1 Introduction

FIRMWARE update of the LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers (hereafter called units) to version 1.4.1.23 or higher must
be done using new LA FIRMWARE UPDATER Software (in place of LA NETWORK MANAGER 1.2.0.102).

LA FIRMWARE UPDATER provides the following functionalities:
FIRMWARE installation (and PRESET LIBRARY if included).
Enhanced reliability for data transfer and installation.
Ergonomic interface.

Note: To ONLY install a PRESET LIBRARY, download the LA4 or LA8 PRESET LIBRARY Pack [2.2] and apply the
instructions given in the LA4-8 PRESET LIBRARIES UPDATE Technical bulletin included in the pack.

2 General instructions

2.1 Symbol description

The following symbols are employed all along this bulletin:

The IMPORTANT symbol notifies an important recommendation of use.

The ARROW symbol notifies a single instruction to apply (a sequence of several instructions will be
notified by numbers).

2.3 General warnings

The procedure described in this bulletin includes LA NETWORK MANAGER re-installation in addition
to FIRMWARE update. These operations will erase all user data, in particular the user presets stored in
the units.
Consequently, before applying any operation described in this bulletin, save personal systems, presets,
and/or output channels to files using the version of LA NETWORK MANAGER Software already
installed on the computer.
These files will be ready to be loaded back after the process is complete. Refer to the LA NETWORK
MANAGER User manual [2.2] for both steps.

While units fitted with FIRMWARE V1.3.0.32 (or lower version) are connected to the L-NET Network,
NEVER launch more than one software application at the same time (LA FIRMWARE UPDATER or LA
NETWORK MANAGER without LA AES3 MONITOR).

Download all required files [3.1, 3.2] before switching the computers network from Internet to
L-NET [3.3, step 2].

Set the computers and units IP addresses first [3.3, steps 2 and 3] and then launch LA FIRMWARE
UPDATER.

Do NOT update more than 10 units at the same time.

Strictly follow the step sequence in each procedure.

3 Installation

3.1 FIRMWARE Packs download

Download the LA4 and/or LA8 FIRMWARE Packs [2.2].

3.2 LA NETWORK MANAGER Software pack installation

LA FIRMWARE UPDATER Software is part of the LA NETWORK MANAGER Software pack [2.2]. If it has already
been installed on the computer, directly go to [3.3]. Otherwise, apply the following procedure:

1. Download the LA NETWORK MANAGER Software pack [2.2].
2. Unzip and run the LA_Network_Manager_With_Addons.exe application.
3. Follow the instructions given in the installation wizard (Figure 1a). The application will install LA NETWORK
MANAGER, LA AES3 MONITOR, and LA FIRMWARE UPDATER as well as launch and uninstall icons in the
Start/Programs/LA Network Manager menu (Figure 1b).

The installation process also includes the Python V2.6 dynamic-link library (dll) as it is used by the
programs.
Do NOT modify the setup options, use the default options.

Note: The LA NETWORK MANAGER Software pack removal procedure consists in clicking on the
uninstallNetworkManagerPlusAddons icon and following the instructions given in the uninstall wizard.

Removing the Pack will NOT remove Python.
If necessary, Python can be removed by clicking on the Programs/Python/Uninstall Python icon.

3.3 L-NET Network setup

1. Connect the computer and the units in a daisy-chain, star, or hybrid topology as described in the LA NETWORK
MANAGER User manual [2.2].

Only use CAT5e U/FTP cables (or higher category) with a maximum length of 100 m / 328 ft.
Do NOT use WIFI networks.
Do NOT connect more than 253 units in the same network.

2. Activate the L-NET network on the computer by setting the TCP/IP address as follows (or refer to the LA
NETWORK MANAGER User manual [2.2]):
a. In the Start menu, select Settings/Network Connections.
b. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
c. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
d. In the Internet Protocol properties (TCP/IP) window, select Use the following IP address and type in the
IP address and the subnet mask.

The computers IP address must be set to 192.168.1.254 and the subnet mask to
255.255.255.0.

e. Click on the OK key and close all remaining windows.

3. Set each units IP address as follows (or refer to the LA4 or LA8 User manual [2.2]):
a. On the units front panel, press and release the encoder wheel.
b. Rotate the encoder wheel clockwise to select the OPTIONS menu.
c. Press the OK key or the encoder wheel to enter the OPTIONS menu.
d. Select the NETWORK ADDRESS control page by pressing the OK key or the encoder wheel.
e. Set the last 3 digits of the desired IP address by rotating the encoder wheel.

The unit IP address format must be 192.168.1. with last 3 digits selected in range 1-253.
The IP addresses of the computer (192.168.1.254) and all units must be different from each other.

f. Press the OK key to validate the setting.

