You are advised to spend 40 minutes writing an essay on your chosen topic in this booklet.
Write clearly and coherently about at least TWO short written texts that you have studied.
Write about ONE of the following text types:
EITHER:
short stories
poetry (or song lyrics)
print media (or blogs)
short hyper-ction
Choose ONE of topics 1-14. Make sure that your chosen topic suits the texts.
Choose ONE topic.
Write an essay of AT LEAST 300 words for your answer.
Make sure you answer ALL parts of the topic.
Support your discussion with specic evidence from at least TWO texts.
GENERAL TOPICS
You can use one of these topics to write about any type of short written text. The texts you write about
could be the same text type (eg two poems) or different text types (eg a poem and a short story).
1. Analyse how the writer develops (an) important idea(s) for a particular purpose in at least TWO
short texts you have studied.
2. Analyse how the writer develops the personality of an important character for a particular
purpose in at least TWO short texts you have studied.
3. Analyse how the writer uses language techniques for a particular purpose in at least TWO short
texts you have studied.
4. Analyse how the writer uses setting(s) for a particular purpose in at least TWO short texts you
have studied.
(Note: setting be the social, geographical or historical setting, or a combination of these).
5. Analyse how the writer uses the beginning AND/OR ending for a particular purpose in at least
TWO short texts you have studied.
6. Analyse how the writer engages the reader/ listener for a particular purpose in at least TWO
short texts you have studied.
SHORT STORY TOPICS
The texts you write about must BOTH be short stories.
7. Analyse the effect of techniques to show conict in at least TWO short stories you have
studied.
8. Analyse the effects of the narrative style in at least TWO short stories you have studied.

POETRY AND /OR SONG LYRIC TOPICS
The texts you write about could be two poems, or two song lyrics, or one poem and one
song lyric.
9. Analyse how the writer uses techniques to appeal to our emotions in at least TWO poems/
song lyrics you have studied.
10. Analyse how the writer helps us understand ideas about a certain time or place in at least
TWO poems/ song lyrics you have studied.
PRINT MEDIA AND BLOG TOPICS
The texts you write about could be two print media texts, or two blogs, or one print media and
one blog.
11. Analyse how the writers style appeals to the target audience in at least TWO print media or
blog texts you have studied.
12. Analyse how the writer combines facts and opinions for a purpose in at least TWO print
media or blog texts you have studied.
SHORT HYPERFICTION TOPICS
The texts you write about must BOTH be short hyperction.
13. Analyse how the writer uses techniques to keep the readers interest in at least TWO
short hyperction texts you have studied.
14. Analyse how the writer uses contrast for a particular purpose in at least TWO short
hyperction texts you have studied.
