Magazine Research

Research the genre- conventions of the magazines within your chosen genre

Examples of existing titles within the genre- Four Four Two which is related to Englands formation
that will be applied in the world cup. Sport to show the magazine is about all sports and just not one
sport which will make more people want to read the magazine. Total Football to show the magazine is all
about football and not any other sport.
Analyse a cover, contents page and double page spread from an existing title within your genre. Here is a
cover page, contents page and a double page spread. They are based on football magazines as that is my
target market. Football fans.

Magazine Research
The Masthead used on FourFourTwo
magazines differ to the main story of
the magazine. This magazine is
specialised on the world cup and that
is why the title is red as it represents
Englands football kit. They are
looking for a themed colour for the
magazine so they try and make as
many things red as possible as
Englands football kit is red.
Below the masthead is some
information on what the magazine is
going to be about. This information is
on a gold background to make the
writing stand out to, to show that the
world cup is a big competition. It
attracts attention to show that the
magazine is going to be discussing an
issue within the magazine. They are
talking about Englands issue in the
world cup.
Above the masthead is
information about the
magazine and what date
it is published, a website
URL to allow you to look
at different magazines
FourFourTwo have
made. This information
is important to sell their
product. The title is also
placed right at the top
because if a magazine is
sold in a shop and the
magazine is stacked
behind another
magazine, you can still
see the tittle so people
still know what the
magazine is about. This
will also help them with
sales as if the title was
lower people wouldnt
know what the
magazine is about and
just ignore looking at it.
The barcode is placed at the
bottom right of the magazine and is
small and discreet because it wont
affect the aesthetics of the design
The central visual interest (CVI) is
Wayne Rooney in this football
magazine as in the world cup
Rooney is the main striker that
will score goals and help England
do good in the world cup. They
also have Rooney with his boots
around his neck to show people
that these boots are special and
that they will bring him good
fortune in scoring goals. There is
also a small England flag on his
boot to show he is dedicated to
England and will do anything to
help them win.
The use of a big bold heading shows
clearly what the concentration of the
magazine. There is also a small quote
above ENGLAND to make people want
to read it because it makes people feel
that they are inspired by the magazine.
The players are facing the camera to
show that they arent afraid of the
big task ahead. To do well in the
world cup, to make fans happy. They
are also showing no facial
expression to show that they are
serious about doing well in the
world cup.

Magazine Research 2
This magazine is about
Sport, which is the title. A
very simple title. It indicates
the magazine is going to full
of information and facts and
not for little kids; it is for
true football fans. The title
is just left of centre to show
that the magazine is all
about the main figure on
the magazine. Gareth Bale.
He is doing his famous
gesture to symbolise his
passion for football and he
is going to express his
thoughts and feelings in this
magazine.
The use of colour graphology works well
as the themed colour is blue and white
writing represents the magazine to be
good and interesting. The writing stands
out well with a blue background and
white writing.
The magazine shows a glimpse of a
football goal as Gareth Bale plays
football and they want to show that
he is at home when he is playing
football. It also shows the audience
that he is dedicated to football and
they want to express that in the
magazine.
This logo is the selling point for all of the
sport magazines. When the magazine
is stacked behind other magazines you
can still see the title of the magazine
and that is why it is placed right at the
top of the magazine because all you
need to see is there logo and you know
it will be a great magazine about sport.
The central visual interest (CVI) of this
magazine is Gareth Bale. He is placed
perfectly in the middle of the magazine.
He is the first thing that attracts your
attention as soon as you look at the
magazine. Which is a good thing as the
magazine is all about him. That might be
a reason why the title and the other
information isnt a big font, as they
want you to straight away look at
Gareth Bale.
The title is a great opener for the book
to be a great seller. The use of capital
letters WILD AT HEART indicates that
Bale feels he is at the prime of his game.
He feels he is turning into a different
better player. Which is why the title
portrays the image that Bale is turning
into a different creature to suggest he
feels he is really developing as a
footballer?

Contents Page Analysis
Black, white and red colour scheme
makes the contents easy on the it
eyes, consistent with the front
cover.
Messi is again a big image on the
front cover; it makes the front
content page attractive.
The writing on the
contents page is set out
in columns, the main
text which has their own
category blocks labelled
with titles and numbers
next to them. This
feature denotes what is
inside the magazine and
what pages to go to.
Main text is
mainly sans-
serif font
because its a
modern text
for a
magazine.
There is always
a main image on
the contents
page which links
to the main
story of the
magazine, in
this case the
main image is a
photograph of a
professional
footballer
called Messi
and the
interview
FourFourTwo
had with him.
Smaller images on the contents
page link to other stories featured
in the magazine, these smaller
images mentioned are the ones
underneath Messi and on the right
hand page.
The reuse of page
numbers and captions
linking to stories in
different fonts and
colours to make them stand
out to the reader, the page
number always comes before
the text and follows with
a few words about the
article.
On the contents page the website is featured
at the bottom left hand corner next to
the page and issue date as its least
important to the reader. However, this
convention is still used on the page to
promote the magazines website and
show recognition to the brand name.