4 FIRMWARE update procedure

4.1 Main procedure

1. Launch LA FIRMWARE UPDATER software by clicking on the LA Firmware Updater icon (Figure 1b).

2. In the warning window, click on the OK key (Figure 3d). The LA FIRMWARE UPDATER user interface is displayed
on top part of the computer screen. It comprises:
An operating window (Figure 3a) showing all units connected to the L-NET network.
The Firmware Update Menu (Figure 3b).
A right-clicking menu for each unit (Figure 3c).

The system may take several seconds before being displayed, depending on the number of networked
units.

3. Check the FIRMWARE version of each unit displayed in the operating window [4.2].

4. Select the units to be updated [4.3]. This step is optional and should be applied if the Update Firmware for All
Selected Units function is intended to be used in the next step.

5. Update FIRMWARE for the selected units [4.4].

The update process will ONLY work with a set of units of same type (LA4 only or LA8 only).

4.2 FIRMWARE version check

Each unit of the operating window is displayed along with its preset, FIRMWARE version, IP address (last 3
digits), and unit type (LA4 or LA8) as shown in Figure 4a.

Notes: All units are sorted by IP addresses.
The shadowed background (Figure 4b) indicates that the unit is disconnected from the L-NET Network.

The display will not be refreshed automatically if a unit that was disconnected recovers connection.
Click on the Rescan System function (Figure 3b) to obtain correct operating window display.
After having clicked on the Rescan System function, it may take several seconds for the system to be
displayed, depending on the number of networked units.

4.3 Unit selection

Unit selection should be applied if the Update firmware for All Selected Units function is intended to be used.
Select the desired units in the operating window by applying left-clicking operations or using the Unit selection
functions of the Firmware Update Menu (Figure 3b).

Left-click on each unit to toggle selection on and off. A cross (X) is displayed when a unit has been selected (as for
units 148 to 151 in Figure 5).

4.4 FIRMWARE update

1. Select one of the following FIRMWARE update processes:
For a single unit = right-click on the desired unit and click on the Update Firmware for this Unit function.
For all LA4 units = click on the Update Firmware for All LA4 units function.
For all LA8 units = click on the Update Firmware for All LA8 units function.
For all selected units [4.3] = click on the Update Firmware for All Selected Units function.

2. The Firmware update window is displayed with the step 1 menu. Click on the red key, browse to select the run
file of the FIRMWARE Folder included in the LA4 or LA8 FIRMWARE Pack [3.1], and validate.

3. The Firmware update window is displayed with the step 2 menu (Figure 7a) or an error message (Figure 7b)
whether the update process is allowed or denied, respectively. In the latter case the user should refer to the
Troubleshooting section [5].

4. Click on the Update Firmware key to launch the update process for the selected units (Figure 8a). Wait until the
process is complete and validate in the confirmation window (Figure 8b).
Notes: While processing the units LCD screens flash the FW update operation message (Figure 8c).
If the process has failed for a unit, the confirmation window will display the message of Figure 8d and the user
must re-launch the FIRMWARE update process for this unit.

After having clicked on the Update Firmware key the process may take several seconds before
launch, depending on the number of selected units.

The Firmware update window is displayed with the step 3 menu (Figure 9a). The Please restart all updated
unit(s) message prompts the user to manually restart each updated unit (so as to complete firmware installation).
The Please Restart Unit message is also displayed on each units LCD screen (Figure 9b).

5. Close the Firmware update window. Restart each updated unit by switching it off and on using the On/Off switch
on the units front panel (refer to the LA4 or LA8 User manual [2.2]).

The updated units must be restarted before use. Wait for 30 seconds for the units turn-off
sequence to be completed before switching it on again.
When the unit is switched on for the first time after the update, it takes about 4 minutes for new
FIRMWARE to be installed. The FIRMWARE installation sequence comes with the LCD screen
messages shown in the following paragraph.
In the eventuality of unexpected behavior, refer to the Troubleshooting section [5.4].

FIRMWARE installation sequence

Empty screen (40-50 seconds): the Firmware files are being opened.

DISPLAY programming sequence all green LED lit.
Note: The message will turn to Programming DISPLAY Please Wait if the
version of prior installed FIRMWARE is 1.4 or higher.

DSP programming sequence with all green and red LED lit.

End of DSP programming sequence.
If the unit is not fitted with LA-AES3 board (refer to the LA-AES3 User manual
[2.2]), the update process is complete and the operating state will be available as soon
as the main screen is displayed.

