The ACT Health GP Development Fund — Round 1
Applications for Round 1 of the GP Development Grants open on
Tuesday 8 December 2009 and close at 5.00pm, Friday 26 February 2010.
The GP Development Fund is a four year bi-annual grants pool totalling
$4 million for general practices that commit to supporting the attraction,
retention and development of the general practice workforce, through
providing:
• p
 ractice infrastructure grants to support and maintain the general practice
workforce;
• support for teaching and learning at all levels in general practice; and
• support for ideas to attract and retain the general practice workforce.
While it is anticipated that most funding applications will not exceed $50,000,
greater sums may be awarded for exceptional proposals. Furthermore, no
proposal will be considered too small and all general practices in the ACT are
eligible to apply.

H1N1 Influenza ‘09 vaccine
The Pandemic H1N1 Influenza ‘09 vaccine (Panvax®) has now been registered
by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA) for children aged six months
to nine years. This registration follows rigorous evaluation of clinical trial
data by the regulator and review by the expert Australian Drug Evaluation
Committee (ADEC).
The vaccine for children aged 36 months to nine years is available from
GPs and vaccination clinics now and the lower dose prefilled syringe for
children aged six months to 35 months will be available within the next two
weeks. Children under 10 years of age will require two doses of the vaccine
administered at least 28 days apart.
People who are travelling overseas where pandemic influenza is now prevalent
and the vaccine in short supply, are particularly at risk and should ensure they

are vaccinated. Even one dose for children will give good protection against
this disease. A second dose is needed for longer protection.
Parents should consider getting their children vaccinated before the start of
the new school year to ensure their children are protected in the event of an
early upsurge in pandemic H1N1 influenza in late summer or early autumn.
While the vaccine is not registered for children under six months of age, the
most important thing parents can do is to ensure other members of the family
are vaccinated to limit their baby’s potential exposure to the virus.
All people are urged to take advantage of the current availability of free
pandemic flu vaccine over the coming holiday season. Pandemic H1N1
influenza ’09 remains a threat and all Australians are encouraged to get
vaccinated to protect both themselves and those who are vulnerable in
the community.
