DESCRIPTION Inthiscoursewewillbuildskillsandknowledgeyoucoulduseforaprofessionalcareerin
videoproductionandmedia.Youwilllearnhowtouseprofessionalvideoequipment,sound
equipment,andeditingsoftware.Overtheyear,youwillmakevideosandputthemtogether
intoaprofessionalportfolioofvideocontent.Youcanusethisportfoliotoapplyforrealworld
jobsandinternships.Mostofourworkwillbeinteamsandyouwillcreateavarietyofvideo
projectsondeadlineforbroadcastonKDOLTV.Topicsoftheclassincludecameracontrols
andeditinginFinalCutPro,journalismandmedialiteracy,videoproductionrolesand
vocabulary,andcareerreadinessinthemediafield.
OBJECTIVES Inthiscourse,wewillbeexploringtheworldoffilmmakingandbroadcastjournalism.
StudentswillexamineTVnews,film,andothermediasourcesandlearntoproducetheirown
shortfilmsandnewsstories.Youwilldiscoverthelanguageoffilmandlearncreative
storytellingskills.
Uponcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:

REQUIREMENTS

Therearenoprerequisitesforthiscourse.Theonlyrequirementsarethatyoucometoclass
readytowork,stayengagedinclassprojects,andtreateveryoneintheclasswithrespect.
Studentsareexpectedtocommunicatewiththeteacherviaphone,text,oremail(contact
informationabove)iftheyneedtomissaclassorarerunninglate.Anocallnoshowwill
resultinanunexcusedabsence.3unexcusedabsencesinasemesterwillresultinan
automaticfailinggradefromtheclass.3unexcusedtardiesequaloneunexcusedabsence.

Listencarefullytootherstudents,potentialoractualsubjects,teachers,etc.
Useallequipmentcheckoutandcheckinproceduresproperly.

Ifyourealizethisclassisjustasimportantasyourotherclassesandtreatitas
such,youwilldoverywell.
Assignmentswillbegivendeadlines.Assignments/Projectshandedinlatewillbepenalized
10pointsperdayandwillnotbeacceptedafterfivedayslate.Someassignmentsmay
requiretheequipmentandsoftwareatthestudio.Forthisreason,thehourof3:304:30is
reservedforindependentworktime,andtherewillbeadditionalOpenLabTimeat
KDOLonWednesday,from15pmforstudentswhowishtomakeupworkorpursuetheir
ownprojects.Studentswhowishtoattendanopenlabshouldmakearrangementswith
KDOLstaffaheadoftime.
Weareextremelyluckytobeabletoofferstateoftheartprofessionalvideoequipmentand
geartostudentstouseinclassand,later,forcheckingoutonfieldshoots.Itisimperative
thatallstudentshandleKDOLcamerasandothergearwithcareandrespect.Anyevidence
ofmisconductormistreatmentofourgearorourstudiowillresultin:

Studentswillbeprovidedwithafolderinwhichtokeepnotes,worksheetsandothermaterials,
aswellasapersonalflashdrivewhichwillliveatKDOL,tobeusedtotransportfilesforclass.
Youwillonlygetoneflashdrive.Donotloseit.Therewillbeacheckattheendofevery
classtomakesureallflashdrivesareaccountedfor.

Berkeleytohelpteachyouthebusinesssideofmedia.Wellgoovereverythingfrom
resumewritingtosocialmediastrategy,andbytheendoftheyearyoullcreatea
portfoliowebsitethatcontainsthefilmsyouworkedonduringtheyearaswellasa
videoreelofyourbestwork.