(ONLY for units fitted with LA-AES3 board and having FIRMWARE V1.4
installed for the first time)
FPGA (digital audio) programming sequence with all green and red LED lit.

(ONLY for units fitted with LA-AES3 board and having FIRMWARE V1.4
installed for the first time)
The units fitted with LA-AES3 board and having FIRMWARE 1.4 installed for the first
time must be restarted two times. The second restart is prompted by the Please
Restart Unit message displayed on the LCD screen.

6. After the updated units are restarted, click on the Rescan System function (Figure 3b) to refresh the operating
window display and check the final FIRMWARE versions of all units.

After having clicked on the Rescan System function, it may take several seconds for the system to be
displayed, depending on the number of networked units.

If an error has been detected while updating FIRMWARE for a unit, the background color of this unit will
turn red and the ERROR message will be displayed (see Figure 10).
In this case, do NOT operate the unit and refer to [5.4] for troubleshooting instructions.

7. (ONLY for units fitted with LA-AES3 board) Check that the AES/EBU input mode is selectable in the
INPUT MODE page of the OPTIONS menu of each updated unit. Otherwise, refer to section [5.5].

5.1 Introduction

The following flowcharts provide assistance to the user for eventual troubleshooting operations. Each flowchart
corresponds to a symptom. The keys for interpretation of the flowchart are the following:

1 Introduction

La mise jour du FIRMWARE des contrleurs amplifis LA4 et LA8 (appels units par la suite) la version 1.4.1.23 ou
postrieure doit tre effectue en utilisant le logiciel LA FIRMWARE UPDATER (et non plus le logiciel LA
NETWORK MANAGER 1.2.0.102).

LA FIRMWARE UPDATER fournit les fonctionnalits suivantes :
Installation du FIRMWARE (et de la LIBRAIRIE DE PRESETS, si incluse).
Scurit renforce lors du transfert de donnes et linstallation.
Interface ergonomique.

Note : Pour installer la LIBRAIRIE DE PRESETS uniquement, tlcharger le Pack LIBRAIRIE DE PRESETS LA4 ou
LA8 [2.2] et appliquer les instructions du Bulletin technique MISE A JOUR LIBRAIRIES DE PRESETS LA4-8

2.3 Consignes de scurit gnrales

La procdure dcrite dans ce bulletin inclut la rinstallation de LA NETWORK MANAGER en plus de la
mise jour du FIRMWARE. Ces oprations vont effacer toutes les donnes personnelles, en particulier
les presets utilisateur stocks dans les units.
Par consquent, avant dappliquer une procdure de ce bulletin, sauvegarder les systmes, presets,
et/ou les canaux de sortie dans des fichiers en utilisant le logiciel LA NETWORK MANAGER dj
install dans lordinateur.
Ces fichiers pourront tre rechargs aprs la fin de la procdure. Consulter le Manuel dutilisation LA
NETWORK MANAGER [2.2] pour la sauvegarde et la rcupration des fichiers.

Tant que des units contenant le FIRMWARE 1.3.0.32 (ou version infrieure) sont connectes au
Rseau L-NET, ne JAMAIS lancer plus dun logiciel la fois (LA FIRMWARE UPDATER ou LA
NETWORK MANAGER sans LA AES3 MONITOR).

Tlcharger tous les fichiers ncessaires [3.1, 3.2] avant de basculer le rseau de lordinateur dInternet
L-NET [3.3, tape 2].

Rgler les adresses IP de lordinateur et des units [3.3, tapes 2 et 3] avant de lancer LA FIRMWARE
UPDATER.

Ne pas mettre jour plus de 10 units simultanment.

Respecter strictement lordre des tapes successives dans chaque procdure.

3 Installation

3.1 Tlchargement des Packs FIRMWARE

Tlcharger les Packs FIRMWARE LA4 et/ou LA8 [2.2].

3.2 Installation du Pack logiciel LA NETWORK MANAGER

Le logiciel LA FIRMWARE UPDATER est intgr dans le Pack logiciel LA NETWORK MANAGER [2.2]. Si ce
dernier a dj t install, aller directement [3.3]. Sinon, appliquer la procdure suivante :

1. Tlcharger le Pack logiciel LA NETWORK MANAGER [2.2].
2. D-zipper et lancer lapplication LA_Network_Manager_With_Addons.exe.
3. Suivre les instructions du didacticiel dinstallation (Figure 1a). Lapplication va installer LA NETWORK MANAGER,
LA AES3 MONITOR, et LA FIRMWARE UPDATER ainsi que des icnes de lancement et de dsinstallation dans le
menu Dmarrer/Programmes/LA Network Manager (Figure 1b).

