DESIGN OF MACHINE MEMBERS - I
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
*****
1 (a) Discuss various considerations in the design of machine members.
(b) A shaft supported between bearings of 1 meter apart. It carries a prelley at the centre and
weighs 1kN. Find the diameter of shaft if the limiting value of shear stress is 20 MPa. The shaft
is running at 700 RPM transmitting 5kw.

2 (a) What are the various methods of reducing stress concentration?
(b) Find the diameter of a shaft to transmit twisting moments varying from 800 Nm to 1600 Nm.
The ultimate tensile strength for the material is 600 MPa and yield stress is 450 MPa. Assume:
stress concentration factor =1.2 surface finish factor =0.8 size factor =0.85.

3 Design a Lap joint for a M.S. flat tie bar 200mm10mm thick, using 24mm diameter rivets.
Allowable stresses in tension and compression of the plate material as 112 MPa and 200 MPa
respectively and shear stress in rivets as 84 MPa. Show the drawing with rivet arrangement for
maximum efficiency and determine the joint efficiency. Take the diameter of rivet hole as
25.5mm for a 24mm diameter rivet.

4 (a) Describe various types of locking devices.
(b) A steam engine of effective diameter 300mm is subjected to a steam pressure of 1.5N/mm
2

.
The cylinder head is connected by 8 bolts, having a yield point of 330 MPa and endurance limit
at 240 MPa. The bolts are tightened with an initial preload of 1.5 times the steam load. A soft
copper gasket is used to make the joint leak proof. Assuming a factor of safety 2, find the size
of bolt required. The stiffness factor for copper gasket may be taken as 0.5.

5 (a) What is purpose gib is a cotter joint? What is a splime?
(b) Design a sleeve and cotter joint to resist a tensile load of 60kn. All parts are made of same
material with the following safe stresses.

6 A mild steel shaft transmits 20 kw at 200 rpm. It carries a central load of 900N and is simply
supported between bearings 2.5m apart. Determine the size of shaft, if the permissible shear
stress 42 MPa and tensile stress is 56 MPa. What size of shaft is required, if it is subjected to
gradually applied loads.

7 Two 40mm shafts are connected by a flange coupling. The flanges are fitted with 6 bolts on
125mm circle. The shafts transmit 800 Nm torque at 350 RPM. Find the safe stress mentioned
below. Calculate: (1) Diameter of bolts. (2) Thickness of flanges. (3) Key dimensions.
(4) Hub length. (5) Power transmitted. The allowable shear stress for shaft is 63MPa; for
bolts is 56MPa; for key is 46MPa and for cast iron flange is 12MPa.

8 Write short notes on design procedure:
(a) Leaf springs. (b) Springs in fatigue loading.