Double Page Spread Analysis

This image is the main part of
this double page spread and
that is the reason it is really
big. From this image you can
tell it is about this player with
the ball, the magazine will be
about this person and his
football story of this.
This image is smaller because it is a smaller
story within the magazine. It shows a picture
of the manager, so it shows he is
commenting about his player and how Can
Hessie complete gills impressive revival?
which is the title of the magazine. The
manager is commenting on if he can help his
team to victory.
Blue is the colour scheme of this
magazine, it I shown that the
designers have used this colour as a
clear colour scheme, they have used
it in the main title under the main
image of the double page spread
and they have used it down the side
of the page and used the same
colour in all of the sub titles.
They have used 2 pull quotes in this
article because they this is as
important information within this
sport magazine.
Page Harmony

The first hotspot is near
the line of Rooneys left
eye. As he is in front of the
other players so he is the
first thing you look at when
looking at this magazine.
They have done the
magazine like this because
Rooney is the main player
in Englands squad; he is
the best hope for England
doing well in the world
cup. This is why he is in the
middle of the magazine.
The second hotspot is
in the line of the
Englands badge, this
is because the
designers want to
emphasise the fact
this is Englands
chance to win the
world cup. They
wont readers to look
at the badge and
remember it as it
could be a special
competition for
England.
The first triangle sector is
spot on the starting letter of
the title in the masthead.
This is placed like this so it is
eye catching for readers.
The second triangle sector is
spot on the second letter of
the title in the masthead.
The third
triangle sector
is spot on the
third and
fourth letters
in the word
Four of the
title in the
masthead.
The box within the
hotspots is placed
perfectly on the face and
body of Wayne Rooney,
and also includes the
boots hang around his
neck. This is because the
boots indicate that it is
his responsibility on
England to perform in
the world cup, the boots
means that he is
confident that he will do
well for England and that
these are special boots
that he will be using in
the world cup.

The hotspots make
a rectangle shape
which is inside the
famous celebration
of Gareth Bale
which is an icon to
many people in
football. The
celebration is
perfectly in the
centre of the
magazine cover,
which makes the
magazine look good
and professional.
The starting letter of the title is within the
first triangle in the masthead. The title is in
the top left corner because it is eye catching
for reads and then it wont ruin the main
focus of the magazine which is Gareth Bale.

The second
triangle sector is
slightly on the
second letter of
the title in the
masthead.
The third triangle
sector is spot on the
third and fourth
letters in the word
Four of the title in
the masthead.
Colour palettes -3 examples of colour palettes you may use. Add examples from your genre.
Red would be used in my magazine as my magazine is about England and he world cup so the title and the
colour of the footballer shirt would be red as this represents Englands kit. White would be used as a
background colour to make the writing and the images stand out. And Black would be some text colour along
with red. Red would be used in the masthead.

Blue is used in the background to represent the colour of the sky as in one of the magazines Bale is on the
training ground holding a football to make good images of football and to also set the mood of the
magazine to be a calm magazine. If the magazine was going to full of facts then the background would have
been black at night. White is the colour of the text as it goes well on a blue background. Green is the colour
of the grass also on the background

This colour pallet will be used in a Golf magazine. This is because red associates the colour of Tiger Woods
famous red shirt on the final day of a competition. This is attractive for the target audience. White would be
used as a background so it makes the main image of the front cover of the magazine stands out. Green is used
for the colour of the grass on the fairway of a golf course. This colour pallet all combines together to make a
great golf front cover.

This colour pallet will be used in my world cup magazine. This is because red symbolises Englands football kit
as well as white as they are the home and away kits. And yellow represents brazil as brazil are the host nation
of the world cup so it is important to involve them in my magazine even though it is about England, it could be
a memorable destination for Englands football squad.
Fonts- five examples of the type of font you may use. Add examples from your genre.

These fonts are all attractive for a football magazine. They are bold and good for a magazine. They will
catch your eye when looking at it in a shop, if these fonts where used for a magazine it will definitely make
the title stand out.
Moodboard-create at least one for the ideas that have inspired you.

Audience research (UK Tribes)-which tribe would buy your magazine? They are the tribe/ target
audience you are aiming your magazine at.
The tribe that would buy my magazine would be the sport tribe. This is because my magazines are based
around England and in the magazine it would be discussing Englands chances in the 2014 world cup.
Therefore my target audience is sport fans as they would be most interested in my magazine.
Use survey monkey to create questionnaire aimed at your audience. Ask at least 5 people to answer it.
What is your gender? 5 people said male.
What sport do you play? 1 football, 1 golf, 1 cricket, 1 rugby and 1 other.
Do you buy sport magazines? 3 people said rarely. 1 perosn said no and 1 person said yes.
Do you think a football magazine on the World Cup 2014 would be a good seller? 5 people said yes.
Would you buy the magazine? 4 people said yes and 1 person said no.
From these results I can see that most people do buy sport magazines, and that people would
definitely be interested in a world cup magazines. Therefore I should pursue in the idea of produing
a world cup magazine.

Analyse the media institution that will publish your magazine.
FIFA would publish this magazine as they are a big company within football, and this would be good for the
magazine because if FIFA would publish it then the public will now this magazine is full of true facts and
statistics about the world cup instead of something that isnt true.
How effective was your research into similar magazines and relevant target audiences. What did you learn
from your research into these two areas? In what ways did this shape the creation of your magazine? Looking
at other sport/England magazines really helped me develop my final idea. This is because it allowed me to look
at magazines colour pallet selection helping me realise what would be the best for my magazine. It let me look
at the positioning of texts and images so that my magazine would be the most appealing to the target
audience. And it let my explore what kind of images should be used in my magazine. Therefore the research
section of my work was vital to make a good magazine.
How closely does your magazine follow the forms and conventions of existing magazines? Gives examples of
real magazines you reference. My magazine follows the convention of the magazine FourFourTwo, using the
colours red and white to follow the kit colour of Englands football team. And then using yellow to represent
Brazil as they are the host nation of the world cup.
How successful is your finished magazine? I feel my magazine is successful as it presents an informative
England magazine for the world cup. It is appealing to the target audience with bright colours and interesting
images. Therefore I would class sit as successful.