Le processus dinstallation inclut galement la bibliothque dynamique Python 2.6 (dynamic-link
library = dll) utilise par les programmes.
Ne PAS modifier les options dinstallation ; conserver les options par dfaut.

3.3 Installation du Rseau L-NET

1. Connecter lordinateur et les units dans une topologie cascade, parallle, ou hybride comme dcrit dans le
Manuel dutilisation LA NETWORK MANAGER [2.2].

Utiliser EXCLUSIVEMENT des cbles CAT5e U/FTP (ou de catgorie suprieure) dune longueur
maximale de 100 m / 328 ft.
Ne PAS utiliser de rseau WIFI.
Ne PAS connecter plus de 253 units dans le mme rseau.

2. Activer le rseau L-NET sur lordinateur en rglant ladresse TCP/IP comme suit (ou consulter le Manuel
dutilisation LA NETWORK MANAGER [2.2]):
a. Dans le menu Dmarrer, slectionner Paramtres/Connexions Rseau.
b. Cliquer-droit sur Connexion au rseau local et slectionner Proprits.
c. Dans la fentre Proprits de connexion au rseau local, double-cliquer sur Protocole Internet (TCP/IP).
d. Dans la fentre Proprits de Protocole Internet (TCP/IP), slectionner Utiliser ladresse IP suivante et
saisir lAdresse IP et le Masque de sous-rseau.

Ladresse IP de lordinateur doit tre 192.168.1.254 et le Masque de sous-rseau
255.255.255.0.

e. Cliquer sur OK et refermer toutes les fentres.

3. Rgler ladresse IP de chaque unit comme suit (ou consulter le Manuel dutilisation LA4 ou LA8 [2.2]):
a. Sur le panneau avant de lunit, presser puis relcher lencodeur.
b. Tourner lencodeur pour slectionner le menu OPTIONS.
c. Presser la touche OK ou lencodeur pour entrer dans le menu OPTIONS.
d. Slectionner la page NETWORK ADDRESS en pressant la touche OK ou lencodeur.
e. Rgler les 3 derniers chiffres de ladresse IP dsire en tournant lencodeur.

Le format de ladresse IP dune unit doit tre 192.168.1. avec les 3 derniers chiffres
slectionns dans la plage 1-253.
Les adresses IP de lordinateur (192.168.1.254) et des units doivent tre diffrentes les unes des
autres.

f. Presser la touche OK pour valider le rglage.

4 Procdure de mise jour du FIRMWARE

4.1 Procdure principale

1. Lancer le logiciel LA FIRMWARE UPDATER en cliquant sur licne LA Firmware Updater (Figure 1b).

2. Dans la fentre dalerte, cliquer sur OK (Figure 3d). Linterface de LA FIRMWARE UPDATER saffiche en haut de
lcran de lordinateur. Elle comprend:
Une fentre oprative (Figure 3a) ou sont affiches toutes les units connectes au rseau L-NET.
Le menu Firmware Update (Figure 3b).
Un menu clic-droit pour chaque unit (Figure 3c).

Le systme peut mettre plusieurs secondes safficher selon le nombre dunits connectes.

3. Vrifier la version du FIRMWARE de chaque unit affiche dans la fentre oprative [4.2].
4. Slectionner les units mettre jour [4.3]. Cette tape optionnelle doit tre applique si lutilisateur a lintention
dutiliser la fonction Update Firmware for All Selected Units par la suite.
5. Mettre jour le FIRMWARE des units slectionnes [4.4].

Le processus de mise jour ne pourra tre lanc QUE pour un groupe dunits de mme type (LA4
seulement ou LA8 seulement).

4.2 Vrification de la version du FIRMWARE

Chaque unit de la fentre oprative est affiche avec ses preset, version de FIRMWARE, adresse IP (3 derniers
chiffres), et type dunit (LA4 or LA8) comme montr en Figure 4a.

Notes : Les units sont classes par adresse IP.
Un arrire-plan gris (Figure 4b) indique que lunit est dconnecte du rseau L-NET.

Laffichage nest pas actualis automatiquement si une unit dconnecte se reconnecte.
Cliquer sur la fonction Rescan System (Figure 3b) pour obtenir un affichage correct de la fentre
oprative.
Aprs avoir cliqu sur la fonction Rescan System, le systme peut mettre plusieurs secondes
safficher selon le nombre dunits connectes.

4.3 Slection dunits

Lutilisateur doit slectionner des units sil a lintention dutiliser la fonction Update firmware for All Selected
Units. Slectionner les units dsires dans la fentre oprative par des clics-gauche ou par une Fonction de
slection des units du menu Firmware Update (Figure 3b).

