Paintings, Pots And Performance
Te Slocan Lake Gallery Society presents a group art ex-
hibition Inspired by Nature: Te Slocan Valley at the Hid-
den Garden Gallery in New Denver from September 10 to
21. Opening night is Friday, September 12 from 7 to 9:30
pm, and will be a literary and musical evening with poet-
ry and prose readings, music and a powerful dance and
drum performance. Refreshments will be served.
With over 25 of our fnest local artists and crafs people
collaborating to make this an energy-flled, exciting exhib-
ition, Slocan Valley (and a couple of Kaslo) visual artists
will be showing new works in several mediums: paintings
in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media; sculpture in clay,
carved rock, mosaic, mixed media. Also jewellery, cedar
weaving, fbre arts including some incredible weaving and
fabric submissions, masks, illustration, and photography.
Most works will be for sale, including larger, more expen-
sive works and some very afordable such as art cards and
smaller paintings. Our natural environment is sacred to
many artists, who are inspired by its wonders. Te art and
performances refect this reverence.
Gallery hours are 10 am to 12 noon and 2 to 4 pm every
day from September 10 to 21. Hidden Garden Gallery is
located at 803 Kildare Street in downtown New Denver.

Anna Grace McLean
Passed away August 29, 2014
Born on July 14, 1936.
As a child, Anna lived in the Pend DOreille Valley;
she moved to Fruitvale in her teens. She passed
away peacefully with her family by her side af-
ter suffering a stroke and a battle with cancer.
Anna was a very strong and hardworking
woman who cared for her family very much.
She was always loading up the grandkids
into the motorhome and taking the kids to
Fort Steele or Rock Creek Fair or somewhere
else. Anna enjoyed curling, horseback riding,
slo-pitch and mostly her children and grandchil-
dren. She looked after the family business, NDB
Trucking, until her health declined.
Anna is survived by her husband Neil; sons Ron
of Fruitvale, Len (Donna) of Fruitvale; daughter Shelly (Sid) of Salmo; sis-
ters Irene (Don) Hill of Robson, Kathy (Jack) Seville of Robson; brothers Gary
(Diane) Buckley of Camrose AB, Hugh (Shirley) Buckley of Pend DOreille
Valley; Fred (Janice) Buckley of Pend DOreille Valley; 8 grandchildren,
7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no service at her request. A family gathering will be
set at a later date. She will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of owers, donations can be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society.

Te Lower Columbia Region is thriving! Te most recent
economic statistic in a series of published metrics highlight-
ing our thriving economy is the number of jobs posted in
the Lower Columbia Region. From January through August
2014 there have been 1,040 diferent employment oppor-
tunities posted at the Community Skills Centre! Wanted ads
ranged from Licensed Practical Nurses to Power Engineers.
Tis metric really highlights the fact that our amazing re-
gion is a great place to live, work, and play.
Terry Van Horn, Economic Development Coordinator for

CVWMA Interpretive Centre
Youre invited to a free open house and discussion about
the future of the Interpretive Centre at the Creston Valley
Wildlife Management Area on Monday, September 15.
Join the discussion at the Creston & District Community
Complex, 312-19 Avenue North. Te discussion is focused
on the Interpretive Centres programs and venue only and
does not address operations and management of the Wild-
life Management Area. Tere are fve potential options
being considered for the centre, ranging from rebuilding
to re-imagining it entirely. Te Interpretive Centre Com-
mittee hopes that residents will attend the drop-in open
house as well as the presentation/discussion and share their
ideas. Te open house is part of a six month long commun-
ity engagement process that included personal interviews
with key individuals, focus groups and phone surveys. Te
community research phase will conclude at the end of Sep-
tember. Te committee will then consider the input for the
preferred options and assess the next steps to defne how
the centre functions in the future.
On Monday, September 15, the drop-in open house is
from 4 pm to 7 pm, and the presentation/discussion is
from 7 pm to 9 pm. Mark your calendars and plan to attend
to give your input!
Survey Says.....
Lower Columbia (Trail, Rossland, Warfeld, Montrose,
Fruitvale, Area A and B) residents will be asked to par-
ticipate in a regional survey to provide input regarding
the priorities and specifc actions to help guide the Lower
Columbia Community Development Team Society (LCC-
DTS) in allocating $600,000 in funding, over the next three
years under the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community
Directed Funds (CDF) Program.
Te LCCDTS has launched the development of the Low-
er Columbia Priorities Plan, which will establish the key
strategic priorities that will provide the committee with
direction on how to distribute these funds which must
fulfll the CBTs mandate and the CDF vision. Te man-
date of the CBT is to support eforts by the people of the
Basin to create a legacy of social, economic and environ-
mental well-being and to achieve greater self-suf ciency
for present and future generations; and the vision of the
CDF committee is a stronger Lower Columbia Commun-
ity through investment in creative initiatives. Te Whistler
Centre for Sustainability has been hired to guide the plan-
ning and public engagement process.
As a Committee, we want to get the funds out work-
ing for the community, focused on what residents say is
important and where they will have the greatest impact,
said Bruce LeRose, CDF Committee Chair. To achieve
this, we are dedicated to delivering a public consultation
process that is ef cient, open and transparent. Te process
will bring our communities together to provide input to the
committee on where the funds should be allocated.
A public survey is the frst opportunity for the public to
provide input, with a number of community events and
focus groups to come in October.
Te short 10-minute survey asks residents a number of
questions about the Lower Columbia, including their pri-
orities for spending a half million dollars. Te input will be
used to inform the development of the strategic priorities
to guide the allocation of the $600,000. Te survey clos-
es September 21. Lower Columbia residents who take the
survey can enter for a chance to win one of two $75 gif
certifcates to Ferraro Foods.

