Running Agility

Agility is the ability to change the direction of the body or body parts
rapidly. Two types of agility have been reported: one involving running
and one that does not. The later is commonly referred to as dynamic
fexibility.
Running agility is measured with running tests that require the subject
to turn or start and stop. These are part of general motor ability or
tness test and running speed is related to this ability.
There is a common problem with these running agility tests: they can
be performed better with practice. !n successive trials" the best
performances are given after #$% trials. &o in order to ma'e this an
e(cient test" subjects should practice before being tested. )loor
traction and maneuverability are other problems encountered with
these tests. *roper shoes and surfaces are necessary.
Two tests are described here: shuttle run and +ig+ag run.
Timed Shuttle Run Test
Objective: to start" sprint" and stop as fast as possible when running
a specied course.
Validity: construct
Equipment: foor space to allow traction" stop watches accurate to
,-,.
th
sec" two bloc's or cones per test station.
Procedure: the test course is comprised of two parallel lines placed
on the foor /. feet apart. &ubject starts behind the rst line" and after
the start command" runs to the second line" pic's up an object" runs
bac' to the rst line" and places the object behind the line. The
subject then runs bac' to pic' up a second object" which is carried
bac' across the rst line.
Scoring: the score is the elapsed time to the nearest ,-,.
th
sec. The
watch is started on the word 01o"2 and stopped when the second
object is carried across the rst line.
