Humans in Space

What are the

conditions for life to
exist on a planet?
1. Presence of Water
Why do we need water?

60% of our body is water.
Water helps deliver vitamins and
nutrients from food to our cells.
Our body uses water to flush toxins.
Water helps to regulate body
temperature (sweating).

Water also regulates the
Earths climate.

Oceans absorb heat in the
summer.
Oceans release heat in the
winter.

Water is important because
it exists as a vapor.

Water can be stored in
the atmosphere in clouds
and delivered as rain.

2. Composition of the
Atmosphere
Oxygen is required for most creatures
to survive.
Where does our oxygen come from?
Plants release oxygen into the air
during photosynthesis.
How does the atmosphere
stay on Earth?
The pull of gravity holds the
atmosphere to the Earth so it
doesnt escape into space.
The atmosphere is necessary to
keep us warm.
The atmosphere holds in the heat and
keeps it from radiating out into space.
This is called the greenhouse effect.
The moon has no atmosphere, so the
daytime temp can get really high and
the nighttime temp extremely cold.
The atmosphere has to be thick
enough.
Earths atmosphere is thick enough
to protect the planet.
The ozone layer protects us from
ultraviolet radiation given off by
the sun.
Our atmosphere doesnt have high
levels of poisonous gases.
What are the components of
Earths atmosphere?
Oxygen
Carbon Dioxide
Nitrogen
Argon
Other gases

3. Distance from the Sun
Earth is the right distance from the sun to
have the perfect amount of heat and light.
Water is maintained in a liquid state
because the temperature is not too hot or
too cold.
Planets close to the sun are too hot and
planets far from the sun are too cold.
How is space travel possible?
1. Astronauts have to wear spacesuits.
Astronauts must wear spacesuits whenever they leave a
spacecraft and are exposed to the environment of space.
In space, there is no air to breath and no air pressure. Space is
extremely cold and filled with dangerous radiation.
Without protection, an astronaut would quickly die in space.
Spacesuits are specially designed to protect astronauts from
the cold, radiation and low pressure in space.
They also provide air to breathe.
Wearing a spacesuit allows an astronaut to survive and work
in space.
How is space travel possible?
2. Astronauts eat special food
In a low-gravity environment, food and drinks would
simply float away if they weren't handled correctly.
To combat this problem, food is carefully contained
and drinks are packaged as dehydrated powders.
The astronauts add water to beverages through a
special tube before drinking.
Foods are either partially or completely dehydrated
to prevent them from spoiling.

3. The space craft have heat
shields.
Heat shields keep the space
craft from burning up when it
enters the atmosphere.