Language Opens New Worlds
Its one of the most important foundations of a shrinking
world. Teaching English as an additional language is vital to
commerce, community and creating conversations between
cultures.
Tis October, BC Teachers of an Additional Language
(BC TEAL) will hold its 2014 Interior Regional Conference
at the Selkirk College, Nelson, Tenth Street Campus. More
than 100 teachers, administrators and community leaders
will take in the one-day event at Mary Hall.
People are always going to want to learn English, thats
the bottom line, says Tyler Ballam, the Selkirk College in-
structor who is heading up the organization of the confer-
ence. How thats delivered is where there is the dialogue.
Te theme for the conference is Interior Designs: Building
Teaching and Learning Communities. Te idea of building
connections throughout communities is central to the con-
ference concept, considering most in attendance work in
areas far removed from the Lower Mainland.
Tough immigration is more pronounced in the larger
urban centres, Ballam says his colleagues face similar chal-
lenges and put forward similar goals.
You are not just a teacher, he says. For many of these
students you are their frst point of contact when they come
to Canada. You are representing Canada and the place you
live because they are dealing with culture shock. Tat adds
to the stress because you are not just teaching a language,
you are important to their lives, their success and their hap-
piness.
Dr. Scott Douglas, a University of British Columbia in-
structor and author, will be the plenary speaker at the BC
TEAL conference in Nelson. Tere will also be a number of
other presentations and group discussions involved during
the day-long event.
Ballam says its important to bring together a group of
people who are working towards the same goal of helping
improve communication across borders and cultures.
Teachers talk about diferent perspectives on how to
teach diferent cultures, he says. Its not just ESL, its really
just working with international students in variety of con-
texts.

In the fall of 2013, Shannon Isaac, Kaslo & Area D Youth
Coordinator of North Kootenay Lake Community Servi-
ces Society (NKLCSS), was granted funds from the Youth
Grants Program by Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and Com-
munity Recreation Project by RDCK Area D to revolu-
tionize the youth room at the Lardeau Valley Community
Centre (LVCC). Tis project involved many community
volunteers, Marc and Cari Lamoureux, Andy Pritchard,
Sandra and Ray Rempel, Eliscia and Caileigh Somers,
Janice Neil, Deb Ogilvie, Jenny Schroeder, Jordan Hill, Den-
nis Sahs and Rob Leiper, three youth participants and two
mentors to design and paint a mural, install laminate foors,
and purchase a brand new sectional for the youth room.
Many months and volunteer hours later we are delighted
to announce the youth room makeover is done! Its time to
celebrate all our hard work and the youth living at the north
end of Kootenay Lake; and to welcome Yvonne Boyd, the
new Youth Programmer at the North End of Kootenay Lake.
North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society
(NKLCSS) recently hired Yvonne Boyd to develop and
deliver youth activities, programs and events throughout
the fall at the north end of Kootenay Lake. We have lots to
look forward to this fall.
Keep your eyes peeled for posters with the details of our
upcoming grand opening of the youth room on Saturday
September 13. Tis will be a day of games, bowling, and
yummy food for everyone and its totally free! Tis would
be a great time to let Yvonne know what you want to see
happening for fall activities and programs at the north
end of Kootenay Lake.