Cliquer-gauche sur chaque unit pour valider/annuler la slection. Une croix (X) est affiche lorsquune unit a
t slectionne (cest le cas pour les units 148 151 en Figure 5).

4.4 Mise jour du FIRMWARE

1. Slectionner lun des processus suivants de mise jour du FIRMWARE:
Pour 1 unit = cliquer-droit sur lunit dsire puis cliquer sur la fonction Update Firmware for this Unit.
Pour toutes les units LA4 = cliquer sur la fonction Update Firmware for All LA4 units.
Pour toutes les units LA8 = cliquer sur la fonction Update Firmware for All LA8 units.
Pour toutes les units slectionnes [4.3] = cliquer sur la fonction Update Firmware for All Selected Units.

2. La fentre Firmware update saffiche avec le menu step 1. Cliquer sur la touche rouge, naviguer pour slectionner
le fichier run du Dossier FIRMWARE inclus dans le Pack FIRMWARE LA4 ou LA8 [3.1], et valider.

3. La fentre Firmware update saffiche avec le menu step 2 (Figure 7a) ou un message derreur (Figure 7b) selon
que le processus de mise jour est accept ou refus, respectivement. Dans le dernier cas, lutilisateur devrait
consulter la section Dpannage [5].

4. Cliquer sur la touche Update Firmware pour lancer le processus de mise jour des units slectionnes (Figure
8a). Attendre la fin du processus et valider dans la fentre de confirmation (Figure 8b).
Notes : Durant le processus, les crans LCD des units affichent le message FW update operation (Figure 8c).
Si le processus a chou pour une unit, la fentre de confirmation affiche le message de la Figure 8d et
lutilisateur doit relancer le processus de mise jour du FIRMWARE de cette unit.

Aprs avoir cliqu sur la touche Update Firmware le processus peut mettre plusieurs secondes
dmarrer selon nombre dunits slectionnes.

La fentre Firmware update saffiche avec le menu step 3 (Figure 9a). Le message Please restart all updated
unit(s) demande lutilisateur de redmarrer manuellement chaque unit mise jour (de manire terminer
linstallation du FIRMWARE). Le message Please Restart Unit est galement affich sur lcran LCD de chaque
unit (Figure 9b).

5. Fermer la fentre Firmware update. Redmarrer chaque unit mise jour en lteignant puis la rallumant par
linterrupteur Marche/Arrt situ sur le panneau avant (consulter le Manuel dutilisation LA4 ou LA8 [2.2]).

Les units mises jour doivent tre redmarres avant utilisation. Attendre 30 secondes que la
squence dextinction de lunit soit termine avant de la rallumer.
Lorsque lunit est allume pour la premire fois aprs la mise jour, linstallation du FIRMWARE dure
4 minutes. La squence dinstallation du FIRMWARE est accompagne de message saffichant
sur lcran LCD. Ces messages sont dtaills dans le paragraphe suivant.
En cas danomalie, merci de consulter la section Dpannage [5.4].

Si lunit nest pas quipe de la carte LA-AES3 (consulter le Manuel dutilisation
LA-AES3 [2.2]), le processus de mise jour est termin et lunit est oprationnelle
ds que lcran principal saffiche.

(UNIQUEMENT pour les units quipes de la carte LA-AES3 et ayant la
version de FIRMWARE 1.4 installe pour la premire fois)
Squence de programmation du FPGA (son numrique) avec toutes les LED vertes et
rouges allumes.

version de FIRMWARE 1.4 installe pour la premire fois)
Les units quipes de la carte LA-AES3 et ayant un FIRMWARE 1.4 install pour la
premire fois doivent tre redmarres deux fois. Le second redmarrage est
demand par le message Please Restart Unit affich sur lcran LCD.

6. Aprs que les units mises jour aient redmarr, cliquer sur la fonction Rescan System (Figure 3b) pour
actualiser laffichage de la fentre oprative et vrifier la version finale du FIRMWARE de chaque unit.

Aprs avoir cliqu sur la fonction Rescan System, le systme peut mettre plusieurs secondes
safficher selon nombre dunits connectes.

Si une erreur a t dtecte lors de la mise jour du FIRMWARE dune unit, celle-ci sera affiche
avec un arrire-plan rouge accompagn du message ERROR (voir Figure 10).
Dans ce cas, ne PAS utiliser lunit et consulter la section de dpannage [5.4].

7. (UNIQUEMENT pour les units quipes de la carte LA-AES3) Vrifier que le mode dentre AES/EBU
est slectionnable dans la page INPUT MODE du menu OPTIONS de chaque unit mise jour. Sinon, consulter
la section [5.5].
