair and then routing that pair under the rubber seal above the
cowl covers. Alternatively it can be zip-tied to the JB harness itself or simply left sitting across the engine.

10) Review the directions for using the removable quick connections below. If needed practice on an extra wire so you
get a feeling for how they install and remove. It's pretty simple once you've done it.

11) Using the included removable quick connects attach the brown wire to the right most CAN wire as shown. The one
right below the thick red power wire.

12) Using the included removable quick connects attach the green wire to next spot immediately to the left of the first
wire.

* Manual transmission cars: your CAN wires are in a different spot. Refer to the MT CAN wire section at the bottom
of this guide.

13) Connect the black grounding wire to the shock tower or any other suitable chassis ground.

13) Finally, connect the red power wire to the jumper battery position next to the control box. Note a T50 torx bit is
required to unscrew the connection.

14) Placement of the JB control box is critical as it must be kept in a generally dry location. We suggest positioning it
so that it is parallel with the strut brace as shown below. When the plastic cover is reinstalled this position will prevent
water damage to the control box. The optional USB cable should generally only be installed when doing diagnostics.
When not doing diagnostics remove it from the control box. Alternatively it can be left installed full time and routed
through the firewall in to the glove box by removing a rubber plug and cutting a small hole in the interior carpet as
shown below.

For those in extremely wet areas or those who wish to run without the engine covers you can also cover the JB control
box with a plastic membrane such as a zip lock bag or other suitable water tight cover. Heat dissipation is not an issue
with the control box.

When reinstalling the cowl cover be sure it's fully seated and that you've lifted the rubber seal around it. Failure to
properly secure this cover may result in water damage to your JB4.

15) Reconnect negative battery terminal.

Installation is complete! Refer to N54tech for any additional install notes and info.

For the Stage1 there is no map changing or adjustment that can be done. Just drive and enjoy.

For the JB4 refer to additional directions on n54tech if you are interested in connecting a laptop to the JB4. Note the
JB4 has cold oil temperature protection built in and it will remain off until oil temps are greater than 160 degrees and
the oil is thin enough to properly lubricate the turbo at higher boost levels. Also note the JB4 is an adaptive tune so it
will learn and adjust as you drive/race around.

Quick connect directions:

Manual Trans CAN wires:

The manual transmission F30 has its CAN wires located in a bundle leading to the ECU. Remove the small piece of
tape holding the bundle together and fish out the blue/red-blue wire pair and connect as shown.

Stage1->Stage2 harness upgrade. Adding in those extra required wires.

Review the N55 S1->S2 harness upgrade directions and insert wires in appropriate DB25 positions. Verify position
(small numbering) before pushing wire in as you can not remove wire without a DSUB removal tool from Radio
Shack or Fry's Electronics.

Positions are as follows:

Green wire - position 2
Brown wire - position 15
Red wire - position 22
Black wire - position 10

Note the green and brown wires must also be extended. Included in the upgrade kit are two longer wires and wire nuts
to attach them.
